"QB Agenda Wars 2022"

so I see a lot of reckless talk every Sunday, so we need to know where you all stand if you're going to claim someone in the future

we're excluding Brady, Rodgers, Stafford and Ryan -- their careers are wrapped up, more or less

if you want to get loud and say Mahomes, Jackson or Allen suck, go ahead, but they have separated themselves in their trajectories already

this is about the late-stage guys who could change their legacy, the looking washed guys who may or may not bounce back, the semi-successful guys who could go either way, and the unproven guys

when Denver figures this out. Even Rodgers, Hackett and LaFleuer(sp?) were shaky, in the beginning. That connection with Jeudy is coming, you can see it. Denver receivers still dropping hella passes. That last drive, a dude leaked out for what would have been like a 20 yard catch…butt-naked, wide open and the ball hit him in both palms..dropped it. Look, his best years are definitely behind him, but no way I’m accepting he’s washed.

Saw it yesterday in the Raiders game after Javonte went out. He was tucking it way more than he has so far this season

I think he's reluctant to do so because of his age. But he's starting to realize that part of his game will need to at least be a factor

as you said the receivers dropping hella passes. I see the connection with Sutton and Jeudy growing each game though

I'm right around here. It is totally okay if the truth is in the middle with Russ. He's not the king shit best QB in the league. Probably never was. He's not young or the most athletic.

But washed? Nope. Not at all. MATT MOTHERFUCKING RYAN IS WASHED. Russ is just struggling with a coach who might not be it, being in a new spot, and maybe even some Kevin Love ass skill players who might not be ready for regular prime time showings and pressure on them to perform just yet. Being on the afternoon slate is an easier life than this primetime 4 of the first 5 weeks shit.

I'm Jessie Spano every time I see him play but I'm glad to see him going more into 'fuck it, let's make a play' mode.

2022 and 2023 first-round picks,
2022 and 2023 second-round picks
and a 2022 fifth-round pick.

only contract worse than that in Denver is the deal the nuggets gave to Michael Porter Jr

That "let Russ cook" thing was always hilarious. They didnt let him cook because he cant cook. Broncos just doomed their franchise for the next seven years and possibly longer. Gave up all that money and draft stock for a washed QB

Thats why DK Metcalf got frustrated and pissed off and why Russ clashed with Pete Carrol. Russ can only play QB through improv and that shit doesnt work in the red zone or without an all world defense to bail you out.

not saying he's an immobile turd, but he's not how he used to be when he was a young man and these pass rushers just keep getting faster, more agile, etc.

He’s got a sharp offensive coach now and he’s surrounded by loads of weapons

But the O-line has to be playing well, Jefferson has to be WIDE open, and the defense has to be doing their part…and then MAYBE you’ll get 250+ and 2TDs from him

He can drive a formula 1 car that’s souped to the tits if no one else is on the track, but he couldn’t win a Nascar last-lap three wide sprint at Talladega to save his life. No creativity, no improvisation, no grit. But admittedly he is still better than at least 2/3 of the league.

Played over his head early on. Adult. Company guy.

You CAN win with him, but you have to keep his salary around the 10th highest paid QB. For all of the cries about his contract. He's damn near there now. If not, its close.

At worst, he's a bigger, slightly more athletic Kirk Cousins. I don't love that sometimes it seems like he won't just LET IT FUCKING RIP. But hey, that's the Kirk in him. Plus we all know how Black QBs are probably told to their faces that they can't show up with a Jameis amount of picks and still be in town.

Also, people are acting like the Cowboys should be expecting to win when their shit hasn't been tight for real since Jimmy was there. And even that eva took a crazy trade, some excellently fortunate drafting, no cap/wild money getting thrown around for hired guns, and some other miracles.

Closer to an "Aikman" type with a Cowboys team that is nowhere near elite outside of him like his teams were.

