"Coach Collins, Teach Me How to Dougie! Sixers 2012-13 Post"

If all goes well I could realistically see Miami not giving a shit about the regular season and Philly grabbing the 1 seed in the East. But this is Philly, so all is not going to go well.

Still, this is the most excited I've been about a Sixers squad since a naive 14-year-old Marky Mark convinced hisself that the Shawn Bradley, Sharone Wright, Clarence Weatherspoon frontline was gonna wreck shop. However I have to admit at this point that Andrew Bynum's knees scare the shit out of me.

We know Doug is going to have them boys playing D, I expect ET and the Damaja to take a step forward, the new wings are gonna knock down threes, and our bench is still one of the best out there. Deep run in the playoffs, Eastern Conference Finals or bust!

PS - The Knicks are still a third rate organization, about to be the also rans in their own city.

I'm done with ET.

I thought even with the bad jumper he could consistently get to the foul line area and get easy buckets. But this dude is so inconsistent with everything.

His jumping ability is laughable, which means he will always have issues finishing at the rim.

His jumpshot will never get better.

And he has an attitude as if he is dropping 30 a game.

The thing I like about the team is that they are deep the tall at the 5 and 4. So the Billy King push to get 6'7" players will help at the 3 and the 2. Unlike previous years where the 6'7" players were playing the 3 and the 4 spots. This team will get easy buckets.

Bynum's knees are the X-factor.

"hey, make this right mayne
stop at the light mayne,
my yester night thang got me hung off the night train "

It was the thing to do, and this was the time to do it. Getting bynum was a cherry on top.

Don't really care what lou willz, iggy or brand do this season. The team had maxed out with them. Been there, done that.

Excited to see what this team brings. Like the shooters.

Like what i see from thad.

Not so much for evan turner. He doesn't seem to fit, but without bynum it's hard to tell.

Would like to see 65 games out of bynum. Not panicking on that end.

Glad they're going to let the market dictate what jrue gets. i oculd see his numbers go up this year, but I don't want to mike conley him.

They'll make the playoffs. I don't think the knicks or hawks will be as good this year. This is the season to get all the players on the floor, be competitive and see what you have. If things break right they could sneak into the 2nd round. If not they bottom out as a 8th seed and we might have to sweat out a summer of convinving bynum to stay.

i haven't been hearing SHIT about the team since they got bynum locally
or on here really
i guess the eagles debacle has the local attention
still kind of surprised cause this *could* be a team that has home court round 1 if bynum is healthy and jrue and turner turn the corner

Bynum has not played yet and everyone gets a pretty even split of minutes. Nobody played more than a half.

The big thing I guess is that these new guys are shooting the ball well, Young, Richardson and Wright.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

wright and thad have been the best players on the team. jrue has been good. their record is mostly a product of their depth and making a lot of threes. evan has been awful.

One of them was that debacle in syracuse where they fielded J rich and a NBDL team. I forgot he was on the team. And 2 of them were those were the other team's feed.

They other two showed me that Wright/Thad need to be starting for real. That nick young is the new bench chucker. And evan was extended to trade next off-season. All that he cares so much and tried hard stuff is old now. He can't go 3-12 and force up bad shots trying to get his confidence.

Jrue will have better assist numbers but that will have more to do with better shooters and a low post scorer. His game still looks the same to me.

But it was the preseason and there was no bynum so we'll see how it all fits.

-I've seen every preseason game except for the Atlantic City game and the last one against the Knicks.

-The biggest shock to me is how they are knocking down their shots. I was so used to seeing them go to the jumper as a last resort and missing.

-To see the likes of Dorrell Wright, Nick Young and even Jason Richardson knock down open 3's and create off the dribble threw me for a loop.

-We won't miss Lou Willz ball handling because we got Malik Wayns.

-We filled our big man void w/Kwame (who can at least stay out of the way on offense and defend) and when Bynum comes back I am confident that he will fit right in. I can see us running a variant of the triangle offense with Lavoy and Spencer's passing abilities.

-I'm going to the game tomorrow night. Anybody else?

In response to Reply # 0

has a bunch of injuries and dead legs and shit.

Worst case scenario we improve marginally if at all in the EC standings.

Lot of variables, look at all the turnover here.

Moved our best perimeter defender and best interior defender. IMO upgraded inside though and might have enough to replace Iggy by committee. We got some shooters, too, although they are not all that consistent they are a clear upgrade.

Need a play maker for a second unit still IMO.

It's going to be a weird season but I have a lot of excitement about it. For once there is an upshot where we could *maybe* host a series for the first time since 2003.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

>Moved our best perimeter defender and best interior defender.
Our best interior defender was only good for 25 minutes per game, I think what he gave us will be easily replaced by Bynum (hopefully), Lavoy Allen, and maybe even some quality minutes out of Moultrie. I do worry about replacing Iggy a bit more than most. I think a combo of circumstances and players will end up working out.

