aka west wheaton, aka south rockville aka north bethesda, aka "pike n rose" (groan)

i feel like im in a pocket of the most affordable housing stock in moco

when all those young single people from the early 00s & 10s start getting married & having babies, where they gonna go? arlington? not likely? dc? LOL. pgco...doubtful. they'll look @ moco...& my lil cape cod will be waiting.

i'd love a spread in great falls. so beautiful.

also of course wouldnt mind a townhouse near howard, somewhere in shaw.

I'm up Georgia Ave/Layhill.

They are building up in that area like crazy. New 500K th's in Poplar Run are selling like hotcakes, new th's right across from the Glenmont metro. Plus they are redoing the intersection of Georgia and Randolph. I'm sure Glenmont shopping center is next.

I feel like I bought in a damn good area. And my development is small and the HOA is on point.

Unfortunately, most of my jobs have been in Virginia so that commute was borderline horrible. I do want to get back up there at some point though.

I lived on First Ave. in Downtown Silver Spring from 2007 to November of last year.

Got tired of renting, and bought a home 15mins away. I still hang in the area though.

The neighborhood actually rivals any hood in DC in terms of diversity, food, things to do and amenities. Best Burb in MD if you ask me.

Within a half mile radius is pretty nice.
There's a row of bars a few blocks down and before the fire quarry house had live music too.

It could use a couple more bars and maybe a bowling alley, but there's not much it doesn't have.

Which is actually getting redone.

I read a few local blogs. That mall is getting redone. They are gonna put an Old Navy, a Michael's and Bowling Alley/Bar joint like Lucky Strike in there according to some plans I saw posted.

Plus the veterans plaza concerts, the Silver Spring Jazz Festival is ALWAYS poppin', and the new multimilliondollar library just opened.

Get off Ellsworth and troop five minutes up or down Georgia Ave. Olazzo's, Society, Back Alley Bar, Jackie's, The Firehouse, Urban Butcher....tons of great spots.

Then off East West highway you got Denizen's Brewing, Scion and the coffee house DJ spot Bump N'Grind too. Off First Ave, you got the good Tastee Diner for that all night sober you up diner food and Cubano's- some of the best cuban food in the area.

And then on top of that throw in it's accessiblity to DC by metro and car (you can take 13th, Georgia Ave, 16th or Connecticut into the city and be downtown in 20 mins in regular traffic) and the Capital Crescent Bike trail that'll run you to the G'town waterfront and the Metropolitan Branch Trail that you can bike/jog/walk right down to Union Station.

You gotta explore. DTSS is indeed pretty damn tight.

they're nice too. there are people living in em and everything. still waiting on the redevelopment of the area a little more. i thought it was going to be on a popping when they were gonna build a Sala Thai in the building. but they're stalling on that. but let that trolley/street car line move up that way. to me...it'll be the next big revitalization area. white people love detached houses with yards.

Near Layhill. I wanted to stay in Downtown Silver Spring, but I also wanted to own a home. Ruled out a condo. But townhomes in DTSS go for $600K MINIMUM.

I didn't have that kind of loot so I trooped it up Georgia Ave about 15mins away. Love my new place, but I still hang out in DTSS if I don't feel like going to DC.

I live on Georgia Ave right at New Hampshire, there's not a ton to do nighlighfe wise (dancing, etc) but some good food spots (Ana's, fish in the hood, etc) & looking glass/dc reynolds/a few other bars opening up recently.

The camping was nice but the horses are boring as shit. They're basically small cows or ducks. They just graze and the idea of running, playing horses is gone within minutes. But the beach is super nice and empty.

There's a black outdoors meetup group you should follow, I'll shoot you the link if you're interested.

No thanks.

I'm not trying to be snarky by my responses but
I see some of you are trying to take it there.

My current universe is D.C. (all of its quadrants) and has been for the past five years.

I'm rarely if ever in the areas everyone in here is discussing.
If this is a DC metro area post, then say that.

Shit, I get annoyed when they refer to Newbirth being in Atlanta when its more than 30 miles away from there.

Again, I'd encourage you all to explore every part of D.C. and make residence there, not just NW where all the houses are over half a million dollars.

