"Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Wyatt, 2011)"
Fri Aug-05-11 08:57 AM by ZooTown74

Critics are loving Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

I was already fucking excited. I thought it looked awesome-- monkeys fucking shit up, what's not to love?

Then, I saw Rotten Tomatoes sitting at 86% this morning, and read this FULL-BLOWN JIZZ-IN-YOUR-PANTS RAVE from Sasha Stone.

Sasha gets probably *too* excited by the review's end, but could this be one of the best movies of the year? Please for the love of God please...

Unleashed: The Rise of the Planet of the Apes is 2011′s Best Film so Far

By Sasha Stone | August 3, 2011

The best movies you never see coming. Into the Age of Anxiety comes this redux of the familiar Planet of the Apes series which relies heavily on that familiarity as it charges forward into uncharted territory. That territory is part breathtaking technology, part human self-loathing for what we’ve done, who we’ve become and our own despairing hopelessness about our future, and part rumination of the animal within: it all vibrates and quakes in this, one of 2011′s best films.

Never underestimate the element of surprise. Expectations weren’t running high — the thinking was it would be as campy as the old Planet of the Apes movies or worse, as bad as the Tim Burton one. What most weren’t expecting, of course, was that the Rise of the Planet of the Apes would be so character driven: because the technology is now seamless, there is very little separation between our awe and our emotional reaction. But still, with a movie like this there will always be those who refuse to take it seriously because technology is scary, which of course, is part of the film’s central theme.

The reason to see this movie is marvel at what we can now do with motion capture if you have the right actor (Andy Serkis) and the right FX (WETA), and a director (Rupert Wyatt) knows how to tell a good story; it’s almost shocking, for instance, how long it takes the movie to get going. It takes its time without rushing the audience headlong into the action. We get little hints of it here and there but at some point it sinks in that we’re not going to get the non-stop action and violence to which our ADD culture has become accustomed. So the audience dials it down, sits back and absorbs this odd character Caesar.

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes comes out the same year as Project Nim, and a year or so after a big chimp bit off a woman’s face. Project Nim is a documentary about animal experimentation gone wrong — this idea that humans could somehow domesticate a chimp and teach him sign language proved that domesticity, the forced nature of suppression, isn’t something you can teach at birth, but rather, something that must be bred out of primates. Nim could not help his animal within. He did not have reason. But it’s perhaps more useful to look at what Nim did have rather than what he didn’t have. And that is what is heightened in the chimps who evolve with the help of a drug in the film.

Apes freak out humans because they are so like us and yet so different. They are the closest thing to us — separated, in some cases, by an astonishing 5% difference between us and chimps. They reveal what we all bury every day: sexual impulses, exposed rage. The animal in us has long been diverted underground but at our core we are still primal and we are apes too. What divides us from them, that 5% difference, is about standing upright and using our much bigger brains. If you study evolution you’ll know that nothing happens that cannot happen: we have bigger brains that can’t get any bigger because of the size of the human pelvis. The size of the human pelvis can’t get any bigger because then we could not walk upright. We needed to walk upright so that we could run from predators and carry our young. These are all just theories as to why humans evolved the way they did and why chimps went the way they did.

No one knows if chimps might evolve due to an environmental factor or a mutation in another million years. They might. And part of that evolution could be intelligence and walking upright. Dolphins, dogs or whales could also evolve. We already know elephants are a lot smarter than any of us ever realized. It is only our own ignorance and narcissism that prevents us from really looking and seeing what animals really are.

The film is infused with our terror and uncertainty about the world we’ve built for ourselves. There is a sense that we’ve taken the hand we’ve been dealt — a hefty hand, six million years or so of evolution — and royally fucked things up. Most of the country is on medication to curb depression, even children. The truth is that our technology is moving much faster than we can manage and while we’re living longer we’re also worried about future – a future that is seeming less and less hopeful as time goes on.

The same kind of distrust and anxiety was woven through the late ’60s and ’70s — so it’s not surprising that their apocalyptic view still resonates. Things are even more tense in 2011 because we really don’t know what will mean the end of the human race though many of us are starting to think it won’t be too far off – could be a super virus, could be nuclear war, could be global warming, could be … cell phones. We just don’t know. And we live with this white noise every day.

It’s quite something to find yourself more moved by a mocap ape driven internally by the master, Andy Serkis, than by any of the live action performances in any film so far this year. It was surprising how much he stuck with me long after the film came to an end and even into the night. It is the careful consideration of his own experience that makes this something exceptional. His emotional array is spectral. At no point do we not buy that these apes have gained intelligence, or had their own intelligence enhanced. At some point the Academy is going to have to give Serkis an Oscar for what he can do with this medium. They have to catch up with it eventually, though that could be a long time coming because the Academy is driven by actors and actors don’t take kindly to the idea that they can be replaced, enhanced, controlled.

Half of the exhilaration here is the director’s sleight of hand. It isn’t so much that the apes are faithfully rendered and seemingly real — so real you can’t believe you are not watching reality — it’s how he keeps the action moving. It’s that the director has such a command of the pace and the action, the film only slows down when we must head back into the human world and follow those stories. But any time it’s on the apes it exists in startling rapid-fire time. It’s as if every time an ape turns its head something falls off the shelf.

What’s most frightening about it in the end is how it reminds us that we’ve trapped even ourselves in a prison of our own making. When the apes decide they’ve had enough, something in us makes us wonder what would it take before we too have had enough?

**So, you will wonder, does The Rise of the Planet of the Apes have a shot at a Best Picture nomination? With Telluride, Venice, London and Toronto coming up it’s hard to imagine it won’t be wiped away by the Big Oscar Movies. If the Academy were truly a forward thinking bunch, which we know they aren’t, it would absolutely be seriously considered. But one must always remember that it’s like Thanksgiving. You have to pick the movie that everyone can get and tolerate. It isn’t about finding the best; it never has been. But a number one vote is a vote that comes from love. If they love it, they will vote for it. Hopefully they can overcome their genre prejudice with something like this. The key will be to celebrate the director. It’s not often that a movie comes out of nowhere like this — so the element of surprise is something they have in their favor.

the action was good, the casting i thought was fine, i just thought the script was really weak, which unless tim wrote the script, isn't necessarily his fault. it still has one of the trillest lines of all time though, when they were sitting at the table and the big ape shut shit down on some BOW YOUR HEADS steeze lol

Why don't some humans take the drug too? I mean, if we were to take the drug, wouldn't that REASSERT our superiority?

