"Celebrities with complicated friendships"

We often talk about celebs who feud with each other, but what are some stories and examples of those who just seem to have complicated friendships, relationships, and even friendly rivalries?

First one I think about is Steve Harvey and Cedric The Entertainer. They appeared to be best friends in the 90's when Steve had the show, and they both did Kings of Comedy and were always rolling together. Then, I started hearing about different incidents, mainly due to Steve's arrogance and diva type attitude. I've heard they clashed a lot, and I'm not sure if this was before or after the incident where Steve tried to steal Bernie's role behind his back. A lot of folks felt Ced was giving him an invisible side eye during the Def Comedy Jam when Steve talked about Bernie.

I for sure think about Brandy and Monica. I'm not sure exactly when and where their rivalry started, but it had to be somewhere around 95-96 when they first debuted. A L.A. "urban legend" claims that Monica was on 92.3 The Beat one morning, and when someone asked her about Brandy, she said "oh, you mean Mo to the, Ho to the."

"The boy is mine" brought them together of course, but I've seen them in interviews together where you can still see that there is tension, even if they claim to be friends. I also caught Brandy's performance at some award show last year where she threw shots at Monica, so who knows where they currently stand. It seems like they're on bad terms again though.

I know that Snoop has had a few relationships like this. The first was with Dre, after Dre left Death Row. They never blatantly dissed each other, but a lot of folks (somewhat accurately) predicted that Doggfather would fail because Dre wasn't involved. On the song "Freestyle conversation," the skit starts off saying "I heard Snoop Dogg ain't shit without a beat," and Snoop says "I don't give a fuck about a beat!" which was a straight sub shot. Even "Been there, done that" could be seen as a diss to most Gangsta Rappers, including Snoop/DPG.

They got cool again in 99 once Snoop was on Death Row, and they did The Wash in 2001...and then, Dre dissed Jermaine Dupri, who was Snoop's homie. Snoop took offense to Dre and Xzibit dissing him, while knowing they didn't have the balls to diss Suge Knight, who's the one who deserved it way more than anything JD did. They made up pretty fast, but Snoop did throw shots at Xzibit on "Pimp Slapp'd" (I'm not Xzibit, you can't pull my hoe card!) He also had quick feuds with Daz and Kurupt around 99 and 2003.

Drake and Kendrick are another prime example...Drake had Kendrick on the "Take care" skit, and I think they might have even toured together. All seemed to be great, and then Kendrick mentioned him on "Control" and all hell broke loose on Drake's part. I don't think they really became cool again until 1-2 years ago...I figure the line on "For free" and even the whole song concept was a nod to Kendrick.

I know there's a few of these within the world of Sports. Kobe and Shaq are a prime example...from Kobe being the little bro, to becoming better than Shaq and having that huge ego clash that lead to Shaq being traded...to them halfway making up when they first played (remember Kobe got inbetween Shaq and Bynum after Bynum dunked on Shaq?)...and then, whenever Shaq made that "Kobe how my ass taste?" diss. They had a long podcast last year, and it seems like they're BFFs again. Kobe spoke at his statue unveiling, and I'm sure Shaq will speak at Kobe's retirement this month.

What are some examples that y'all have knowledge about?

wasn't in the same crew/clique had some weird type relationships. And even half of those within the same crews ended up feuding at some point. I don't know what it is in the water out there

with someone as equals. You see this all the time with people at the top of their game but that shit is true at every level (I've lost some good friendships over it).

I think what inevitably happens with a winning partnership is at some point you start wondering who is bringning more to the table and whether you can do it without the other person.

It's the breakup story of every music group.

What's super interesting to me is when folks try to leave the partnership and then they realize that they may have been wrong and return and try to reclaim that old magic.

I feel that's what happened with Snoop because dude was definitely bugging when he was trying to say he didn't need beats.

I think Shaq learned some appreciation for Kobe after dude went on to do it without him.

Shit I think it must have been hard for Andy Richter to accept that his best work was as Conan's sidekick. I also think when Conan was down he turned to Andy Richter to get that old magic back.

I also think it's interesting when people at the top of their game have mutual respect for their rivals, even enough to come together to do a project or two together, but then know better than try to do anything more sustained than that.

Nas & Jay will show up on each other albums, but ain't no one thinking they should do an album together.

Funny to see Jay and Diddy all buddy buddy now though they rarely appear on each others projects.

And not exactly on the topic but I think Drake should have spoken up for Meek Mills with the probation violation, that would have been a classy move.

Oh this always happens. And even in situations like Jeezy and T.I....I see they're making an album together, and someone said "this woulda been great...in 2006." But it's like, it's no way that they both woulda spent the energy and effort to work together at that time. In 2017, it's much more needed for both of them, even if they know it's not gonna appeal to anybody under 30.