>Need a play maker for a second unit still IMO.
I am hoping Malik Wayns can be that guy. He was impressive in pre-season, I know it meaningless but its what we have to go on at this point. If not Wayns, if the rotations are handled correctly you can run Turner as the playmaker/point with the second unit.

i wasn't of the mind that they should resign him, but he was a solid scorer and creator who took excellent care of the ball. he's vastly better than turner, who will replace him in that role.

it mostly comes down to whether jrue holiday can become a very good PG instead of an average one. he hasn't been getting to the foul line much in the preseason--which indicates he hasn't solved his biggest problem--but he's taking good care of the rock as primary ball-handler with a 3.25/1 assist to turnover ratio. that's promising.

bynum will be good, thad will be good, wright should be very useful. if jrue is good, that's four valuable players who can be on the court alongside decent bigs like hawes or lavoy. richardson is old, but maybe his slump last season was because of the toxicity in orlando. anyway, those are the dudes i think can help.

turner hurts the team every second he's on the floor, since it means wright or thad or jrue isn't out there. philly would be far better with a landry fields or a ronnie brewer -- someone who doesn't create, but defends, rebounds and shoots a high percentage on garbage buckets.

nick young will hit enough big threes to trick people into believing he's a decent basketball player. make no mistake: he's not.

best lineup:

holiday
richardson
wright
thad
bynum

or swap out wright/thad for allen, depending on need.

people are underestimating the losses of iggy, lou and elton. i see them winning about 44 games.

like Pau.....
one of the ways they sold moving iggy as a positive was the plan to put thad at SF fulltime
maybe wright is so good you have to play them both tho
i don't know if hawes is even healthy but having him and bynum on the floor same time would be a mismatch most nights
either way looks like a team with options and the ability to show different looks in a game

then the sixers should resign him. i'd love iggy back as long as he isn't the primary scoring option.

jrue
iggy
wright
thad
bynum

that team would be GOOD. in this magical imaginary world, they'd have the best center in the east, a top-three perimeter defender, an effective swing forward, a superior three-point threat and an oversized PG. it would actually be a team that made sense and was built to go against any kind of opponent.

Which is shocking since they don't care about basketball any other time. It's mostly all eagles all the time. But it seemed to pick up steam after his article on espn.

The team is going to do a video tribute so hoepfully he gets some polite applause and everybody moves on.

I think people oversell this whole angle in general, Iggy & his teams were never important enough to be a hero or a villian in this town.

I personally couldn't care less what Iguodala does from here on out but I don't wish him ill will either.

It was the most recent SI article, coupled with a response from a CSN writer, add in some cataldi hate. With the phils done too early and the eagles looking like shit, it's become an agenda of sorts for them to recruit people to let iggy know how "WE" feel about him.

Whatever he and lou willz do in the future, good for them. It was time to move on. It's mostly apathy now.

The guys who get the big applause are the hard workers, Ratliff I remember getting an appropriately big one.

I wish Iggy well, I thought he was an excellent leader by example, put in a lot of hard work, and he even took to the role on the floor. He simply was not a natural scorer when we really needed one. He does everything else to help a team win, I think he will really flourish in Denver.

overall this is a schlockfest. i have to commend the job jrue is doing controlling the flow on offense and d'ing up lawson, who is a total non-factor out there tonight.

allen and young are hustling, they look alive although i still think allen is kinda limited.

overall they are a little more alert than denver and taking better care of the ball. this team will look a LOT different with bynum IMO.

Defensively we looked good. I am a little scared about how 3-pt happy we were. Hope that trend does not continue. I certainly don't mind transition treys or taking them off of drive and kicks... but we were just jacking last night. ET really looks like a non-factor and if it continues is going to lose that starting spot to Dorell Wright.

even with richardson injured, there needs to be a way to keep turner and nick young off the floor. the sixers will never be good as long as they continue to play substantial minutes.

remember when people laughed at me for saying i'd rather start ronnie brewer than turner?

Showed what he could do in a bigger role in Utah, should have gotten more tick in other stops (namely Chicago), etc.

I wouldn't have laughed at that statement but probably disagree on Turner's "potential."

Why didn't we take Big Cuz again? And just think of the potential for debauchery and disgrace! He could have turned into a hulk-sized Vernon Maxwell with the proper bunch of local scumfucks around him.

i wasn't a huge fan of turner, but he was the consensus number two. and he's a bust. it sucks, but they need to stop pretending he's anything but a bench player.

i'm dismayed by collins' rotations. far too much turner and nick young and not enough hawes. at least wright is playing now. even though his jumper has been off, he's still a stretch forward who rebounds at a nice clip.

