INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers announced Saturday they have signed free agent center Andrew Bynum to a contract for the remainder of the season. Per team policy, no terms were released.

The 7-1, 285-pound Bynum played seven seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and was part of their 2009 and 2010 NBA Championship teams. He was traded by the Lakers to Philadelphia in August, 2012, but missed the 2012-13 regular season with knee problems. He was signed this season as a free agent by Cleveland, played 24 games (8.4 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game) and was traded to Chicago, which released him. He has career averages of 11.5 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game. His best season was his last with the Lakers when he averaged 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds.

“We are obviously happy to have him join our team,” said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird. “He gives us added size, he is a skilled big man and he has championship experience. With the minutes he gets, he should be a valuable addition.”

Bynum will join the Pacers sometime next week.

“It really wasn’t a hard decision, I think it’s the right fit for me and, in all honesty, I think we’ve got the best chance of winning,” said Bynum. “It will be great to back up Roy and I’ll do whatever I can to help this team.”

thinking "oh, we don't want to disrupt our
locker-room." -- Well, would you rather
disrupt your chances at 3-peating?

I bet if Miami was told that if they didn't
sign Bynum, Indian would - they would've
signed him.

Yes, I thought Miami dropped the ball by not
signing Bynum, knowing that the path to the
Finals will go through Indy - who likely
will have home-court advantage.

particularly this year - it's far too casual.

they've always been a cool/calm & casual team,
but this year it's to the point of self-destruction
IMO.

Just because you are 2-time champs doesn't mean
you can just take home-court advantage for granted,
which I think they are doing this year. Would they
have defeated Indiana w/ out home-court adv. last
year? What about the Spurs?

They did defeat OKC w/ out home-court advantage, but
this year - if their current win/loss ratio continues
at this rate, they will likely have to march through the ECF
& the Finals having yielded home-court advantage to their
opponent - to teams who have gotten better.

Tall order.

I don't really think anyone would place this
year's loss on Lebron, unless he just flat-out
disappears. But he has carried this team to
2 straight 'chips, and has had less than expected
contributions from the other Big 2, so he is really
the last person to blame...

but as for excuses? none, either. He's anomalous
enough of a player that he should be able to overcome
what seems to be on paper a heavily favored Pacer team.
That's what great players do, and that's what he's done
the past 2 years when Miami was the underdog vs. OKC
& S.A. in the Finals.

if most analysts are picking you and the betting lines say your favored, you're not the underdog. they might have opened as slight dogs to OKC (personally i thought OKC was going to win) but not against the spurs. analysts i thought were more divided on the SA series than the OKC one, especially considering the narrative at the time was playing off the 2011 finals.

this is not a ridiculous claim but it's not a clearly accurate one either. i once had someone tell me that despite both those things being true of the pistons in 04, the lakers were underdogs. i hope god smited him by now.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Right. Most analysts picked OKC, and vegas favored OKC -170
Thus, Miami was the underdog.

>analysts i thought were more
>divided on the SA series than the OKC one,

They definitely were. Most analysts picked OKC
while it was more/less split with SA. Vegas
favored MIA slightly (-120 I believe) - but after
game 1, S.A. was the betting favorite for the remainder
of the series. It was close, but Miami wasn't
a predominate favorite in either series.

Rarely is there a *heavy* favorite in the Finals.

my point was - Miami hasn't really ever been the predominate
favorite in vegas - or amongst analysts - and I don't expect
them to be the favorite this year, either.

14. "OKC opened as a -1.7 fav. vs. Miami in 2012"
In response to Reply # 12

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-basketball/19332621/nba-finals-thunder-favored-by-vegas-oddsmakers

and as I look back - Miami was the
initial thin fav. v. S.A. but then after
game 1 were the +1.20 underdog (obviously) - so
it was close, but I do remember
most nba "experts" (via TNT, ESPN)
picking the spurs over Miami.

But the consensus in vegas & amongst
analysts in 2012 was clear: OKC.

