"COSBY: Is his legacy/career salvageable? "

If you're Olivia Pope, what would you do to try and salvage him? Or is he DONE completely?

"You don't like climbing trees?......You're missin' out." - Michael Jackson

"But Michael, you're a 44-year-old man now, what do you get out of
this?" - Martin Bashir

Hell, apparently the judge who released the disposition used his 'pound cake' speech as one of the reasons to release it.

His ass should have been contrite and apologetic, admitted he had a problem, etc. Instead he's doubled down on the denial bullshit for a decade, on top of his attempted run as a 'moral crusader'

GQ did an article that sums up my thoughts on the first case.

the second case was weaker than the first.

but I had to deal with the idea that my hero might be a child molsestor. I decided even if he did it, MJ as a symbol, and an artist is seperate from michael joe jackson, the person.

bill cosby is also a hero of mine. him being a rapist doesn't change anything as far as his art is concerned.

look at my screenname.
do i strike you as somebody that would have let my kid go to Neverland to meet michael jackson alone?

anyway, like most parents, i wouldn't let unvetted strangers babysit my kid.

i wouldn't let my father babysit my kids.

so that's no kind of standard.

When R Kelly was going thru his whatever...I shat all on him. I didn't like him before the (true) accusations...I shit on anyone that rode for his music...fuck that dude and all he produces.

Now Bill Cosby has me in the same position.

Try as I might...I can't discredit the importance of The OG Electric Company....Fat Albert....Bill Cosby Himself....the classic films with Sidney Poitier....Martin's March....Picture Pages...A Different World....The Cosby Show....

I just can't. Those shows formed my childhood and play a great part in the man that I am today.

So now I find myself justifying the same shit that I denounced people for doing with R Kelly.

Granted....we have never fully mined the cultural value of 12 Play.....

I said all that to say that Bill Cosby the man is toast. He needs to retire and deal with the collateral damage...because it in no way measures up to the psychological damage he's done to countless women over the years. I'm not trying to sit and build with Bill Cosby the man.

But his body of work is still important. The lessons I learned by watching a black family that resembled MY family on screen for the 1st time still resonate.

I'm a hypocrite now.

And I'm perfectly cool with that.

Sometimes life isn't simple.

Well the artistic contributions he named, anyway.
This is a man who had a broadcast where he brought in a psychologist to examine
the results of racism on children and the art they produce and the stealing renowned
artists did from African art.

Why does it matter that his art isn't always "positive?"

A show like Fat Albert addressed life issues and perspectives for children.
The aforementioned examination of the affects of racism on children is valuable.

I can't entertain you questioning why that's different from Bump & Grind.

R. Kelly ain't Bill Cosby. it's fine to think that Cosby's cultural contributions are such that your enjoyment of them trumps whatever ill-feelings you have toward him due to his bad acts. and that Kelly's contributions don't move you enough to allow you to overlook his bad acts and enjoy his music and videos.

if Pete had come clean about his actions, he'd be in the Hall of Fame today. There wouldn't be much more collateral damage than what he did to himself.

If Bill had come clean about his actions...he would have not only tarnished his "legacy"...but he would have opened himself up to countless lawsuits.

Snot quite the same.

Now he's old and he's never getting in. Can't say I feel sorry for him.

the way that nerd-ass journalists have a strangle-hold on the BBHOF is absurd. and they're raking Pete over the coals for silly reasons, IMO. unless it can be proved he cheated i think he belongs in the HOF and the entry can include info about the betting scandal and all of that. but the man's achievements on the field still stand and to exclude them and him from the HOF diminishes the HOF.

hell none of the known and busted PED users' records have been voided.

Pete Rose is still the undisputed Hit King. But he is banned from the HOF any further involvement with MLB.

And for a good 6 months alot of stations wouldn't play his music anymore. Ignition came out and there was a slight murmer. Then Step In The Name Of Love came out and everyone collectively realized they couldn't ignore it and just gave in.

