Jul 01st 2014
190
Belgium made us "park the bus"
Jul 01st 2014
193
hard to play in the attacking half with 10 behind the ball
Jul 01st 2014
195
The strategy for this game was not to park any bus.
Jul 01st 2014
197
we stood deep, we didn't press, we had one forward -- that's parking it
Jul 01st 2014
207
lalas is really crazy on this set with his bullshitting
Jul 01st 2014
189
has he mentioned that he has a new album out?

Jul 01st 2014

USA faced 17 shots on goal today, 22 shots in entire 2010 WC
Jul 01st 2014
208
Plenty more than that v. Germany, if I recall.
Jul 01st 2014
210
did he have a better option up top?
Jul 01st 2014
212
coulda called in EJ, who did it during qualifying
Jul 01st 2014
215
As a back-to-goal striker, no.
Jul 01st 2014
216
yeah, we only ever showed our potential when we trailed
Jul 01st 2014
213
america cant afford to miss its clear cut #1 striker
Jul 01st 2014
221
Yeah, if only you were allowed to, like, change formations.
Jul 02nd 2014
236
           change to what? A 5-5?
Jul 02nd 2014
241
Why would it have to be "new" and "whipped up?"
Jul 02nd 2014
244
because anything without Altidore would *by nature* be that
Jul 02nd 2014
264
Let's see, plenty of 3-/5-man backlines this Cup.
Jul 02nd 2014
265
jesus christ, did they switch to that 20 minutes into the tournament??
Jul 02nd 2014
281
                                    Uh, no.
Jul 02nd 2014
290
im talking about 3 and 5 man back lines
Jul 02nd 2014
307
I think you're being a little delusional with your expectations.
Jul 01st 2014
225
comparing the 2010 team to the 2014 team is delusional?
Jul 01st 2014
226
If you think the 2010 team performed better than yes.
Jul 01st 2014
227
I don't think 2010 is better, but doesn't mean 2014 is beyond reproach
Jul 01st 2014
228
If the US had attacked Belgium.....
Jul 01st 2014
230
if you say so, guess I forgot Americans suck at soccer...
Jul 01st 2014
231
I dunno but I don't see that, personally
Jul 02nd 2014
233
It's as though 2002 never existed.
Jul 02nd 2014
237
Sigh, since this 2002 shit won't go away, let's recap
Jul 02nd 2014
251
                          Quarterfinals.
Jul 02nd 2014
254
                          mexico
Jul 02nd 2014
256
This argument is subjective, and moot.
Jul 02nd 2014
258
Klinsy strategy yesterday is a separate issue (for me)
Jul 02nd 2014
260
yesterdays setup was the ONLY issue for me; great group stage for Klinsi
Jul 02nd 2014
262
My observation reduces to this: there never was a plan B.
Jul 02nd 2014
263
valid point, but not sure that many teams have good plan Bs
Jul 02nd 2014
271
but we've missed Jozy before, passed on seemingly obvious depth options
Jul 02nd 2014
277
                                                   Eh....yeah....
Jul 02nd 2014
296
Let's do the same for 2014:
Jul 02nd 2014
259
Put Lukaku in the 70th minute...
Jul 01st 2014
218
good effort! good job!
Jul 01st 2014

Harry Potter nerds and the growing soccer demographic should have fantastic overlap, I'm trusting one of those kids read close enough to be able to do what needs to be done to help out the Stars and Stripes today. Ghana got their witch doctors, it's time for our covens and wiccans and whatever else to earn the keep afforded to them by the Constitution, Thomas Edison, and the US of fucking A.

Because if we replicate our performance against Ghana or Germany, I don't think it's good enough. We earned our chance in the knock-out with pragmatism, now it's time to take advantage of some tactical flexibility and give Belgium a switch. And Clint is starting to look run-down doing all the work up top by himself.

My wishful lineup:

Howard
Johnson--Omar--Besler--DMB
Zusi--Beckerman--Bradley--Jones
Wondo--Clint

There's no way someone could play effective professional soccer for longer than a few minutes just a couple weeks after a strained hamstring.

you know what we haven't seen so far in the knock out round? a blow out, a game where one team runs away with it and keeps pouring it on. the closest we came to that was Colombia, but they took their collective foot off the pedal after the 2nd goal...I'm counting on Argentina today.

before the tournament begun. their first round was a little underwhelming, so the hype died down, but there's a lot of talent on this team (in particular Hazard, who's a top 10 player, maybe top 5).

they're much better than Ghana or Portugal...

Besides that, he's an MLS homegrown and played for Caleb Porter in college, so I'm still pleased he's doing well.

Main concern is positioning, relies on speed to cover mistakes in MLS. He's done well so far.

He's got a lot of defensive responsibilities without Beckerman behind him. And with Wistel and Fellani and De Bruyne in counterattacking positions, he needs to really pick his spots. Yedlin and Beasley are overlapping a lot and may be out of position quite a bit.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

He just passes the ball sideways or backwards like he's trying to pad his stats.

