"...Becuz Q-Tip Is My Friend And He Asked Me To..."
Sat Oct-06-07 01:07 AM by FNF UP UP AND AWAY

So I've explained this to a lot of people...let me name drop a few:

#1 Fab 5 Freddy
#2 Q-TIP!!!!...THAT'S RIGHT THE LEADER OF THE GROUP HIMSELF!!!
#3 Common
#4 Questlove

and more....ahem....

"I DID NOT GROW UP ON ATCQ!!!..."

THE LITTLE GHETTO KID FROM THE MEAN STREETS OF THE WESTSIDE OF CHICAGO GREW UP ON SPICE 1, 8-BALL & MJG, NWA AND SNOOP DOGG...

I WASNT A BACKPACKER RAP ENTHUSIAST!!!...I NEVER CLAIMED TO BE...I GREW UP ON GANGSTA RAP!!!

HAVE I LISTENED TO MM IN ITS ENTIRETY?...NO!!!...(Sorry Quest)...

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSES AND YOUR SACRED COWS...SOME OF YA'LL MAKE ME SICK...

AND FYI WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY OFFERED TO ME I TURNED IT DOWN BECAUSE I FELT IT WAS OUT OF PLACE FOR ME TO BE HONORING THEM BECAUSE WHILE I WAS FULLY AWARE OF THEIR IMPACT IN HIP-HOP I WASNT REALLY AWARE OF THEIR MUSIC LIKE THAT...BUT GUESS WHO WANTED ME TO BE APART OF IT....HMMMM...HOW ABOUT...Q-TIP!!!...

SO NOW ARE YOU GOING TO HATE ON "ATCQ" BECAUSE THEY WANTED SOMEBODY WHO DIDNT REALLY KNOW THERE MUSIC TO HONOR THEM BY COVERING SOME OF THEIR MUSIC?...THINK ON THAT OKP'S

P.S. I FORGET THE WORDS TO SOME OF MY OWN SONGS ON STAGE...HEY IT HAPPENS...

THE COOL DEC. 18TH...

"SUPERSTAR"
A HYPE WILLIAMS PRODUCTION
COMING SOON

I will say that it would still be worthwhile to check out Tribe, the group and their music. The similarities between your music/messages, even with your proclamation of never hearing or listening to them, is just testament that history repeats itself.

I didn't grow up with Marvin or James or Sly but I'll be damned if their music isn't a part of my makeup. Music is devoid of time in its influence and Tribe's music is timeless and doesn't age (shit, at least to me)

Tribe is the most consistent and, my personal favorite, hip hop group of all time. The fact that Tip asked you to be a part of it is indeed an honor but I wouldn't get too caught up in forgetting the words to whatever or handing out online kneejerk reactions to whatever. Worse things can, do and will continue to happen.

It's the way that you dismissed a classic record that has touched millions of lives just to make a point. "I've never listened to Midnight and I don't care to". Personally, I thought it was immature and crass of you as an artist to talk that way about a record that changed my life, so I have a harder time taking your music seriously. You show no respect, so it's hard to respect you. And I repeat, it was the WAY you expressed yourself, as if to say "fuck Midnight Marauders, I don't need to hear that shit, you backpackers need to get over yourself". Handle your cool a little better, dude.

You should be ashamed of the way you're acting, you're acting like a 6 year old.

You think I'm a Lupe stan? I'm not. I like his music, just not as much as I hate whiny internet cats crying about how Lupe hurt their feelings by not giving their precious enough attention. Grow some fucking skin, I can't believe you survive in the real world.

It's late here, and I've been working for around 14 hours on this thing that I've been working on, and visiting OKP has been my periodic momentary respite during this time. I've been getting a little short in the last few hours with what has seemed to me to be an overbearing hate on the boards lately over every little thing.

That last response was a little over the top, but I meant most of it. This sort of petty self-important hate/whining is one of the things that makes me embarassed about these boards, it really gets pretty bad here. This Lupe fiasco is just a microcosm of it, where everyone has their own idea about how an artist should be conforming to how he or she wishes the artist should be, and then whines because it isn't so. You want to see changes made make your own records dayum.

But lol on calling me on my crankiness, sorry if I was a little harsh.

lol, i appreciate you being diplomatic about it, that's love.
To clarify, I don't care if Lu hates Tribe, loves Tribe. I'm only giving Lu shit because I think he's talented. Too talented to try to be a badass about not liking a milestone '90s record. As a listener, I think he's so busy trying not to look irked by public opinion. In his efforts to appear inpenetrable, he just looks vulnerable anyway. In my opinion, he should drop the 'you can't figure me out' act and write phenomenal, honest music. My intentions are not those of your run-of-the-mill underground fundamentalist. I'm on a different page. I can appreciate where you're coming from, but that's not my bag.