Romo was the Cowboys' generational talent that was lost to injury, his own blunders, and front office follies. 3rd stringer that could have been their (HOF version of) Favre.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Either he’s regressed worse than any quarterback ever or Pederson protected him more than we’ll ever understand

I’ve never seen a QB with his arm strength and build look so skittish and give the ball up so easily

He’s some grotesque combination of Jeff George, Old Ben Roethlisberger, and Kurt Warner (Warner markedly better, just comparable cause Wentz is also a Jesus freak)

when he returns with that O=Line and running game, Cleveland should be a playoff team at least.

The arm talent, pocket presence and vision are elite from what I've seen.

where the 2 best QBs currently in the NFL currently reside (and several other contenders in the league also do, including 2 in his division).

But I think he'll reclaim his spot as the best QB not named Mahomes and Allen.

Jacoby Brissett has demonstrated that you don't have to do much to put up points in the Cleveland offense (bar the NE game they have not scored less than 20 all season). I don't think Deshaun ever had that in Houston.

Don't think he's near washed, even with essentially 2 seasons out (not like he was actually injured).

The expectations are higher (and the pressure will be greater, even if self-inflicted)

but he's gonna be great. Looking forward to it.

Mine.

Worst group of WR’s in the history of the forward pass, and a horrible line other than Thomas. He is accurate, mobile, and is throwing darts and making good decisions.

Give him somebody to throw to and the passing stats will reflect that. He and Barkley are flat out carrying the team to wins.

Occasionally clueless. He still appears to be on some 'seeing half of the field shit'. Little ass vision cone in this mfer.

He's been surrounded in chaos and tomfoolery and will probably get another chance. And he'll be bad there too.

Russ got some smaller dudes drafted early.

I don't think we're ever going to know for real on Tua. Too many agendas are lined up for him to fail, he now is the mascot for head injuries, and Miami is...well...Miami.

Baker:

Tua is better than Baker (deep ball, decision-making, it looks like the whole team doesn't actively hate him, that shit) and I don't know if Baker is truly as terrible as he looks right now. I can buy the idea that Baker was never physically special but now he's physically cooked and he lacks the other stuff to save him. So now he's just a physically unfit dude out there catching hell.

He has warts..mostly young dude stuff. Holding the ball, occasionally getting too excited and missing a throw, golden arm syndrome picks, all of that. Even if he stays healthy, he's probably about to get at least one somebody fired.

I hate that he's a subject of bigtime agenda wars.

I hope he doesn't end up another what-if guy who could never get the right shit around him. Imagine him in an easy offense to run like with the Niners!? THAT would be fun.

Not comparing him to Brady or Kobe, but just the way people talk about him. Apparently his grind is legendary. Consistently hearing from people at every level that he’s a first in/last out type, doesn’t take reps off, lifts heavy even during the season. I think he’s proving that overachievers often achieve greatly. He’s a hell of a story and will end the season with several MVP votes at this pace.

I'm in the can for him bigtime. I want him to succeed. He's getting better at the stuff he was bad at. I love that shit. He puts his body on the line to try to fill in his gaps. Everyone can dig that up to a point!

His teams seems to love the shit out of him. That's my favorite thing to see. And my least favorite thing to see missing. Philly is going to be a tough out if they stay healthy. And they could mess around and be in the mix for a few years until he gets paid and the team around him fades (if that's still the way the NFL cap works by then).

Seems like everyone kinda forgot about him amid all the shenanigans last year and now he’s getting comfortable. For now, I think he’s benefitting from being in a market with little pressure, but I don’t see him staying in Jacksonville.

Honestly mostly buying cause he has kind of an Elway look to him. I’m surprised the dude is not from Cali.

I like that he's probably going to be at least 'fine' by general definition...as long as he is given time. The key for him is to not Baker himself in the building.

And I wouldn't think the Jags would self-destruct due to high expectations. Their team has a lot of misfits who have bumped around the league, so the room should have SOME realness in it to help stop people from being too Hollywood.

AND now he's seen what a shitshow looks like with Urb on-hand, so that might help him too.

not much talent on that side of the ball and unproven coaching. but he should be showing more -- they are scared for him to pass.

I think he's somewhere in-between the awfulness he is at right now and the talent he showed in college.