How about getting the guys moving forward, you know...like your job.

And we scored less through qualifiers than we did under Bradley (conceded less, too). Klinsi's done well enough, no doubt, but he's hardly a messiah and as far as his sweeping promises of transformation, he hasn't delivered. We conceded the most shots through the group stage (although generally from less threatening positions), had the least possession in the Round of 16, set a national record for lowest possession ever in the Germany game we supposedly tried to win?

We got what we deserved out of the Belgium. Sadly I've watched enough DCU to know even Ben Olsen knows how to park the damn bus. Would feel much better about losing if we really tried to win today instead of just playing for the penalties.

But in the end that all ends up as a complaint cuz Klinsi promised an attacking transformation, and instead we got some of the most negative US Soccer ever. He got results, though, and shone a light on some deserving players, so I'm looking forward to his next four years.

and if not for a missed handball on the goal line, there's a decent chance we would have been in the semis. That's the best soccer we've ever played.

We're past the days of thinking only conceding one to Germany is good enough. This was a tougher group, no doubt, but getting 4 points was always in reach for America. We need to stop acting like it's a surprise that we advance out of the group, when we're like one of five or six nations to have as many round of 16 games as we've had since '94. Portugal was always in our reach, especially with an injured Ronaldo. Ghana has been on our level, even if they've been our nemesis. Bob Bradley wasn't that far away from keeping Ghana out of this WC with Egypt.

We did well at this World Cup, but just stop with this being some high water mark. The 2010 World Cup team scored more in qualifying, how is this one more dangerous?

Because there's a lot on the field that reflects a less than well-coached side, namely when we have the damn ball in possession.

I'm not all down on JK, but fans of this team should expect more than they got out of this display.

you don't really have that type of player yet, and that's not something Klinsmann can coach at this level...it would need to start with the youth teams

there was a significant gap in talent between the two teams, yet the US competed. Seems like good coaching to me.

and yes, having the awareness to pull that kind of stunt on a long distance free kick, instead of just sending it into the box like most teams would do, is also a sign of good coaching.

In the match I watched, the Belgians got everything they wanted in attack. I'm not sure a game plan based on hoping for poor finishing and an all-time legendary performance from your keeper is evidence of good coaching at all.

Klinsmann knew his team would have to surrender possession, and was indeed counting on his world class goal keeper to hold the fort until they could score on a counter...he probably didn't expect the game to be this lopsided, but frankly, that doesn't have much to do with his line up or with tactics, it has to do with the Belgian players being much more skilled at 1-keeping the ball and 2-grabbing it back when they lose it.

Nevertheless, his game plan was one Wondo fuck up away from succeeding. Not only that, but once the US got down, they were really close to tie it back up in the second half of extra time, thanks to a higher fitness level than their opponents (and that has nothing to do with them defending all game, defending is actually a lot more tiresome than attacking).

All that while playing without his main striker, too. Not sure what more you want from him...

did we talk about how that routine was totally lifted from Pep's playbook at Barcelona? It's a copy, nothing more.

We have players who can knock the ball around. Bradley's first touch largely left us down in this tournament, for some reason. I like him, but given his inability to control the damn ball, we should have tried something else, at least ONCE.

Where the fuck was Mix?

That said, I knew he was going to get on the end of a ball in the box SOMEHOW during his shift, left to wonder what might have been if we tried to leave our end a little more frequently in the first 75'

Pleased to see Yedlin step into the moment. Another sign MLS is the way forward for USMNT -- homegrown player, brought up in the Sounders umbrella, got a year in college under Caleb Porter. Looking forward to some more MLS guys getting time to shine like Yedlin, show they can hang, now that this cycle is over...

and you still think you can't be good and play in MLS, then yeah sure. But he's on a homegrown contract, which I hear isn't very player friendly, and the league has made something of a mandate to not sell a player unless they're getting what they think is a fair price. It's supposedly why Cameron to Stoke took so long, and I heard Cam ultimately went for $5M.

Yedlin, meanwhile, is playing professionally in the town he grew up in, with a crowd of 40k at every home game, a 90-minute player every week, and a league with an interest in both retaining him and promoting him -- why exactly would he be dying to go the path of a Juan Aguedelo (who was denied his work permit) or a Jozy Altidore (who has never found the right situation, and I'm guessing will be back in MLS soon)? Oh right, because after watching Besler, Beckerman, + Omar play great, you think any MLS player capable of showing well for 90' for some reason needs to flee...

In response to Reply # 219

>Its not about can't anything...he's gonna get paid

by who? MLS has him in an extremely favorable contract situation (per player's union release, Yedlin is on $92k/yr) and Yedlin can't move unless MLS releases him from the deal. There's no free agency in MLS, it's single entity, so even if some other team wants to pay him more, it doesn't matter. His contract is owned by the league office in NYC, not Seattle. No one can outbid them. I also don't know the exact details, but I have heard that homegrown contracts (which Yedlin is on) are extremely favorable for the league, not so much for the player.