*shrug* It CAN'T just be that it gets destroyed. There HAS to be a better reason. Maybe that'll be in a sequel? I'd look forward to that.

He's be on the same level as the apes intellectually but they would be physically much more superior. So we would either need even more intelligence to regain that dominance, or we'd need an increase in physicality to even the playing field.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/08/03/2343758/rise-of-the-planet-of-the-apes.html

By Rene Rodriguez

...That’s the same effect Rise of the Planet of the Apes has on the viewer. You can’t wait for the film to get past its endless set-up and exposition and get to the fun stuff. But the wait is long. This prequel to the 1968 sci-fi classic explains exactly how Earth came to be overrun by hyper-intelligent apes while the human population died out. The idea is genius — what a creative way to relaunch a dormant franchise! — but the execution is something else entirely.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is filled with irritating clichés, such as the men assigned to care for the apes who abuse and taunt the animals for sadistic fun (they’re like prison guards in an exploitation movie). That mistreatment is supposed to justify why the apes eventually rise against us, but the story would have been more interesting if the apes, once the drugs started taking effect, simply decided to wage war on mankind because they deemed themselves superior (arrogance is just as human a trait as a lust for revenge).

Rise of the Planet of the Apes could have done without the romance between Will and his girlfriend Caroline (Freida Pinto), arguably the most irrelevant romantic subplot in cinematic history, or scenes involving highly-skilled professionals who bicker like schoolchildren (no wonder the apes kick our asses), or a needlessly drawn-out middle section detailing the animals’ gradual evolution.

The movie’s pacing is all off: Wyatt dotes on needless plot points other filmmakers would skip. There’s no momentum to the film, no sense of a build-up to an all-out war. Rise of the Planet of the Apes throws out references to previous Apes films to amuse hardcore fans, and the film delivers on its promise to reveal exactly how this doomsday scenario could happen. But rarely has a story about the end of the world seemed so boring.

because the pacing is tedious: a series of explanations that replace compelling narrative or character development. even Ebert (who gave a positive review) complained about Franco's listless usage and uninteresting relationship with Pinto.

But I liked his interactions with his father and Caesar. The love relationship takes MAYBE two minutes of total film, so it is in no way a bother.

Really, Franco is so far away from being the main character that him doing a yeoman job doesn't disturb the film or make it drag. The focus of the film is predominantly Caesar, who is awesome every moment.

I loved that movie as a kid but there's no doubt that shit needed to be redone... as good as the story and acting was (Roddy McDowall & Ricardo Montalban are great) the movie has a real cheesy look to it. So I was pretty excited when saw they were remaking this... now to hear it's well done has me extra juiced.

I really hope they use this is a starting point for a series of new POTA movies... I really want to see the ape world depicted using this technology.

I think the trailers have made people think it's something it's not... If anything some might call it slow. If you didn't care about Caesar the movie wouldn't work unless it was turned into a "brainless action" movie...but the movie takes it's time and get's it right. I'd stop short of calling the movie great (it's very good) but what Andy Serkis and the writers did with Caesar is pure greatness.

At least not a lot of the human scenes w/o some ape shit to carry it.

I like Franco, Pinto & Lithgow just fine but I never really cared about their stories. Cox character was wasted as well. Minor gripe tho.

Most of the movie is all about Caesar's transformation from cute little pet to powerful 'panzee & it's very compelling.

Wasn't a fan of Heston flicks & hated Burton's shit but this was full on beastmode from the start & I dug it.

It's a weird movie, in the sense that it felt more like a Super-Hero origin story than anything. Which is not a bad thing, by any means. The movie is all about Caesar and an hour into it I was thinking it felt like a Spider-Man movie. anyway HIS arc is top notch. A corny line...messed up what should have BEEN A VERY EPIC ONE..but some people clapped anyway.

Don't wanna post to much...

I will say IMO the movie is just as much about race, and class, than scientific breakthrough, so its more like the OG Planet of the apes than many critics are saying

BUT IT IS ALL ABOUT THE APES.

And as for the human characters I think Lithgow was PERFECT, for what he was giving(cast as an alzheimer's patient) and was very believable.

he plays a spoiled, entitled, repugnant asshole of a kid in both movies. so the fact that he can't act for shit helps because those two characters are supposed to be loathed, and he does a GREAT job making you hope he gets offed sooner than later.

the great thing about this one is.... you get to see him get fucked up proper. no such luxury in the potter films.

otherwise, i agree. he's an awful actor.

Seriously, I'm a big fan of the originals, and this is, without a doubt, the start of another classic franchise.

Serkis in particular was excellent, and I'm amazed that motion capture technology has advanced to the point where a CGI Ape could be so expressive.

fucking idea. Let's be honest here, everyone already knows the ending to the original. You weren't going to be able to do that one twice, which is why the Tim Burton joint was a real snoozer. And actually if you stay a little bit after the credits start, they've got a pretty good ending, even though it isn't as surprising as the original.

Over all it's a great movie, and, in my opinion, a great addition to the franchise.

The human stuff with Franco and Pinto (who is given NO character at all, lol) is whatever, but I actually really enjoyed the Lithgow stuff. He's a damn pro, and that storyline could have gone to shit with a lesser actor.

The effects are phenomenal. Give them the Oscar immediately. Best motion capture work to date.

The action is also great, though the Syfy movie fan in me wanted more people to die. The deaths are sparse, and it's for a reason, but all the same, that guilty pleasure part of me was a little blood-thirsty at the film's end.

It's unrealistic to think Serkis will come close to getting an Oscar nom. But I'm glad people are talking about what he does, since what he does is remarkable.

I also thought the explanation of the questions above in this post (why don't the humans just get smarter? how do a select group of apes take over the planet?) is very satisfactorily answered, even if it differs from the original series.

I guess I got enough gore from the one death that wasn't even at the hands of an ape. I thought it was cool to see Caesar still have that sense of humanity (even in battle) instead of going full on savage so soon.

