"Young Dolphins player nearly broke after paying 4 teammates"

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24181547/report-young-dolphins-player-nearly-broke-paying-for-teammates

Whether tackle Jonathan Martin was the victim of bullying isn't the only issue affecting the Dolphins. The Miami Herald's Adam Beasley tweeted Sunday that one young defensive player has nearly gone broke because he's been pressured to pay for older players.

Beasley adds: "When I talked about anger, dysfunction last week, this is what I was referring to. This issue extends far beyond the Martin situation."

Not helping. This tweet from Dolphins defensive lineman Jared Odrick:

Well that was awkward.

Apparently, this isn't an isolated incident. According to ESPN.com, one of the allegations being reviewed in the Martin case is that, last summer, guard Richie Incognito got Martin to contribue $15,000 to help finance a trip to Las Vegas by several Dolphins players -- even though Martin opted not to travel with the group. Instead, Martin allegedly gave Incognito the $15,000 because he feared the consquences of what might happen if he didn't.

It's worth noting that the NFLPA isn't investigating Incognito for bullying, and Incognito took to Twitter Sunday morning to implore ESPN to "stop slandering my name."

Look, making rookies pay the tab is nothing new in the NFL, but when players are being pressured to do it to the point where they're nearly broke then that's a problem. One exacerbated by the Martin saga, which doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon.

Two days ago, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, reading from a statement, offered this on the Martin situation.

"I'm aware of this report, and I can say without question that we emphasize a culture of team first, accountability and respect for one another. Any behavior that deviates from that is inconsistent with the values of our organization. This is something that we take very seriously. It will not be tolerated."

If the latest report is true it's fair to wonder if Philbin is out of touch with what's really going on with his team.

you kinda have to be an asshole/criminal.

It sounds like the villainous antagonist on an episode of "Hunter"

and within two years he was unceremoniously excused from the team. He unregistered himself from the school but no one on the team wanted him around. He was suspended like six times for various reasons - mostly bar fights and alcohol use - and Solich tried to kick him off the team before the 2003 season even started.

But he was just one of those guys you'd try to take a flyer on.

I was even more amazed he got drafted, let alone in the 3rd round. But that was the allure of his talent. I'd be completely unsurprised if he had some Hernandez/Newton-like dirt lying around in the shadows right now.

except he didn't seem cool, ever.

I fully expect that he has multiple felonies in his back pocket and has happened to get lucky during his career.

Using Hernandez' name was extreme, but I truly hate this guy and the fact he's associated with the Husker name.

I had the same reaction he did initially. I held my tongue, because I figured there had to be more to the story. But my first reaction upon hearing a grown man complain about bullying was something like Truth's or what RBO says above: stop being a punk and go at this dude.

i don't know if martin wanted to minimize it or if he's justyoung and this is his vocab. but to be honest, when i heard bullying, i kind of thought this was just martin being sensitive. it's clearly more than that, it's reprehensible behavior from incognito.

hazing and checkin the rookies within reason is a part of the game...

but owing cats all this money..and fukkin Incognito leaving messages and shit with racist language...that shit is super over the top...

there is obviously a lack of leadership with this locker room, where things are being allowed that should not be allowed..

and honestly....if I'm the owner of the Dolphins...I'm showing the Head Coach the door after this season because it's obvious that he cannot facilitate the appropriate environment...

teams where this type of shit goes on do not win.....they can't.

the right culture on your team from top to bottom....

and yeah..the GM has got to be accountable for this too...

See...I wondered..even recently....how Incognito was doing because he was such a fukkin moron on the Rams...I was surprised he seemingly turned that around....But now I see he was just on a team with no fukikin accountability over this type of behavior..so he could go under the radar with this.

here's what I think may have happened.... I think the GM and the coach saw Incognito as a Goon..and gave certain shit a pass thinking it was adding toughness..... just for having that fukkin mentality from the GM down everybody needs to be fired.