I've been in the future state of New Columbia for five years consecutively.

I've been living in the DC metro area for seven years though.
I'm definitely not from DC and not trying to pose as a Washingtonian.

But...

How much of DC do you actually see and engage if you aren't currently living there?

Honestly the DC metro area frustrates me, but I will be an owner* by the end of the year.

Edit:
*In DC.

Like I've BEEN saying in this post, more of you need to be within the city limits, not in a nearby neighborhood.

I mean, is it attitudes like this that have resulted in the city losing its Chocolate? When I moved here I thought I would be living among Black professionals. I'm generally annoyed with the folks who claim DC and don't live here and as a result don't vote here. You can live in and out of the city all you want but you don't have the same level of socio-political engagement with the direction this city is going in.

Talking big shit about things that they know nothing about. Claiming places like they are from there, talking shit about neighborhoods that they've never been to, etc.

Folks at my job are like that. I'll mention a NEIGHBORHOOD, and they'll be like "where's that?" Like these folks have mad opinions, but have never been outside of Downtown and whatever trendy neighborhood they live in.

i can't tell. you telling me to spend time in a place where mostly all of my memories were formed.

i've spent my childhood commuting in and out of shaw, on 8th & Q. i went to a k-12 school there.
afterwards, i went to howard.
i moved to a condo in takoma park (dc side) for three years.
now i own in landover.
for a couple of years in between, i worked in bethesda.
now i work in foggy bottom.

i go to the parts of the city that dont annoy me with all the yuppies and white people. i engage in quite a bit of the city, but not necessarily the newest hottest swankiest spots. nah. i have roots here. i have lifelong friends here.

i find no frustration here. it's my home. and i own!

i do plan to rent this bad-boy out eventually, maybe then i can earn all of your respect.

Meat pretty much broke it down, but even with that Idk if the "chocolate city" you are thinking of (I'm assuming here) is the one you would've gotten had you moved there when the city was still Black as hell. Black professionals been moving out to the county for 30+ yrs now...(and to be honest I'm using that word loosely because the majority of people here work for the govt...so youre moreso talking about people with maybe a gs-9/10 or higher lol)

More people would love to live within the city limits, but they don't want us there and those of us that can afford it would prefer some representation in addition to other things. When they could afford to live there they didn't want to because of the crime. Now that it's nice they don't want to because well why would they?

The large migration of Black folks that you see happening now started maybe 10-15 yrs ago and involved people that you probably wouldn't consider to be Black professionals...those people moved a long time ago. All these desirable neighborhoods that people speak of now used to be hoods that a lot of people wouldn't step foot in unless they had to or lived there themselves. The city lost its chocolate because of gentrification and folks not paying attention to what was goin on around them. But yeah even with all that said I don't think this post is about voting...

A LOT of Black folks who lived here did not do what was necessary to hold on to a really good thing.

I know and have spoken with a lot of Washingtonians about the history of this city. I have represented Washington residents on a variety of legal issues and I have tried to convince people to keep their property here who are trying to sell it. I'm involved in community meetings and talking to city council. I'm also clearly biased because my involvement with the city is largely from a legal and community perspective.

Ok and great but... those folks effectively abandoned the city. They can't cry and complain about newbies because things are different and you have no involvement or say with what is going on now.

You're absolutely right. It's not just about voting. It's about being an active agent in the place you reside through sustained civic engagement.

The American Dream never existed in this country for black people and working harder only served to make other people richer. Working harder and sucking up on “excuses†only serves to distract from issues where a group of people has been specifically targeted against.

Black people were targeted for subprime loans regardless of if they were qualified for not http://www.citylab.com/housing/2013/08/blacks-really-were-targeted-bogus-loans-during-housing-boom/6559/ (living)

As the world moved to a more internet based approach development of high speed internet in DC has been pretty much nill in some points http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/digital-divide-grows-in-washington-area/2011/02/18/ABSefpH_story.html (access/quality of life)

Meanwhile areas that had been shut out of development for black people (red lining/insurance underwriting) only became more palatable when “other†people started moving into them.
How does a city like DC end up with two Wal-Marts that then turned around and reneged on the promise of living wages?