Stroud gets away with the same stuff; beautiful passes but how often is he challenged or has to pick between tough options?

you mentioned Haskins and the few games that defenses moved him off his spot (Purdue loss) he struggled tremendously...well, the NFL is all about being uncomfortable and how you manage it.

He holds onto the ball too long. That being said I do think the Bears finally stumbled onto using his legs more. I don't know why coaches are so hesitant to adjust their systems to the QB versus the adjusting the QB to the system.

The same can be said for Daniel Jones. They don't utilize his running ability enough.

have FUCKING MATT PATRICIA as an OFFENSIVE coordinator

that's one of the wildest staff decisions since the Eagles moved Juan Castillo (the offensive line coach) to the DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR years ago.

(to Juan's credit he did "cook the shit out of those chitlins" on one occasion - poetx)

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

there's a bunch of stud Alabama wideouts who all rave about Mac.

And when the Niners moved up to 3 to take a QB apparently Kyle Shanahan wanted Mac but was outvoted internally and they went with Lance, who Kyle also liked but just viewed as much more of a project and in turn an impediment to immediate success with their currently loaded roster (hence their clumsiness handling the position this offseason). Isn't it wild to think the team moved up to 3 not even knowing which guy they were going for?!?

I dunno. I haven't seen it with Mac Jones, but guys like Waddle and Jameson Williams love Mac and Kyle Shanahan loved Mac too. Those guys know ball.

I think Mac is just in a terrible environment for a young highly touted offensive player who's trying to blossom. BB is a dick who wants to run the ball, control time of possession, and tackle well.

I’m still a Jameis apologist despite being on saints

I think he can still be a good qb.

Will he win a chip? No.

But there’s no reason he can’t have a career like Phil rivers.

On the other hand, he still has 4th quarters like he did v Tampa a few weeks ago. Glad to be on the other end of that for once

In response to Reply # 53

Physically he's gifted and like Rivers he seems to be a great leader.

But he almost seems cursed. Like in Tampa the coaches lost faith in him. And in NO, he's been injured too much. NO seemed to be the perfect landing spot, since he got a chance to apprentice under Drew and be coached up by a real QB-whisperer.

It just hasn't happened yet and I'm losing hope it ever will come together for him.

For all of his 'quirks,' his teammates seem to like him. I think if he ever gets to play again in long stretches, he could grow into a top 12-15 QB.

Rivers, at least to me, was really shaky for like half a decade and I felt like only me and a couple of my buddies could see it. Kinda like in a Matt Ryan way...dude was winning people fantasy titles and fucking off real life games with ridiculously bad decisions, absurd fumbles, bad line of scrimmage shit, all of that.

Crab Legs is like a bad mix of Favre and Rivers. And he's not going to get 15 years to start so that he can have like 8 good stats seasons. AND now he's seemingly breaking down physically.

he screwed up so bad Sunday, coach Smith ran almost 14 run plays in a row, and when we get in the red zone, this dude fumbled again (6th of the season) and had to throw the ball away and we had to settle for 3. Smith completely took the ball out his hands and ran like 12 more times straight

I’m legit impressed and perplexed by the newfound confidence. They switched things up for the NE game and he hasn’t looked back since

People were out on Darnell Mooney too early too. He’s a legit WR1 with this version of fields

Funny enough, I made that post a year ago after watching him vs my Manders on Thursday night football. A year later I just watched him again against my Manders on Thursday night football and I don't feel any better about Justin Fields. DJ Moore is a talent and was wide open all night because Washington secondary is abysmal.

this feels like the official changing of the guard year. Packers are gonna struggle to get a wild card all year and Brady seems off. Honestly I think the top 10 falls off a cliff after Hurts. THere's a lot of iffy QB play this year.

He’s avoiding mistakes and moving the chains.

Giants WRs are horrific, and the middle of the line gets destroyed on pass plays. Giants are working around that with the rollouts, bootlegs, and short passes to the TEs and RBs.