And Bynum is still hurt.

At least be sensible and wait til' the midpoint of the season to start making declarations.

Or not.

But this season is make or break for him.

This isn't about iggy blocking him or jodie meeks starting over him.

His game may not be a fit for this team. And the better to address that early for him and the team.

for him to be a good offensive player, he would fundamentally have to alter everything he has shown to this point. what are the odds of that happening?

his struggles this year are no different from his struggles in the preseason or his struggles last year. all the issues are the same: can't shoot, can't finish around the basket, can't get to the foul line, can't effectively score without the basketball. there's really nothing he can do on offense except be a distributor. he needs to be some place where they can let him do that.

I want Turner gone before the trade deadline. Since he was a number two pick, I'm think he holds more value as a trade assest than as an actual player. They fuck around and hold onto him for too long and his value will continue to diminish.

Nick Young will cause me to put a brick through my TV screen before this season is over.

and forcing up his shot is a bad look.

He still thinks this is OSU and that he can shoot his confidence back. He got a short jumper swatted back in his face. SMH.

It's scary too, because if his shot isn't falling he's a mess. But dougie will play him consistent mins and hope he can defend and rebound. After this year somebody in the FO needs to own the mistake and cut him loose.

I have not seen any evidence that Turner can be a plus defender. He just looks awkward, stiff, and a step slow defending the perimeter. He seems incapable of utilizing his length and strength. At this point he is just a good rebounding swing man with a shitty offensive game.

I don't think Turner even eats to that level. Iggy is a plus wing defender and doesn't get completely embarrased when guarding 3 that try and post him. Offensively Iggy is way better in transition and finishing at the basket. Plus as much as we shitted on him, he developed into a pretty good catch-and-shoot guy.

Because of his size and the fact that he can distribute Turner has a place in this league, I just don't know if its with this team.

he deserves starter minutes, whether he does or not. i prefer young next to bynum, but it should be hawes/young until that's an option. allen is doing nothing.

pleased that wright is knocking down some shots. a legit sniper who also rebounds (like ryan anderson or frye) is such a nice weapon for spreading the floor.

Wright has to start, but doug is committed to richardson and turner. I get the vet and will grind my teeth and hope turner be somewhere between the guy who played last night and tonight.

Not sure how I feel about jrue having back to back to back 7 TO games. Doug may murder him. LOL

but he was never a grinder in college, he went to the Lamont Barnes/Donald Hodge school of 'Peak As A Sophomore' T-Unit Academy.

He has already overachieved as a pro, depending on him to do anything more than he's done makes for a bad team.

I find it increasingly hard to discuss the Sixers in any kind of 'evaluating' fashion without recalling that the main reason we gutted this roster is for a dude still not cleared to run who currently looks like Eddie Murphy's SNL era.

Is this motherfucka cynical enough to sit out an entire season & then shop himself around the league for a max deal this summer knowing some poor soul will pay his ransom the same way we paid Dildo Baggins for a week of meaningless action a few years back?

I wish that sounded ridiculous to me but unfortunately I know this dude & as a result am scared shitless until further notice.

The 'German Engineering' procedure was undefeated up thru now, Kobe recommending it may have been the last lie he ever told Socks.

Andrew Bynum as your franchise player is some true luxury-car-with-shoddy-brakes-and-no-airbags shit.

I am already in full-on yelling at my TV mode and we are only 8 games in. But that shit vs the Pistons is as about as embarrasing a loss as I can remember.

At one point I was watching Royal Ivey guarding Will Bynum and was thinking WHAT THE FUCK AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE? There had to be something better I coulda been doing with my time.

Nick Young makes me irrationally upset. I think it's the fact that he has such great hair that does it. Like if he just a crusty looking dude with 11-week old cornrows or an unevenly cut bro-hawk I wouldn't be as mad at him for being a fucking scrub.

Look at what they have. An average point guard who will become an above average point guard is their star. Their two guard has had one good game all year, the guys behind him have been hurt and typically erratic respectively. Up front the only guy playing well is Hawes.

You take a very average team, subtract their best natural scorer/leading scorer, their best all around player, their best interior defensive player (not saying a lot) and what are they supposed to have?

If Turner stepped up, OK, I could see expectations. He has not.

You have Holliday, Hawes and a bunch of guys that are serviceable at best. This team is, on paper, considerably worse than last year if they don't have Bynum.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I didn't want to believe but this is spot on. I thought scrub ass Nick Young would a servicable LouWill replacement. I thought the combo of Lavoy Allen and Arnette Moultrie would provide enough Bama-ness to replace what we got out of Brand. I knew we'd miss Iggy, but thought ET progress, Wright, JRich, and Thad would combine for something.