Peace, man.

your biggest non mixtape songs are songs that fit in the vein of music tribe/the ummah did and have been songs made with folks that hold them in high regard.

irony and sarcasm as emotional armor is for pretentious teenagers.

you're bigger and better than that.

i been listening to tribe since 89. i still don't know what q tip says in the hook.

He's pretty damn wack. I ain't gonna judge what dude wants to listen to but its kinda suspect that he would be into the *gangsta* rap, but his music doesn't reflect that. I mean normally an artists music reflects who their influences were/are. Lupes music is reminiscent of the Native Tongue movement, which *according to Lupe* he obviously wasn't checking for, begging the question who DID influence his style.

He's just full of shit to me. The more he talks, the more he exposes himself

this is a new era. it pays to be diplomatic. why? b/c people don't have to buy your cd. and unlike the dubbing era, posting a link containing mp3s of your album can 'dub' a copy for dozens of people outside someone's circle of friends (globally, actually), said dozens of people who then can virally spread your work to dozens more.

right now, you're getting reverse word of mouth. discussion boards are where some of the most fervent 'word of mouth spreaders' are...these are the people who pull other folks' shirt sleeves and insist folks listen to little known artists or artists who may only have one song on the radio (say, kick push, for example). so, now you have a small circle of upset people who when your name comes up, they think 'oh yeah, the guy who came off like as a--hole at okayplayer'. shrug.

me personally? someone sent me your album. i was actually going to buy it, then this whole midnight marauders fiasco broke out. i watched how you handled yourself and you came off pretty badly. so, my impulse to buy turned to an impulse to shrug (see shrug above).

and my impulse to spread the word about your music evaporated too.

(insert shrug)

obviously you don't care about any of this though. good luck on your path.

it really wasn't all that. dude said 'never heard it, not particularly interested'. that's all. no need to get all 'well eff you too'; folks are acting like he said 'tribe is WACK and i refute their importance' when it was actually 'yeah they're important but i got other things lined up before i go listen to MM'

ps. i've never listened to Reflection Eternal's album, and i don't have any particular interest in going back to see what folks were geeked about. but i'm cool with that one song where mayne man clarified how to say his name...

People who liked his music were offering to send him MP3s of Midnight Marauders for free and dude was like 'I don't want to hear it'. Tribe is a well respected group, he's friends with their 'frontman', and a bunch of his fans were urging him to check it out. That was strike one, just on some 'wow, my fans want to give me something they'd like me to check out...f--k that' throw-a-gift-in-the-garbage steez. Strike two was when dude came back repeatedly on some 'nyah nyah nyah, I still ain't listened to it'. Strike three was when dude was invited by Q-Tip to honor ATCQ and this cat couldn't take the time to get the lyrics right. I mean, come on. Remembering your lyrics is MC Stage Performance Rule NUMBER ONE. Not remembering someone ELSE's lyrics during a TV taping of a tribute to them after being PERSONALLY ASKED by one of their members to perform is f--king ridiculous. It's unprofessional and it shows a lack of respect for his craft. And now he comes here AGAIN on some 'I f--ked up the lyrics AND WHAT?'.

How childish is that? He ethered himself...

The funny thing is, Tip asked him to perform. Spice 1 probably doesn't even know this guy is alive. SMH.

see, the 'no, i don't NEED to listen to Tribe' thing is ok- i saw a lot of beef with that first transaction and i have no problem with Lupe on that issue.

but after thinking about it, damn- he came back for what? cats that flamed him out are the LAST cats he needs to tell 'btw, Tip asked me to rep 'em and i still have not and don't NEED to listen to Tribe'.

and the worst part- it'd just have been a li'l 150post thread about his very very minor error if he would've stayed ghost on the issue instead of coming off like 'ha, Tip is asking me and i STILL ain't listening to his music!' ('specially when you factor in the 'ps- i fooked the lyrics up too, oh well')

In response to Reply # 28

Artists have been making controversial statements about the accepted Canon(s) of any given artform or genre - far more controversial than any quote Lupe's put out there - for ages. Controversial statements about a tradition's classics have virtually built pop music. And, like Lupe's, they're usually statements that, if we were two unknown folks just having a conversation together, would hardly be regarded as inflammatory but rather as the sharing of opinion and something to poke fun at someone over... the genesis of a new recurring inside joke...

In all the heat over those various controversial statements, a lot of arguments have been made for why artists need to show respect to a given tradition, indeed immerse themselves in that given tradition.

But never... never... never has the excuse you've made above been used... which basically amounts to:

"You neglecting a record hurts my feelings."