>I feel that's what happened with Snoop because dude was
>definitely bugging when he was trying to say he didn't need
>beats.

I mean...he didn't specifically need Dre, because he made better music with Pharrell last decade...but yea, he def needed better beats than what he got on Doggfather and even Paid da cost, for sure.

>I think Shaq learned some appreciation for Kobe after dude
>went on to do it without him.

Yep, and they both just matured. Crazy to think they were both in their 20's when they won those rings.

>I also think it's interesting when people at the top of their
>game have mutual respect for their rivals, even enough to come
>together to do a project or two together, but then know better

Yep, this is basically the Jeezy and T.I. thing happening now. Not rivals but just weren't in the same squad.

>Nas & Jay will show up on each other albums, but ain't no one

I never understood where Jay and Diddy were with each other. That "I get money" remix with them and 50 was brilliant though...three cash kings of NY.

>And not exactly on the topic but I think Drake should have
>spoken up for Meek Mills with the probation violation, that

I actually think he did speak on it at a concert

There are other factors, but that alone can drive a wedge through any friendship. Kanye thought their kids were going to be playing together and such.

while Big Boi says nice things I have to think a part of him is like "this fucking only child ass nigga"

Mos & Kweli - back in the day they were late for a gig at UVA opening for Outkast. After the show was over we heard dudes yelling backstage. The way the arena is built at UVA the hallways were curved. When we finally got to them we see Mos and Kweli looking at us like "what? we was just talking" My boy asked Mos when was the last time they practced and Mos was like "we haven't seen each other in over a month. This was during the Black Star album when they were bubbling. Mos was doing other projects and their live show was kinda ass.

Will.i.am. and Fergie. Ever wonder why Fergie never came out with another album after going 4X plat? Big Willie is a hater. He won't release her from his contract, won't release her album and due to this its been a struggle to record a new BEP album cause she knows she makes that shit go. So does Will but his ego is too big to let her blow all the way up. She HATES him.

Will.i.am. and the last Black chick that was in the group. She was suing him while on stage performing with him. We couldn't believe but that was our first view of the "industry. Dude was like "I ain't releasing her from her contract until someone pays me a shit load of money"

Jeru and Premo. Have no idea what the hell its over but they decided to stop working together even though their combo was deadly. Money fucked it up.

Beatnuts.. heard they broke up over a girl. smh...

Hilldawg and Obama? I feel like these folks HATE each other and only fuck with each other because they had too. O needed Hilldawgs donor list and Hilldawg needed O to help with Black votes. I feel like both half assed it.

Wu Tang. I'm listening to GZA's Liquid Swords and remember how they kinda fell out when the money got funny with RZA. Always felt like RZA was the architect but once they got on I think he prolly did some funny biz with the contracts.

My understanding of how WTC formed was that Rae and GFK were from what we'd call opposite 'sets' in Cali. They've come back together split apart quite a bit over the course of time but I always wonder if there's something bubbling under the surface.

I like Rae, but I like him better with Ghost and I'm sure I aint the only one who'se ever said that. I've always wondered if his solo endeavors have been a subliminal means of him tryna prove he don't need ghost.

Ghost sued RZA over back royalties and won. Ghost talked hella trash about RZA as a musician and a businessman to anyone who'd listen about 10 years in the lead-up for the release of his solo album and the Wu-Tang 8 Diagrams album. RZA definitely returned shots. Both of them since said that they have love for each other on the family level but just can't do business together anymore.

Similar situation with U-God, but there's always been an undercurrent that U-God is doing it for publicity.

but i just happened to be listening to the radio when Malcolm X got played for the very first time and my jaw dropped. it was like a line got drawn right down the middle of Detroit

it didn't even really matter to me that the BME album didnt quite live up to the potential of the '98-'99-2000 stuff. i will always adore that project for what it represents.

Man....

Friendships in this game are hard... you dont really know how someone is gonna act till they start poppin..

And on the flip side... you constantly cant be in your feelings when communication aint what it was.

But also... lotta these people are coworkers and not friends... and you may have some coworkers you cool with but not ones you wanna be lost in the woods with

Him and Quincy Jones wasn't just father and son or was it older Brother younger Brother? alot of words and sentiments said and they talked nicely in Public still One wonders?

Michael Jackson and Diana Ross everything and more and yet what was it again? very complicated situation.

Michael Jackson and Teddy Riley wasn't what it seemed. MJ dug him and worked with him and yet it felt there was differences.

Him and Jimmy Jam seemed like respect and yet plenty of Shade on Prince's part and yet Jimmy Jam was a Fanboy and Prince left him handing a bit.

Prince and Morris Day they created alot of music together and yet right before the end it was off.

Prince and Andre Cymone truly makes this point because word was that Andre didn't even get into Paisley Park into the 00's.

Prince and Jessie Johnson very complicated and yet respect and yet distance.