I still have some hope. I think you are selling Tha Damaja a little short. I think they can still find someone gullible enough to take Turner (based off his potential) and get something in return.

Evan Turner lit up the Thunder for 26 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in Saturday's game, hitting 10-of-17 FGs and 6-of-7 FTs.

Evan Turner flirted with a triple-double on Wednesday with 12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block in 36 minutes against the Cavs.

I think the fact that it took him this long to pull off that achievement speaks volumes as to how underwhelming he's been as a pro/76er. Don't get me wrong, I wish him the best. let's tell it like it REALLY is

Coach didn't want to start him from day 1

and in my book

Evan still earned a starting spot based on his playoff performance against MIA 2 years ago

Coach still decided not to start him

Doug Collins basically threw Evan's first 2 years in the league out the window

and I still can't figure why

especially looking back now

what did we gain by starting Jodie Meeks for 2 years

a #2 overall pick that is still trying to fit into his role on this team

and if you look closely

Coach Collins is doing the same thing to Spencer Hawes

there is no reason that Hawes should not be starting for this team

and at the very least getting the majority of minutes

I don't know what happened last year with his injury

but Coach seemed to take it personally

he went from a starter early in the season

to a bench player

and for whatever reason, that's continued this year

Coach might be too ol' school

somebody should check him

turner played important minutes and about the right amount of time. i dont feel his development has been wasted, he was never going to be a phenom out of the box and the sixers used a deep rotation that had a lot of guys at 1-2-3 spots.

he could earn more responsibility now if he could play point guard at all. huge dropoff from their starter to their backup right now.

to actually prove his worth, he just hasn't remotely in light of his draft position.

Doug Collins doesn't want our most pedigreed player coming out of college to be a bum that doesn't demand more minutes.

Dude is playing 35 minutes a night, shooting 41% & scoring 12 points a game.

That's on him not anyone else.

I'm asking

what did we gain by not starting him?

in your opinion

should we have kept Jodie Meeks

spin it how you want

his role coming off the bench

and running with LouWill and Thad

was to grab rebounds, play defense, and defer to the NightShift

and now we have a guy that grabs boards, plays defense, and is just now finding his role in the offense

.

but at least some people can see the issue with how we're using Hawes

Williams (at the 2) and Iggy (2 and 3) played more minutes than Meeks. There were only so many minutes to divide between those three, Turner, Young et al at those two positions. Turner was not the most competent player then, he was all over the place.

He's still inconsistent.

I've never been as critical as say Guinness that he was going to be garbage. I've always said his ceiling was roughly Eddie Jones, who I loved. Few players reach their ceiling though.

Hawes' minutes are down for like two games, I wouldn't quite call that the doghouse.

managed to not completely lose the team by now is a pleasant surprise.

he has done a better job than i expected, but i hardly think he is red auerbach. go back to his hire, i said he was the type of coach they needed (hard ass, gets the most of his talent) but the wrong guy because he was largely unsuccessful and, more importantly, he was not a good bridge coach. they needed to hire someone to get through a building phase and turn the keys over to someone more permanent. he has tended to wear his teams down and leave them in a bad position to move forward.

but he's done a good job so far with what he's been given. i know you love evan turner and i am sure as hell rooting for him. but he hasn't been the victim of any conspiracy. they had players who fit roles and/or were more consistent and/or were better. they got rid of a bunch of them to give him an opportunity. when a team trades its best player and an all star and lets its leading scorer go in free agency to give a guy a shot, you lose your right to bitch.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

he's had a couple decent games. tonight wasn't one of them, considering he shot 4-13 from the floor, with three assists, two TOs, no steals and no blocks. as usual, he rebounded well, but that's largely the result of being an oversized SG on a team without strong rebounders in the front court.

turner also almost singlehandedly lost the game for the sixers.

3:13 Evan Turner misses 13-foot jumper
2:42 Markieff Morris blocks Evan Turner 's 3-foot jumper
2:39 Michael Beasley blocks Evan Turner's layup
1:24 Evan Turner misses three point jumper

he had four misses in five consecutive philly possessions down the stretch. turner also let beasley straight up blow by him for what would have been a tying layup, if SCB hadn't choked.

i'm not trying to do another DUCKSAUCE SUX post here. at least he's been contributing a bit. but let's not pretend as if he was a world-beater out there tonight.

after that, he had a couple nice plays on rebounds and loose balls, but was totally unremarkable overall. he played pretty poorly down the stretch when the sixers had chances to pull away, too.

he was probably the main player i wanted to watch up close. i think he is learning in a lot of areas, defense seems to be improving a bit for example. he is still a long way from fulfilling his potential.

