So at my kids school they are having a diversity day. I went last year and they have all these classrooms decked out in different themes from all over the world. Their is like a japanese culture room. New Orleans Creole Culture. Irish Folk Music room.
It wasn't what I had in mind when I went to the first diversity group meeting but whatever.
Anyway I wasn't even planning on taking the boys this year and one of the black parents asked us to help with this years diversity day by taking a shift at the African Drums room and watch the kids and help them bang on drums.
I can't. I don't like reducing the diversity initiative to a halloween-like round robin of exotic cultures and I don't know shit about drumming here or in Africa.
I'd had been offended if a white person had asked me to do it.
Am I wrong though?