Take Steve Smith for an example....How many times has Steve beat up teammates....more than once. But outside of that have you ever heard anyone say he was a bad teammate..or that he was detrimental to winning?? Never. Because it's one thing to have a conflict with a guy on your team..it's another to go out of your way to harass a guy over a couple of years like this.

the only difference is the what's being extorted (large sums of money vs. pittances) and the cultural status of the bulliers and bullied.

it's the exact same thing. and we should appreciate that "bullying" (extorting and harrassing) of adolescents seems "harmless" or the pussification of america or whatever only because them kids don't have access to money or power...yet.

maybe confront dude in the locker room and pray to god some one steps in and helps u lol, iono

edit: damn just saw the victim pic. yea he look like a fat neck soft ass key and peele ass nigga
hope he bounces back from this as far as getting respect in the locker room

and too....once you've reached a certain point..you can't handle confrontation the same way as you did before...

something tells me that the locker room environment didn't make Martin feel comfortable that he could have confronted Incognito and others would have had his back....To me THAT is the larger issue.

if this shit happened on another team...you for sure would have guys you could point to who would have "regulated".... not sure who would do that on the Dolphins...

and Incognito purposely picked a guy who he knew wouldn't put the paws on him..or pull a strap on him.....because he knows he'd get punked had he did that....

same reason why the only person in the rams locker room he got tough with was the coach at the time...he wasn't about to say shit to a player who had some street in him...

Incognito physically is actually the more mild response to this...

putting a gun in his mouth and having him strip butt-naked is a route that a lot of other people would have taken....

either way though... this should not have been Martin's issue to deal with at all...and certainly not as a 2nd year player....

If he's not a fighter....and if the locker room was condoning this...and if the veteran players...black or white...didn't have the balls to stop shit like this from happening.... him stepping to Incognito wouldn't do anything but have him get seriously hurt....and what would that prove??? It would possible end his ability to take care of his family...

as far as respect?? This locker room didn't not have respect for themselves to allow this to happen.... if they don't respect themselves, they not gonna respect 1 guy.

if you do it right you don't even have to raise your voice
who knows what the sequence of events were that showed incognito that martin wouldn't stand up for himself
somewhere along the line he had the opportunity to nip the shit in the bud, like all the other non bullied players on the team, and he didn't
it is what it is
as far as the organization allowing it to happen
meh, they have a code of conduct and have acted
beyond that you're prolly on your own until it escalates to the level that this did

Just catch him off guard and beat the shit out of him.

He gets fined, so what? I mean, he was already coughing up money to Incognito anyway.

And once he whupped his ass, all of the reasons for it would come out anyway so Martin would only look bad until the full story came out.

Dude, there wasn't a single Pro-Riley Eagle fan in this place. I'm pretty sure most people said to just straight cut the guy.

Plus on the piece-of-shit-ometer a single racial epithet thrown by a drunken idiot at a stranger kind of pales in comparison to continuous extortion and threatening of your teammate.

doesn't matter if you beat women, are a raging racist or torture animals.

it's embarrassing as a fan.

If Aaron Hernandez gets off (which is possible because Murder 1 is a tough charge to prove) he'll be playing as soon as any suspension is over.

I'm trying to think of a *good* player who had big enough off-field issues that he was blacklisted from the league in his prime.

I can't think of any.

guess this answers the question as to why no other teammates confronted him..

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000276773/article/richie-incognito-has-support-in-dolphins-locker-room

The Miami Dolphins acted swiftly in their handling of Richie Incognito on Sunday, suspending the veteran guard indefinitely for his role in Jonathan Martin's absence from the team.

It's a nightmare situation for the Dolphins, who are dealing with a complicated and delicate personnel matter smack in the middle of the regular season. NFL Media's Jeff Darlington asked players about the situation during a visit to the Miami locker room Monday.

"I know both of those guys personally. I like both of them," said wide receiver Mike Wallace, who added he doesn't believe the team's pranks and hazing went too far. "I love Richie. I think he's a great guy. I don't think he was out of hand. I have a lot of respect for Richie. I wish he was here."

Cornerback Will Davis was similarly complimentary of Incognito, though he added he's unsure of the relationship between Incognito and Martin.

NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Monday that Martin shared highly inappropriate texts and voicemails from Incognito with his parents Saturday, and turned them over Sunday to the Dolphins and the league, according to sources close to Martin and involved in the investigation.

"He's a funny guy," Davis said of Incognito. "Everybody loves him."

Defensive end Cameron Wake offered a more guarded response.

"You'd have to ask every guy individually," Wake said. "I can't speak for everyone else."

Incognito lost his organization's support Sunday night, but he appears to have teammates in his corner. It remains to be seen if it stays that way.