“I told him I was taking him to the post,” Turner said of Williams. “He’s so tiny. And I’ve put on weight. He hasn’t seen me in a while. He was trying to call my moves and stuff, and when I was countering, he was shocked. It’s cool. Good to see him. I knew he was happy to be back.”

his numbers are virtually the same as last year per 48 minutes. his two areas of improvement are that he's shooting well from three (although still only making one a game) and better from the free-throw line. as a result, he went from disastrous on offense to mediocre. his defensive rating has plummeted, though, and he still doesn't get any steals or blocks.

i guess he's not a bust and he's had some excellent games, but turner's more "somewhat useful" than "good."

not a "star" like you'd expect with a number 2 overall pick, but he was clearly the best choice for the Sixers in 2010...

without Turner, this team is even worse...

if they had drafted Cousins, he would have ended up Sprewelling Doug Collins

Derrick Favors? Lol

Wesley Johnson? LOL

He's mediocre, which is a big step forward from awful. His improvement in shooting, especially from three, is a good sign, but I wouldn't dream of resigning him unless he took a serious salary reduction (he makes like seven a year off that rookie number two pick slot).

iggy was a more efficient scorer, a better distributor and a whole different category of defender. it's not like turner is some great deal, either: he's an average SG making $5.3M this season (and then almost $7M and almost $9M for the next two).

all hate for turner was totally justified. i'm giving him credit for improving, but he's still not "damn good" by any stretch.

are you insulted that Iggy's +1 steal per game doesn't blow me away

The point being

for a kid getting his first crack at starters' minutes and touches

I don't understand where the hate comes from

especially considering we just spent how many years

over paying Iggy to put up ALMOST the same numbers

of course Iggy did some things better

he's also a 10 year vet

making +$10mil/yr

look at Iggy's numbers from last year

his first as an all-star

then get back to me

how about because he has sucked for his entire career, up until roughly the last month? i want turner to do well, i'm just not going to join in a circle jerk because he's developed into an average shooting guard.

facts are facts: he's still inefficient at scoring and average defensively (but doesn't create turnovers or block shots). he rebounds well.

he was terrible until recently. and lately, he's been okay (specifically because of the improvements i named above). i'm not sure how any of this is debatable.

that said, turner's shooting from three-point range this season makes me far more optimistic than i was before.

he never was put in a position where his skill set is optimized.

this is the argument I'm making

Coach Collins wasted his first 2 years in the league

it took the front office deciding to overhaul the roster

for him to get a shot

and he's performing well IMO

especially considering who he replaced

Also... the "Evan Turner/Jrue Holiday" connection has the potential to be THE best backcourt in the NBA for years to come.

Evan may not be "damn good" by your standards, but he's:

-1st amongst the league's SF in 3pt percentage
-4th amongst the league's SF in defensive rebounds and assists
-7th amongst the league's SF in field goals made
-10th amongst the league's SF in total points

being as though this is his first year as a starter, id say that's pretty solid.

Ungrateful Philly fucks

Anyway, apparently if the Sixers score over 100 points, everybody in the arena gets a free Big Mac

On Friday, the Sixers sat at 99 points with seconds remaining, and didn't want to show up the other squad

So, Philly fans being who they are, they booed (and don't try to fucking compare this shit to the We Want Tacos shit with the Lakers, it's not the same thing)

And after the game Doug had the PA announcer tell everyone that Big Macs were on him

Cool story bro

Started off great. Got cold in the first quarter allowing the nets to take the lead. Never could get over the hump.

Smart of avery to start bogans. I thought it would work for us. We matched up pretty well with them on the floor, but bogans shooting allowed them to space the floor.

Good to see lavoy look alive this afternoon. That's two straight games for him.

In a close game we needed hawes and wright to shoot better off the bench.

Also need more FTA from the team. 30 - 10 is rough in a close game. I saw about 1 or 2 calls that could go either way. Not good at all. That's not even a dig against jrue. Thad was the only starter to go to the line at all. And he went once.

Jrue has shown and proved. He's more than worth keeping.

Thad as well. I really like him. Before the season I wanted to package him for Jsmoove. Not anymore. Same production w/o the contract or headaches. Even though I would love to see that type of finisher and shot blocker on this team.

Evan...who knows. Every new moon he plays the game of his life. The other times he's an inefficient dribbling too much mess.

The new shooters...Jrich is old and shot. Those knees have 35-40 games a year in them max. Swaggy P is still a sideshow more than a player. Dorrell is in doug's doghouse. It's almost like an either or thing. But dorrell needs to play. He can be abused on D and if his shot isn't falling doug benches him. Sad for a guy they spent all off-season selling as this all around player who shoots well.