Is Yedlin due for a raise? Yes, probably, but it won't be that easy to get. Seattle already has 3 DPs, so per league rules Yedlin couldn't make more than ~$335k anyway (although there is a newish thing called "retention funds" created essentially for this exact problem, which was used by Kansas City to re-sign Zusi at an above DP rate without actually making him a DP, so that should work in Yedlin's favor).

Overall the whole league is in a pretty big fight in the upcoming CBA negotiations, though, since the recent TV deal and huge contracts to the USMNT guys have left most feeling like they're overdue for a raise. Key items the player's union has wanted, but failed to get in the past, is the ability to negotiate with independent teams instead of the league office and also guaranteed contracts. We'll see how that goes.

So that's what I'm talking about. Yedlin is in a situation where he's largely controlled by MLS.

>I dont think a transfer fee will hold anything up. He may not
>get a call but if someone wants him they'll get him

It held up the Cameron deal for quite a while before Stoke ponied up. The league is aware its players are worth more than the market generally values them at, and they've made it a key point of concern to get what they consider fair market prices for the talent they're developing. MLS wouldn't really mind being a selling league, as long as they were getting the sort of top dollar prices that other leagues are getting to help put back into their investments.

So a young, promising, flair filled en vogue attacking full-back like Yedlin? Yeah, MLS isn't going to just let him walk unless a team wants to pay a hefty price. People in MLS believed in DeAndre Yedlin long before the injury enforced sub tonight (hence the homegrown deal), they're going to make sure whoever the buyer is pays the appropriate price for the player they're getting.

>Uh Jozy Altidore led AZ to a cup and made 1st team Eredivisie

Good year for him. I'm hoping he can re-find the same form, not the form from all the other failed stops, when he returns to MLS in July.

>I dont think anyone needs to flee. You are histrionic right
>now lol. I just think Yedlin is going to be financially
>induced

See above. I'm hoping the whole league gets a nice big raise in the next CBA, because there a lot more people than just Yedlin that are undervalued (Besler, for example, is making $200k/yr while playing nearly flawless against Ghana, Portugal, Germany, and Belgium ... for 90'). But yeah, it's not as easy as "highest bidder gets the prize" in MLS.

We need more innate skill, creativity, and finishing ability to go along with the toughness, stamina, and ( the cliché but true) heart that an MLS/American born player typically brings.

I love what Klinsmann is doing. The future is bright.

Belgium will kill you with 1000 dribbles and attacks from all angles. Their main problem is finishing, which is a problem that they didn't have with Benteke. The Krakan( lukaku) is still forming, so he is going to be great in some games, but terrible in others. This is his first world cup so that is understandable, but to be able to bring him on after like 90 minutes of play is just so unfair.

Most of the players on Belgium play in the EPL, which is a huge advantage for them, because the epl is a very physical league...and that is why they play with so much physicality on the ball.

fellani, hazard, kevin, company, Mrlsh..were all brilliant....However, their horrible finishing made howard look like superman, even though he had a great game.

Debryune is better than willian, oscar, shirley, and selah. It's not even close. Dude has the physicality, the passing ability, the vision, the defense, and the endurance. But jose let him walk out the door because he wanted more playing time ...ridiculous...Dude is made for the EPL, and is going to best the player in the germany league in another year or two.

Hazard,, the kraken, courtois, debryune...Chelsea was all over this one.

But on a shitty note, we signed Costa...Now I have to root for him and Cesc...disgusting. Damn I hope we suck so jose can get sacked by the winter transfer window.

America?..lol....There isn't one technical player on the team. If Jurgen thinks he is going to win by clogging the box, and looking for a couple of counters to get goals, then dude might as well resign now ...America was dominated for the entire match, and should have lost by 5 goals, but of course the media is going to call it a glorified loss.

Anyone who plays a wide open game against Belgium are going to get waffle-fucked. I don't see Argentina beating them, but they are young and inexperienced so that might trip them up.

Coaches, i.e. Klinsmann, park the bus. Whether or not it's the best strategy for the USMNT to get a result v. Belgium is debatable, and if Wondo finishes, it probably works. But parking the bus is a tactical decision; it's not dictated by the players on the field.

There is absolutely no way Klinsmann told our guys to play behind the ball knowing Belgium isn't a hard pressing side.

We went into this game hoping we could play like we did against Portugal. We "parked the bus" because we did not have the skill to form a proper attack and Belgium took full advantage of that with superior midfield talent. We had no choice but to defend for our lives.

just because we have athletic fullbacks that can get up and down the line, as well as very mobile midfielders capable of combining with them to get forward, doesn't change the fact that we stood deep and invited Belgium onto us whenever we weren't in possession.