Wake's comments were measured and serious. Wallace was up there
joking around and giving Incognito unconditional support

Wake said he personally didn't have any issues with dude, but that
he couldn't speak for anyone else

Wallace said everybody was cool with Incognito--and hinted that any hazing
Martin experienced was his own fault when Wallace replied "Mike don't play that"
after being asked if he was hazed as a rookie

In response to Reply # 0

in the nfl the best don't always play. and a 2nd rounder is no lock.

especially in a position group like "OL" there's a lot of shit about cohesion and unity, chemistry, etc.

as a rookie, when shit ain't guaranteed, and you're trying to learn the ropes, 'fitting in', can be the difference between the older guys taking you under their wing and showing you how to do shit vs. you being shunned and left to fend for dolo, which makes it harder to stick on a roster.

unless you are just an incredible talent, and that talent is obvious to everyone watching you, you have a huge dependency on 'fitting in', and a lot of pressure to conform.

if the unofficial 'consensus' around the locker room is that you are 'soft' or 'aloof' or 'not a team player', position coaches, and coordinators are taking that into account.

THAT's the backdrop to this shit. 2nd rounder is high, but these cats ain't making millionS with an s. they trying to get established and last long enough to hit that second contract. if he busts incognito upside the dome w/ a 45lb barbell, that MIGHT be frowned upon, or they may say way to go.

this shit is just as dumb as frat culture (beat my ass for 8 wks so i can call you brother for life? fuck that shit in its entirety). but many ppl do the math and it's worth it. what's more fucked up here, though, is that this isn't just some social club. this is his 9-5, and his ability to cope w/ this bullshit withOUT seeming like a pussy can determine whether he is set for life, or looking to sell cars or insurance in 2 yrs.

unfortunately, all this type of stuff is a distortion of real life skills and needs. you DO need to be able to demonstrate that you can work with others, adapt to some levels of psychological pressures and stress and still perform, navigate through difficult social settings, prove your worth, blah blah blah. but this 'it was done to me' mentality takes stuff to such stupid extremes that any semblance of benefit is way outweighed by the bullshit.

i'm echoing some of the other cats who point the fingers at the other vet players, as well as coaches and brass. this was some fuckery all the way around. and if dude DID have some depression / suicide attempts? this way beyond fucked up. like, unspeakably fucked up.

when i played football in college, when i was a freshman, at the end of training camp / 2 a days, we had to get up and sing on the tables in training table. part of that's my personality, i was like, fuckit, went on second, rapped, kilt shit, and got props from the older cats.

but that was the extent of our 'hazing'.

class after mine, cats was duct taping them to poles in the middle of the quad in they draws, and pouring baby powder and shaving cream on 'em.

i'm looking at them like wtf? my class just ain't go for that shit. we'd be fighting.

peace & blessings,

x.

the difference between making freshman sing, giving people dumb haircuts (vs shaving fucking penises into their hair), or leaving racist voicemails on their phone, harassing them in a public forum (twitter) or goddamn extortion.

Hazing would be a hard thing to eradicate. The hard part is allowing a little of it but not letting it go too far.

But it's everyone's job to make sure it doesn't go too far.

Like the coach, GM, pres and owner.

Mgmt needs to take some fucking responsibility beyond simple sound bites.

Also, as Will alluded to: anyone who employes Richie Incognito bears a lot of responsibility for whatever terrible shit happens when he's on your team.

That's like signing Pacman Jones and then acting shocked when somebody's bodyguard shoots up a club.

behavior, all that bullshit.

these folks job responsibilities are a combination of warrior/gladiator and PR representative.

if you holding symposia on 'don't call women bitches on twitter', and 'don't pull your dick out on mains street and piss on the center line when you go back to your bumfuck hometown during the offseason', 'don't go all Al Sexual Harris on female reporters', 'don't put bong flicks on fb', and shit like that, i damn sho expect them to also set some parameters around what constitutes 'hazing' or 'razzing'.

but ireland is their GM, right? the one who was asking potential draft picks straight up if their moms sucked dick for crack?

philbin is a new coach trying to win a locker room. sometimes you kinda know shit but don't WANNA know shit. but this 2013. you GOTTA know. but the FO is equally complicit, and even moreso, prolly, because they were holdovers. they should have made it crystal clear from jump to the incoming coaching staff which parts of dolphins' 'culture' were subject to change and which were immutable. and they also should have been responsible for shit that was carryover from the last regime. they fumbled like shit.