You bring up these issues like if people tried harder they would’ve been protected which is just non-sense. Unless you have access to board meetings for insurance agencies, or banking agencies, your activism is just a drop in a bucket on a larger scale. Like throwing sand into an ocean to change a tide.

We’re targeted for law enforcement activities, targeted to be victims of fraud by creditors/debtors, targeted to be lived around not near by development, and consistently excluded from the job market amongst other things.

Then we sit around here with this pull up our pants and get by on our bootstraps mentality like we’re going to break down a wall by running into it 1,000 times because we’re “tough and resilient†meanwhile other groups are building ladders on the backs of the very same people that are foolishly “toughing it outâ€.

Terms like “giving up†and “running away†only serve to be distracting and take away real opportunities for people to over come problems, because they make the problems seem like a personal choice and ignore the predatory and organized systems to make even “overcoming†an net loss.

Thanks for your pessimism. I definitely needed to be reminded that as a Black person in the US I have no control over anything no matter how hard I try. Yet, I should stay in the US since there's no place better or as familiar to go.

It's a personal choice to see what is going on and opt out instead of calling attention to it and trying to fight it.

I don't want discourage it. And I genuinely mean that.

In the context of this conversation though I think we see both the problem and solution as two different things.

And I think that fundamental difference isn't being debated.

I disagree with your ideas, but I don't disagree with your ideals.

You're talking about things that have nothing to do with this post and are kinda all over the place. I don't disagree that a lot of Black people messed up a good thing, but that's just how it goes when it comes to this kinda thing.

Not sure what you're even talking about when you say people are complaining about newbies...I don't really see that happening or at least that's not what I'm talking about and if it did that's their choice. If you aren't out here paying folks rent, bills etc then you really don't have but so much of a say in regards to what people should be doing and what folks are allowed to get mad at. I think youre oversimplifying this whole thing...

I don't disagree that people should hold onto their property, but it's not always that simple. My sis n law's family had a house that had been in their family for 2+ generations that they sold. It's easy to say oh they should've kept it (which they should've), but what you don't see from the outside looking in is that her mom had took out idk how many loans on this house (way before the area started to be gentrified) and couldn't afford it anymore (even though the house was paid for by the time she got it). They sold it and it got snatched up and flipped almost immediately.

That's how it goes for a lot of people the other people that just decided to leave don't really care about "newbies" so idk what you even mean by that. To say that folks that wanted a better life for their family have no right to have an opinion on anything isn't fair at all...especially when you weren't even there to experience the DC that they "abandoned".

DC isn't like other cities where people who live in the outskirts only go to the city on the weekends etc. Most folks that live in MD know DC pretty well...hell depending on where you are dc can be literally across the street from you. Most people work in dc, party there and have family that live in the city (if you grew up in the area). While i wouldnt ever claim DC, I would be willing to bet that the majority of the folks i grew up with in MD know DC better than somebody thats only lived there for 7 yrs. I know when I lived there I spent a good amount of time in the city on a weekly if not daily basis.

I've lived on the skirts of the city where I could walk into and out of Maryland.

BUT...

Its like gangs claiming sets and not caring about the fact that they don't have a property interest.

I cut and pasted my response to "Kwezi" to legsdiamond and another person here. I was not trying to derail this post. Damn.

It's silly to me to go back and forth about who really knows DC
and how long you've been in an area when the point remains that if you do not have an address here and/or don't plan to attain one, you don't have a say when things go up for a vote or have the same level of involvement with the politics and changes/improvements to the city.

I think you’re looking at the wrong end of the problem and pointing blame at people who are making better financial decisions to address the problems that you’re speaking of.

Black people on the whole are one of the most reliable spending blocs in the country, and if en masse they’re saying “I’m not going to pay those ridiculous rents†there’s a reason for that.

Speaking about Black people leaving the district for other pastures ignores the transformation that city went through and is going through.

There’s an entire party in the government dedicated to shedding government jobs and increasing contracting jobs.