The mess known as the frontcourt...too many backups playing too many minutes. Lavoy has of late shown glimpses, but most of the time he plays like he barely cares at all. Reminding why he lasted until the 2nd round. Hawes can do somethings one of them is not defending well. Especially athletic front court players. Too many dudes have have had career nights against these dudes. Need more moultrie. Escpecially since the playoffs aren't doable this year.

The spare parts...they've come and gone. Not really much to say. Sad to say pargo came in and in one game made them all irrelevant.

Kwame...sad face. For a team that struggles to defend the paint he's wasting away on the bench.

Bynum...The guy who may or may not come back this month. On maybe not ever. Still would've made the trade. And would still sign him long term if healthy.

A whole lot of fuckery so far. Just need to see more moultrie and dorrell. Less of guys named wilkins, ivey, and hawes.

Eh. I love Thad but Smith is a better at just about every basketball skill. Not sure if by enough to justify the salary differences. I'd actually like to have them both.

>Evan...who knows. Every new moon he plays the game of his

Still on the same tip as I was with him earlier in the season. I want him shipped out of here while he still has value. I am a little worried though as this team sucks on defense and Evan has been one of the few consistently decent defenders.

I thought J-Rich was done anyway so I am not too distraught over what we got out of him. Don't know why I expected more out of Swaggy P but his inconsistency has prevented him from being a completely adequate Lou Willz replacement. Maybe now that he is starting he steps it up but I doubt it. Wright is the most disapointing to me. I always liked him and was excited about what he could bring here. For whatever reason he can't get on the floor anymore.

I rebound and defend the post as well as Spence and he has 10 inches and 70 pounds on me. As a 7-footer who can make walk and chew gum at the same time he has some value in a deal. I want him out of here like yesterday. Lavoy just plays with no fire, he didn't have it at Temple, he didn't have it in HS, he just isn't that type of dude. He is a rotational big, his ceiling is a slightly tougher Spencer Hawes. Moultrie should be getting way more minutes, you can't be athletic and lead the SEC in rebounding and not be able to contribute more than he has so far. Doug doesn't like youngsters so I expect him to continue to be under-utilized.

I changed my mind on this every 5 minutes. I don't know what the fuck they should do about this but I am sure whatever they do it will end up being the wrong decision... cause its the Sixers

The money is a problem though. He wants to be maxed out. And he's not worth it. I'd take thad for half the money and less bball skill. I'd love them both too. But not at max money.

He has no excuse to not play moultrie 20-25 minutes a nights. mistakes and all. Especially since he may cost us this year's #1.

smith does some useful things, but he's a sloppy offensive player who wants max money. i'd pass, unless the idea is just to get hawes and turner off the books for next season and let smith walk.

that said, a team with jrue, josh smith, thad and bynum (if even financially possible) would be great defensively and fun to watch -- although i'm not sure collins could ever figure out how to keep jrue and smoove from shooting shitty midrange jumpers.

I swear he goes into these hero ball stretchs where he just dribbles down court, uses up the shot clock and takes a 7-10 footer like 3 out of every 5 possessions. It even more maddening when he tries to spin dribble or crossover the defender.

Last night he got to the line a bit which helped his stats.

Collins Unimpressed By Bynum's First Practice

Brian Windhorst breaks down Andrew Bynum's first practice back and what the 76ers can expect from him.
Tags: Andrew Bynum, 76ers, Doug Collins, Brian Windhorst
PHILADELPHIA -- Andrew Bynum practiced Friday with the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time since they traded for him last August. But instead of it being a positive moment, it only seemed to depress coach Doug Collins.

Speaking before the 76ers hosted the Miami Heat on Saturday night, Collins said Bynum's brief 5-on-5 workout only showed how far away he is from being able to play, and hinted at just what a lost season this has been for the team.

Bynum
"He looked like a guy who hadn't played in nine months," Collins said. "I don't think any bells and whistles should be sent off that he's close to playing."

Bynum has been giving weekly updates on the condition of his knees, though he's often offered contradictory information. His return date from bone bruises in both knees has constantly been pushed back.

"I'll definitely be back sometime this year," Bynum said earlier this week. "I'm focused on getting back and being right versus trying to rush."

The recent hope that Bynum could return around the All-Star break was the latest to be dashed for the 76ers, who have been decimated by injuries this season. Jason Richardson, who was acquired with Bynum in a blockbuster offseason deal, had knee surgery this week and is expected to miss six to nine months.

Collins said watching Bynum go through a little practice only left him disappointed considering just how much the team's big plans have been ruined by Bynum's constant knee issues.