depending upon discovery, i'd give philbin another chance (it's his first year? if not, peace). ireland and them clowns should be gone, tho.

if this dude offed himself and it turned out that the TEAM was a big part or the major part of his issues? fuck your ticket sales and q ratings for a decade. (not saying that's remotely as important as a wasted life, but that's the terms in which owners think).

or at least did until yesterday, so anyone still suggesting "just fight him" doesn't get it (after the voicemail story i've heard this more in conversation than on here). a young guy starting a fight with a vet over something that's been accepted as team culture? that guy has a high chance of getting cut, regardless of the circumstances.

are now commentators .... the perplexing look on their faces when they talk about how this type of thing could have been allowed to continue by the veterans in the locker room....

I'm sure more is going to come out...and maybe Martin was looked at as "soft" by some...but the guy started 16 games as a rookie...and they made him their LEFT TACKLE...which is one of the 3 most important positions on a team....

Something tells me this isn't about a young player not being able to hack the usual "hazing" or traditions that a young player must go through.... I think what was going sounds like it was waaaay out of the norm..

the amount of money the young players had to pay is just outrageous.... it was really like extortion...

and that's why i cast the side-eye at the ppl claiming this is just football or is part of the game and whatnot. i get that hazing happens even in the pros but not like this. and if it does maybe it's time to take a good hard look at hazing among the pros. there are other means to achieve the same ends. i agree that the 'it was done to me' argument is flimsy and can't support the continuance of the sort of hazing rituals that leave pros in serious debt and challenge their mental or physical health.

fuck you.

Yeah, if this is true, lots of people are getting fired.

http://touch.sun-sentinel.com/#section/1204/article/p2p-78065907/

Sources: Dolphins coaches asked Incognito to toughen up Martin

5:17 pm, November 5, 2013

Miami Dolphins coaches asked player Richie Incognito, who was the offensive line's undisputed leader, to toughen up teammate Jonathan Martin after he missed a voluntary workout last spring, at least two sources told the Sun Sentinel.

The sources told the paper they believe that Incognito, who is accused of using racially incendiary language and bullying tactics against Martin, may have taken those orders too far.

It's not clear whether those marching orders will now become part of a pending investigation by the NFL into the Dolphins' locker room culture, and the alleged bullying that took place between Incognito and Martin.

"I'm just trying to weather the storm right now. This will pass," Incognito told WSVN-TV when reached outside a doctor's office.

Incognito has been suspended indefinitely by the Dolphins for conduct detrimental to the team for his tactics involving Martin, the team's 2012 second-round pick, who left the team last week and later accused the Dolphins of having an unsafe working environment.

Martin's smoking gun is a threatening, and racially offensive voice mail Incognito left him in April. In that voice message Incognito calls Martin, who is bi-racial, a "half n-----," threatened to slap his mother across the face, and uttered the words "I'll kill you."

Sources say that communication took place when Martin skipped two days of the team's OTA program, and Incognito was encouraged by his coaches to make a call that would "get him into the fold," one source said.

Even though OTA workouts are voluntary, the NFL culture forces coaches to strong arm the team's leaders to make sure everyone attends. Sources say Incognito was doing his job, but they admit he crossed the line.

"Richie is the type of guy where if he's on your team you love him," a teammate said. "If he's not on your team, you hate him. Every team needs a guy like that."

A Dolphins spokesman declined comment when told about Incognito's directives from the coaching staff, saying the franchise is fully cooperating with the NFL's independent investigation, which was requested by owner Steve Ross.

It is clear Incognito embraced his role as the team's enforcer and tough guy, his teammates said. However, nobody knew how troubling his relationship was with Martin, who started 10 straight games next to Incognito going back to the 2012 season, those same teammates added.

Martin abruptly left the team last week after a lunch room prank orchestrated by his fellow offensive lineman caused his emotional distress, and forced him to return to his California hometown, where he's receiving treatment.

The NFL Player's Association released a statement Tuesday saying it will monitor the NFL's investigation to ensure all the players the union represents, which includes Incognito, get a "fair investigation."

"We expect that the NFL and its clubs create a safe and professional workplace for all players and that owners, executives, coaches and players should set the best standards and examples," the statement read. "It is the duty of this union to hold the clubs and teams accountable for safety and professionalism in the workplace."