Say what?!?!?!!?

And you know what, thats cool.

But if you're going to do a tribute for an artist, any artist and you don't even take the time to learn the words to their hit song off of principle, "I don't listen to (insert said artist here)" you're wack. Thats the lamest excuse ever.

Why the hell did he agree to do perform if he didn't know the lyrics, then?
To make a point?
To sound badass?
If so hes failed on both counts.

The albums only 50 minutes..this guy talkin about I aint heard all of it. It aint Titanic, nigga. It aint a Harry Potter book, nigga. As an artist, I'm sure you're on planes a lot. During one of those flights, pop that bitch in. Not too hard.

Plus as much as you say you don't care, you bring up the incident in all of your posts, making it seem like you care a lot more than you're putting on.

P.S. I don't believe the 3 album thing. Any artist that really loves their craft, can't leave the game for too long. Too Short and Jigga said they were retiring too.

P.P.S. Stop selling drugs, nigga. lol

i never heard the shit either, i have heard a ATCQ greatest hits CD tho (i assume alot of MM was on it)
and the shit sounded dated as fuck
i think if u listen to it now, u gon be wondering why everybody is hype about the album
if u weren't there in the moment to hear it then fuck it dawg
that shit sound dated, the lyrics are wack and the production is aight but dated as well
u gotta realize that most the niggas on this site be trying fit in with each other , so if niggas say o MM is classic this or classic that
u gon have 18 yr old white bols on here running to walmart in iowa or where ever they live to cop and become an expert on the shit
for example see how quickly everybody on this site became experts on MF doom, Slum village....and even you
when previously NOBODY was talking bout that shit
FOH

it seems like u achieved your dreams without giving two shits about ATCQ so what do you owe them or yourself for checking that shit out now, all in the past tense
fuck that. the shit u DID listen to developed u and if u sastified wit that, then u cool
fuck when u think about it Q tip is more well known for vibrate thing then MM anyway
what does that tell u?
fuck that shit homes

straight up

how much are these cats lives really lacking that their feelings are hurt cause Lu hasnt heard that album lol

its funny but sad in a sense that they are obsessing like this lol

im a dirty south brotha born in 84

i came up on gangsta as well and when I chose to seek out the qoute on qoute real shit

I never picked up any ATCQ either

maybe I will one day, I got nothing against them, especially if they did influence some of my favorite rappers, Outkast and Blackstar. but something in me has to motivate me to listen to an artist, not the urge to fit in or the desire to be deemed credible in the eyes of internet message boarders.

keep doin you Lu

and the guys in the post talkin shit will most likely continue doing them (talkin shit about everything that doesnt fit their mold or favorite style of hiphop)

forget these lames and their standardized test to be Emcees lol

and a good Emcee you definetly are homie

most n*ggas didn't believe you in the first place

sure you got your Stan ass n*ggas co-signing your every word, but they are few of them, and that group is getting smaller and smaller by the day on okp, by the way you keep burying yourself like this.

word of advice, be yourself and stop copping pleas. don't even post here anymore. if not, you'll keep ruining what little credibility you had to begin with.

who cares what the f*ck you listen to, who cares what the f*ck you like? obviously its a big deal to you to make sure people know. what part of the game is that, fam? that ain't real, homie. stop the lies, stop the facade. you need more people.

And if you forget your own lines during shows, maybe that's something to work on. Get the live show on lock.

so i'll just suffice to say there's no way you should've (could've?) missed the boat like you did

i guess you're just unaware, but MM *defined* a generation. I'm talking east, west, midwest, south, anyone who was age 13-18 and into hip-hop when that dropped was messing with it.

What's even crazier is that was their third album, there's really no reason niggas shouldnt have been on board after:

I left my wallet in el segundo
bonita applebaum
can i kick it
buddy remix (that video was everywhere and the song was on the radio)
Check The Rhime
Jazz (We Got)/Buggin Out (the video had both songs)
Scenario
Scenario Remix

(This also probably means you're not familiar with De La Soul's catalogue and "dont care to be". smh, your loss.)

36 Chambers came out the same day, Doggystyle came out 2 weeks later and it's Marauders that everyone is still crazy about.

like ?uestlove said, Tribe made it possible for Lupe Fiasco to have a career making left of center music.

So yeah, you come off a tad poser-ish with the "bad guy turned good who never listened to tribe and is now skating to save the world" image.