My problem, as you've mentioned, is that there was nothing remotely innovative or interesting about anything Klinsmann did. His tactics didn't seem to vary from Ghana through today, and there was no backup plan when Jozy went down. It was just, "oh, I guess I'll just put Clint there," despite the two being nothing alike.

or brought along Terrence Boyd considering there's always a chance Jozy won't be available every match. Or he could have re-worked his tactics to accomodate Jozy's absence, instead of just putting Clint there and then seemingly playing Michael Bradley as a box-to-box second forward? I don't think there's a coach in the world who could lose one forward, seemingly have zero back-up plan, and escape all criticism for that.

And if what your system needs is a hold-up forward to relieve pressure, why not call in Juan Aguedelo? Why not call in Will Bruin? Or like I said, EJ or Boyd who were part of the program through qualifying.

Americans should be very pleased with this showing. Alot of the statistics you keep citing are not strong indicators of performance. Howard was solid, yes....but I can't recall any spectacular saves. The really good ones were directed at him for the most part. When you play a team with WAYYYYY more talent than you.....shots on goal are expected to be uneven. That's what counter-attacking football is. You trade 5 shots made under duress for 1 open chance.

The last 10 minutes of the match was an ONSLAUGHT. I have never seen an American soccer team dominate a powerhouse nation like that ever before. That is the FIRST time that's ever happened. They came a whisker away from tying it. Perhaps it's the Fifa rankings that throw people off. USA is always gonna be ranked higher than they should cause of the Concacaf.

You can bash CONCACAF as much as you like, but this is a fact:

Only Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Mexico have made more knockout stages in the last four World Cups.

I was saying five had outperformed us above, but that's wrong. Only four nations have advanced past more groups. Why should we apologize for qualifying out of CONCACAF when we consistently perform at the actual World Cup?

Another pretty fair point of comparison would be how we did in the qualifiers, full competive matches, against the same CONCACAF opponents, where we scored less and conceded less than we did under Bradley. Essentially, the 2014 USMNT is playing more conservatively than the 2010 squad. Which is fine because it got results, but it's completely fair to question if this is "progress."

And yeah, I fully believe that if an American was at the helm for a performance like this, he would be nitpicked and critiqued to death for the negative tactics and relying on the keeper to be the best player in the game. Because it's Klinsmann, we laud the "progress," despite there being no tangible progress in the games. So yeah, fuck the stats, obviously they must be wrong if they say the German played the most negative football the USMNT has used in a WC in years...

AND WE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED LIKE WE DID IN THE LAST 15 MINUTES SOOOOO MUCH EARLIER!! It just CONFIRMS we were way too conservative!

I think we played the more negative football in this WC than we have in years (and that's borne out in the stats, never mind wonky tactics talk), and that's disappointing, because I think we had the ability to attack more and attempt to play more on even terms. What we did against Portugal isn't a fluke. It's what we're capable of. I'm pleased with the results we got, but that doesn't mean I'm happy we decided to hold off attacking Belgium until the 105', Wondo shank aside.

It's the rest of the world that seems shocked we can hang. I'm disappointed we didn't attempt to show more, because I know we can.

Of course I could easily be wrong but to me I think opening up their game would have had disastrous consequences, especially today. Do they really have the skill to play an attacking game? Today they tried to play to their strengths and just looked beat. Let's put it this way, in my completely non-expert opinion, this was roughly the best they were going to do in the tournament, four or five points and a "close" loss. maybe if they would have gotten a better draw they could have won an elimination game, but that's pretty tough without winning your group or getting extremely lucky.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Game 1: jump on Portugal early, get two goals and an own goal. Once Portugal realizes the tournament has started, they proceed to kick our ass for 60 minutes. We hang on for a break through victory, but let's not pretend a huge, huge amount of luck and enemy self combustion was involved.

Game 2: Get our ass kicked by the host for 90 minutes, saved by a penalty. South Korea is a semi finalist and a host, which makes it a little less awful, but we still got outplayed for 90 minutes by South Korea.

Game 3: Poland absolutely annihilates us. If you thought Germany or Belgium was bad, you're too young to remember what we did against a second tier UEFA squad with advancement on the line. We haven't played a World Cup match this bad since 5-1. We survive thanks to South Korea.

Game 4: We get an extremely fortunate draw against an opponent we know. No discredit, we beat Mexico on a neutral field and it was glorious. But it's worth asking whether we could have beaten any other qualifying opponent

Game 5: We outplay Germany. Again, it was awesome, and we deserved a tie. It's also worth noting that the Germans widely considered that team to be the worst German team in years and that they attributed advancing to the Final a result of luck and Kahn. Google it if ye doubt the claim.

Bottom line: we played our asses off in the knockout rounds. We didn't play nearly as tough a group, and we played like ass cheeks for the vast majority of those games (the exception being a half hour of good play against Portugal).