I suspect the numbers will look a lot better when there’s a pocket to step up into and a WR that can get open, catch, and do anything with it after the catch.

Some of you only pay attention to fantasy football points when it’s not your team, but I actually watch the Giants every week because it’s my team.

If he sucked, I’d want him gone.

He’s playing good and getting it done.

Above all else, Lombardi is a terrible OC.

Keenan Allen has only played in 2 games and didn’t finish those. Mike Williams is out.

In response to Reply # 124

I’m not saying it excuses poor on the field decisions by Herbert.

Lombardi isn’t very good and a bad hire. His previous OC experience consisted of half a season with the Lions and was fired mid season because his offense was so bad. The majority of his career he has been an assistant coach/QB coach with the Saints under Sean Payton.

Lombardi is/was a bad hire and isn’t maximizing the Chargers offensive talent.

for the next 2 seasons.

it's a clear sign they're moving on. i have mixed feelings about it. there's so much over his stay here that hasn't been on him, but it's probably better on both ends to move on.

wonder how Devante feels about all this though.

they've jumped the line to where I think the league wants to go (Full West Coast, fuck RBs, fuck defense on short passes)

they should pick up Kareem Hunt and get that line working. Check back in.

People are relegating him to Phillip Rivers status (Rivers was better than Eli but the Giants put a better team/system around Eli, who was horse piss in his last years. Meanwhile Rivers at least took the Colts to the playoffs before retiring)

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I lost faith in the OC Dorsey over the course of the season. offense not tight enough, too reliant on low percentage plays. Josh can make them at a higher clip than most but they neglected perfecting the easy underneath stuff. the chain movers. not a lot of creativity in play design. but also, yes, maybe josh spent too much time with his eyes deep, passing over easy underneath and mid-range. but it felt like they only practiced deep throws and so 3rd down it was hey josh make a crazy play running around or else throw the ball a million miles an hour to Diggs cuz he's who we can count on to separate.

and yea, there's a definite feeling of why run the ball and waste a down. josh's legs bailed them out of a ton of games this year. can't make a consistent O out of wild seat of his pants plays by the quarterback. all josh allen all the time...some of the basics have gone to shit.

don't want to plea cop like a chump for my boy, but watching thriving offenses in the league, i think we're behind on Xs and Os.

RBs, WRs besides Stef. A real top tier TE. And an O line. lot to do personnel wise. o line probably #1 this offseason.

josh has to change his approach but i think we need a new OC drawing it up

Curse of the outlier athlete, hasn't fully developed the finer points of winning qbing cuz his athleticism is so different. For now. Also not playing with a top offensive coach and shitty talent puts a cap on a qb's growth.

had no protection, held the ball way too long, locked his eyes on where he was going to throw. pretty good poise but reacted way too slowly to everything, didn't check down. once they were playing catch up, it was over. also, not fast or elusive enough to be a real running threat. not sure if it's a good comparison, but he reminded me of Tannehill some.

But he's short and nowhere near as fast as prime Russell Wilson. Nowhere near as fast as Mahomes. He can run a bit but I don't think you really have to worry much about it. Could be wrong, I saw one game.

And of course my standard for running qb is high...Josh Allen is a huge insane athlete

it really helps if you're quick. kyler murray moves like a waterbug.

guilty as charged about injecting josh allen into every discussion. he's the most entertaining football player i've ever watched and he happens to be my qb.

thing is, if Howell was 6'5 with his quickness, he'd be fine. the crazy thing about josh allen is how much distance he covers with every stride. watch that clip i linked of Floyd running Howell down from behind. a qb like...i don't know...josh allen is able to make far more separation with each step.

no argument, just some observations, take em or leave em

Sam Howell would be outstanding in , say , Pittsburgh or Atlanta ... places where the QB has talent around him but no swag to speak of whatsoever

Having watched Howell so closely I can say he's easily better than anything we've had here since Kirk Cousins. He can make some big time throws.

this past Sunday every sack he took was on him. He's gotta learn when to throw the ball away. I think he hits a glitch where he wants to make a play even when there isn't one there, and his run instinct is late to kick in from time to time.

