"Super Bowl 58: Dynasty vs. Destiny"

All the shit to say has been said.

A ring for the Niners would be a reward well deserved for those players and for Lynch/Shanahan, who have done an amazing job putting together this behemoth.

A third ring for Andy, Mahomes and Maauto would put them in a different tier of champion.

Line em' up!! (c) Let's get it!

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

I’m tired of the Chiefs and I dislike them, and the Niners are an old Giants rival, and I have an obnoxious coworker who is the worst type of sports fan I know….so I have no real rooting interests. Its Chiefs out of spite. Wish we got Bills - Lions or something.

Also, I’m gonna need Usher to limit his bullshit songs to “Yeah”. I understand he’s gotta do that one. No “OMG” or “DJ Got Us Falling in Love” though. Fuck all that, do your classic R&B shit.

Anyone else other than Kelce/Swift and they're showing clips every five mins and cutting to the sideline reporter. They showed it once and not a peep since.

He’s ruining this game for me.

Just because you interject every post of yours with details about your “wife” 😂 doesn’t mean I have to

Don’t be mad SF is a shitty hellhole and the butt of jokes / criticism from the rest of the country , and now the Niners are the 2000s Buffalo 🦬 Bills

Much to the chagrin of other Ohio state posters

But we’ve won two national titles in 10 years apart

I’ve called TOSU football the Kentucky of college football as of late , all these first round picks and only nothing to show for it

I’ve repeatedly said Urban underachieved w the talent he had (but he beat Michigan like a drum so I could cope that way , but now we can’t even do that )

If the other team scores, you get to play with 4 fowns instead of 3, pkus you have the chance of your defense scoring/forcing a turnover.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I also did not think about the fact that the chiefs did not need to use a TO at the end of the "1st qtr of OT" i thought if the period had expired it would have been over.

just on some would be the most epic of fails, then someone pointed out to me that it wouldn't have ended the game because it was still their first possession and the time would have just reset to 15 mins if the game were to continue.

Kyle said after the game they took the ball because they wanted the third possession if it came to that...which is not the worst explanation I've heard but I'm sure there is not enough data to defend that decision

I hadnt thought about that. The way both defenses were playing, not sure how likely there'd be scores on 3 straight possessions.

as many football minds have pointed out that the 3rd possession would likely never come as any coach in their right mind is going for 2 and the win had both teams scored a TD.

don't argue with me (not saying you will), i'm just repeating what many have said already.

Been two field goals

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

So time expires after the 2nd OT qtr and then the 3rd OT would be a new half but yeah, at that point dont make 2 teams that cant score have to start from scratch, which yeah makes the whole clock shit moot.

Just play until whatevr that needs to happen, happens

In response to Reply # 0

Niners played well enough to win. Overall, D was better than it had been in weeks. Purdy overall played well. CMC did his thing. Maholmes just had too many chances.

How am I supposed to be mad at? CMC for fumbling on the first drive of the game. He beasted out the rest of the game and helped Niners play as well as they did. Moody for kicking the extra point too low? He made two monster FGs earlier in the game. I can't put it on Mc Cloud for not diving on the ball after it ricochetted off of dudes foot. Play happened really fast. I guess I could be at the league for ever fucking with the OT rules, but that would be petty and dumb on my part.

So, yeah. We played well. Maholmes is just an excellent QB.

I'm mostly disappointed because this was probably our best chance to win it. I'm hoping we can back, but it's going to get tougher and tougher to keep everyone.

In response to Reply # 48

Didn't feel like we were outplayed, in fact felt like we dominated 2.5 quarters of the game. I mean obviously we can complain about play calls, but we know who Kyle is, he wants to be the smartest person in the room.

On 3rd and 4 inside their 10 i would say you call some kind of run. (you know Spags was sending the house gotta call something quick not at the end zone) Or if you do call a pass have CMC motion behind Purdy and not in front where they can cut the edge off and he is an option on the screen. If CMC can just fight for 2 yds there you go for it on 4th and if they stop you they get the ball on their own 3-5 and have to drive 95 yds.