Black people make up 17.9% of the total government work force but only 13.2% of the US population https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/diversity-and-inclusion/reports/feorp-2012.pdf

Meanwhile the contracting industry has been booming, mostly in defense spending which is tied to white men http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/09/11/army-officer-corps-dominated-by-white-men/14987977/

So less black jobs, money being transferred to private companies, loss of government pensions, more money to 401k plans and Wall Street which directly contributed to the housing crisis http://www.theguardian.com/business/2012/may/20/wall-street-role-financial-crisis

Which disproportionally affected black people http://nlihc.org/article/report-shows-african-americans-lost-half-their-wealth-due-housing-crisis-and-unemployment

Meanwhile a city going through a change in which construction is expanding which bring Latin populations more so than any other demographic http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/09/business/economy/job-growth-for-hispanics-is-outpacing-other-groups.html?_r=0

With artificially inflated housing prices http://www.dezeen.com/2015/06/19/washington-dc-height-buildings-act-skyscrapers-inequality-housing-american-versailles/

People should just ignore all of that and stay in a district that has neither Congressional or Senatorial votes, and not even Senatorial representation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia_voting_rights

For the sake of “Chocolate†authenticity, while being outpaced as a community and individually?

it's a little insulting to hear someone arrive late to the party and ask a why everyone dipped out.

people start families, crunch numbers, look at schools and make decisions based on what is best for them. The city rarely gives back what you put in so I don't blame anyone who moves out to better their situation.

and DC is waaaay different than most cities.

any of that.

Playing victim and deciding to move out instead of fighting.

All great and valid reasons MEAT but your response just gives these folks crying about knowing DC and not being here even less of a platform to stand on.

Why lay claim to a city if you just opted out of it completely by deciding to move and not getting involved?

And I outlined very specific points to support my statements. Your opinion is valid and at the core it's in the right direction, but the concepts and actions to reach goals don't match.

As far as your point about claiming an area. I'd ask you why is Woodley Park more "DC" than Hyattsville?

We're not on here talking about Germantown or Gaithersburg, we're talking about places where if an electric pole goes down it effects that spot. If a rain cloud starts letting out, it's not deciding district lines.

At that level of distance your arguments of culture don't hold up. What effects Capitol Heights, MD effects east DC. What happens on Benning Road effects both localities.

1) Contracting jobs got big.

-So Black folks couldn't see the trend and create their own contracting businesses for gov't where minorities and women get bonus points?

2) Foreclosures and housing market hit Blacks the worst.

-This is true and is true in various urban areas. However, the Black property owners in DC that played it smart with their homes and investments weren't relocated.

3) Latinos and contracting jobs.

See... you link a NYT article that says the Hispanic are rebounding in labor jobs due to increased immigration enforcement. There's nothing there about how all the contracting jobs are going to Latinos and Blacks are being shafted. When I'm passing construction sites in DC and MD there are Blacks and Latinos out there, sometimes all Black crews.

4) Military spending and it being a white man's club.

This is true too.

5) Many of the Black people here don't want to be in the city due to rent/crime/ etc.

So if a newbie comes here and is like, where are all the Black people, and finds out its due to a mix of unfortunate circumstances, bad investments, not being involved and (for too many Black professionals) just not wanting to be here, well...

It sounds like someone that doesn't have being a DC resident as a high priority... And that was the case for most of the PG/MoCo/Nova folks I know and spoke to. I'm not saying they're wrong for that. But why get angry and defensive when I say that as a non-resident you aren't as engaged in the city?

This whole line of arguing started when I said how engaged are you in a city if you don't live there. That's it. What I said is true.

I live here and despite the frustrations I genuinely care about the poor, the vulnerable and the Black people who still live in DC. I'm also doing what I can to help the people who are still in DC stay here.

The suburbs of DC are DEEP with black families that were supported by government and government contracting jobs and some now are being supported by their pensions. They've been there for decades and they're comfortable being there.

I can go into more detail about recent government job losses (mostly accounting tricks) and the impact of the rise of government contracting but it's really besides the point because I don't feel they really deal with the point at hand (why aren't more of us living IN the city?).