The 2002 team got lucky to play against Mexico in the knockout round, didn't have a single game as impressive as the 2014 performance against Portugal (and I'd argue Ghana), and didn't play a game nearly as bad as Poland. The entirety of the argument that they're better rests on drawing a familiar opponent in the second round. If we had drawn Costa Rica or Mexico this time, I'm confident we'd be moving on.

But that team never played a game as nice as 2014 Portugal, and the 2014 team never played close to as terribly as 2002 did against Portugal

Nice or terribly...I don't recall the particulars of matches I watched 12 years ago. I don't even remember particulars of matches I watched last week, to be honest.

But I remember very well the particulars of the match I watched yesterday. And I watched the Belgians set offensive records (not subjective - they did).

As such, I feel I'm well within my rights to question Klinsmann's tactical nous. A game plan based on "let's hope Timmy has the greatest game by a keeper in at least 40 years, possibly ever," is worth questioning.

in the field, the only coach/team that has shown the ability to switch efficiently between two different systems is Van Gaal w/the Netherlands
I guess you could argue Deschamps with or without Giroud, but that's a bit of a stretch

on all teams, there's one or two players whose absence is going to be difficult to make up for
probably the main reason Germany lost in 2010 was that Muller was suspended for the semi vs Spain

it's a tad unfair to shit on Klinsmann for that
especially when his team still managed to remain competitive against a definite contender to the title

and the formation we ultimately used in groups was really only implemented in the final two friendlies before the WC. Prior to that, we were using a 4-4-2 diamond, which showed up in the brief window in the run-up to the WC after Klinsmann fired the assistant he started with, Martin Vasquez (who was a big point of concern for me), and replaced him with Berti Vogts (I think? There was a shake-up + Vogts came in, forget the exact role). Before the diamond, we were doing tons of stuff based on the personnel in camp, so I think expecting a tactical wrinkle from Klinsmann is a pretty fair expectation given his willingness to experiment.

And we passed on seemingly obvious depth options for Jozy, which didn't seem like a big deal when Clint began his stint alone up top, but you could see him wear down the longer he had to battle outside his comforrt zone with little relief. It's really the 12-23 roster spots that deserve the most scrutiny in retrospect, but whatever -- Klinsmann has an unorthodox style with that and like I said I'm eager to see what he does going into next summer's Gold Cup. I expect us to beat Mexico.

I only hesitate because at the point in the match when I posted "Is it too late to switch to 5-4-1?" is was pretty clear the US was no longer competitive. More like blown off the pitch, in fact.

This is where I disgree with Celery: he's complaining about parking the bus. By 45', I was thinking we weren't parking a big enough bus. Big, gaping holes in midfield...

Game 1: We beat Ghana 2-1, nursing the hell out of an early goal that came from a throw-in when Ghana didn't seem focused in yet. Very good move by Clint, but in retrospect Ghana's John Boye just sets the bar for what will be a terrible tournament for him, allowing Clint to go 1v1 on the Ghana keeper with zero resistance. The US' 1st choice striker leaves early with injury and the attack largely dries up. The game is eventually won on another moment of poor defensive focus as the US buries a free header on one of the very few attacking opportunities they create in the 2nd half.

Game 2: the US thoroughly outplay Portugal and are disappointed with a draw. While there's plenty of blame to go around on the 95th minue equalizer, it might well begin with Klinsmann inexplicably urging his backline to push higher in extra time of extremely sapping jungle heat.

Game 3: the US advance despite not mustering a single shot on goal v. Germany. They have allowed the most shots of any team through the group stage, advance with the lowest possession % of any team in the Round of 16. If Ghana doesn't devolve and just knocks off Portugal 2-1, the US would be going home.

Game 4: the US allow a record setting # of shots, attaching touches in the final third, set a record for clearances while mustering very little in attack. Belgium ends the game praising the US goalkeeper, scratching their heads how it took an extra period to settle a completely lopsided affair.

Now, I've said I'm happy with Klinsmann, he did his job and gets his four more years. But we played more negative soccer in this tournament than we have in years. To me, it remains an open-ended question as to whether we should be happier about the coaching or happier about the expansion of the talent pool vis a vis the growth of our domestic league. I'm looking forward to the Gold Cup in 12 months where we will hopefully re-assert ourselves as the power in the region and we can see more young MLS talent (Yedlin, Gil, Trapp, Farrell, Acosta, Nagbe when he gets his citizenship, possibly McInerney, possibly Bruin, possibly Hedges, et. al.) along with more euro-based youngsters (Green, Zelalem, Gyau, Boyd, Brookes, et. al.) come through.

fuk zusi

our fastest attacking players shouldn't be coming from our backs

but being that our midfield is subpar

we need speed on the wings to open up the field more and make their midfield drop back and help defend

even if we couldn't hold possession they still would have to account for speed

proud of the squad tho

our scheme was so dependant on a healthy jozy that we aint really have a plan b

thats my only knock on klinsi

we always waited till we were behind to go balls out

Say dat then.