Overall, proud of the team, gotta wonder what happens if Dre doesn't tear an Achilles running onto the field.

Kyle's gonna have to write a new story cause this shit is painful.

That actually might have been my favorite since the late 1980s/mid 1990s. Especially the defensive squad. We just got unlucky/Kyle Williams let the ball bounce of his knee. This game? We mostly got beat by a great QB.

>Overall, proud of the team, gotta wonder what happens if Dre
>doesn't tear an Achilles running onto the field.

That really sucked, but I really try not to get caught up hypotheticals. Like, let's that extra point doesn't get blocked. Am I really going to believe that Mahomes wouldn't have tried and probably made one of a couple of extra shots into the endzone?

That whole sudden death where the winner was largely based on who won the coin toss was the most dumbest shit ever

This made overtime so much more exciting and actually puts more pressure on teams to execute game plans rather than getting into a field position game and coming down to who has the kicker w the stronger leg 🦵

be mad and sulk about what could have been in peace. because I'm just thinking bout how close we really came. After seeing zero post-season hope for this team my whole life. Even after that one playoff win we had in the 1991 season we knew we were bout to get blown out by Washington in the NFC Championship, and we did.

But this year? We shoulda won that 49ers game. Coulda beat the Chiefs too. So Ima sit here and sulk in my woulda coulda shoulda mode. After this year though we can't say it's our first time.

“You guys saw that? I’m going to keep it between us unless my mic’d up tells the world," said Kelce. "I was just telling him how much I loved him.”

Super Bowl: Several 49ers players admitted they didn't know new rules when OT started
Liz Roscher
Staff writer
Mon, Feb 12, 2024, 9:31 PM GMT+5:30·3 min read

We got to see the NFL's new playoff overtime rules in action on Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers failed to win the 2024 Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, a result that seemed pretty much inevitable once Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan chose to take the ball first in overtime. San Francisco's first (and only) overtime possession resulted in a field goal, while the Chiefs scored the game-winning touchdown.

It was the first time a playoff game had gone into overtime since the NFL adopted new rules in 2022, which give both teams a chance to possess the ball. Prior to that, the first team to score a touchdown in overtime would win the game.

Even though the new rules have been around for two seasons now, some 49ers players were still living in 2021. After their 25-22 loss, several told Lindsay Jones of The Ringer that they didn't know there were new overtime rules specifically for the playoffs.

Multiple San Francisco players said after the game that they were not aware that the overtime rules are different in the playoffs than they are in the regular season, and strategy discussions over how to handle the overtime period did not occur as a team. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead said he learned the details of the postseason rule when it was shown on the Allegiant Stadium jumbotron during a TV timeout after regulation. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk said he assumed the 49ers asked to receive when they won the toss because that’s what you do in the regular season, when a touchdown wins the game. “I guess that’s not the case. I don’t really know the strategy,” Juszczyk said.

Shanahan knew the strategy, but it hadn't filtered down to all the players. The Chiefs, on the other hand, had been running Super Bowl overtime drills since training camp, and spent significant time over the past few weeks discussing the strategy.

The Chiefs’ overtime plan worked out exactly how they had hoped—and it wasn’t by accident. Kansas City safety Justin Reid told The Ringer that the Chiefs had first discussed the new overtime rules as far back as training camp. Defensive lineman Chris Jones told me players were prepared for what to expect if the Super Bowl went to overtime.

“We talked through this for two weeks,” Jones said. “How we was going to give the ball to the opponent; if they scored, we was going for two at the end of the game. We rehearsed it.”

Given that several Niners players admitted they didn't know the OT rules, the last 5-10 minutes of the game could have been wildly different than what we saw. If San Francisco had scored a TD on their first possession instead of a field goal, there likely would have been several players celebrating on the sideline like they'd literally just won the Super Bowl, when they in fact still had to give the ball back to the Chiefs.

