"'FOR PLAYER ONLY' (NBA) SHOULD put hipster journalists out of business. "
Tue Jan-23-18 07:59 PM by Orbit_Established

The players are infinitely more insightful, charismatic,
and intelligent than 99.999999999% of dickhead sports
journalists.

I know, I know -- Rasheed Wallace doesn't "look the part."

But his neurons work better, undoubtedly.

And then the fact that these dudes have rapport and
respect for one another....and share these amazing little
insights and details about the game.

There's nothing like it in sports.

And it's exactly why the NBA is the fastest rising, best
of the leagues: their players get an actual say every once
in a while.

Still not enough, though.

And irrelevant nerds will force themself into the game
somehow.

Would one only want to hear musicians talk about music?

You only want to hear writers talks about books?

You only want filmmakers to talk about film?

Boo bad journalism, cheer good journalism, that's it. But outsider perspectives have their own value.

That said, I love hearing insiders talk about their profession. I love having their voices in NBA media.

Because most things suck.

>Would one only want to hear musicians talk about music?

Actually, the best music critics have always been people
who have actually played an instrument or two. This has
been the case for decades.

And hearing elite musicians comment on other elite
musicians would pretty much be the best thing to ever
happen to music if we could organize it.

The reason it hasn't happened is because musicians are
busy and because nerdy journalists are the gatekeepers,
will continue to make themselves relevant.

>You only want to hear writers talks about books?

Actually, book critics are, by definition, writers. And
talented writers write good book reviews because they
are talented writers.

So...you should have thought this through.

>You only want filmmakers to talk about film?

Hearing elite filmmakers talk about other films would
be breathtaking. I wish it could happen.

And actually many good critics are filmmakers.

But that analogy doesn't work for other reasons.

>Boo bad journalism, cheer good journalism, that's it. But
>outsider perspectives have their own value.

And in sports, flabby nerds have dominated the voices
to their exclusion of athletes. That's unfair and fans
suffer because of it.

There are NO....NO....NO journalists who can talk about
basketball better than Isiah Thomas. None.

Says who? Prove it. That doesn't even sound right. And being able to "play an instrument" correlates to being a professional musician as "threw the football around in the backyard" does to the NFL.

Having been a rapper will not make you a good rap critic. In fact it could do the opposite.

>

It does happen. But that isn't the ONLY voice I want to hear.

EL-P interviewing Trent Reznor could be cool. I don't want to rely on EL-P as the only source of Trent Reznor music reviews and information.

LOL only an idiot thinks all writing is the same.

There are great novelists who are/would be terrible critics. And incredible critics who have never ever, ever wanted to be novelists or even tried to write a novel.

>

It does happen all the time lol, the point is that no one wants that to be the ONLY voice.

>And actually many good critics are filmmakers.

What? This is vague and likely unsupported. Gimme a who, when and where. Because as far as I know A.O. Scott and Roger Ebert were not feature film directors.

It's not an either or situation. At all. The more insightful voices, the better.

And until now, the voices have been almost exclusively
flabby herbs.

Give the athletes a MUCH bigger venue. They are smarter,
more informed, deliver a better experience.

you get a realistic shot at a chip, you gotta go for it. sometimes at the expense of the long term.

i hear ppl use that dumb phrase all the time to criticize certain teams: "they only won one title"

"only won one title"???

man, you know how many fans have gone thru their life seeing their team win zero titles?

bears fans still talk about '85. cubs fans will always have '16.

bron gave cavs fans something they'll never forget, and that no one can ever take away. even if they stink for the next 20 years it was worth it.

They're STILL the favs to get to the finals right today. Boston's too young, Toronto doesn't match up well. It'd be a real surprise to see either team beat Lebron 4 four of 7 games.

They should probably trade Love though.

Rozier was open. And if someone's gonna make a contested 3 at the buzzer, it's Kyrie.

Even Tatum on a terrible night is a better shooter than Smart in that scenario.

Dumbest thing I heard yesterday

The LAL are going to flip the roster again this offseason

Luke is basically guaranteed to keep his job through next season too

...as the person who made the fire Luke Walton post...

It was based on observations that other HCs have been fired for

While Luke continued to get fluff pieces and superlatives lauded his way when he needed to be held responsible for the disfunction and underperformance.

It's the worst defense a Bron-led Cavs team has ever had. They're 29th of 30 in team defense in the NBA. They'll quite possibly finish under .600 for the first time on a Bron-led Cavs team since 2008. And they're old. Unless they've got some stem cells injections back there, they won't get less old/better on defense.

I know teams like Boston and Toronto aren't world beaters as currently constructed... but the idea that the Cavs will struggle to keep up against a team with good offense and defense isn't as unlikely as people make it out to be.

Lebron's "fall off" will render him like, still in the
top 10 players in the league.

the high quality commentary provided by such TV luminaries as Reggie Miller and the savvy GM work of guys lik3 Vlade Divac show that playing the game and thinking about the game don't always overlap.