Among my black friends, the ones that live in DC are the ones raised in other cities (NY, LA, Chicago, etc). Folks raised around here, even those from DC, generally live in the suburbs.

I think outsiders simply appreciate the city more for what it currently is. People from here remember what it was (good and bad, Chocolate City vs Murder Capital). Those cities are gone, there's a new one now and it's really not all that appealing anymore for those of us raised around here.

Mad excuses about why they can't just say where they really live, as if we all don't have smartphones and google maps. At the end of the day, they go home to their different counties, with different school districts, voting & political structures, municipal services, etc.

Just say DMV or Virginia or Maryland, y'all. Stop trying to be something you aren't.

Assuming that you don't currently live *in* DC. Commuting into the city for ~8 hours to work and going out to a few bars or restaurants is nothing like living there 24/7. You're views on city services and politics are most likely skewed because it's a system that you have no say in (no votes/taxes) and only partially affects you. And that's just from a governmental standpoint. As far as culture on the street, you're far removed from that.

It is what it is.

I'd just like someone to give one good reason for claiming "DC" when they live in Maryland (other than treating people like idiots that don't know that Washington DC is between Virginia and Maryland). Why can't folks just say "Bowie, Maryland?"

Same shitty Pepco people will service it and we'll get power at the same time.
Same shitty pothole people work is being done matter what.
I don't get better/worse metro service when I cross from Takoma Park to Silver Spring

The biggest difference is that I can buy beer in DC gas stations.

Brentwood is Maryland but that shit is DC

People were paying 2500 for a studio at the end of H street
There still weren't many big apartment complexes on top of that and you had to go through all of the Craigslist scams where people were getting over hand and foot
They were also doing a lot of kickbacks, say you go visit a place to try to rent, the person that put up the add wants to inflate the rent while you're there.
Add that on to the people that won't rent to black folks because "statistically it doesn't make sense"
Cap that onto apartment complexes that have income limits and you're forcing a lot of black people to find places outside of the city.

I lived in DC for a little over a year and a half, had the top floor of a shitty rowhouse right next to Howard University. It was a single unit technically but I was in the city. And I enjoyed it. But DC is funky, friend groups don't really mix, people don't really travel to each other's houses either. So where you live is good for you and that's about it. You're not doing much but finding a place you won't get got and trying to reduce your commute time, everything else for normal DC life is almost superfluous (outside of dating, some people are wary to date within neighborhoods they don't deem good).

I like where we're at in Silver Spring, I wouldn't move to DC because there's nothing that offers what we have right now in the city. Most of NW is completely white washed, Anacostia is great but it's a sprawl of houses, NE is a sprawl of houses. H street area is cool to go to but that night life is a bitch. Downtown is overpriced at yuppie. U street is just not a place to actually live. The closest we' get is Logan Circle/Dupont and that area is way too white to enjoy.

There's a better chance for white youth to make it through this transitional period than for black youth. A lot of the folks you hear that have this optimism and willingness to be the pioneers for education reform in DC are white or asian.

I lived in DC for a spell....it was cool back then...but I couldn't see doing it again now... not in lieu of the things have within arms reach where I live now.

and when I move to DMV, it'll probably be the suburbs because I am not fucking with the DCPS and DC is too expensive for me to afford a decent neighborhood and private schools. I know SE is coming up, but it just doesn't offer enough in terms of amenities to make me want to live there.

DC is only recently coming into itself as a real actual city and not just a pseudo wanna-be city.

I don't think you could pay me to live outside the beltway lol....

Like others have stated, there are parts of Virginia & Maryland that are actually closer to the DC hotspots than living inside the DC city limits....

In most big cities the first person who meets the rental qualifications and writes the check gets the apartment. In my experience, DC apartments are more likely to choose from a pool of tenants to make sure they get who they want (read white and Asian).

My sister-in-law lives in a very large 1br in a decent building in Columbia heights she found the apartment in 2013. She pays 1100/mo. She said they took 20 applications for the apt.

i got a whole floor in a big beautiful home with your name(s) on it? it's two bedrooms, a living room and a bathroom...very nice and on the cheap side. (i live on the top floor.)

yeah its deadwood, currently a food desert, not a lot around, but it's changing. I fully own up to being a gentrifier and hoping for more black gentrifiers like myself to join my ranks. i got a deal with my landlord, so i'm not letting this place go unless something drastic happens.