The difference is Kellz wasn't 80 years old and had the energy to go on. Cos probably can't pull that kind of rabbit out of his hat.

that venue when he told that joke. and that there had been calls to cancel the show. and i believe at least a few shows had been canceled.

i also know that Cosby will not be able to sit for any interview w/any reputable journalist w/o being asked about these allegations. and if he continues to dodge the questions that is likely to increase the public's bad feelings toward him. yes, he will have his supporters but they seem relatively few in number. his problem going forward is that these allegations will place a cloud over anything else he does. if he wants to deal w/that then i wish him the best. but he's pretty much stuck doing stand-up shows in venues that will have him. i don't see any TV network working w/him - to wit, NBC recently canceled a planned tv show in the wake of these allegations. i don't see him being cast in any movie. he might be able to secure speaking engagements but not the kind he used to get. same w/stand-up gigs. and any appearance he makes will be shrouded w/protestors outside the venues and possibly inside. a circus will follow him everywhere. if he thinks those gigs are worth all of that drama then he should go for it.

fuck you.

i like and appreciate the past work
but he's one of those figures where as an audience member
you can be careful in how you choose to show support

i wouldn't cancel his shows because the other actors are affected and we don't know the level of their involvement if at all

he can live off his proceed in disgrace and that disgrace will also be apart of his legacy

He ended up turning into a figure of sadness and pity.

There isn't a huge cloud of doubt about Cosby now and he's someone who kinda bleed away his good will over the years even outside of the accusations.

Unless Bill Cosby goes out pulling babies out of a fire, history won't be as kind.

One really funny viral video could go along way to re-starting his career as an old comic

But the combo of trying to moralize on the black community like he was, with the general unrepentant tone surrounding the accusations; he ain't got the savvy to continue his Hall of Fame career

In response to Reply # 0
Thu Jul-09-15 10:05 AM by spenzalii

You could say Cosby was simply playing a role, and his life off camera was totally different, which honestly you could say about any number of celebrities. That said he did seem to take the Cliff Huxtable persona public for years so when the details of his sordid private life came out it makes it much harder to stomach. Still, does that make any of his art less valid?Looked at in a different light, yes. But diminished?

I've got nothing. But to the original post's question, just disappear. If you want to make one statement to apologize, fine. But after that just take your money and go away. Things will be better after the eulogy

redemption *IF* he hadn't pissed off the thought leaders with his moralizing and pull-up-your-pants stuff for the last 10 - 15 years. That turned most of them against him a while ago. So when this suddenly ignited last year, they were ready to be done with him anyway.

I'm saying that if Cosby had always maintained good relations with that set, the overall conversation would be different, now. There would probably be more vocal calls from B/black thought leaders to separate the man from the art. I'm not really seeing much of that now, though, apart from this board, or the knuckledraggers who still insist that this is all a conspiracy to bring him down.

anyway, i, joe corn mo,
seperate art from artists.

i love miles davis, james brown,

me and "those types" love that liberal hippie music, I guess.

anyway, if we throw terrible ppl's legacy away... ain't much great art left.

none of the Black ppl i know in real life have started
disliking the cosby show because of the rapings.

furthermore, ppl will know who bill cosby is because many popular comedians today cite him as an influence and a god.

ppl that are interested in seinfeld will learn about cosby.

ppl interested in chris rock will learn about cosby.

ppl interested in louie ck will learn about cosby.

ppl interested in eddie murphy
will learn about cosby.

in other words, ppl that are in the know will keep his legacy alive.

I know about mobs mabley because
bernie mac name checked her.

cosby will be known for the same reasons.

his legacy is safe.
tastemakers will keep it alive.

Even the way he talked to that one interviewer was extremely manipulative and evil. Lord knows what type of emotional abuse she's endured from him.

"They used to call me Baby Luke....but now? The whole damn 2 Liiiive Crew."

I feel like there will still be some major celeb supporters there, but it'll be interesting to see what is said about him there, and especially in the media. People like to forget the negative things once you die, but most folks are able to redeem themselves a bit before death...I doubt he'll have that opportunity.

at different levels of fame and notoriety. Hollywood has proven time and time again that no matter where you are in your career, if you keep your head down long enough and do something people enjoy, they'll forget about what you did.