"It's amazing seeing him standing out there; he distorted the whole practice," Collins said. "You get visions of what might've been ... He's said that he's going to play, but this season is slipping away. We've got 24 games after (this weekend). We're eight (games) under .500, and we've got to play the Miami Heat four times."

During the offseason, the Sixers agreed to let Bynum's New York-based doctor lead the treatment on his knees, a decision that surprised executives around the league. The team mostly has let Bynum announce progress and setbacks, of which there have been many since October.

Bynum played in 60-of-66 games last season with the Lakers, which led the Sixers to believe he'd be healthy this season after the major trade. But a procedure in Germany aimed at helping his knees, followed by a setback after a night of bowling, has knocked Bynum out for the entire season thus far.

Collins said Bynum would inform them of any future updates, as he has during the entire process.

"You should talk to him," Collins said. "I don't want to be the messenger because they shoot messengers."

Showcase his skills for the contract. The fact that he visited the doc on monday there was no announcement was huge. Bad news would've came out then.

It won't matter much this season. Not completely bad news though. We'll keep the pick this year and we now know who to keep and how to toss.

With him we have a shot at something real.

Without him they're terrible. Which is better than the mediocre floatsam they've been for years.

I wouldn't mind resigning him, keeping the lottery pick, and using what little financial flexibility to fill out the roster. I hear fans moaning how signing bynum would doom us for years. LOL As if 38-40 wins and first round fodder meant something.

Be great or be terrible. All I ever wanted.

continuously possessing such a putrid offense (never getting to the line, more mid-range jumpers than any team in the NBA) isn't new this season - even if the bynum injury eliminated the sixers' lone post-threat. plus collins hates "advanced" metrics and doesn't like playing young dudes.

there is no reason moultrie is not getting 15 mins a night on this team. There is no playoff push to be had. He goes two games getting 20 and then thad comes back and poof. He's back to DNP-CD's from here on out.

He has given turner free reign. Just what his fans wanted. No more excuses. It was a bad pick.

and then this press conference, he is a straight up sociopath

76ers hire Sam Hinkie as GM

The Philadelphia 76ers have hired Houston Rockets executive Sam Hinkie to be the franchise's new general manager, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Hinkie will replace Tony DiLeo with the 76ers and assume full control of basketball operations.

Hinkie, who had been the Rockets' vice president of basketball operations since 2010, met with 76ers officials a year ago about the job, but the team ultimately promoted DiLeo to the GM role. Philadelphia president Rod Thorn is retiring this spring and assuming a consultant's role with the organization. Doug Collins resigned as coach at season's end.

Hinkie has had a major influence in reshaping the Rockets franchise, bringing an analytics background to the organization's strong run of draft picks, trades and free-agent signings. Houston GM Daryl Morey finished third in the voting among his peers for Executive of the Year.

Hinkie will spearhead the organization's search for a new head coach. The 76ers have several significant decisions to make this offseason, including how to approach the pending free agency of center Andrew Bynum.

I thought they were going to drag this out and hire whoever was left. Maybe even keep dileo and curry around.

This is about as out the box as they get.

on this season because last year was his first offseason & he took a big cut.

That was more than you can say about anything they really did since the Croce era.

Let this be his Brad Greenberg/Johnny Davis year where he sees the error of his team's ways then moves forward in another direction.

DiLeo is a soldier, he'll go back to some other role with a smile on his face.

As long as he's in the building & gets to stay in the area while collecting a check from the Sixers he's good.

I believe they already had talked to Hinkie last year & made a push to hire him but he didn't want to work in conjunction with Collins having input.

He made the right chess move & waited that out, now he's here.

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/58095/back-to-the-future-for-the-76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers have hired former Houston Rockets second-in-command Sam Hinkie as their new president of basketball operations and general manager.

Hinkie is a highly regarded behind-the-scenes NBA mind who has put in the work on every front, from mastering the nitty gritty of the CBA to traveling the backwaters of the globe scouting prospects. He has been a key figure in building Houston's analyst-thick Moneyball-style front office that has cleverly created advantages for itself -- figuring out how to win the James Harden sweepstakes was just one example. Using innovative contract structure trickery to haul in Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik through free agency offers other teams couldn't match were others.

Some teams shoot from the hip. Rest assured, under Hinkie, the Sixers will adhere to well-honed long-term strategy. Assuming Hinkie is empowered to follow his principled approach, it would make no sense to bet against them as they wrestle with big decisions like who to hire as head coach, and whether or not to retain the injured Andrew Bynum.

Effectively out of the loop, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, are the likes of Rod Thorn, Tony DiLeo and Doug Collins.

It's tough to say if this is a departure for the 76ers, or a return to the direction the franchise was headed in when Joshua Harris bought the team in 2011.