First Hyattsville then Dupont Circle then SW DC 3 blocks from the Waterfront metro station now here.

No I'm not explaining where here is but happy to answer questions about the other 3 locations.

But I'm old and we have two kids, 13 and 9. We still own a place in the city in the Langdon/Woodridge area.

I don't think Bowie grew on me per say, I think I just got older and my life became more centered around my children's activities. I still think it is a great place to raise a family. I like the sense of community out here. I became heavily involved with our kids activities, sports and school. One drawback is Bowie is basically between 3 major cities being DC, Annapolis, and Baltimore. There is not major industry out here so unless you have a job where you are telecommuting or can work from home you will have to commute to one of those places every morning. You can get there under an hour if you leave by say 7:00 otherwise you will spend a good 13 hours a week in the car.

If we didn't have kids, we would have never left the city.

What actually is the purpose of checking someone on say Capitol Heights or Silver Spring or Arlington or Bethesda etc. vs DC? I mean we're talking areas that are serviced by the same bus system, same subway system, same utility companies, etc. Is it just about the feeling it gives you inside or is there a practical concern/application in there somewhere?

The level of engagement argument doesn't really make sense to me. DC swells by 80% every workday and a good portion of the 'false washingtonions' drive DC's economy on a consistent basis by way of shared amenities, services and entertainment. Also, several government agencies are headquartered outside of distric borders, including the DOD/Pentagon. This has not interfered with their government function or relevance in the capital region at large.

There is literally no possible way all of the federal government, municipal government and local commerce, communities and cultures could fit within city limits unless you want population density worse than Manila. And DC is already one of the most expensive cities in the US without such density.

Do you all just envision some Washingtonian utopia where this level of activity sustains, anyone and everyone can reside within distric borders, and it doesn't cost millions per square foot?

And can you explain how your logic makes sense for a city like nyc, where the boroughs are actually classified as seperate counties? Shouldn't you be splitting hairs regarding BK people claiming nyc as well?

For me it started in college when ppl would claim dc to give themselves more credibility when they were the suburbs. I thought that shit was wack. As i've grown older and being an adult living in DC for me it was about the lack of rights we had in government and other issues that are specific to being a dc resident. It's like don't claim us to be cool but have no interest in the things we're dealing with

I don't think this is relevant. I mean there are federal govt agencies all over the country. That has nothing to do with the DC argument

I see. But then, is this why the 'majority' of people claim residing in the DC area? To be cool? Even just in this post, I don't feel like I read any of that. I feel like people were just saying DTSS or what have you and then the border patrol contingent jumped on it implying they were not the audience for this post. I guess I don't understand why it should be 'that' deep.

Well, it does because one of the arguments earlier in the post was that geographical containment/residence within city limits is integral to engaging with the DC community. I don't think this is really true. Even just considering agencies/contractors in the DC area alone, I don't think their location within or outside DC limits interferes with their engagement in the capital region. And I don't think it impedes people/communities who care to engage either. There's a lot more to engagement than just voting, no? If someone wants to get involved in DC issues despite living in Silver Spring, they are somehow precluded from doing so because they "don't know DC?" I don't get it.

I think a lot of people at this point do it for convenience "DC" typically means more to people than if you say "Herndon" and really you're discussing the same proximate area. But when I was younger there was pride associated with it... we had go-go. we had "grit"... folks who moved to the suburbs generally looked down on DC folks (we're talking loonnngggggg before it became the hip spot to live) so I've always been very protective cuz i felt like "back then they didn't want me, now i'm hot they all on me"... you know?

I think it does though. Hell a lot of times it's their elected officials imposing their rules on DC. I just feel like when you lump everyone together you lose the uniqueness of what makes (made) DC the place that I loved. At this point, most of it has been eroded due to gentrification, but to lump the DMV together you quickly lose sight of the mostly black, mostly older residents of DC that seem to have been passed over and forgotten

I lived out in fckin Mitchellville......