During Martin's rookie season he was nicknamed "Big Weirdo" by his teammates, and was forced to sport an embarrassing haircut given to him by the offensive linemen. He also forked over $15,000 for a veterans trip to Las Vegas he didn't attend.

The Dolphins traditionally hold rite of passage rituals for its rookies, and some of the team's antics which included ridiculous haircuts, hair dyeing, and elaborate dinners paid for by the rookies could be considered hazing. Those would make them a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Sources say players were annually directed by coach Joe Philbin to "cut out" the rookie hazing. Philbin comes from a Green Bay Packers culture where rookie hazing is minimal, or at least subtle. While Philbin tried to rein it in with the Dolphins, he and his coaching staff never policed it when the team was dyeing and shaving heads for the second straight training camp.

However, Philbin did insist that the rookies got decent haircuts before the team's first exhibition game, but that was after weeks of them sporting their embarrassing looks.

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe indicated that Martin should have come to the leadership council with his problems, which apparently carried over to his second season. The problem is Incognito was also on the leadership council, and possessed a tremendous amount of power and influence.

That might explains why Martin hid his issues with Incognito, and on occasion hung around with him in South Florida, and during road trips. It is possible Martin felt he had to do so to feel accepted.

According to ESPN, Martin told former Stanford teammate Zach Ertz he planned to continue playing football. The Dolphins have kept him on the team's 53-man roster, and players have gone out their way to make sure he knows he's welcomed back.

I also hate to agree with Antrelle Rolle, but shit both Martin and Incognito need to be off the team.

Martin for being a bitch. And Incognito for being weird & doing way too much.

Martin would have never MADE it to the NFL if he were a "bitch." Having emotional/mental difficulties that have had you contemplate or attempt suicide and having that exploited does not make you a bitch. It makes you a lonely lonely man on a burning island, which thankfully, he caught a life raft off of.

By all accounts, Incognito was trying to bait Martin into a fight. Martin understood that no matter the outcome of a fight, shit wouldn't change.

This is the NFL...cats could have 3 year deals and get cut
And if this asshole Incognito was liked by everyone, there would've been very little Martin could've done

He went the non-violent route, and I respect that immensely. Some other cats that've reached their boiling points could've just snapped, brought in a glock and that would've been bye bye Richie

To say Martin handled this wrong is insane

Or are the going to keep fucking with him even more? Clearly, he gave them the money, and Incognito kept fucking with him. Then he was even told by the team to continue to fuck with him. Dude was fucked no matter what.

You think Martin wants to roll the dice with him someone like that? Particularly when it sounds like the rest of the locker-room doesn't have his back.

Are you being obtuse on purpose? The reason they're bad options is due to the outcome! Yes the harassment stops but there is typically a heavy price to pay - emotionally, professionally, and financially.

>Not telling anyone on the team.
the team that voted your bullier/harrasser to a leadership council!??!?

>Not standing up for yourself.
how? how exactly was he supposed to do that?

>Not going to the authorities.
the authorities who clearly condone this behavior? what would happen? Even if they weren't orchestrating this shit, let's say Martin goes to Philbin and Philbin does something to Incognito (a guy people claim is a favored teammate and IS ON THE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL). It's not gonna be hard to be found out and now you're the snitch who brought the coach in on some peer interactions. Good luck staying in a non-hostile work environment then. lol.

>Those are all bad options that Martin exercised.
yep. all terrible options.

yea that's the interesting part of this whole intellectual narrative
like damn dude was raised by two harvard lawyers
yet couldn't figure out how to talk his way out of basic meathead behavior?
or at the very least raise awareness and position himself such that a billion dollar organization was going have to make some HR decisions before it reached this point
obviously ppl are trying to figure out and rationalize how this happened to a grown man
and that angle seems to be the conclusion
but it seems like dude was more naive than above it all
and had no clue had to handle the situation
bruh was falling for middle school lunch room pranks, cmon

but it's just extreme
no one is suggesting martin should have stabbed dude in the neck with his spork or nutin
but damn at least tell SOMEBODY so at the very least when u go awol you can hit the nfl/team up with that lawsuit or something
YES, explicitly tell the "leadership council" regardless of their reaction so all this shit is on record
ike reese pointed out how incognito had pictures with him and martin "hanging out" all over his twitter
the team at large may have known about the basic hazing like the haircut etc
but the wierd shit may have really not been known
the idea that black teammates knew about the racial slurs and didn't say shit for the sake of hazing didn't really make sense
alot of ppl probably didn't know the full extent, martin literally had nothing to lose by talking if the alternative was quitting his career

there's only 31 other places in the country he can do that job, and his reputation will probably follow him so getting another job might not be possible. also add in the fact that the team and front office support incognito and this culture, how is simply standing up to him a legitimate option? of course he felt trapped.

