"Poll question: Where should Kang go next?"

Now that it's clear Wade is simply not up
to the task of being a consistent, perennial
all-star like player because of injury and
premature decline, what should James do after
this season - when he will have the option to
go elsewhere if he so chooses?

Personally, I hope he returns to Cleveland,
assuming gilbert & co. have learned from their
management errors and have the ability to surround
LeBron with a viable championship-quality team, which
is a big assumption. But if he returned to Cleveland -
and won a 'chip or two - it would be an unbelievable
sports narrative unlike any other.

Bosh will probably stick around and collect the rest
of his $ - but with reports that Wade may actually
be considering retirement, would it be wise for James
to stay in Miami after he's already accomplished what
he set out to do there?

Poll result (34 votes)
stay in Miami (12 votes)Vote
Knicks (4 votes)Vote
Cleveland Renaissance (12 votes)Vote
L.A. (6 votes)Vote

interesting.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Wade obviously isn't an all-star this year,
and I think you have to make a pretty tough
case for Bosh being one this year at a clip
of 16/6. And Miami as a team is regressing.

But let's analyze all-time greats and champions
of recent vintage who have *all* had not just one,
but two other all-stars on their squad, shall we?

-Duncan (Ginobili & Parker)
-Kobe (Duncan/Gasol/Shaq)
-Magic (Kareem, Worthy, Cooper)
-Bird (McHale, Parrish, DJ)
-Jordan (Pippen, Grant/Rodman)
-Hakeem (Drexler, Horry/Elie/Smith/Cassell)
-Thomas (Laimbeer, Dumars, Rodman)
etc.. etc..

So yes, *nobody* wins multiple 'chips without big-time, all-star like
help, period.

or Ginobli were playing at an All-Star caliber level. In '03 DRob wasn't even remotely as good as 38 year old Duncan. In '03 and '05 Tony Parker/Ginobli weren't quite there yet. So yeah, it can be done. Rare, but definitely not impossible.

notice i listed "Rodman/Grant" next to Jordan
to indicate those diff. eras as well - but your
Kobestan fandom has you on tunnel vision.

But you of course won't address the substance
of this discussion: Which is, are you trying
to imply that Kobe didn't have *BIG* time help
when winning his titles?

Didn't think so.

weren't you arguing that "the past greats *all* had not just one, but two other all-stars on their championship squads"?

a lot of the examples you gave don't really support that.

kobe didn't play w/ 2 other all stars in any of his championship seasons. duncan didn't in '03 and '05. bulls-era rodman wasn't an all star. neither were any of those houston guys except drexler. and houston-era drexler (19 ppg, 6 rpg, 5 apg, 50% 2p, 34% 3p) wasn't any better than "non all star" 2014 wade (19 ppg, 5 rpg, 5 apg, 55% 2p, 42% 3p). 2014 bosh is better than some of those guys you listed too.

i agree with your overall point tho. no one wins it all without significant help.

That's the point. It's plausible that Wade or Bosh won't
make an all-start team this year or next, but does that mean
that James would've only played with 1 other all-star? Technically,
but not really.

Even if those guys weren't all-stars together - in the same
seasons - almost all of the listed teams had 2 complementary players who were all-stars (or near all-star level) throughout their careers - and played at very high-levels (with the exception of houston - although cassell was eventually an all-star and a huge piece in their
championship run).

and yes - I think it's fair to say that Houston-era Drexler
is similar to this version of Wade, although this version
of Wade is on the borderline of disqualifying himself if he
can't play consistently due to injury.

i'm saying there were seasons where jordan, kobe, duncan and olajuwon won titles where that wasn't the case.

duncan didn't have 2 "all star caliber" teammates in '03 or '05. rodman was a one dimensional specialist by the time he got to chicago. cassell made 1 all star team, 10 yrs after he played with hakeem. etc etc.