I liked the fact that Caesar recognized when to let people live and when it was necessary to off people. In particular when he let Koba kill Jacobs. He couldn't let him live, but he knew that it wasn't his place to kill him. As the leader he had to be above some of the darker aspects of the rebllion.

That was set up nicely with his facial expression after he accidentally killed Dodge. You could tell he was just trying to get a little revenge & protection by using the hose on him. Clearly didn't expect that outcome & felt bad about it.

i NEVER dug any part of the OG POTA or the Burton rehash, but THIS? ....i was excited the whole film.....

...the fact that it's a "coming of age story" with Ceasar being being antihero i think will throw some people off...cause by the end, i was TOTALLY on his side....

...the funny thing is, with how it ends, i can see the apes just trying to live peacefully in the redwoods and mankind not being able to accept a factor they can't control, and THAT (plus the virus) being the reason things get so fucked up...

it fires perfectly on all cylinders. it never does too much, and always does just enough.

the first hour gives such a sense of wonderment. if ever a movie truly showed you the world through the eyes of a child, this is the one.

if ever a movie moved you to tears- or near them- over the relationship between a father and son, this is the one.

if ever a score hit all the right notes at all the right times, here you go.

answers? in droves. nothing was forced. everything is explained well and plausibly. questions people have are answered in ways only the most hardened cynic would complain about.

purists who wanted a rehash, go jump in a lake.
people who want to complain about the cgi in this one? fly a kite. learn to cook. play some video games. read a book. do anything but watch movies, because you don't deserve this movie. if ceaser isn't above reproach to you from that standpoint, you're impossible to satisfy. period.

it's an amazing movie from start to finish and it was the first "treat" i've had at the theater in ages. scrap that; crazy stupid love was a treat all it's own, but this was special. this was magical. this is why people love the movies, or why the should, or why they would if we got more like it. hats off to all involved.

hmm. i thought it looked great from the first preview and it delivered better than any movie all year. but that's me. i'm curious what looked so terrible to you.

>Frieda Pinto is in though, and she's hot as fuck, it may be
>worth taking a chance on.

-she's probably got ten minutes of total screen time and that might be generous. in fact you could eliminate her character completely and nobody would notice. she has zero importance to anything.

also, if your going to this movie for a piece of female eye candy, don't bother. this is alllllll about ceasar, and if you're coming in to look at a pretty girl and not to watch his story unfold you're better off saving your money and surfing the net for bikini shots of her.

this was an excellent movie all the way around though. not sure if this is for you though, since you hated the previews.

It's a decent flick.

The animals are great. Caesar is a fascinating character, his interactions with the other animals and the humans are phenomenal. You also feel like you understand the orangutan, gorilla, the ugly ape that gets all the tests done on it. You feel for them and you get their motivation.

But all of the humans suck and they're half the film. Franco is mailing it in, Pinto has zippy characterization, the others are mostly cartoons (the exec thats all about the money, the donk from Harry Potter that torments the apes, etc.)

I enjoyed it, no doubt...but it ain't all that.

Franco's not the kind of guy who can take a shitty role and turn it into something interesting. He just doesn't have that aura or personality about him. There's the old saying, "There are no small roles; just small actors" and I think he kind of fits that.

I feel like Joseph Gordon-Levitt might have been better for that role (and a lot easier to buy as a scientist). I could see him adding more of an emotional connection to Caesar that I felt Franco didn't deliver.

Nothing special.

I thought some things were contrived (such as John Lithgow just happening to walk into an open car that had keys in it) and wasn't really mad at FRANCO but thought that Frieda Pinto was wasted and my man who was the executive came off inconsistent.

But I think Serkis did his thing and there was enough destruction and mayhem in that last 45 minutes to keep me entertained, so it was fine.

The car thing was beyond bizarre. I also wasn't exactly sure how these top notch doctors a) didn't realize their project ape was not only pregnant but also had had a baby in the little room and b) how nobody seemed to care that the guy who was exposed to the airborne virus was out sick the next two days.

But those were little things that I didn't mind TOO much. I just felt that the film either needed to get more out of Franco/Pinto or just cut it down a lot and shift to Caesar's POV earlier in the iflm.

He didn't know what the signage for 'giving permission' was... Frieda had to explain it to him (and by extension, the audience)

No, sorry, that's not a plausible reason for leaving his door open. Up until that point, we had seen dude one time, and that was his near-beating of Caesar with a bat. How protecting his family without knowing that a strange ape who suddenly was in his yard was non-threatening makes him an "idiot," I don't know.

Inexplicably leaving the keys in his car is an action that even most idiots wouldn't do and to try to cop a plea and say, "Well the guy's an idiot" is trying too hard to explain away a contrived scene. It's cool if that scene didn't bother you (and honestly, I didn't care about it that much when I saw it) but it is a flawed scene. It's not the end of the world.

Hence, Caesar submits to Franco. And when he kicks lt #1's ass, lieutenant turns up the palm.

In response to Reply # 107

An ape escaped and did what apes do (it's called going ape-shit for a reason) and suddenly it was like, "Ignore all the progress and shut it down! Kill all the apes!" But then it's explained that the ape was pregnant but nobody told anyone about that. I mean, you really dump a project that could cure alzheimers like that?

The ending really bugged me though. Can apes really survive in the Redwoods? "Caesar is home" was about to become "Caesar needs more than leaves and insects" pretty quickly. And you'd think the military or someone would have sent out a team to take care of the apes that just ran roughshod over the Golden Gate Bridge (and the disease wouldn't have spread/doesn't act fast enough to have prevented such an assault.)

I know it was way too much of a risk for a studio to ever go with but I would have preferred getting to Caesar being the protagonist faster and trimmed the human stuff down by half. They could have cut out a lot of the contrivances and spent more time with the most interesting characters, the apes.

Yeah. Just a logic gap there.

I guess the implication was it'd be hard to find/reach the apes in the redwoods-- it's so easy for apes to just disappear in there. As for eating, whenever they want, go back to fucking mainland and stage a coup on a Jack-In-The-Box. Problem solved.

I agree about the contrivances, but I don't know that I agree about Caesar's transformation needing to happen faster-- part of what I liked about the film was how much time it took to show us how gradually Caesar learned, changed, etc. The human characters definitely were nearly all one-note though.