He "carried" Wade and Bosh in those 2 finals?
Wade averaged 22.6ppg, 6reb and 5ast...Bosh was at 14.6 with 9reb. vs OKC.
I'll grant you that he did more work in the SA series, but to say he "carried" them is pushing their (along with Ray Allen) performances under the bus...they did what they were supposed to do. It's not like how Durant and Westbrook carried OKC in the Finals while Harden and Ibaka and the rest were no shows. The Heat were a lot more balanced, with Lebron leading the way.

They did what they were
>but as for excuses? none, either. He's anomalous
>enough of a player that he should be able to overcome
>what seems to be on paper a heavily favored Pacer team.
>That's what great players do, and that's what he's done
>the past 2 years when Miami was the underdog vs. OKC
>& S.A. in the Finals.
If the Heat lose, to pin it on Lebron is crazy, assuming he plays the way he usually plays. If anything, this year is the time for the rest of the reserves to step up because it'll prove how much he needs his team. He has the team with the talent to beat the Pacers, albeit a bad matchup. But if he plays poorly, then he's gonna get fried

but his size, defense & rebounding was missed vs Boston in 2008 and needed vs Orlando in 2009 and Boston in 2010. You're underestimating how a rotation of Hibbert & Bynum could impact a team like Miami offensively. If they make Miami a hair more inefficient by making it tougher to drive the lane that could be the difference in the series that was extremely tight last year.

It's Melo's fault that Kenyon Martin is old and was the #1 pick 14 years ago in a terrible draft.

It's Melo's fault that Bargnani hasn't magically turned into a good player since joining the Knicks.

WHO COULDN'T WIN WITH KENYON MARTIN AND ANDREA BARGNANI!!!!???

why? because he/Heat weren't able to beat a team that ppl have favored (pre-Bynum) over them to come out of the east?

you should be the last person talking abt excuses/plea coppin as much as you been on here giving every excuse you can think of as to why Melo flamed out in last year's playoff series vs the Pacers in *3* straight gms and also why the Knicks STINK this year. Oh, blame it all on JR....

The only time Drew has ever been motivated was when we were in championship contention...I give him a lot of credit for playing through his leg injuries in '09 and '10. With Indy, he finds himself in that situation once again...and it's one of the few teams that he will fit into immediately because he can fill Hibbert's role when he goes out or gets into foul trouble. At bare minimum it means Miami can't sign him.

They just needed to keep him away from the Heat roster, where regardless of personality issues he absolutely would've been a huge gain in their biggest position of weakness.

Any minutes they get out of him are just a bonus at this point.

shocking how quickly shit changes

a few years ago

Bynum was a back to back champ

and Oden was still looking to get on the court

today, I'd take Oden > Bynum

even if he can play, he's a f'n side show at this point

and I don't expect this to end well

Come play off time Miami, just like last year, will abuse Hill / Lance on blitz's and cause a bunch of turnovers. Despite the hype that guard rotation is still garbage under pressure.

They are already deep at center, Bynum will have to play his way into shape without much tick and gets in where he fits in (mentally, within the team, etc).

I don't mind the gamble but you have to wonder WTF is going on with this guy? Maybe more risk than reward here, even though I imagine we are talking a prorated minimum salary or otherwise limited investment financially.

As far as Miami goes, well, if they wanted Bynum why weren't they beating down his door? I think the cockblocking the Heat angle is overplayed here. Miami is succeeding playing small, why change? Look at OKC last week, how much did Perk and Addams play? Practically nothing, I didn't see the entire game but I don't think they were on the floor at all. It's not like teams are gearing up with a bunch of bigs to play smash mouth ball against the Heat. They are more likely to try and match up with a small lineup of their own.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

bynum isn't a rim protector
his impact will be minimal, if he even gets tick in a heat series
cleveland was an opportunity for him to be a legitimate #2 or even #1 on a team basically begging for some form of leadership
and he literally fucks his way out of town
not worried at all

In response to Reply # 47

But Bynum gives them another low-post scoring
threat, which Mahinmi isn't. This move was
done specifically to get past Miami in the east.