It's a glaring, glaring hole.

It's too weak, too limited, too scared. And yes I'm talking about you Bradley.

Every time he got the ball those Belgiums got amped because they knew he was going to turn it over.

He's not wily enough to play in that position at this level. I'm sorry. The kid has NO vision. He doesn't see the pitch at all.

I'm not saying you need Pirlo, I'm saying god damn you can't find a fucking Obi Mikel even??

i'm not even putting that on Bradley per se. there's just a lack of quality MF talent across the board.

however, to be fair, these games would have probably looked a lot more "open" for the USA had Altidore not went down. then Dempsey could play behind him in his more natural instead of having to be an up top striker.

there's a lot of Klinsy hating going on in this post (which still surprises me) but if there was one mistake he made, it was not keeping EJ in the squad (or at least giving Aron Johannson (sp?) a second chance). I get EJ was on a bad run of form in the MLS but he was doing really nice in the run up to the WC for the USMNT. there just had to be another strike option. that's my only critique of Klinsmann.

he's not a bad player. he basically had the hardest job all WC of any player not named Howard. i don't think they targeted him because they knew he'd turn it over but they targeted him because he was one of the better players. i'm not saying he's perfect, but he's not nearly the problem everyone's all of the sudden making him out to be. midfield definitely needs work/help. defense also needs considerable help as well. but you can't put it all on Bradley. they've already stated that Bradley covered more ground that anyone else in the group stages (about 23 miles) so dude is out there working hard on offense and defense.

moreover how would it benefit the pool of current athletes filtering into those two leagues to move towards soccer specialization when this country's league will never compete with them in terms of cultural interest or financial benefit?

I mean US soccer should do their best to put some money into those communities and programs but it more than likely won't so we'll be stuck with the Landons or the foreign-national kids primarily.

With many of them more than 1-2 inches under

People were worried about Trey Burke's size at 6'0 even as the Natl POY. Even at defensive back, the smallest position in the NFL, 5'9 160 aint enough.

The type of body that ends up playing pro soccer has very little overlap with the bodies that end up in the NFL or NBA

Height is useful in soccer at keeper, center back, and striker. Less so on the wings and in the midfield. If you're above 6'2" or so, you're probably up front or in the back, but it doesn't have much to do with anything beyond that.

I agree with your overall point, btw, and I think cgonz00c would too...what we're saying is that the competition for bodies is not so much with football or basketball, more so with baseball. Given baseball ever decreasing popularity in urban areas, there's actually a good opportunity. If the MLS managed to be just a tad more glamorous (with more money for players), it might do the trick.

and other assorted roles (your scatbacks, Desean type of wideouts, etc) could also be in that category.

But even if we're not talking about people in these leagues, there's still whole cross-sections of quality athletes that aren't going to play it.

However if baseball was the main comp, I'd think US soccer would be well-advised to pump some money into programs beyond the baseball RBI programs currently going.

AI would be considered tall, Desean would be average

that's precisely cgoonz's (sp.?) point...soccer is not competing with football or basketball for all available athletes, the overlap is actually pretty small. So, it could happen, especially considering football will suffer from the concussion thing, so guys that are undersized and are a long shot to succeed in football will consider it.

Yedlin sure looked like a top tier athlete yesterday

it probably helped that he's got Latvian roots, meaning soccer was part of the culture in his family...but there's a huge reservoir of kids like him in the country (not Latvian, but w/Latin American roots)

really, I don't disagree with your point. It's just that I would target kids that end up playing baseball rather than the basketball/football athletes.

>And while winning this thing would be nice, it's never going
>to matter more than the NBA or NFL here nor probably should
>it.

it all boils down to people realizing the limitations of the team
US basically got out played in 3 of the 4 games
and fucked up bad in crunch time in the one game they "dominated"
even with that ppl were taking off work, filling up bars/restaurants, and watching the hell out of those games
i think if USA actually gets to a level where it's a SERIOUS contender for the WC it could get up there with the likes of the NBA finals/MLB WS

I mean if we were in the World Cup Final this year that might have done at/above Super Bowl numbers.

I enjoyed watching these games & even a good deal of the non-American games in this tourney.

But we've done big numbers for Olympics & whatnot before, Americans having a chance to experience camaraderie & be an underdog at the same time can't be overstated.

I fully expect the next Cup to generate even more interest if we do as well or better.

But there's really no hope for the four years of time/space in between on a national level and there's no chance we can truly compete at an international champion caliber level without our best American athletes, the majority of whom are going to continue aiming towards the NBA/NFL & maybe even MLB slightly more.

When the AIs come to soccer, we got a shot.

Til then, not.

this Cup than probably most people in this post and enjoyed it, partly the joys of 'working from home' this summer.