I'd rather have seen them do more with him watching the kids and/or wondering if he was a pet or what his place was and trimmed down Franco's story (and completely eliminated Frieda's character). I know people dug the Flowers for Algernon angle with Lithgow but I think the story would have been better served to have Lithgow be Patient Zero in terms of the virus. They could have worked the spread of the virus into the body of the film and maybe linked the climax of the film with something like Franco trying to get people to quarantine the hospital his dad has been brought to but the cops are too busy trying to stop the apes (who are just trying to get to the redwoods.) As it was, I didn't give a damn about Franco trying to catch up to Caesar and I really had no idea why he was chasing after him. To get him to come home?

Either way, I'd just rather have had seen Caesar as the protagonist earlier on or done something to give the human stuff more heft. The human stuff really bogged the film down for me.

b) how nobody seemed to care that the guy who

They all knew that he was exposed to the virus because his mask was off. If this was realistic at all he would have been quarantined immediately until they knew what was happening with him. At the VERY least, he would have been quarantined as soon as they found out he was sick that next day. The other scientists at the lab just brushed it off when saying "oh, he's been out sick the last couple days."

Andy Serkis . . . what can you even say about this dude? I don't know if what he's doing is technically acting, but whatever it is he's incredible at it. I hope he got paid like Franco or Lithgow or Pinto, because he owned this shit.

I think most of the questions were answered pretty plausibly, although how did Caesar learn to talk? I thought speech was connected to more than just intelligence, but maybe not?

Agree with most of the things said in this post, and I'd love to see them continue with more PotA movies with this as the jump off point.

Question: Was the failed mission to Mars alluded to on the TV and newspaper supposed to be the same one the Charlton Heston and his crew went on in the original film? I felt like they mentioned it too much for it to not have some greater connection to things.

Can y'all list all the throwback referenced for someone like me that has only seen the Burton flick?

"Draco" actually said, "Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!" which is probably the most famous line from the original film (aside from the "You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you. God damn you all to hell!" line said at the very end of the original film).

Both lines were said by Charlton Heston, who is briefly shown on a TV. And for the record, he's dead.

There are other references that are made that others here can help you with.

"It's a madhouse, a madhouse" after spraying Caesar with the water. Heston utter the same line in the POTA. Also Caesar's mother was named Bright Eyes which Zira called Taylor in POTA. There were also a few other character names from the original movie used in this one. Lastly, we see the Icarus shuttle take off in this movie. Icarus is fan given name of the shuttle that Taylor and his crew traveled in.

latimes.com:

>‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’: 21 nods to classic ‘Apes’
Aug. 11, 2011 | 7:48 a.m.

Charlton Heston died in 2008, but the Academy Award winner gets a few seconds of screen time in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” this summer’s prequel to the sci-fi franchise Heston launched in 1968. Heston’s moment — a quick shot of his 1965 movie “The Agony and the Ecstasy” playing on a TV screen at a nasty kennel for apes – is just the most obvious of dozens of references to the earlier “Apes” films embedded in “Rise,” a deliberate bid by screenwriters Rick Jaffe and Amanda Silver to acknowledge the great hairy history of the film series.

“We felt from the beginning we need to create a story that could stand on its own and totally separate from the ‘Planet of the Apes’ series, but we wanted to pay honor to the originals,” said Jaffe, whose script is the seventh in the franchise inspired by French author Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel about a planet where hyper-intelligent apes rule over human slaves. “We tried to do that in various ways– in winks and nods—but on a bigger level, we put a great amount of effort into building from the mythology of the earlier movies.”

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” stars James Franco as Will Rodman, a young scientist seeking a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, and Andy Serkis as Caesar, the clever chimp borne of that research. Fans of the series will notice dozens of Easter eggs Jaffe and Silver planted in the film with the help of its director, Rupert Wyatt.

For ”Apes” diehards, here’s a guide to many of the references–and for the uninitiated, be warned, we’re willing to spoil any movie that opened before the Carter administration:

1. Will Rodman: Franco’s character’s name, is an amalgamation of the names of the screenwriters for the 1968 film, “Twilight Zone” icon Rod Serling (whose full name was Rodman) and Michael Wilson.

2. Caesar: The name of the lead ape in “Rise,” played by Serkis, was the name of the chimp played by Roddy McDowall who leads the ape revolution in 1972′s “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.”

3. ALZ 112: The breakthrough Alzheimer’s treatment Rodman creates is a timely nod to the past — 112 minutes is the running time for the original film.

4. Icarus: A TV newscast playing in the background references the space mission “Icarus, lead by George Taylor,” and a newspaper shown in the third act reveals the vessel has been lost in space. Icarus was the name of the spaceship that crashes on the “Planet of the Apes” in the original film, and Heston’s character name was George Taylor.

5. Dodge Landon: The cruel ape tender played by Hogwarts alumnus Tom Felton is named after Dodge, who was a crew member aboard the Icarus and played by Jeff Burton.

6. John Landon: Brian Cox plays the dark-spirited owner of a primate house and the father of Felton’s malicious character. Their last name, Landon, is the name of the Icarus crew member played by Robert Gunner in the classic film.

7. Maurice: The name of the orangutan who befriends Caesar in the new film is a nod to actor Maurice Evans, who played the orangutan Dr. Zaius in the vintage films.

8. Saddle up: The scene where Caesar emerges from swirling fog astride a mounted policeman’s horse is a nod to the signature early moment in the first film when Heston is shocked to see an ape wearing clothes and riding on horseback.

9. Buck: The big gorilla’s name is a nod to actor Buck Kartalian, the former pro wrestler who played Julius in the classic.

10. Nova’s Café: The coffee shop in the lobby of the biomedical company Gen-Sys is named after Linda Harrison’s character, Nova, who becomes the mate of Heston’s character and appeared in the first two “Apes” films.

11. The Golden Gate Bridge: The scene evokes the scene in “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” when apes charge across a bridge in the climax of the 1972 film.

12. Rocket: The mean ape who makes peace with Caesar after a cookie moment gets his name from Norman Rockett, a set decorator on the 1968 movie.