192. "Dolphins players considered Incognito an honorary brother (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

and Martin is a cornball brother. they also like Incognito more in general

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2013/11/richie-incognito-considered-black-in-dolphins-locker-room.html

One of the most curious aspects of the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin story is how race has become very much a part of it outside the Dolphins locker room -- in the media and among fans and observers -- but not at all so far within the Dolphins locker room.

Think of this:

Richie Incognito left Jonathan Martin a voice mail that, among other things, called Martin a "half-n----r." And Dolphins players of color, knowing of the voicemail, have expressed no problems with Incognito.

"I don't have a problem with Richie," Mike Wallace said. "I love Richie."

"I don't think Richie is a racist," cornerback Brent Grimes said.

"Richie Incognito isn't a racist," tight end Michael Egnew said.

ESPN analyst and former Dolphins wide receiver Cris Carter has know Mike Pouncey since the player's childhood. Today Carter said on air he recently spoke to Mike Pouncey and the center, who is Incognito's friend, addressed race.

"They don't feel as if he's a racist, they don't feel as if he picked on Jonathan repeatedly and bullied him, but if they could do it all over again there would be situations that they might change but theyre very, very comfortable with Richie, Carter said.

They think its sad, not only that Jonathans not on the football team, but also that Richie is being depicted as a bigot and as a racist.

How is this possible?

Well, I've spoken to multiple people today about this and the explanation from all of them is that in the Dolphins locker room, Richie Incognito was considered a black guy. He was accepted by the black players. He was an honorary black man.

And Jonathan Martin, who is bi-racial, was not. Indeed, Martin was considered less black than Incognito.

"Richie is honarary," one player who left the Dolphins this offseason told me today. "I don't expect you to understand because you're not black. But being a black guy, being a brother is more than just about skin color. It's about how you carry yourself. How you play. Where you come from. What you've experienced. A lot of things."

Another former Dolphins employee told me Martin is considered "soft" by his teammates and that's a reason he's not readily accepted by some of the players, particularly the black players. His background -- Stanford educated and the son of highly educated people -- was not necessarily seen as a strength or a positive by some players and it perpetuated in the way Martin carried himself.

And so -- agree with it or not, comprehend it or not -- this is a reason the Dolphins haven't turned on Incognito as a racist.

From my experience, you "adopt" a white cat like that, he may feel comfortable doing that stuff outside of your group.

Went to a wedding for my boy in Ohio few years back. A friend of mine and I drove up from Chicago and I got a text from the best man (who I was staying with). He asked if we were hungry. I replied back yeah, "What do you guys have to eat?" He came back with...

"Collard greens, friend chicken, grits. You know all that stuff you people eat."

I didn't reply back, mainly cause I didn't believe what I was reading.

He sent another one, just as bad. I didn't reply.

We get to his house hours later and he approaches me, looking like he'd seen a ghost. I look at him like, "What is with these texts?"

"Dude, I know. I'm SO sorry. I'm not like that. It's just...me and my army brothers joke like that all the time. So I thought it'd be cool. They always found it funny."

I had to explain to him that WE HAD never joked like that. He shouldn't assume that because he could joke like that with his army brothers meant he could do the same with me. So reading this story with the Dolphins kinda reminds me of that. When you joke and adopt a white guy and allow him to do certain things, there's a chance he will take that "joke" past your group.

1. You shouldn't joke with him like that in the first place. But if you do and he takes it outside of the group...
2. You GOTTA check him.

@HubbuchNYP: Hartline is outraged because he says Martin was passing the voicemail around earlier in the year and laughing about it.

mo tweets

@TheMattyI 1m

Per Sun-Sentinel, Clabo said, "I don't know why is doing this. And the only person who knows why is ."

@AbramsonPBP now

Hartline said at one time the voice mail was a joke in the locker room and he believes Martin was one laughing about it

@JeffDarlington 8m

In reference to the prank that occurred before Martin left team, Tannehill says the team played the same prank on Tannehill multiple times.