Mahomes
Allen
Hurts
Lamar
Purdy

I can't put Brock ahead of Hurts

Also Lamar still Lamar out there making those throws. His receivers are just a bunch of stone hands for the most part

he keeping it in the road and making the plays thats there but it's not on his shoulders like these other guys. i need to see him put some games on his back when the defense aint getting it done and their incredible skill players are getting neutralized

Mahomes Burrow Tua Lamar Hurts

Mahomes - I'm tired of his jackass interceptions, but he acts a fool for like a month every season. And his WRs don't look like those dudes at all. But I trust him to figure it out and have KC all up in the mix like always.

Burrow - The man BE making throws and febrezing some shaky coaching and offensive line play. His bad Septembers are not kewl, but once he's on, its pretty clearly on. He's still a dream on 3rd downs and again...some of the throws he HITS are repeatable and hard af to stop.

Tua - Please stay healthy! Please! Let me see a whole season of this cool fit between coaching philosophy and personnel! Please! Hell, I'll be greedy here: give me this left-handed Brees shit for like a decade. I'll take it!

Lamar - The media hates it and he got paid with his mama as his agent and made himself even mo money. But fuck that...the brother is out there making throws. Some of the 'metrics' are starting to telling the same story on him too. If cats quit dropping the mfin ball, whooo ride. And he's still a problem when he's cut loose in the open field. He's not shiny or new anymore. But he's still here and someone is going to have to beat him. It might be his own wack ass team but still!

Hurts - He's still a party. He has a play that mainly works because of him that's so good that people are trying to outlaw it..like trying to stop Wilt from dunking and shit. That's gotta count for something! And he is STILL making deep killer throws all over the field. He's still elusive and will break a tackle when he tucks and runs. He hasn't been perfect with the new OC but I buy it with him. Dude went from being banished from Bama for Tua to being THIS. I like it. I love it. I want some more of it.

A couple more:

Josh Allen..arm talent is still out of this world. The throw this last week to the 3rd tight end who hadn't had a catch this year? BONKERS. And he's starting to get his turnover situation under control but its not nothing. I seem to hear a lot about that issue with Dak. JA is right there with Dak in that regard. I want him to run less so we get more time with him in the league. I'm looking right at Cam and Luck here. Just because you're big doesn't mean getting your ass knocked off half a dozen times a week is what you want.

Purdy is friggin good enough and that's cool even if the pundits don't want to admit it cuz of his warts in college or whatever. At his best, he sure seems like the ideal of a lot of the smaller/not physically special QBs who have gotten hot at various times over the last decade. I buy that he mostly makes good AND FAST decisions and that's all he needs most weeks. I hope he keeps it going cuz more good QBs is good for the game.

In response to Reply # 171

And honestly he's been elite going back to the middle of last year. Again, I don't think he's top 5 because I can't argue to knock down any of the above QBs. But RIGHT TODAY????? Goff might be #6.

..cause I don't recall anything about Goff's game/stats ever coming close to elite in any category.

In response to Reply # 185

Gift’s last 17 games had him at 29 TDs, 4 interceptions, just under 70% completion percentage and 5000 yards with the Lions at 13-4 during that 17 game stretch. For this season, including yesterdays game in which he and the rest of the Lions for blew out, he’s top. 5 in QBR and yards. Also at the time I posted it he’d just come off of a near perfect game at Tampa Bay in which he was absolutely making elite throws and decisions the entire game.

Again, I don’t think he’s top 5, but he’s in that 6-10 area and as of my post “RIGHT TODAY” which was “RIGHT LAST WEEK” at the time he was playing at an elite level.

In response to Reply # 181

coming out of his hand wobbly, or slipping out altogether

we got lucky (at the time, the beatdown after made it irrelevant) when they ruled some turfed screen pass as incomplete, but it looked to me like the ball was slipping out of his hand already and he just pushed it at the ground

idk if he jammed his finger during the week or something, but he seemed to have a lot of trouble getting a grip on the ball