13. No means no: Caesar’s powerfully enunciated “No!” is a major moment in the new film and ties back into “Escape from the Planet of the Apes” when Cornelius explains that the ascent and revolt by his species began when an ape first uttered the word “No” to protest the human treatment of his kind.

14. Cornelia:: The name of another ape in the new movie, Cornelia, is a nod to McDowall’s role as Cornelius in the original film.

Linda Harrison and Charlton Heston in their "Apes" days (Fox)

15. Jacobs: David Oyelowo plays the mercenary bio-med executive Steven Jacobs in the new film. The character’s name (which is written on a board by one of the chimps at one point in the film) is a tribute to Arthur P. Jacobs, who produced the “Apes” films in the 1960s and 1970s. Jacobs, who had heart problems, died at age 51 in 1973 not long after the fourth sequel was released.

16. Hosed: When Dodge blasts Caesar with a water hose, it’s a nod to Heston’s character being hosed in the ’68 film — which in turn was a reference to police attacking civil rights demonstrators in the real world.

17. Bright Eyes: In the original film, it’s the nickname given to Heston’s character by the ape scientist Zira. In the new film, it’s the nickname given to the intellect-accelerated ape who gives birth to Caesar.

18. Statue of Liberty: Before he attacks a neighbor, Caesar is constructing a model of the Statue of Liberty in his suburban San Francisco home. It is, of course, the sight of that statue demolished on a beach that reveals the true setting of the 1968 film is actually far-future Earth.

19. Linda: The lab assistant named Linda in the new film is another nod to Harrison, who played Nova in the vintage movies.

20. Franklin: Taylor Labine plays Robert Franklin, a heartfelt lab worker who is destined to play an ominous role in human history. The character’s name acknowledges Frankin Schaffner, who directed the 1968 “Apes” movie and went on to direct “Patton,” “Papillon” and “The Boys from Brazil.”

21. Had to say it: Felton’s character, Dodge, gets the honor or delivering two of Heston’s most memorable lines from the 1968 film: “It’s a madhouse! A madhouse!” and “Take your stinkin’ paw off me you damn dirty ape!”

–Rebecca Keegan

In response to Reply # 0

It was more of a coming of age story about the ape than anything else and one of the issues with that is that the first half of the movie focuses on James Franco. It's like there's a POV shift midway through the movie and the apes become the good guys.

I also couldn't believe where they ended it and thought it was lame that the actual fall of the human race is literally anti-climatic as it happens in a mid-credit blip.

But mostly, I just didn't get into the film. Franco was fairly unbelievable, Pinto was shockingly stale and her character was unnecessary. I also felt like a lot of the scenes dragged on, particularly the Golden Gate Bride scene.

And I didn't get the Bright Eyes freakout thing. How could they not notice that the ape was not only pregnant but also had just had a baby?

...but again, this is PTP, there's always some film i've seen no trailers of or heard anything about, being mentioned here....and it's always better than some more widely released (in america) film.....it's just fuuny to me...

" oh you liked the Terminator X? well it was aight, but not better than Fish Eyes Killa (or whatever OTHER shit you on at the time)"

...and btw, i'm not mad at whomever for liking what they like, but we all know the term BEST is subjective...it's an opinion...it's just funny to me that i say this is best, someone comes with some shit outta left field saying it's better...nigga can't let me have MY opinion....the fact that many people say it's great comes into question cause YOU don't think it's that...doesn't change the fact that many people think it's great tho....

'Rise' was good, I dug it.
I just didn't leave the theater with that certain "OMG" feeling that you get when you've felt that you've seen something great.

I must admit however, after all of the extremely positive reviews from critics and friends, plus a great trailer, I had high hopes for it going in. So that might be my bad.

Its a nice prequel to the OG film and may shine brighter because its immediately contrasted to Burton's abhorrent pile.

As mentioned, the baby ape thing made absolutely no sense. How the hell you NOT know the ape is preggo? Could have done that better.

Also, you mean to tell me you raise a chimp in your house for years and nobody says SHIT? Especially after he roams and scares the kids? Nah son.

The movie also had the same problem I have with the first Mission Impossible. All the hot shit is pretty much shown in the commercials. I hate that. Leave a little more for the movie will ya?

Other than that (and Freida Pinto having absolutely no reason for being in this movie, other than giving Franco something to kiss), the movie is very well done. I didn't have a problem with the length, which is used to show why Ceaser rolls like he does. When he shut the gate on Franco, that was pretty moving. Once the revolt started at the ape house, it was on and popping. The mo-cap was fantastic.

Really looking forward to the sequal

they said she was already preggo when she got there. plus when you factor in her heightened intelligence, she was clearly hiding her pregnancy/baby.

>Also, you mean to tell me you raise a chimp in your house for

>scares the kids? Nah son.

there's no reason to believe that he ever left the house on his own before. when he got out and scared the kids, Franco said, "didn't i tell you not to leave the house". and as evidence by ole girl who's friend's pet chimp ripped her face off, people keep exotic animals in their house all the time.

>Mission Impossible. All the hot shit is pretty much shown in

not much i can say here. kinda standard practice these days. still i think it was more about the relationships than the action scenes, but i feel you in general.

i agreed with everything here.

this is set up to be 10 times better.

A lot of people have been asking how a few apes could end up becoming the planet's dominate species... well they answer that question and it makes much more sense than the Heston version does.

There better be more of these.... best reboot Ive seen. Reminds me of the new Star Trek in some ways.

That was by far the best part of the movie. I hope they focus more on that and don't throw in a lackluster human story next time. Wait until the third movie to move the humans (the survivors trying to revolt/escape) back into the protagonist role.

137. "54 Mil opening weekend"
In response to Reply # 0

The possibility of at least one sequel is looking pretty good after this. As good as this movie is, it should have legs as word gets out.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-08-08/-planet-of-the-apes-opens-as-weekend-s-top-film-with-54-million-in-sales.html

‘Planet of the Apes’ Opens as Weekend’s Top Film With $54 Million in Sales

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the prequel to the 1968 science-fiction classic, opened as the No. 1 movie in U.S. and Canada theaters this weekend, with $54 million in ticket sales for News Corp. (NWSA)’s Twentieth Century Fox.