It was easier to just tell folks (primarily family, or people that lived outside the area and didn't know the area) that I lived in DC. Because you start saying random cities & counties and get the "--" face from people.....but if you just simplify and say "DC" it just makes the convo roll easier... eventually you get into the details.....

Of course this was when I was younger.....the easier approach would have just been to say "I live in the DC region in a town called _______ "

It's more about dealing with outsiders ignorance of the area than it is about trying to claim something for personal gain or recognition or something like that.

In general people just rep the closest major city to their location. It's really not that deep. Detroit, St Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, etc. etc. etc....

Now though, I rep Arlington hard... I'm quick to differentiate.

Folks getting killed by dirt bike riders, the economy growing around the fact that residents can grow weed now, the issues I'm have with the DC library system, and that whole 51st state thing are things specific to DC.

I wasn't trying to be cool or make anyone feel left out. That's petty and silly. Continuing to feel offended when I conceded people's history with the area is also continuing to be petty and silly.

He didn't say the metro area, DMV and the like. He said DC. Sorry for reading without consulting all of you first.

I read the initial responses and was like... those places aren't DC. Didn't the OP say DC? Once you live and work here, this place becomes a bubble. That's my perspective. I'm truly sorry if my responses make it seem like I'm not respecting those with more holistic DMV perspectives.

Clearly I hurt a lot of feelings. My bad y'all.

We lived here for a month before we knew how nuts things got on Friday and Saturday nights. Before that, we'd just wake up and wonder where all the pizza crusts on the ground came from.

It's pretty okay. Expensive. But I like being able to walk places and my friends live close by.

why do you hear not to go the rehab route?

i think it all depends on how good your contractor is. you get a jackleg and you might be fucked up. one of my best friends is an architect so i'mma fly him up here for the floor plans, and i think
he'll be able to have everything in order. i heard about this place in BMore where you can get all your windows and cabinets and counters for cheap, so i'mma check that out. but i really am looking forward to maybe designing my own shit. i'm particular like that, and really all i want is a pool table on the main floor.

little to no experience in working with contractors, obtaining permits, putting together floor plans, etc.

and what folks like MEAT are saying in here are really interesting

My ex was from DC and her fam moved out decades ago to District Heights

Her folks back home were either from PG, and living in Silver Spring, or from DC, living elsewhere in Maryland etc, she was the ONLY one living in DC proper

Between visiting all her friends, family, and going to various churches (mostly 7th Day) I got a good scope of the seamlessness of the metro area and the intricacies of the pockets in and around the city itself.

I'm reading more right now

Girl I was talking to is telling me about her ex. Said all he did was lay around and toke up.

I'm like "hold on, doesn't he drive for metro?"

She's like "yeah, so he only smoked that synthetic"

First thought is, why is a 38yr old muhfugga with a good job smoking cheap synthetic?

Second though is, that shit has people kirkin' the fuck out, he's lucky that shit hasn't happened while he's been on shift. And God forbid if he hurts/kills someone with a bus.

Third thought is, why did she mess with a 40yr old synthetic smoker and do I really need to fuck with this chick anymore...

it's such a problem because the "recipe" changes so frequently to skirt drug laws. I've known others who used it that seemed fine, but now it pretty much seems like bath salts part 2

In response to Reply # 0

I love it. My work commute is 30 minutes by metro, 20 minutes by car.
I own a quiet, large condo, abundant parking. I can hit up Navy Yard, Eastern Market, H Street when I want to go out. 20 minutes from Reagan, 30 minutes from BWI.

The lows of living east of the river are how people look and act. Sad, worn down, unhealthy, dusty, overweight, ratchet. I sometimes can't believe what people allow themselves to look like. The supermarket experience is the worst in the world. Ghetto attendants, long lines. I now just get groceries delivered.

Also we have nothing over here. We have to drive to NOVA, PG or downtown DC for anything remotely normal.

I like being a DC resident. It is fun and low key city living. Contemplating moving to PG country (Hyattsvile or Mount Rainier) to enjoy amenities. But I would stay in SE if we had a higher density of middle class people.