We're supposed to feel bad/jealous because you're shooting a video with Hype Williams?
"Boo, you know how many Puff meet with no panties?"

i'll stop because im almost being a jerk here

but yeah, *we're* your core audience (the type of people who post here), so marinate on that before you come through here stunting like that

who outside of this site and a few backpackers ranks MM over 36 chambers and doggystyle?
the fact that Lupe , me and alot of other ppl NEVER EVEN HEARD the album proves u wrong
who back then wasn't listening to 36 chambers or doggystyle?
u had "heads" and niggas on the corner blasting both those albums
shit even my DAD was rocking doggystyle in his old school continental for months
shit i had to just use wikipedia to even know what songs were on MM
world tour was aight for the chorus
and electric relaxation is best known for being the theme beat for the Wayans brothers show
just stop it
matter fact if u my age u prolly were in like 3rd-5th grade when that came out, so STOP LYING like u was rocking that shit back then fam
considering that to be true lol @ u naming OLDER tribe songs like u were already an estblished fam by the time MM came out
what were u in kindergarten/1st grade bobbing ur head to tribe?
FOH
i had to trick my parents into buying me 36 chambers and doggystyle
and nobody i knew was rocking MM back then and it wasn't getting much radio play if i remember correctly
i do remember world tour getting spins on rap city tho
but thats about it

>who outside of this site and a few backpackers ranks MM over

diehard wu heads would rank their debut over marauders, that's about it. my assertion is fair and balanced, you dont see me talking about "Beats Rhymes & Life was better than Only Built 4 Cuban Linx"

>the fact that Lupe , me and alot of other ppl NEVER EVEN HEARD
>the album proves u wrong

lupe is on some other shit
you *stay* going left field on here just because

>who back then wasn't listening to 36 chambers or doggystyle?
>u had "heads" and niggas on the corner blasting both those
>albums

people were bumping all 3.

>world tour was aight for the chorus

lolz

>and electric relaxation is best known for being the theme beat
>for the Wayans brothers show

LOLz, you know how many women go crazy over that song? i guess not. I saw them perform a year ago and trust me, the crowd wasnt going crazy because that was the wayans brothers song. Plus the show only had the song for season 1 (maybe season 2). The creators of the show chose to use that song because it was one of the illest joints out at the time, not because they were noodles. you're a funny dude.

>just stop it
>matter fact if u my age u prolly were in like 3rd-5th grade
>when that came out, so STOP LYING like u was rocking that shit
>back then fam

8th grade. my man bought the tape and made me a dub

>considering that to be true lol @ u naming OLDER tribe songs
>like u were already an estblished fam by the time MM came out

lolz, we had videos (Video Music Box/Rap City with the mayor Chris Thomas/Yo MTV Raps)

>what were u in kindergarten/1st grade bobbing ur head to
>tribe?

nah roxanne shante & the fat boys

my childhood was Kool DJ Red Alert every Friday and Saturday night though

>and nobody i knew was rocking MM back then and it wasn't
>getting much radio play if i remember correctly

lolz, im sure "Electric Relaxation" got as much radio spin as "Method Man"

Man listen, I went to sleep away camp at age 12 and met this kid from South Carolina who was the biggest Black Sheep fan in the world, he was my age rocking Das Efx's "Dead Serious", we would talk about the Scenario Remix and Pete Rock & CL Smooth

My final few points:
On the MTV show where people could meet and interview their favorite artists, a white kid who was around my age chose Tribe.

and while you havent heard it, there's an intro on J-Live's "The Best Part" where young kids are talking about Big Daddy Kane

i say all of this to say, I (we) grew up in the best time period for Hip-Hop music and some of us were lucky enough to be deep into it

see i was alive back then
black
and in the hood
granted i was in philly and not nyc
but i seriously doubt it was a BIG difference between the two locations
to say that MM was as popular or getting as much spin as 36 chambers or doggystyle is pure revisitionist history
MM came out in 93 , avg. 8th grader is 13 if i'm correct
so u were born in 80?
u 26/27?
i thought u were like 22-23
even IF u were in 8th grade then i seriously doubt the avg. 8th grader was listening to tribe after the popularity of the chronic followed up by doggystyle
and even if u try to say niggas in nyc wasn't fucking wit west coast rap .....i'd think most niggas in nyc were on that wu/onyx tip by that point
as far as u witnessing women go crazy over electric relaxation, lol
let me guess. this was at the dilla tribute, foh
we know what kinda parties u go to fam
ain't no women going crazy over that shit
and show we how those two tribe records were BIG
cause i don't remember
but then again u the same dude that tried to act like reasonable doubt was big in it's day
stop stanning

i'm still shaking my head at u trying act like the avg. rap fan would rank MM over doggystyle or 36 chambers
OOO
nigga we both in philly we can easily take a sample
just spend a hour walking in barbershops or in the hood asking niggas how they rank them albums
and i bet HALF the niggas wouldnt even know what MM was
and it def. would come in 3rd

that's what you said. clearly there were easily a thousand women in that venue that disagree with you and prove this notion wrong by, well, going crazy over 'electric relaxation'. if you were correct, they would have been silent when electric relaxation came on and looked bored until they heard tip do 'vivrant thing'.