When a bundle of smart-guy Wall Streeters -- Josh Harris, Dave Blitzer, Art Wrubel and company -- bought the team in the summer of 2011, many thought Collins' days were numbered. It was assumed the Sixers would, in modern Wall Street-style, become the Rockets East, using analytics to drive every little decision.

The guess was that the traditional hoops heads in the building -- Collins, Rod Thorn -- were on the way out, sooner or later, likely to be replaced by the ownership group's ready-made candidate, former player-agent Jason Levien, and his handpicked coaches and front-office people. The other key decision-maker, Ed Stefanski, didn't even wait for the other shoe to drop and took the first good job somewhere else, in Toronto.

Change was coming, sooner or later.

The traditional hoops people hung around, though. Most still had contracts, and it's not popular for new owners to clean house immediately. There's an element of paying your respects to how things have long been done.

Before the new owners could reorganize, Collins led a low-expectations team into the playoffs (barely) as an eighth seed. Bulls star Derrick Rose tore his ACL in that series (as you may have heard). And then Joakim Noah got hurt too, alternating between missing time and playing badly hurt. The Bulls are known as the team whose spirit cannot be crushed, but in that series, they were broken. The Sixers became that rare eighth seed that beats a one -- and then they darn near repeated the accomplishment in the next round, taking the Celtics to a seventh game before bowing out.

It was plain to see, in the bowels of the arena during that playoff run, that the new owners -- in person and with all kinds of family in tow in the locker room, in the stands, in the news conferences, in the private club upstairs with VIP guests -- were falling head-over-heels for Collins. He knew it too. The team was winning. So soon! The giddiness was all around, and everyone smiled when Collins declared he was a "Sixer for life."

Not that long ago then-coach Collins was the de facto king of the Sixers organization. The city was lukewarm on the players, but tune into sports radio in the City of Brotherly Love in the summer of 2012, and nobody agreed on much -- it's Philly, after all -- but they agreed Collins was the center of the 76er universe.

Thorn was never expected to stay forever. As the apple of the owners' eyes, Collins was either going to be Thorn's de facto replacement, or the guy who made his actual replacement's job almost impossible to do. Whatever Collins wanted would matter. And he tended to want all kinds of things. He was hot and cold on young talents like Evan Turner, and his idea of a great free-agent signing was the perpetually disappointing center Kwame Brown, who was brought in with the theory he had the right kind of body to protect the paint, but has a block percentage worse than some guards.

The new owners interviewed a string of GM candidates in the summer of 2012, including smart up-and-comers Hinkie, the Celtics' highly respected assistant GM Mike Zarren, former Portland assistant GM Tom Penn and others. But they ended up hiring 76ers lifer Tony DiLeo (he has been with the team since 1990, in almost every position imaginable). Sources say he was the choice in part because he was the candidate who could operate in Collins' outsized shadow. For innovators like Hinkie, there would be little chance to succeed with Collins around.

Not coincidentally, around that time Levien extricated himself from the Sixers ownership group, instead partnering with billionaire Robert Pera. They bought the Grizzlies together last fall; Levien calls the shots now as CEO.

Meanwhile, the 2012-2013 season began and things went badly for the team. Stat geeks laughed from afar at the collection of notoriously inefficient newcomers like Brown and Nick Young, as well as the impulsive drafting of Arnett Moultrie.

Most importantly, gone was Andre Iguodala. In his place was the perpetually injured Andrew Bynum.

The love affair between owners, city and Collins frayed quickly. The tone in the media soured. It stopped feeling like a team that could beat the top overall seed in the East. With a 34-48 record, they couldn't even make the playoffs.

On April 18, Collins announced he was stepping down as coach.

The owners have subtly signaled a doubling down on the kinds of quant analytic geekery that had once been Plan A. They hired Aaron Barzilai as the director of basketball analytics (something Collins was public about not valuing much) in November. They became one of the NBA's first 15 teams to use SportVu optical tracking technology. And, in a move that is increasingly a sign of an organization's new-breed strategic thinking (because of subtle advantages to savvy teams) last month they bought a D-League team -- to be called, of all things, the Delaware 87ers.

Meanwhile, the kind of aggressive new-breed thinking that Collins, Thorn, Stefanski et al always assumed would eventually rule the day in Philly, well ... it's back.

Hinkie has a track record of being respectful and humble, even as he outworks and out thinks the competition. If history is any guide, he'll have little interest in rattling cages by identifying his arrival as a sea change from the way things have been done in Philadelphia.

And maybe that's accurate. In many ways, it's not a sea change. Now Joshua Harris' 76ers are back on course to where they were headed all along, despite the detour. They are once again on the path to becoming the Rockets East, complete with one of the Rockets' key executives.

It'll be interesting to see the type of players he'll try to get, along with the coaching staff.
