The big controversy is that Greta Gerwig wasn't nominated for best director.

Because the movie is very much focused on gender and patriarchy and is particularly of interest to (and marketed to) female audiences.

Including nominations for both Gerwig and Robbie! Just not in the specific categories people wanted, lol.

Don't get me wrong, I was surprised Gerwig wasn't in the Best Director list... but I think everyone's outrage like the movie was completely shunned has been pretty wild. Usually when people are mad at snubs, it's because something was completely left out or left out of the Best Picture race. But Barbie's the fourth most nominated movie of the year! It's a mortal lock to win multiple Oscars! The Academy clearly likes it very, very much! It's probably one of the most nominated comedies in Oscar history, if I had to guess.

And we've got Hillary Clinton out here tweeting how it might sting for Greta and Margot to "not take home the gold"-- even though they both could absolutely win an Academy Award this year, lol. It's just a crazy, crazy year for The Discourse in general, and two omissions from the nomination list just poured gasoline onto the Discourse Fire.

Which is a shame, because I think this is an exceptionally strong year in terms of overall nominees. I think, like, 7 of the 10 Best Picture nominees were really good, and I think none of them are bad. That just never happens. And we might have a Best Actor winner for a performance that's actually good this year! Which also rarely happens! (If it's Giamatti, I'll be over the moon.) We could get, like, Oppenheimer/Nolan/Giamatti/Gladstone/Downey Jr/Randolph/Gerwig/Hemingson. That'd be *such* a good list of winners.

Maybe I'm just more used to the pain of Oscar snubs because shit I love gets snubbed every single year without fail. I was heated about the lack of Charles Melton from MAY DECEMBER and the lack of SUZUME on the Best Animated Feature list. It's always something. The eternal frustration that the Oscars inevitably brings, lol.

>Randolph

God she was terrific. I was so bummed out when they canceled that kind of fun TV reboot of High Fidelity because I read somewhere her character was supposed to be the focus of the second season and that seemed so deeply and well-earned. Having her show up in short bursts and make Only Murders even better was a nice consolation prize, but I wasn't ready for how good she was in The Holdovers. It's a nice, small little movie so I don't need to get invested in seeing it get awards but I'd be *thrilled* if she won one.

There’s a chance maybe Ferrara can ride the Barbie wave to a major upset, but I think it’s Randolph’s to lose. And yeah, I’d be thrilled too. The Holdovers was probably my favorite movie of all the ones nominated (though a couple others are neck and neck— like I said, really good year), and Randolph was great in it. It’s so easy for that part to fall into something one-note— but both the movie and performer are too smart for that.

I was very disappointed Penelope Cruz didn’t make it into the field for Ferrari. A real old school powerhouse performance. She could’ve contended in an alternate universe. But I’m still hoping Holdovers takes Actor, Supporting Actress, and Screenplay. All would be my picks in their respective fields.

True of the whole movie, I think. The lazy route could have made a really fun, solid little comedy about a kid and a grouchy teacher and a lunch lady stuck at a boarding school over Christmas break. And it probably wouldn't have even been bad. But nobody was content with that, particularly not her. Wonderful, funny, sad film. And it was deeply affirmative about the vocation of teaching and the potential of youth? Be still my heart.

I appreciate the good news about the other awards. Fingers crossed.

I skipped it because that's what I saw in the trailer.

>I skipped it because that's what I saw in the trailer.

Making a trailer for a movie like this seems tough. The film itself is pretty conventional and the thing that I described is both pretty popular and (as you note) still not always compelling as a "must watch". So I assume if you are putting together an ad for it, you lean hard on the parts that point toward "pretty popular."

There's no big twist or editorial decision that makes it *not* a sweet coming of age story about a lonely boy accompanied by a grouchy teacher and a grieving (though that part is definitely buried by the trailers) lunch lady. But it's just relentlessly thoughtful and careful and never goes for "easy" when one of the above two options is available.

So I can't say that you judged it wrongly from the trailers, but rather that it's better than the best possible version of that movie. If that makes sense?

And I am not sure how much that had to do with the misdirection in the marketing. This isn't much like Bamboozle at all. The satirical comedy aspects of it are a much smaller part of the movie than the commercials suggested.

It's mostly a family drama about an isolated frustrated writer. I guess it's a win because white filmmakers have been making that sort of film for years and racking up awards but I don't love those movies either.

I promised my wife I will watch it again at some point (she liked it) with the mindset of knowing it's not a comedy.

maybe that helped cuz i thoroughly enjoyed it

Sterling K. Brown is just such a fun actor to watch...and i appreciated the small quiet things...like the care that was shown for the home aide as she rekindled her romance and got married...

maybe watch it again from the mindset of...just enjoy it