>you're saying "2 other all star caliber players, in the
>season that they won the championship"

I'm saying that all of those players were surrounded by
all-star caliber players - some had 2 - but virtually
all teams had 2 (if not 3) vital complementary players added
to the star, not just one.

>duncan didn't have 2 "all star caliber" teammates in '03 or
>'05. rodman was a one dimensional specialist by the time he
>got to chicago. cassell made 1 all star team, 10 yrs after he
>played with hakeem. etc etc.

Having said that, do you think that those Duncan teams, or that Houston team was any more deficient than the others in terms
of roster firepower? It's obviously not just about all-star level guys, but even at that - Duncan had young ginobili & parker to match with veteran D. Rob. So yes, technically they weren't all-stars at that particular time, but when you look at the overall makeup of that team in its aggregate, it's a studded squad.

this is a futile discussion because no teams are ever formed w/ the same dynamics, but the point is: all of those superstars had all-star level help, without exception.

that's all i'm saying.

wade and bosh are still very good players. they're better right today than some of the 2nds and 3rds that you listed were in yrs that they won titles.

bron's got plenty of help.

but he didn't for 7 years in Cleveland.

This was only a discussion because someone
asked: "so, Bron needs 2 perennial all-stars
to win?" as if all the other players listed
had less help than LeBron. Which isn't true.

which is what's key here, you tried naming other guys who had 2+ all stars on their team to prove a point, but really only half your list is accurate, some of the guys you named weren't ever even all stars.

duncan, hakeem, and kobe only needed 1 or no all stars at all to help them win a chip, mad?

but a guy who takes every other
night off is not really earning
that roster slot. There's
no doubt he's a very hyphenated
version of himself due to injury
and regression.

James is not getting a lot of all-star
quality help this year. If he is injured
for any serious stretch, that will be a very
average/ordinary Miami team.

even if he wasn't voted in...at 19,4 and 5 at 54% shooting he def would get put on the reserve squad.

He's on pace to play 60 games this season. Is he any less of an all star than a guy who puts up the same numbers but misses 20 games because of one major injury?

If he played every night (or almost every night) - I would agree,
but he hasn't. Being an all-star also requires consistent performance.

Certainly not in the East this year. But obviously Paul George should start (although Wade might receive more fan votes) - but hey that's the all-star system you're referring to as razor-sharp legitimate, so....

You also said this:

What relevance does Wade's votes have with PG making the team?

Even if you wanna start cysing fan-voting, Wade would still be voted as an all-star reserve because his impact, even in limited games, is still high. Coaches know that, he wouldn't be left off.

in reply 30 you said wade was being voted in as a starter ahead of george undeservedly. he isn't. they're listed at different positions on the ballot. wade as a backcourt player, george as a frontcourt player. they're both going to start.

now you're claiming grantland is backing up your assertion that wade isn't an all star at all. they didn't say that. they said he doesn't deserve to start because he's missed some games but he obviously deserves a reserve spot because he's been the best guard in the east when he's played.

seriously, just move on. you accuse cenario of just wanting to argue dumb shit, but you can't just concede that you were wrong here. it's silly.

not so sure you are an objective observant here, but cook away.

>in reply 30 you said wade was being voted in as a starter
>ahead of george undeservedly. he isn't. they're listed at
>different positions on the ballot. wade as a backcourt player,
>george as a frontcourt player. they're both going to start.

never denied that - I asked "should Wade be starting because he's
missed 25% of the games." And yes - I acknowledged that
George was "F" on the ballot even though he's listed as a
swingman. I admittedly haven't looked at the ballots - and don't
really care to.

Only point I was making is that Wade is not the all-star D. Wade
of year's past, and there's serious questions as to if he should
be starting as an all-star having missed 25% of the games.

>now you're claiming grantland is backing up your assertion
>that wade isn't an all star at all.

wrong - GL is backing up my assertion that Wade shouldn't start -
or receive votes ahead of George.