“The Change-Up,” the only other film opening in wide release, was fourth in its debut, generating $13.5 million in sales for Comcast Corp. (CMCSA)’s Universal Pictures, researcher Hollywood.com Box-Office said in an e-mailed statement.

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” featuring James Franco, is the fourth Fox picture to open in first place this year, following “X-Men: First Class,” “Rio” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.” It’s also the first film from Chernin Entertainment, the production company led by former News Corp. President and Chief Operating Officer Peter Chernin. Chernin, 60, resigned from News Corp. in 2009 to produce films and television shows.

“The success of ‘Planet of the Apes’ is better than anyone expected,” Gitesh Pandya, chief executive officer of Boxofficeguru.com, said in an interview. “It’s a testament to the strength of a film that is solid and has good reviews.”

In the film, a chimp used in drug tests is endowed with high intelligence. He leads a rebellion against harsh treatment in the lab, setting the stage for the role reversal of humans and apes explored in the original film. Franco plays a sympathetic scientist who treats the young chimp with kindness.
‘Smurfs’ Hold Second

Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” films, co-stars as one of the chimp’s antagonists. The cast also includes Freida Pinto and John Lithgow. The effects-heavy movie cost about $90 million to make, according to the Internet Movie Database. The website Boxoffice.com forecast weekend sales of $39 million.

Last week’s second-place film, Sony Corp. (6758)’s “The Smurfs,” held its position with revenue of $21 million. Combining live action and computer effects, “The Smurfs” stars Neil Patrick Harris as a New Yorker who helps the tiny, blue creatures after they are forced from their village by an evil wizard. The movie generated worldwide sales of $129 million in the first 10 days of its release, Hollywood.com said.

The space-invader western “Cowboys & Aliens” fell to third from first with sales of $15.7 million. The film stars Daniel Craig as a gunslinger who joins with cowhands and Indians to resist an attack from another planet. The movie, produced by Steven Spielberg, was made for an estimated $163 million and has taken in $67.4 million in the U.S. since its Aug. 4 debut.
Raunchy Comedy Fades

In “The Change-Up,” Jason Bateman plays a harried father and husband who swaps bodies, and lifestyles, with his swinging, single buddy, played by Ryan Reynolds. Olivia Wilde and Alan Arkin co-star. The film was made for an estimated $52 million and was expected to take in $13.5 million, according to Boxofficemojo.com.

The movie’s “disappointing” opening can be attributed to bad reviews and competition from other R-rated comedies which opened this summer, Pandya said.

The raunchy brand of comedies offered by “Change-Up” is “a little late to the game” and there isn’t “a market for them anymore,” he said.

“Captain America: The First Avenger,” slipped to fifth from third with sales of $13 million for Viacom Inc. (VIA/B)’s Paramount Pictures. The PG-13 rated film has posted $143.2 million of domestic ticket sales since opening as the No. 1 film during the weekend of July 25.

Weekend revenue for the top 12 films rose 28.3 percent to $157 million from a year earlier, Hollywood.com said.

Domestic box-office sales this year have declined 4.8 percent to $6.7 billion, while attendance is down 5.7 percent.

The amounts below are based on actual ticket sales for Aug. 5-6 and estimates for yesterday.

very good movie overall. couple small plot holes but for the most part it's very solid with very few cheesy moments. and the moments that were cheesy, they kept very brief which was appreciated.

the overall emotion you feel toward these apes is stunning and Ceasar is the best on-screen character (cgi or human) i've seen in a while.

i was thoroughly impressed.

They could start the next movie right after this one and have it be about the virus spreading and apes taking over the planet. This would be interesting because many people expected Rise to go that far and not stop once that apes got free. We'd get to see way more ape carnage because there could essentially be a full out war between the apes whose numbers would be much greater as the virus spreads and more apes become intelligent) and the remaining humans. The human society would have likely broken down after the massive loss of life due to the virus. A possible story arc here could be a war among the remaining humans, involving rogue nukes since the governments may have dissolved/lost control, and you could even have the apes waging war against the humans to stop them from destroying the planet. It would allow them to further develop Caesar's character as well as show how the ape society developed. They could also foreshadow a third movie by dropping more hints about the missing Mars shuttle.

Or they could have the next movie essentially be a remake of the original with the astronauts from the Mars mission landing back on Earth far into the future after going through a wormhole but seeing that apes are now the dominant species. But they would have to come up with something to differentiate it from the original to keep it from being boring though, and I'm not sure how they would do that.

the part where Caeser spoke "this is my home" was kind of corny. The movie was fucking ill because it really made you root for Caesar and when C got the Gorilla to get his back on the bully Chimp at the sanctuary had me amped you knew once he got the gorilla on board that it was On like Donkey Kong (hahahah, sorry). The ending after a few minutes of credits with the pilot at the airport coughing that shit up really put things into perspective. It made the whole story and pre-sequel somewhat believable.

especially considering apes don't have vocal chords. i thought it would've been much better if he signed that shit instead.

but it would have been FAR worse if he was talking throughout the entire movie, which is what i sort of expected.

and yeah, you knew when he got the gorilla shit was about to get real. i actually felt some kinda way when he died at the end.

I wasn't mad at all when Caesar spoke on those two occasions & felt that final line was a perfect way to end it.

That being said, I think one of the reasons I enjoyed this movie more than Burton's & Heston's was because the apes weren't talking for the most part & it was more realistic. I'm a little concerned the sequel wont be as intriguing if they're talking the whole time but I'd give it shot regardless.

^^^ this.

also, i'm NOT a fan of the original movie(s) whatsoever. a movie about talking apes seems like the dumbest premise in the world to me - which is exactly why i found the prequel so enjoyable.

If it was more about the apes it would have been better, but I could't help but notice there wasn't much gunfire or monkey death at all, and a lot (A LOT) of things came off as very convenient or overlooked. It felt like Caeser was the only character who had any thought put into him at all, and even he had some moments that didn't seem to have any foundation, mainly when he spoke.

My main gripe though is based on the reviews that stated it was a pretty emotional flick and the post on here that went as far as to say it felt like seeing the world through a child's eyes. I felt like it was a pretty cold, emotionally void movie. The only time I was really invested in it was when Caeser was growing into his role as a leader at the ape prison (speaking of which, do those actually exist?). Otherwise, it was mostly a good way to kill two hours at the theater for me.