@AbramsonPBP now

Hartline says if coaches asked Incogntio to toughen up Martin why would they pick a bully racist to do the job?

‏@CourtneyNBC6 now

OL Tyson Clabo: "If Jon Martin had a problem, you say 'Hey, I have a problem with this. Stand up and be a man."

this sh*t is weird

response after edit:

ok. so players knew about the voicemail and texts months ago?

this puts even more responsibility on the Dolphins locker room.
you're telling me that numerous people heard that voicemail and
didn't say SH*T!?!? lol.

whether you're on Martin's side or not, a lot of dudes on that team
are cornballs for letting that ride

In response to Reply # 233

The worst thing you can be labeled in sports is a quitter. The Dolphins look at Martin as a quitter so of course they're not going to come to his aid.

Incognito, didn't quit. They know no matter how crazy his ass is, he will not quit.

Thus, they'd rather go to bat with Incognito who they know won't quit, than Martin who they don't trust.

In response to Reply # 0

Martin would be nearing the full blown "bad guy" in this saga... but Incognito already having a d-bag rep and dropping that N Bomb will keep this even...

http://mmqb.si.com/2013/11/07/richie-incognito-jonathan-martin-dolphins-lydon-murtha/

I dont have a dog in this fight.

I want that to be very clear. I played offensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins from 2009 until the 2012 preseason, when I was released after tearing ligaments in my foot and injuring my back, both requiring surgery. I have since retired, and Im happily working in the auto industry and living outside of Miami. I went to college at Nebraska with Richie Incognito, and I consider myself friends with him and Jonathan Martin, but I dont speak with them regularly and Im not taking sides. Im only interested in the truth, which is what Im going to share, from my own experiences and from conversations with friends still on the team.

Before I correct some of the misconceptions and outright lies being reported in the course of this story, lets first establish who Martin and Incognito are as human beings and their relationship with one another.

From the beginning, when he was drafted in April 2012, Martin did not seem to want to be one of the group. He came off as standoffish and shy to the rest of the offensive linemen. He couldnt look anyone in the eye, which was puzzling for a football player at this level on a team full of grown-ass men. We all asked the same question: Why wont he be open with us? Whats with the wall being put up? I never really figured it out. He did something Id never seen before by balking at the idea of paying for a rookie dinner, which is a meal for a position group paid for by rookies. (For example, I paid $9,600 for one my rookie year.) I dont know if Martin ever ended up paying for one, as I was cut before seeing the outcome.

Martin was expected to play left tackle beside Incognito at guard from the start, so Incognito took him under his wing. They were close friends by all apperances. Martin had a tendency to tank when things would get difficult in practice, and Incognito would lift him up. Hed say, theres always tomorrow. Richie has been more kind to Martin than any other player.

In other situations, when Martin wasnt showing effort, Richie would give him a lot of crap. He was a leader on the team, and he would get in your face if you were unprepared or playing poorly. The crap he would give Martin was no more than he gave anyone else, including me. Other players said the same things Incognito said to Martin, so youd need to suspend the whole team if you suspend Incognito.

Which brings me to my first point: I dont believe Richie Incognito bullied Jonathan Martin. I never saw Martin singled out, excluded from anything, or treated any differently than the rest of us. Wed have dinners and the occasional night out, and everyone was invited. He was never told he cant be a part of this. It was the exact opposite. But when he came out, he was very standoffish. Thats why the coaches told the leaders, bring him out of his shell. Figure him out a little bit.

Thats where Incognito ran into a problem. Personally, I know when a guy cant handle razzing. You can tell that some guys just arent built for it. Incognito doesnt have that filter. He was the jokester on the team, and he joked with everybody from players to coaches. That voicemail he sent came from a place of humor, but where he really screwed up was using the N-word. That, I cannot condone, and its probably the biggest reason hes not with the team right now. Odd thing is, Ive heard Incognito call Martin the same thing to his face in meetings and all Martin did was laugh. Many more worse things were said about others in the room from all different parties. Its an Animal House. Now Incognitos being slandered as a racist and a bigot, and unfortunately thats never going to be wiped clean because of all the wrong hes done people in his past. But if you really know who Richie is, hes a really good, kind man and far from a racist.

In my experience, hes not the kind of person who would extort someone for $15,000. The notion that Martin was forced to pay for a trip he didnt attend has been misrepresented.