But why am I arguing w/ OKS fraternity heads?

he's the 2nd leading vote getter in the east.

he's also a frontcourt player. wade is a guard. they'll both start.

and wade would be on the team even if he weren't voted in. his numbers are great. he's just missed some games.

have no interest in him going back to cleveland. gilbert thought he found his new bron already, let him keep all them shitty lotto picks and move on
i wouldn't mind LA cause the cap space and laker mystique would allow for a nice team to be built (bron+klove+2014 top 5 pick?)
if there are no good options allowable with this new CBA then just stay in miami
worst case is what? they don't win a title in the two seaons till bosh and wade get off the books.
two chips problems
he'll only be 30 entering the season when wade/bosh will be off the books. there's time for a full rebuild in his prime (worst case)

funny thing is, LeBron hasn't held a grudge at all. I bet
if anybody would stop him from returning, it would be Gilbert's
jilted self.

Yea. Organizationally, Miami is first-class with Arison & Riley at the helm. It will take a lot to have him leave that situation, where he knows they will have the ability, will, and wisdom to surround him with championship-level talent when Wade's tenure ends.

Huge assumption. I've never seen a city with such ineptitude running through all of it's pro teams.

>But if he returned to Cleveland -
>and won a 'chip or two - it would be an unbelievable
>sports narrative unlike any other.

I think it would have made a better story if he had won on the 1st go-'round. After the way the city acted when he left, my belief that they don't deserve a ring has been reinforced.

And other than it's pro sports, I really love the city of Cleveland.

EDIT - of the choices you listed, I'd rather have him go to LA (Lakers fan), stay with Miami, go to Cleveland and then the Knicks dead last.

I felt that way initially, but i think it would be such
a unique story of reconciliation in sports, unlike anything
ever seen before, really. But I fully realize Cleveland's
demonstrated ineptitude, and that is more than enough reason
to keep James away.

i can't even imagine the agenda-revision that would have
to take place between Kobestan & Lebronenon.

How would that play out, though. It'd be one thing
if they joined up when both were in their respective primes (around 2008) - but now? Could Kobe accept not being *the* man at this
point?

As far as Kobe...I honestly think he can let someone else be the "the man" if he deems that player to be worthy of that respect. Lebron is obviously worthy w the hard work and dedication that he puts in day in and day out, and the two are pretty decent friends as well.

Any talk of him going elsewhere is hypothetical,

interest, for obvious reasons.

Despite what many think, it's not a foregone conclusion

there, outside of Kyrie, Cleveland has botched all those draft picks plus I'm not sure if the relationship with Gilbert can ever be fully repair. I don't see him wanting to go LA, Kobe is an older version of Wade.

wouldn't be surprised to see Irving join him in 2016

until then him and Bosh going to still have Miami in the thick of things

there issue now is with the constant lineup changes

there's no consistency in the rotations at all

I think they should sit Wade till mid March

Yup. I've watched almost every Miami game this year,
and there is no fluidity to their substitution patterns/
rotations. Beasley plays every other game, Wade plays
every other game - Battier/Chalmers sits - Cole plays
inconsistently. LeBron & Bosh have really been the
only constants this year, and that does not bode well
if it continues like this into April.

I think now is the time to give Oden burn and see
exactly how hard he can go. But it's not encouraging
to see Miami basically experimenting every night
while other elite teams are set in their rotations
and only gaining more chemistry.

He'll have a PG who can run with him. A center who when healthy may be nasty on D, and two potential great talents in the 1st round by next year who may be a joy to play with. And a coach who given enough talent could guide a formidable squad into really balling.

Philly is the place to be Lebron. Just Accept It. \( v_v )/

Read into this however you want. I think Lebron stays in Miami, and gets other stars to come play for/with him.

LeBron James says he doesn't 'want to go back to cold winters'
By Royce Young | NBA writer
September 26, 2013 3:48 pm ET

If you were hoping your city was going to land LeBron James, you better be in a warm weather climate.
Because he's not going to retire somewhere cold.