At least with the way it turned out, the Niners only have to deal with losing the Super Bowl, instead of losing the Super Bowl and embarrassing themselves by not knowing the rules of the very game they play for a living. Every storm cloud has a silver lining, right?

It sucks so much. He tried to play through the injury all playoffs basically and ended up tearing it in the most random way possible.

I was horrified for the Niners all game long. That injury made their downfall defensively feel borderline inevitable. And still, they fought like crazy and had a few shots at it. But CMC fumbling, Brock missing a couple of throws where Shanny drew up a touchdown, etc al helped give Pat and them a chance to ‘steal’ another one. If I’m up on KC, I might get my Dan Campbell on trying to extend the lead! Hehe

What a game.

In response to Reply # 0

People are taking this shit way too far with this. Every talking head today is like " he should have deferred and knew what he had to match".

That's absolutely ridiculous. You take the ball and you go try to score whichever way you can and you PLAY DEFENSE. Even if you defer there's no guarantee if the other team scores that you are going to match that score.

There's not a better chance you will match the score than getting a stop. Especially if it's a touchdown.

The odds aren't that much better. We don't even have the data yet to really quantify it. It's a new rule and this is the first time we saw it in action.

People make me sick with this shit.

because a) you know what points you need and b) you can expand the playbook if it's win or lose because you have an extra down to play with.

it's not complicated and why anyone would be mad about this is being weird (or maybe just a pissed off Niners fan? i dunno).

You either execute or you don't. You can use all 4 downs if you get the ball first too. They went for it on 4th down to go up during regulation. People pick and choose what they think is smart based on some hypothetical nonsense.

All of this is biased based on success. If it works you're a genius and if it doesn't it was dumb. Which again you just have to execute.

One way or another if you don't defend you're done.

What difference does it make? Saying you know what you have to do and you will play with more urgency and use more downs shouldn't even be part of the argument. You should playing like that anyway whether you go first or second.

There's no clear advantage if you can the other team can get a stop and you can still lose. If the first team scores a TD how is it an advantage to have to match that?

The first team gets to have their lead and focus only on keeping the other team out of the endzone. I like those odds just as much.

because you know you need a TD to tie and a two-pointer to win. what is the advantage of going first?

well if you believe in your defense, put them out on the field first -- which is the preferred choice when you win the opening game coin flip -- and stop the other team. then just drive for the winning field goal.

even if it is a small advantage, it's an advantage.

had San Fran scored a TD and extra point, then KC scored a matching touchdown, they knew they could win the Superbowl by asking Patrick Mahomes to get two yards.

why would they kick an extra point and give the ball back to San Fran, knowing a field goal beats them and they have no more possessions?

You could have stopped at Patrick Mahomes. If that's all this is about is having Mahomes then that is an advantage in ANY situation.

if you knew the next field goal beat you, and you had a chance to win in one play from the two-yard line, you will always take that option

it is *not* a better option to kick a PAT, have to make a defensive stop out of field goal range, THEN have to drive the ball again back into field goal range yourself -- and also make a field goal

so the only possible advantage of getting the third possession doesn't really exist (unless you go for two on the opening drive for some reason, that may be the galaxy brain stuff you're referring to)

Get another possession if you fail is way different than going for it in OT.

If KC gets the ball first and they have 4th and 4 at their 31 yard line, KC more than likely punts and plays defense to stop the Niners from trying to get a FG.

Once the Niners scored a FG on their first possession, KC had 4 downs to get a first down or score so it is irrelevant to what the down and distance on 4th down is or where on the field KC is at because they are going for it on 4th down in order to extend the game.

I believe KC did convert a 4th down at midfield on that final OT drive to win.

And there's not as much of an advantage as people think to going second. You have a narrative of what's already happened to fit some self fulfilling prophecy.

If the second team that deferred doesn't score at all it would be.....well they may not have scored if they took the ball first either.

Or maybe don't give up a touchdown if you took the ball first and only got a field goal.