And that damn dirty ape line felt exceptionally blatant to me, that character never gave off the sort of vibe that would have him saying something like that.

not the movie, the first hour or so.

>I felt like it was a pretty cold, emotionally void

how/why was it cold and void of emotion, in your opinion? there were plenty of moments that, imo, illustrated quite well the elements of child like discovery and emotioanl attachments

-ceasar watching from the window in curiosity
-ceasar being fed as an infant
-ceasar protecting his "grandfather" and hugging him after
-ceasar wanting-no, pining- to go home
-ceasar gently correcting gramps grip at the breakfast table
-ceasar drawing- and subsequently erasing- his the window of his home. this in itself was a powerful moment that symbolized the strength of the bonds he developed with his human "parents".
-ceasar questioning his father and his origins- to his father

i could go on because there are several more. there were so many scenes that weaved the fabric of his relationships with his human "family" and the love/pain he felt in respective moments. so when someone calls it a cold and emotionless movie, it's a little curious to me when i can pull moment after moment that illustrates those elements with ease.... and i'd like to know what was so cold and void to you.

meh... the og line was the same way imo. the line is and always has been the thickest b movie cheese imagineable- which, imo, is part of why it's so iconic.

Agreed...the way they did that line was PERFECT in this movie. The line grabbed everyone's attention in the theater (good or bad) which made it the perfect setup for the "NOOOOOOO" line that followed it. If they had Caesar speak his first word at any other time it wouldn't have felt nearly as epic. They way they did it made the entire theater feel like we were seeing something special...

that's all I can really say. The movie felt really anti-climactic with the bridge battle that didn't see many casualties and the police force that seemingly gave up for no reason other than utter fear. The "villain", depending on whether you want to call him Draco or Jacobs, felt like a vessel of tropes rather than a living, breathing human being. Much like the main characters, neither of them felt like they were necessary at all to the movie, they were just stereotypes shoehorned into the narrative.

I felt invested in the jail scenes and I said as much. But the rest of the movie just felt like entertaining escapist theatre, I definitely didn't walk away from the movie feeling like I just saw something I was disappointed to see end, like I did Inception or Black Swan (I don't see movies in theaters very often). And the friend I saw it with didn't have much to say about the movie either, other than he felt the same way about the movie seeming off in some way. We liked the monkies, we could have done without all the rest of it.

Just came from it and I didn't notice before that Bright Eyes was pregnant when they brought her in (which makes sense in terms of them not noticing as opposed to her being in the lab forever) and that she tried to reopen the door after it shut to get back to the kid.

I read a post somewhere in here where someone said "Why did she leave him if she was trying to protect him?" and when I saw the door not opening it made more sense.

I did wonder how it was that when C pierced the medicine that was in the kitchen why didn't that effect Will and Freida...I saw that they took special care to show him inhaling all of the visible gas but still it made me pause.

all the elements are there: the missing Mars mission crew, the virus that will be used to probably wipe out all humans. But I personally would prefer seing that step being a movie: where the upper hand changes. People are dying and they try to attack the apes in order to experiment with their immune system, since they have the answer. And apes becoming smarter and more dominant. That could be awesome. LOL of course its just wishful thinking.

In response to Reply # 0

ew.com:

>Rise of the Planet of the Apes' screenwriters: 'We pictured a trilogy'
by Darren Franich

Rise of the Planet of the Apes tore up the box office last weekend, earning $54 million — a surprising showing for the seventh film in a series that’s over 40 years old. EW caught up with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the married screenwriters who crafted the primate preboot, to talk about the exciting difficulty of writing a character who never speaks and their vague-but-intriguing ideas for a Rise sequel — or rather, sequels — including the slight implication that Taylor, the character Charlton Heston played in the original Apes, might be making a return journey.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It’s interesting that the character audiences are most responding to in the film is Caesar, the rebel chimpanzee played by Andy Serkis. Was it difficult to write a character who doesn’t have any dialogue?

RICK JAFFA: That was our challenge.

AMANDA SILVER: It put extra pressure on us, in a good way, to tell a story visually without dialogue. I think — thinking back on my film school days! — that’s what you look for. Yes, Paddy Chayefsky has great dialogue, and you aspire to do that as well. But film is a visual medium, and what can you show and not tell? Caesar was the genesis of the story. Rick came up with the idea for this when he was looking through his idea file. He’d cut out some articles about chimpanzees raised in homes, and he thought, “My god, this would make a great reboot for Planet of the Apes.” We kind of fell in love with Caesar. We didn’t think of him specifically as a chimpanzee. We thought of him as a full character. Because he didn’t have dialogue, it put extra pressure on us in a good way to tell a story visually without the dialogue.

RJ: We did a lot of research, and a lot of reading online, about some very specific primates who have become somewhat well-known. There’s that great documentary out right now, Project Nim; we read about him. There’s another one, Kanzi, who was…

AS: He was a gorilla, right?

RJ: No, I believe he was a….

Amanda and Rick in unison: …A bonobo!

EW: The film bears a slight similarity to Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, the fourth film in Apes series. Did you use that film as a signpost for Rise?

RJ: Not in the beginning! We laid out the story and pitched the idea to Fox, and had gotten hired, and okayed to write and produce this thing. It was at that point we went back and started studying the old movies. We already had the movie laid out. I think some of the connections to Conquest are on purpose, but others are coincidental. “Unlikely character becoming a leader and leading his people to freedom” — it’s also a Moses story.

EW: If this is the Moses story — a leader taking his people to freedom — then do you see the potential sequel as a kind of Joshua story, with the Apes fighting wars and conquering the world?

AS: I’m touching wood, because I’m superstitious! We definitely have ideas for where the sequel — plural, where the sequels — would take us. And those were kind of built into –

RJ: — the construction of the narrative already. There hasn’t been an official discussion yet about a sequel, because I think everyone still doesn’t want to jinx where we are. But we definitely have ideas.
AS: When we started this, we knew that this movie would stand on its own, and we designed it that way. But if it didn’t stand on its own, we pictured a trilogy that would start with this movie.