What? What did you think I was talking about?

“I miss the slower pace back home but have grown used to my new city's little perks like fresh fish and sweet fruit,” LeBron told Men's Week, speaking about a retirement destination. “It will definitely be someplace warm. I don't want to go back to cold winters.”

Now... you could read into that as something more than retirement. Because if he doesn't want to retire in the cold, why would he want to play in the cold either? He's already been there and done that with his time in Cleveland, and he seems to have really embraced the warmth of Miami.

So, start your speculation engines, Lakers fans.

if you've got money there is no better place to live in the continental US than south Florida IMO.

A team would have to have an amazing situation to lure Lebron out of Miami and honestly I don't see that anywhere.

NBA players are on the road for most of the season. And most have summer homes (Derrick Rose lives in LA).

Its different if you've grown up and lived in a cold weather city your entire life and are used to it. But if you move to a warm weather climate for a few years then have to go back to dealing with below freezing temperatures and knee deep snow? It sucks, I did it. When I left military active duty I was stationed in SoCal and the plan was to stay there but for personal/family reasons I ended up moving back to STL and it took me a few years to adjust to dealing with a real winter every year and even though I've been back a while now I still hate it, lol.

they're still at home half the time and flying out of FL or CA somewhere and and coming back to single digit temperatures not fun plus the hassle of just getting around back and forth to games/practice/the airport can be a hassle. Most guys that play in LA or Miami don't have a "summer home" so that's one less expense also, lol.

I think most guys would rather play in a cold weather city on a good team rather than a shitty team in a warm weather city but if all things are equal are even close most are going to choose the warm weather city

plus its a shit team with the same coach he supposedly left because of. There's literally no incentive for him to go back to the Cavs. I think he likes to "visit" Ohio but has no intention of moving back there permanently. The "Return to Cleveland" would be a great narrative but he's staying in Miami. Its a great city, a great organization, a great young coach, guys lining up to come play there for the cheap, its a no-brainer.

Overall I agree. However, I think it would be
a different story if Cleveland had drafted well,
and built more pieces there. If they were a legit
playoff team right now, I think it would be more
appealing to James, but organizationally it's inept,
and after getting a taste of world-class organizational
aptitude in Miami w/ Riley & Arison, it would be a stretch
for him to go back to Gilbert.

I will say this, though. LeBron's body language is different
this year, and I think it's because he's having to put
heavy mileage on himself this year, carrying the team night
in and night out like he did in Cleveland. So as sound as
Miami is organizationally, there are some challenges with
the remaining salary after bosh/wade/kang eat up their
contracts. Bosh is good, but too expensive as now a
glorified spot-up shooter. Wade is obviously great, but
not so much as of late. Regardless of how many people
want to play there, there is only so much they can do
with those 3 salaries. If Oden pans out and Beasley
proves productive in the post-season, Miami will look
like geniuses again organizationally.

He's just learning the same thing every champion learns, the only thing harder than getting on top is staying on top.

Bottom line, for the reasons you outlined in your first paragraph I don't see him going back to Cleveland. And I don't see any other team out there with the assets and financial flexibility to present something that will be more appealing than Miami. Wade and Bosh's contracts will be off the books either this off-season or the next. Its possible they could re-sign Bosh for a cheaper price. Wade may be willing to give them a deep discount to finish his career in Miami.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

"it would be a different story if Cleveland drafted well."

Well, they did draft well -- *very* well. As well as you can
draft - by securing Wiggins w/ the #1 pick. Thus, it *is*
a different story as I stated it would be in #97.

If the Cavs didn't get the #1 pick again, and get Wiggins, I think
it would be far more probable that Bron would've signed a 1 year extension/option with Miami and waited it out. It's clear now that
he always intended to return to Cleveland (probably as soon as he won his 1st title, he was already thinking about a Renaissance in Cleveland) - but he just didn't quite know when the right time was.

Now is the perfect time.