This is all confirmation bias.

I like Shanahan's thought process of going third and it being sudden death at that point.

It's never an advantage to be down in a game AT ALL. I don't care if you have 4 downs or not. You can say that if you have Patrick Mahomes but otherwise you want the ball first and you want to dictate what happens first. You might score and then force a turnover on the second team.

There's too many scenarios to call it that clear of an advantage.

what? where did I state any narrative? I was rooting for the Niners lol. I simply said there is no advantage to going first in this scenario.

>
>If the second team that deferred doesn't score at all it would
>be.....well they may not have scored if they took the ball
>first either.

no one said a deferring team is guaranteed a win, just that there's a few obvious advantages to deferring, even if they're small. Besides know what you need to score to tie or potentially win the game, you can also get an INT/fumble while on defense and score, thereby ending the game. All this combined with the fact that the Niners seemingly didn't know about the rule makes this inexcusable. I have no opinions on Shanahan as a coach, but there's no excuse for that.

>It's never an advantage to be down in a game AT ALL.

Deferring is not simply conceding points. You can also stop them on their drive and then you don't have the pressure of figuring out which way you need to score, so that's another advantage.

I'm assuming that's more of the "go for 2" after you score stuff. Again that's right there with going for it on 4th down. You're spending that entire drive just living on a razors edge if you do that.

I think Mahomes has warped peoples sense or reality with this type of shit.

and his defense to hold the opposing team, so on the third possession it's a tie game and the offense can get to work and win sudden death?

I think the only reason you would receive first is if you *didn't* think your defense could stop anybody -- you score a TD and two-pointer, your defense is horrific so the other team gets the matching score and conversion, then you get the ball back to win

the other option that comes to mind is if the wind conditions were horrible and you picked the side that was way more advantageous to a field goal, but I think that would only come into play if the offenses were not very good

Wasn't the Chiefs only TD to that point the one after the muffed punt in prime position? I can see him thinking the defense could hold them to 3 or less but yeah, didn't work out. I've seen college coaches take ball first in OT tho too and always think it's the wrong decision.

All of you were DRAGGING Dan Campbell after the NFCCG for going for it on 4th down and not kicking FG's but would be fine with taking the ball second and possibly being down a FG or TD in OT while talking about having to go for it on 4th down that whole drive like it's a gift.

Make it make sense.

And then if you score.....going for 2 instead of kicking an extra point. Can you imagine losing the Super Bowl on a 2 point conversion?

You'd be in here dragging that coach.

All I'm saying is you can't push this narrative like making these plays is no big deal.

Everyone has made it make sense. You’ve just ignored the explanations while coming up with scenarios where the deferring team could lose, when no one said the deferring team was guaranteed a win, just that they have the advantage of knowing what they need before their offensive drive.

I hear you. I'm just giving scenarios that show that automatically deferring because of the "advantage" isn't a sure thing no matter how small or large you think the advantage may be.

You can make just as good of a case for both receiving the ball as you can for deferring.

When your "advantage" involves 4th down risks and 2 point conversions its not much of an advantage if any. Were basically in 50/50 territory.

I was just getting pissed at how much people are sticking their chest out like Shanahan was an idiot for doing it. Or any coach.

There's an advantage in going first too......you can rest your defense that just may have been on the field.

We could go on and on with this. I'm not saying I'm right. I'm just saying that there's too many variables in both choices to say one is absolutely the better choice.

If Shanahan presented his logic AND his players said they were all aware of the rule, I’d give him the benefit of the doubt here. There was clearly some confusion on his sideline though, which there’s no real excuse for regardless of the logic he used in choosing to receive.

You're absolutely right about that part of it. The Chiefs prepared so much for the new rule that the Chiefs players even understood that the game wouldn't end on their possession at the end of the first OT period.

Knowing every nuance of the rule effects everything.....player decisions, playcalling, ect.

So from that standpoint.....Shanahan dropped the ball. Even if he knew all of this....not going over it with his team in detail was a pretty bad look.