World Cup games certainly trounce watching four-hour regular-season baseball games.

That doesn't mean I believe that the MLS is going to be the NFL & NBA.

When they get the athletes from the place our best athletes come from, that's when we might be able to win was my point.

Nobody inside MLS would say the target is NBA or NFL. I think more would say the target is La Liga (which really has three teams and then a bunch struggling to make payroll) or Serie A (similar situation). It DEFINITELY has Liga MX in its sights, and I think most execs would say it's a higher priority to beat Mexican powers than it is to do something like pass the NHL in some metric, because then MLS could be more of a magnet for regional talent and keep upping its play. The measuring stick is other soccer leagues, not leagues playing a totally different sport.

that, and the MLS clubs should compete in inter-league competitions with South American clubs
this should be lobbying priority #1 for the US federation (and all other CONCACAF federations, for that matter)

I guess they don't push for it because they want to preserve separate zones for world cup qualifying
but that's how you would get better

From 1954 to 1986 the US didnt qualify once and in 1990 they finished 23rd of 24

Since 94 the US has advanced to the ko stage 3 of 5 tournaments, made a quarterfinal, and come within inches of 2 more.

Seems like night and day to me.

in real numbers, meanwhile you're in here talking about 1950 to 1990 when my generation that started playing (let's say that 84-88) still wouldn't be out of adolescence as evidence of something?

I'm talking about World Cup titles & being a major sport.

The event being here in '94 didn't 'change anything' as far as us hurdling those things.

MLS would be done + dusted if not for the long-term vision of a few key big pocket spenders through the late '90s + early '00s. There's no big ESPN deal upcoming or Arab money investors in New York unless a few stalwarts stuck to a long-term vision even when everybody told them it was a pipe dream. The league has survived the lean years, now it's focused on and poised for stable growth.

I mean, you've said you can see the fans' reaction to the WC has changed, the next step is for the domestic league to keep piggybacking that.

I agree that the NBA and the NFL are major commpetition for top athletes in the US. And US Soccer would do well to try and develop players from similar regions where the football and basketball rule.

that soccer hasn't reached major sport levels here where we're expected to win like say, USA Basketball in '04, otherwise the backlash & scapegoating he'd be facing would be so strong he might for a few days forget he was white.

Instead, we got to enjoy & be proud of a team winning one game out of four in international competition while Bradley missed a couple shots that I would have buried playing on my ten-year-old traveling team.

Take the good, take the bad.

A player like Michael Bradley would likely be nowhere near the starting 11, much less the lynchpin of the team.

As it stands, if this were normal league play, the US would have finished with a win and two draws, about right for a mid-table team. To me, that's accurate to where we fit in compared to the rest of the countries at the World Cup.

Glimmers of in-fighting, a rabidly critical domestic press, and the English our jealous of our head coach .... US Soccer is growing up y'all *wipes single tear from eye*

(Make sure you catch the quote at the very bottom, too -- never change, Lando)

World Cup: Landon Donovan critical of USMNT's approach: "I don't think we were set up to succeed"

JULY 2, 2014
Scott French
MLSsoccer.com

CARSON, Calif. – Landon Donovan, like all Americans, was disappointed to see the United States exit the World Cup and thought they fought gallantly against a more talented Belgium side in the round of 16, but he doesn't believe Jurgen Klinsmann's tactics gave the team a chance to succeed.

Donovan, controversially omitted from the US roster, thinks Klinsmann backed off from a proactive approach leading to the World Cup and that doing so harmed the Yanks' chance to advance further.

"It's certainly a missed opportunity," he said following the LA Galaxy's training session Wednesday morning, a day after the US lost in overtime to Belgium. "The thought of having a game Saturday – the day after the Fourth of July, against Messi and Argentina, with what was already a swelling audience – would have been incredible.

"I think we're all disappointed in what happened yesterday. I think the most disappointing is we didn't seem like we gave it a real effort, from a tactical standpoint. I thought the guys did everything they could, they did everything that was asked of them, but I don't think we were set up to succeed yesterday, and that was tough to watch."

Donovan, who starred for the US at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups, said the tournament could be considered a success, given that the Americans emerged from a difficult group to reach the knockout stage.

"It's a results-oriented business, and so, results-wise, you can hold your head high," he said. "If you really look at the performances, there were some good performances by guys, some not-so-good performances by guys. As a whole, I think tactically, the team was not set up to succeed.

"They were set up in a way that was opposite from what they've been the past couple years, which is opening up, passing, attacking – trying to do that. And the team's been successful that way. Why they decided to switch that in the World Cup, none of us will know. From a playing standpoint, I think the guys will probably be disappointed in the way things went."

Asked whether it would have been wise to try to match up with a Belgian team that has so many talented attacking players, Donovan acknowledged that "everybody's an expert when they're watching at home" and that he "could pretend like I know what I'm talking about and what we should have done."