Already, Miami doesn't match up well w/ Indiana -
David West has a field day every time they play,
and there's no answer for Hibbert if he's in a
groove. They saw that, so why not low-end gamble
on a guy who has proven he can really score if motivated/
healthy enough play. Even if you get a 50% Bynum for
12 minutes a game, it could be the difference in a series
that was as close as Mia-Ind ECF 2013.

It's not like
>teams are gearing up with a bunch of bigs to play smash mouth
>ball against the Heat. They are more likely to try and match
>up with a small lineup of their own.

Except for Indiana, and they've found success playing smash-
mouth against Miami. Also, they are bitter rivals w/ Miami
and have been open about their primary goal this year to
get the top seed in the East. Why? To beat Miami. It's their
focus, and it should be. I think this move shows real commitment
within the organization to do whatever it takes to beat Miami,
even if it means signing Bynum, who has been a clown of late. I'd
take that gamble to win.

i said in the original thread about this that bynum could easily take minutes from any backup center in the league.

but more likely he will be injured or just utterly uninspired. to me it's obvious when a guy has lost his competitive fire, because it's pretty much the sine qua non of being a pro athlete for any substantial length of time.

i think miami is still in fine shape. i'd like to see the pacers beat them. i think a point guard mismatch would be bigger than a mismatch of 8th men.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

At one point he was the #2 center in the league behind D12. He played VERY well for the Lakers to get those 2 titles.

SINCE then he hasn't done shit, and that has been because of injuries and lack of motivation. I don't think this move is that big a deal, but if he's healthy and motivated it's low risk high reward for the Pacers

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/12/reason-for-andrew-bynum-getting-kicked-out-of-practice-and-suspended-by-cavs-revealed-and-its-hilarious/

Andrew Bynum has done just fine for himself, having landed with a legitimate title contender in the Pacers after stops in Philadelphia and Cleveland that haven’t worked out, to say the very least.

Last season with the Sixers, Bynum never got healthy enough to be able to play in even a single game for the team that traded Andre Iguodala in hopes of landing the All-Star version of Bynum we saw in his final year in Los Angeles.

The Cavaliers took a chance on him with a low-risk, incentive-laden contract that could have been worth up to $25 million over two years, but things ended with a messy divorce that saw Bynum traded to the Bulls for Luol Deng, who is likely to leave at the end of this season as an unrestricted free agent.

The details surrounding Bynum’s dismissal in Cleveland have remained murky until now, with the team perhaps not wanting to disparage the big man’s reputation any further while they tried to deal him out of town. Now that he’s gone, however, we finally know exactly what behavior ultimately pushed the Cavaliers over the edge.

From Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

"Only Bynum never made it to the early January guarantee date for his full $12.5 million salary in 2013-14, and self-destructed. He stopped trying on the floor, and became a disruptive presence in practices. Before Bynum was thrown out of his final practice and suspended, he was shooting the ball every time he touched it in a practice scrimmage, sources said – from whatever remote part of the court he had caught the ball."

Amazing, mainly because of the level of blatant disrespect doing something like this would show to both teammates and coaches.

Can you imagine?

Inbound pass to Bynum after a made basket, and instead of giving it back to the point guard to bring it up the floor, he launches an 80-footer. That’s obviously the most ridiculous scenario, but given the fact that it caused the team to cut ties with Bynum altogether, it’s probably not that much of a stretch.

and instead of this its more likely that he grabbed a defensive rebound and shot it immediately as opposed to someone inbounding the ball to him.

-The Knicksā€™ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

-The Knicksā€™ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Anything Bynum would've brought would've been bonus -
but at the time - i still thought it was a good move
simply to prevent Miami from signing him so that
Indiana could continue to exploit their front-court.

Of course, I was wrong because:

(1) Bynum is somewhere going full Tical mode right now
(2) Roy Hibbert forgot how to play basketball

So in retrospect, the Bynum signing meant what a lot of
you were saying - absolutely nothing.

Some desperate GM will sign him to another cavs type deal this off-season. Less guaranteed money and hope for the best. Unless he straight retires someone will pay him on a roll of the dice.