got it, captain wrong?

dude is trippin saying tribe didnt matter...Im from LA so of course everyone was banging doggystyle, but after that most people had tribe...people forget that Low end theory sold between 1 and 1.5 million copies WHEN it came out, and Midnight Marauders sold 1.3 mil...by contrast Enter the 36 chambers didnt even go gold till years later...bottom line tribe was a real popular group in 93' 94' and Actually Tribe was the most mainstream out of all the native tongues cats...

...About Lupe forgetting the lyrics to electric relaxation--- WHO CARES!!

Rappers forget their own lyrics ALL the time...and its been a lot of cats on the hip hop honors shows that didnt know the words to the Honoree's songs they were performing too so dont just single out Lupe...Do You pimpin, and its perfectly understandable for some1 to grow up on Spice1 Nwa etc and comeout rapping like u do...

people nowadays think "underground" or "backpack" is a genre of rap now...And when I was growing up, Underground just meant you werent getting mainstream radioplay...so called Underground mixshows is where I first heard everything from early biggie and Nas, to UGK's Pocketful of stones and Scarface's the diary, to ras kass, Freestyle fellowship and souls of mischief...and ALL these artists and albums shaped how I rhyme today...

Fans need to stop assuming what the person behind the artist is like, because you will keep disapponting yourselves when you find out your so-called heroes dont listen to the same shit as u...

I thought you were only like two or three years younger than me (I'm 31).

You're making me feel old with this 3rd-grade-when-Maruaders-dropped shit.

Anyway-in terms of listening for me in 1993 in high school in South Jerz it went Doggystyle in first by a mile (I never had a car but that album was in every one I got into) and second Marauders (which I bought when it came out but didn't think it was as good as Low End Theory and still don't).

I didn't really get deep into the Wu until 1994 when Meth and Dirt were getting ready to drop solos......I had heard a couple of the singles and read the Source cover issue but I was just caught up in other shit at the time. They eventually went on to be my favorite rap group of all-time but in 1993 I was still holding out hope that PE wasn't done.

As for Lupe, to me he comes off as corny with these posts as he sounds on that 'Kick Push' song. And I've been here too long to check for him based off Lesson hype, so it's whatever.

I do think it's funny that after making multiple posts about it....the dude ends up doing a Tribe tribute performance, bungling the words and then ends up making this mad post.

I ain't gonna knock the dude in terms of real life, dude is able to support himself rapping for a living which is at least respectbale to some degree. But as far as this little corner of the internet goes? 100% Herb Status.

mayne...wu didnt even go GOLD back then...and that was industry standard...tribe went PLATINUM with MM...when platinum wasnt easy to reach...plus how the hell do u have any idea what your "hood" was bumping when u was only 8 years old...NIGGA PLEASE!!

Award tour was BIG when it came out at the end of 93' and Electric relaxation carried that momentum into the summer when they dropped oh my god and rode that album till the end of 94'

man its so funny how twisted peoples perceptions are of history on here...

...and that still doesnt mean Lupe should be crucified for not hearing it...

>WU were HUGE on the east coast
>stop the revisionist history

what are you talking about? Does any of that apply to what I typed?

I asked how old you were, mentioned that I personally wasn't that big on the Wu until '94 and that in 1993 I was way more into Doggystyle than either of them.

I bought Tribe when it came out because I already had been listening to them for four years. The Wu were a whole new thing that I hadn't fully absorbed yet.

>either one of those singles were WAY bigger then anything on
>MM
>as far as popularity AND radio spins

like I said, I'd heard the Wu singles a bit (Yo!MTV Raps gave them a good amount of play but the only good rap they played in regular programming time was Snoop and Pac) but it's not like anything off either album was a true 'hit' in the traditional sense.

And I don't know what radio you're talking in Philly about unless it was college radio. Power 99 wasn't really playing any Wu in '93 or much decent hip-hop at all outside of occaisonally late-night mix shows.

In terms of chart success I'd say if anything the Tribe singles were bigger but Wu-Tang was more of a movement that had become unstoppable by the time I was leaving for my first year of college in the fall of '94. By the time Tical was dropping a month or two later I was fully on board.

>u ain't the authority on shit

your memories from fourth-grade in North or West Philly (can''t remember which) ain't law either. The difference between the two is: a) I was old enough to drive, & b) I'm not claiming my experience to be representative of anything but my own personal one.

And again, Philly radio was not playing Wu-Tang Clan in 1993.....no matter what you want to try to say.