Playing football is a mans job, and if theres any weak link, it gets weeded out. Its the leaders job on the team to take care of it.
Every year, as tradition, the offensive line goes on a big Vegas trip. Everything is paid for in advance, from hotels to a private jet to show tickets. Martin originally verbally committed to the trip, then later backed out after everything was booked. Now, if you cant go because of an emergency then its okay, but to say youre going and then decide you dont want to spend the money later? Everything was paid for, and then when it was time to pay up he didnt want to go anymore. You dont do that to your brothers. The veterans who paid for it, including Incognito and others, asked for Martins share, and he gave it to them. End of story.

The silliest part of this story, to me, is the incident at the cafeteria, in which Martin was supposed to have been hazed when everyone got up from their seats as he sat down. Whoever leaked that story failed to share that getting up from a packed lunch table when one lineman sits down is a running gag that has been around for years. It happened to me more than once, and it happened to Martin because guys on the team say he was overcoming an illness. Just like when a guy is hurt, the joke is, I dont want to sit with you, youve got the bug. Perhaps for Martin it was the straw that broke the camels back, but when Incognito reached him after he stormed out, Martin told him the departure had nothing to do with Incognito. Martin said it was something else. Then the media onslaught began.

Incognito was made a scapegoat for the hell coming down on the Dolphins organization, which in turn said it knew nothing about any so-called hazing. Thats the most outlandish lie of this whole thing. The coaches know everything. The coaches know whos getting picked on and in many cases call for that player to be singled out. Any type of denial on that side is ridiculous. I have friends on more than a dozen teams, and its the same everywhere. What people want to call bullying is something that is never going away from football. This is a game of high testosterone, with men hammering their bodies on a daily basis. You are taught to be an aggressive person, and you typically do not make it to the NFL if you are a passive person. There are a few, but its very hard. Playing football is a mans job, and if theres any weak link, it gets weeded out. Its the leaders job on the team to take care of it.

Ryan Tannehill and Lydon Murtha (Charles Trainor Jr./Getty Images)Quarterback Ryan Tannehill (17) said Wednesday that he was surprised by the bullying allegations, a sentiment shared by ex-Dolphin Lydon Murtha, seen here in a 2012 preseason game. (Charles Trainor Jr./Getty Images)
The most unfortunate thing about this situation is the consequence it will have on the careers of both men. Richies marked himself now as a racist and a bigot, and unfortunately that could be the end of it. Martin is on the opposite end of the spectrum, but no more likely than Incognito to return to the NFL if he wants. In going to the media with his problem, Martin broke the code, and it shows that hes not there for his teammates and hes not standing up for himself. There might be a team that gives him a chance because hes a good person, but the players will reject him. Theyll think, If I say one thing hes going to the press. Hell never earn the respect of teammates and personnel in the NFL because he didnt take care of business the right way.

What fans should understand is that every day in the NFL there are battles between players worse than whats being portrayed. This racial slur would be a blip on the radar if everything that happens in the locker room went public. But all over the league, problems are hashed out in house. Either you talk about it or you get physical. But at the end of the day, you handle it indoors.

Bold Prediction: NFL settles this out of court. Probably as soon as before the Super Bowl. Neither Martin nor Incognito ever play another snap again.

David Cornwells statement regarding Jonathan Martin

Posted by Mike Florio on November 7, 2013, 9:02 PM EST

Jonathan Martins toughness is not at issue. Jonathan has started every game with the Miami Dolphins since he was drafted in 2012. At Stanford, he was the anchor for Jim Harbaughs smash mouth brand of football and he protected Andrew Lucks blind side.

The issue is Jonathans treatment by his teammates. Jonathan endured harassment that went far beyond the traditional locker room hazing. For the entire season-and-a-half that he was with the Dolphins, he attempted to befriend the same teammates who subjected him to the abuse with the hope that doing so would end the harassment. This is a textbook reaction of victims of bullying. Despite these efforts, the taunting continued. Beyond the well-publicized voice mail with its racial epithet, Jonathan endured a malicious physical attack on him by a teammate, and daily vulgar comments such as the quote at the bottom. These facts are not in dispute.

Eventually, Jonathan made a difficult choice. Despite his love for football, Jonathan left the Dolphins. Jonathan looks forward to getting back to playing football. In the meantime, he will cooperate fully with the NFL investigation.

Quote from teammate: We are going to run train on your sister. . . . She loves me. I am going to fk her without a condom and c in her c.