"Hindsight is 20/20, so in hindsight you would say we should've been more attacking," he said. "Maybe if we had been more attacking, we would have gotten four counterattack goals scored against us. So you never know. ... But my feeling as a player, if I'm in that locker room before that game – before the Germany game, before the Belgium game – and the coach walked in and said we're playing a 4-5-1 and Clint is up top by himself, I would have been disappointed. Because I would have said let's go for it. I want a chance to go for it and try to win the game."

He lauded Tim Howard and said that only Kasey Keller's performance to beat Brazil in the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals compares, in his mind, with the goalkeeper's 16-save performance Tuesday. He also asserted that Kyle Beckerman's presence would have helped the US be a better attacking side, and that the team deserves praise for fighting valiantly in difficult circumstances.

Donovan did not address how things might have been different had he been part of the team in Brazil, but he noted that Michael Bradley played in an "unnatural position" at attacking midfield and he would have been more effective in a deeper role with another player in front of him.

Donovan's best position arguably is in such a slot.

"Michael was put in the wrong position," he said. "He was put in a position that he's not used to playing. He does a better job, as you saw with Julian Green's goal, being in a deeper position. And having someone in a front of him, someone to help Clint also, makes him that much better because he's got more opportunity to pick out different passes, more attacking options ahead of him. I think that was clearly an error."

He said it was "tough to watch " because "as athletes, we all feel that we can help."

The US nearly pulled out a victory at the end of regulation, when Chris Wondolowski sent an open shot in front of the net over the crossbar, and nearly forced penalty kicks with a late thrust in overtime. Donovan said he hoped Wondolowski would not let the miss "define him."

"If that chance fell 10 more times, you want Wondo to be on the end of it," he said. "That's a perfect Wondo goal. You would have expected that that went in, and maybe the one out of 10 times happened that he didn't score. It's disappointing."

Donovan was noncommittal when asked if he would return to the national team or consider an overage spot on the Olympic team at the Rio de Janeiro Games in two years.

"We'll see," he said. "That depends on a lot of conversations that would have to be held."

326. "was the tactical turning point altidore going down?"
In response to Reply # 322

At least to me that's when we really went into the shell against Ghana

And we didn't break from it until Portugal scored, then we attacked until we went up ("best match ever" - Joe soccer), then it was back inside the shell for the rest of the matches.

I hated the tactical decisions too, it was like the team was never set up to be used in that way. But it almost worked. I just felt like we could never really stop anyone from scoring, so might as well attack. I think losing jozy sent jk into a panic and the response was to get extra conservative. And leaving LD off still looks like a huge mistake.

It's easy to say we should have attacked more when Howard plays lights out like he did, but the score could have been 4-0 at the end of regulation from how quickly Belgium got the ball downfield.

I would have liked to see more chances, but there were plenty of opportunities where we took one touch to many, or sent a long cross, or simply mis-struck the ball. And we're not having this conversation if Wondo taps that ball in. Then we're talking about the inspired substitutions Klinsman's been making all tournament long.

meanwhile belgium DESTROYED us for like 120 out of 125 minutes and we almost survived it.

i know you want to call hypocrisy on klinsmann but maybe you should ease up and examine why those people are so salty (and hypocritical) about him doing the sensible thing after jozy got knocked out. AND he managed to get run for all the young guys he brought to brazil.

I had a conversation with Bruce Boudreau and he said something profoundly un-Canadian. He said whatever sport Americans decide to dominate, they generally do it. If they really wanted to become the world power in hockey they could.

The same is true of soccer and it doesn't have to be our number one sport or have all our LeBrons and Larry Fitzgeralds either. But the interest in the game among athletes of advanced age and the total culture surrounding soccer has a very long way to go. We are competing against countries with hundreds of years of very serious tradition, plus all the training infrastructure and ingrained passion that go along with that. Do we have it? Don't kid yourself.

335. "Zonal Marking analysis:"
In response to Reply # 0

Too many charts to swipe, but here are highlights:

"This was a tremendously entertaining game, but Belgium should have put it to bed much earlier – only a tremendous goalkeeping display from Tim Howard kept USA in it."

"Cameron’s booking, on 18 minutes, for a terribly cynical foul to break up a Dries Mertens counter-attack suggested that, frankly, he didn’t know how to play the holding position."

"It’s difficult to remember another side at this World Cup leaving their defence so open throughout the game, and there were so, so many examples of dangerous Belgium counter-attacks."

"However, they’re rather fortunate to exit this competition as battling, narrowly defeated heroes – they should have been at least 2-0 down by half-time, and Klinsmann’s tactics would have been much more heavily criticised. The decision to drop Beckerman seemed strange on paper, turned out to be counter-productive on the pitch, and there was no attempt to solve the problem. Howard was absolutely fantastic, but if your goalkeeper has to make a record-breaking number of saves, something has gone wrong higher up the pitch."