Cosmic Kev used to spin Wu all the time. I don't know what station you were listening too B. "Method Man" and "C.R.E.A.M." held down the number one spot on the 9 at 9 for awhile. Don't know how you missed that shit. Power 99 is the station that I first heard "I Used To Love H.E.R." on. You must not listened to the station after 10pm or something when they started quiet storming it.

were "Scenario" & "Electric Relaxation" ...If anything Low End Theory was probably there biggest album in Philly. I agree with your assessment that Wu probably got more play on the station at the time MM dropped but Tribe had a bigger and already established fan base in Philly that were checking for them just off spec.

Low End Theory album is still their biggest and best album to me. I didn't even know people viewed Marauders as being an indisputed classic or compared it favorably with Low End Theory until shortly after getting here in '99.

And I don't remember hearing Tribe on Power much at all either in the year in question, maybe "Electric Relaxation" in mixshows at night.

I remember hearing the singles occaisonally as I mentioned but not during prime radio hours (basically the morning before school or during the drive-time afternoon/evening hours).

I don't really remember 'C.R.E.A.M.' blowing up as a single until '94 and about halfway through that year I was no longer in a Philly radio area so I can't speak on it.

Tribe was an established act so that album was one I personally checked for first, since I had pretty much been listening to them along with the Jungle Brothers & De La since the end of the eighties.

And Doggystyle, that album was just a monster.

I was talking in general about the airplay of the two albums and the singles from Enter The 36 Chambers got more airplay than MM did on 99. And 99 didn't really play Hip-Hop during the daytime hours. You'd have to listen from 6-10pm in order to really hear them spin Hip-Hop. So yeah...if you weren't listening then you probably did miss hearing all that stuff.

hands down but Wu ain't hit that hard outside of the northeast until later. i know you're in Philly so maybe Wu was larger than Tribe at the time but in Atlanta they ain't hit hard until the "Can It Be All So Simple" video dropped. MM was definitely gettin' more play than Wu down this way. On the real, most niggas down this way don't even fuck wit Wu like that.

Now Playing:
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

I don't know why everyone is so hype about this. Only the "OKP Community" knows that Lupe never heard the album. Most people watching on tv or viewing the awards in person will not care.

Good premiere lp Lupe. Looking forward to the next.

I thought F&L was a great album, and consider myself to be a fan of your music, but does that mean I should act as if there is nothing wrong with you not caring about Tribe's legacy and yet performing at an event designed to celebrate it? That seems to be what a lot of other people in this thread are doing.

Don't discredit the Tribe legacy with the fact you had a bad performance. That's poor form.

But I'm from his part of the country so I completely understand.

When I moved to East Coast and would go to parties in Philly and New York and the DJ would play all these song I had never heard off in my life. I would be standing there like..."Ya'll niggas dance to this? What is this? Tell that nigga to put quit playing and put on some Ying Yang Twins"

Of course if you come out and say you aint heard emcee such and such, your credibility gets challenged. Which is why so many kats on here and people in general rush to go make sure they have the Hip Hop Checklist of Albums that prove you are down. Now your opinion is valid cuz you can pull out your copy of Black Moon and say "Here it is!! I HAVE IT!! I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!

I aint seen Krush Groove.
I aint seen Beat Street
I aint seen Breakin
I aint got no Slick Rick
I aint got no Jungle Brothers

That stuff was IRRELEVANT where I grew up at.

And truthfully, I have no sympthy when kats can come on here and rip E-40 to shreads, never having heard "In A Major Way" or "The Mailman" and don't care to. But then wanna police which album you have to have heard. Last time I checked, Too Short and NWA were massively more influential and impactful than Tribe and its not really close. Thats what dude grew up listening to.

That stuff was relevant as fuck, because for most, movies like Krush Groove and Beat Street were their first interactions with hip-hop...just like Colors spread LA gang culture across the world.

You may not have fucked with it, but I guarantee some people in your area did, or there wouldn't be hip hop there.

I grew up and live right up the road from the Chi, and I got plenny friends from there, and I know these things existed there and people fucked with em.

But I also know how South and West Coast heavy the Midwest is, so I know where you're coming from there too.

>Last time I checked, Too Short and NWA were massively more >influential and impactful than Tribe and its not really close. >Thats what dude grew up listening to.

Iono when and where you checked, but that's blatantly false...Tribe's tree is equal to or bigger than Too Short and NWA's trees. From Tribe you got Busta, The Roots, Nas, Mobb Deep, Mos, Dilla, Little Brother, 'Ye, Pharrell, etc...all kinds of groups and artists that Tribe fucked with directly or were influenced by them.

all you had to say was "I fucked up. My bad." I don't understand why you needed the rest. You performed badly, it has little to do with growing up on Tribe. If anyone else, other than Tribe, had messed up while they were performing that song they would have been criticized too. Shit happens. Keep it moving.