EW: I’m definitely intrigued to see what happens to the Icarus mission, the spaceship that hovers around the background of the plot of Rise.

RJ: We definitely have ideas about that! What better plant can you put in a script then, “Oh my god, Taylor’s going up again!”

EW: One of my favorite parts of the Apes franchise is the pulpy grandiosity of the later titles: Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, and now Rise of the Planet of the Apes. What’s your dream-title for a Rise sequel?

RJ: We’re gonna have to figure that one out. That’s a great question. We do have a good sense of what will be in the sequel. Maybe in 20 years, the last one will be called Success of the Planet of the Apes.

AS: It’s that B-movie flair, that excitement. We haven’t found the cheesy-but-fun noun that would fit the action that we’re seeing.

RJ: Maybe Revenge.

this one left off exactly, with the humans dying from the virus and the apes having a power struggle between Caesar and Koba, war between the remaining humans and the apes, ending with the apes in control. Then the third movie would be a remake of Planet of the Apes with the shuttle landing back on earth way in the future with the apes as the dominant species. They'd have to find some way to make that movie original though or it would be pretty anti-climatic after the first two.

Answered stuff exactly how they should, set up the OG version perfectly.

Sure there were parts that were questionable at first (Caesar talking seemed too early), but it didn't take away from the overall movie. Hell, that scene when he screamed/grunted NO to Draco was risky, but it worked perfectly, might even be the movie's best part.

THIS is a turn-your-brain-off-get-yo-popcorn-ready blockbuster.

it's not gonna win any big awards...Franco is half-lidded throughout...Pinto's character is one of the most underwritten females ever....there are plenty of plot holes....Draco is a horrible overractor...Cox is wasted...the CG is uneven.

BUT!

the shit is fun as hell! the film makers cared just enough about the characters to keep you invested and spent all of their energy where it mattered - on Caesar! what an awesome character...you end up rooting for him so much that you're actually happy to watch human genocide.

this is a TEXTBOOK enjoyable summer flick. and fuck each and every one of y'all who tried to put Transformers 3 in the same category.

mindless popcorn flicks are not created equally
matter of fact, most people readily admitted the flawed nature of T3

the problem is your a whiny, cock sucking bitch who can't handle it when people enjoy flawed movies in spite of those flaws.

the problem is you're a sniveling cunt who threw a tantrum because people didn't agree with you in that thread.

the problem here is you're still a condescending asshole who clearly doesn't understand that it's entirely possible to enjoy both movies and not think they're anywhere close to each other in quality.

in closing, go fuck yourself in the ass with a splintered broom handle. why? because that's how you get down on this subject.

this was a good ass movie that wasn't perfect
t3 manages to be enjoyable in spite itself
the two aren't in the same class at all and you should eat ground glass for even making the comparison to begin with.

oh and while you're going to take this reply super duper serious and reply with some dumbass "you're mad" bullshit, it should be noted that i'm just trying to kill 10 minutes of time and you just so happened to get 2 of them.

by that logic, in real life that happens as a result of a chance encounter should be labeled the same way.

to me, the idea that the same virus that gave the apes higher intelligence would also debilitate humans was a great one; the spread being an accident makes perfect sense, and imo was the best possible course of action. it's poetic, actually.

here we were, in effect playing god like always, being killed by our own creation on two separate fronts. sure, everything can be done better but this was far more than "acceptable"; it was well done and to be honest, the movie didn't need too much time spent on how we went down. this was about the apes; so to me, the better story is the one where our downfall arrives in a moment of serendipity, just the way it happened.

and a much cleaner and a more reasonable explanation than we got with the original series.

..instead, its a great example of imbalance and failed execution

and before i go any further let me g'head and address the cgi fanatics out there: great work on the apes

but that's as far as this movie goes regardin' solid work.

the cast was horrible

normally, i take a light-hearted approach to plot/dialogue/acting durin' a "summer blockbuster" but this film played itself by bringin' in some reputable vets.

franco
lithgow
cox

this should've been enough to float this movie on the cgi cloud to glory. instead, it falls flat on its face.

even pinto's beauty couldn't save the lackluster scenes of human interaction in this film.

*forget the fact that they use just about every cliché you can think of (includin' a godfather-esque seen that COULD'VE held comedic humor if executed correctly).

the worst part about this film is that once again, it wasted a perfect opportunity to turn simple brilliance into a bonafied classic. the story's there, they just need to let it happen instead of forcin' it.

in the end, i was hopin' every human in the cast was killed, just so there's no chance of these actors fuckin' up the sequel as well

*i'm convinced this franchise will be recycled every generation just to keep certain people on their toes...

..and miles to go before i sleep...

Chimp/Ape culture. I think a lot of people missed those, but I'm a wild life nerd so I caught them. The first one was (as some folks in here picked up on) the "asking permission" hand signal. Chimps and Gorillas are both known to do that. It's not quite as submissive (as in with the head bowed) as in the movie, but they do that.

Another one was how Caesar was treated when he first got to Chimp jail. Chimps are not too welcoming to outsiders at first and will attack them/haze them for a while before accepting them.

A third was how the Alpha chimp attacked Caesar after he went to the top of the tree. In chimp culture, a chimp lower in the social standing sitting above someone above him is a blatant offense and he will be attacked for doing such. So Caesar having no real knowledge of chimp culture doing that, and subsequently being attacked, was pretty cool.

Anyway, I saw it today.
I laughed - HARD when homie came through on the horse, when he and the crew were rolling the trolley... a host of other parts. The one grilling as he walked past the fire. There was so much to laugh at. The fucking Orang just happening to speak sign language but just chillin.

Occasionally Franco's poor decision making skills took me out of the story. I don't demand a Planet of the Apes movie to be "hard sci-fi" but they weren't even making the effort to make this shit sound the least bit scientific. Between him and his boss there seemed to be a bit too much "winging it" to feel convincing. I've been to Denny's that followed tighter protocols.

And was I the only one who thought the first half was more intense than the second? That whole home life Franco had going was just a ticking time bomb between Caesar and his dad. That shit hurt my stomach.

Once things went apeshit, I was actually able to relax a little.

But yeah, a dope origin story, and everything regarding Caesar was awesome. I loved it.