You gotta think every team goes over this EXTENSIVELY this summer if they haven't already.

and even then it wouldn’t be the “right call” but you at least can say “we wanted to be aggressive, we believed in our D, blah blah blah

nothing is guaranteed so of course they have a chance to win in any scenario but its a bad call to take the ball first in OT.

So if the 49ers defer and the Chiefs go an hang 7 on them on that first possession and the 49ers can't match it.....it was WITHOUT QUESTION the right decision? The 49ers put their defense back on the field that was just on the field and give up a touchdown....that is smart football?

Naw man.

that's understandable if that was specifically his strategy. Unfortunately, he didn't say that. He said he wanted the 3rd possession.

Reid on the other hand, specifically said he went over this with his analytics guy and the advantage to knowing exactly what you have to do to win or tie and knowing you are playing with 4 downs to get 10 yards(if SF scored first) was a huge advantage. From reading most of your posts, i'm still not sure you understand or have acknowledged that lol

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I was shocked how much they put themselves behind the chains in this game.

Overly conservative playcalling/penalties were killing drives for them left and right and other than crossers and sideline throws they weren't really attacking the field as a whole.

You felt like anytime they were in third and long it was a wrap. The Chiefs D is outstanding but to not even attempt to go deep on them was just inexcusable.

It really is a brilliant call. And as much as I love that damn show, I'm REALLY upset I didn't drop this heat myself too! Haha.

And really, in this case, Shanny is stuck going from Brady to Mahomes as the SNK boss of the NFL.

Brady and Mahomes have won SEVEN of the last 10 SBs. The exceptions:

- A crippled Peyton Manning stayed out of the way of that bonkers Broncos defense just enough to beat Cam's 15-1 Panthers that scored all over everyone that year (then he was hurt, 3 linemen retired and now people have revised history to swear that Cam sucked the whole time).
- Nick Foles played out of his mind and outdueled Brady/The Pats.
- Stafford handled his biz and took down Cincy.

Wild world of football!

Burrow barely played this season due to injury. Herbert played okay this year and missed the last 7 games of the season.

Played well to start the season but struggled in his last 7 games.

The only QBs in my mind that played better than Purdy this season were Goff, Mahomes, Jackson, and Allen.

I'm not going off of just last season. Basically what I've seen of them the last few years. If were saying just this season then yeah Purdy is top ten easily. But overall.....no.

I put Love and Stroud in front of him just based on talent alone. Those dudes have some live arms. Lawrence is behind him because he's not remotely clutch and Rodgers/Cousins/Tua are just a mixed bag of injury risk and empty calories.

His games last season, he is still top 10.

He may not have as big and arm as other QBs but he is consistent, protects the ball, and wins.

He has now taken his team to the NFCCG for in 2022 and the SB in 2023.

Most of the guys you just listed haven’t even been to a conference championship game in their career.

He's good. At worst, I worry about his ceiling not being much higher than what he's already doing.

And, the scarier thing: can he Febreze up some stinkier weapons WHEN he 'gets paid' and the roster around him gets worst? Even if its in San Francisco?

IE: we see how some QBs can struggle when the cast around them changes for the worst after they get paid. Dak is an example. But he's unfairly tagged as THE 'he shouldn't have gotten paid cuz it ruined his team' guy.

And hell, even friggin Mahomes had to fight through it with KC transitioning their approach from Madden money plays for 3 hours to having more of a focus on 'situational money plays'! Hehe. You know what I mean! They've won 2 SBs with the same motion play where Pat knew it was a TD when the ball got hiked.

He had those dudes humming. He held them to 19 point in regulation and until that unfortunate special teams gaffe held them to 6 points into the 3rd qtr after losing Greenlaw.

What more do you want from that defense?!?!? Against Mahomes! How about you convert one of those 3rd downs you had inside the redzone at the end of the game.

Is he going to fire the OL coach too cause leaving Chris Jones unblocked is what really lost them the game.