That's understandable.

I didn't get into hip hop at all until 2002 (I'm 24).

But that doesn't mean that I didn't go back and check out earlier stuff just so I could have a better understanding of Hip Hop as a historical art form.

To ME it looks like you're not listening to all of MM because we want you to, and that's where all this arguing back and forth comes from.

Like all the stars are alligned for you to listen (Quest hooked you up with a copy, you know at least know what MM is, you probably have a small amount of free time considering your busy schedule) and you still don't check it out?

People on here (well some of them, some of them just like to argue with a celebrity) genuinely want you to be aware of great music but it seems like you keep trying to put a square toy in a round hole in terms of not checking it out, and then publicly saying you arent checking it out...

Had it been me, I would have not addressed the issue on here once I saw that it pissed people off, but maybe that's why I'm not famous, some comprises aren't worth it I guess...

the WCS song with spice and redman on it, spice gets busy. i like eiht's voice a lot, but i always dug the styles spice 1 flips. also, spice 1's cameo on 'genocide & juice' was dope as well. santa rita weekend is the song title.

spice is pretty underrated, if rated at all.

I'm a huge Tribe Fan and i think Lupe just didn't/doesn't realize the magnitude of love/devotion folks have for tribe. And it now seems as if its like a personal boycott, to note pump MM. But i'm not upset or outraged that Lupe got a spot in the tribute.

Would I have liked Pusha T who has repped Tribe in plenty interviews, for sure. But Lupe has his lane and he's a branch of the Tribe tree although once removed.

I'm just saying he had to know the backlash was coming and although i don't feel like he had to say shit, you gotta respect his cojones.

...like he thinks its cute and funny to make fun of the fact that he aint too interested in hearing Midnight Maruders.

These n*ggas paved the way for him, and for him to make light and have blatant disregard for the pioneers of the game, that paved the way for his black ass, is trifling to say the least.

it just goes to show, the n*gga aint got no foundation.

all he had to say is that he aint heard midnigh maruders, it just not his cup of tea. even though that might sound strange, folks would accept it. but it was the manner in which he said it and carried it like that album and them was insignificant...like he got better things to do...thats what made the Lupe believers into non-believers....and made Lupe look like a clown he more than likely is. He is dissing the main reason for his existence in the rap game, on a site (okayplayer) where most of his small fanbase is. A fanbase that also reveres that album, the music, and the genre Lupe has barely thrived in.

you don't sh*t where you eat.

Lupe forgot that princple, because he was so gassed on all the "love" he got from okp. He was feeling himself too much, and slipped up. And now n*ggas are starting to see him for who he is and what he is not.

i was alluding to a recent article where Pusha T reps tribe hard. And i think you are on point about how Lupe seem to revel in his ignorance.

And the whole "i grew up on gangsta rap" is kinda hilarious to me. Just because when MM came out, nobody paid attention to categories. You pumped the Snoop album and Midnight Marauders. I'm a lil older but we just played what was hot where i'm from.

but i'm not even hating, he just seems to be playing this on some hyper hubris shit.

Pusha T understands you give respect where respect is due. And really, Pusha T's style is different from Tribe's. Yet, he still gives it up.

since Andre and Lil' Wayne aren't on here beating their chests about how they don't listen to this or that.

Dude is on no less than five threads he created himself on this matter. And then he played himself on a major awards show by performing and not knowing the words.

C'mon, that's funny. I personally couldn't care less who this dude listens to.......but this 'saga' that he keeps feeding himself into is pretty amusing to me and makes him look like a clown.

I wouldn't say he beats his chest about anything around here. Saying he hasn't listened to an album and doesn't have a desire to listen to it, is far from beating his chest.

From my recollection, Lupe mentioned this in one thread which consequently blew the fuck up and spawned numerous other threads. This one is a response to a thread that came up yesterday. Lupe hasn't come around just to shout out the fact that he hasn't listened to this album. (Ok once, but that was just a thread title that would get people to read it).

I don't think Lupe looks like a clown, I think all these cats with their panties in bunches look like clowns for caring so much about what albums a grown man has and hasn't listened to.

I think it makes sense. If Black Though mentioned in a thread that he's never made it past track 2 on "Straight Outta Compton" people on here would turn their back on him quicker than it takes an ice cube to melt in the Sahara, despite the fact that he's turned out quality music for years now. i mean for someone that doesnt know the words to a classic and yall wildin out about it right now, he still made a better album than a lot of the emcees that know Tribe records forwards and backwards..i dont get why you even care, its not his music directly influenced by Tribe or anyone like that (and he admits who he grew up on) nor does it reflect it, so why do you expect him to know everything about Tribe just because YOU do...and yall are going on with this "you're fake lupe, you're a poser" word?..because being in the pigeonhole of "real hiphop" genre is where the money is at? lol nah. its not. so why would he fake to be in that category? certainly wasn't for the money and last time i checked u cant buy things with a currency called "respect" lol. losers.

stop with the convincing him to listen to the album lol i agree great album. amazing even. but is it gonna make or break your day if he listens to the album, yall stressing it like its a life decision ON YOUR PART lol calm down. music is great. but its not that serious.

Common said his damn self he was influenced by Too Short CUZ that's what niggaz in Chicago listened to.

I mean most of the niggaz in this thread are NY-centric (or act like they from NY) but really need to realize that in cities like Chicago, St Louis, Gary, Milwaukke, 'Nap THE MASSES were listening to hood shit

With that being said, Lupe is just flexin that new young nigga mentality, iono if he even realizes that everything he's tryna do, Com's already done (as far as tryna play both sides across the middle, being conscious and still reppin the hood)

...I don't hear it. At all. I would never think of comparing Lupe to the Geto Boys. And Willie D? They sound nothing alike, rap nothing alike...I don't hear it at all.

I do think that Lupe doesn't sound like Tribe either, but saying Lupe sounds like The Geto Boys is absurd to me. I hear more Jay (flow-wise) in Lupe than anything. I don't hear an ounce of Spice 1 in his flow.

But that ghetto, but still intelligent, fun and ecclectic type shit Lupe likes to be on was pioneered by cats like Com, Tribe, De La, etc.

He's way more Stakes Is High/Midnight Maruders than he is any of the shit he name-checked hismelf growing up on....which is why its so odd that he would buck that shit. I hear no NWA, Spice-1 or Eightball and MJG in his style...

The people who fuck with him the hardest fuck with him because he reminds them of those people, most of the mainstream crowd he's tryna look cool for prolly just thinks he's a herb.

...so all this talk about "sensitivity" is odd to me. I am not offended that Lupe hasn't heard one of my favourite albums. Instead, the real issue here, in my opinion, is that dude is activley choosing not to listen to it.

I'd dare say that if it wasn't for the likes of Tribe, there would be much less, if any demand for artists like Lupe Fiasco in 2007. For him to act like it's not worthwhile to listen to Midnight Marauders is shitty in my opinion.

old school R&B, even tho hip-hop is built upon samples from old school R&B records.

There are people who refuse to listen to anything mainstream nowadays.

Who cares? We're all like different things.

If Lupe doesn't want to listen to Tribe that's on him.

this guy is taking pride in not having taken 45 minutes to listen to one of the best albums in the same genre he works in. that's like a filmmaker boasting about not having seen "citizen kane" because they watched "the neverending story" when they were a kid. that said, this whole thing is about lupe's concern that people will associate him with the "soft" native tongues aesthetic -- thus his proclamations of loving gangster shit and willful avoidance of a universally-acclaimed album made by someone he considers a friend.

yep...

all these "conscious" mc's all wanna claim to be different and enlightened yet they run from that title any chance they get and namedrop snoop or dre to try and catch some sales. another lost nigga in the industry, but not surprising. even funnier considering he manages to make the most gayest and dungeon & dragon-ish music videos i've ever seen.

keep dissing tribe and reppin eightball and mjg, just know that nobody is gonna be buying your album because of that statement so it's only to your detriment. just hope your dickriders on here buy your shit or else your gonna be doing your gay little hand gestures in $50 videos on koch next year.

not really, i don't care if they do or not. lupe should care though since half of his fanbase resides on this board...

and you need to stop fuckin around and hook me up with an version of "ringman" that doesn't switch to a gay ass reggaetone-esque beat halfway through.

maybe but it doesn't matter dude will be on koch soon enough.

>wow, all i had to do is challenge someones opinion to get

you challenging me really doesn't matter, if i woulda saw your avy and sig before i woulda have told you about that "ringman" cut earlier. i been playing that mega ran lp the last couple weeks and there's 3 cuts i really like but i'm pissed that "ringman" is dope as fuck for like a minute and change, then the beat switches and it all goes downhill. hook me up with a version without the beat change.

>FYI: 2 consecutive posts, you've used the word 'gay' to

and your point is? gay is pretty much an all-purpose insult in my vocabulary. it has very little to do with actual homosexuality, just another way to call someone/something wack.

>I'll be back.

hopefully with that full version of "ringman" minus the wack beat change.
