"10 Cloverfield Lane (Cloverfield sequel) coming out March 11"

http://collider.com/cloverfield-2-secret-movie-10-cloverfield-lane/

In 2014, news broke that filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg—who helmed the short film Portal: No Escape—would be directing a post-apocalyptic thriller called Valencia (also referred to as The Cellar) for Bad Robot and Paramount Insurge, produced by J.J. Abrams. While it’s true that the film is a post-apocalyptic thriller and was produced by Abrams, it appears that the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director has pulled another fast one on us—the movie’s actual title is 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Yes indeed, it appears as though that long-talked-about sequel to the secretive Abrams-produced 2008 film Cloverfield is not only happening, it’s already in the can. Abrams is taking the exact same marketing approach to this film as he did with Cloverfield, as a Collider reader who caught an east coast screening of Paramount’s 13 Hours hipped us to the news that the teaser trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane is attached to Michael Bay’s Benghazi film. Surprise!

We subsequently reached out to Paramount Pictures for comment, who provided Collider with this exclusive statement from J.J. Abrams himself:

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

The film stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr. and when we previously spoke with Winstead while she was promoting her indie Faults, she told us the story revolves around a woman who wakes up in a cellar where she’s being kept by a stranger, played by Goodman. The actress previously elaborated a bit on the plot by saying the following:

“He tells me that basically the world is over outside because there’s been a nuclear fall-out. It does have similarity to Faults, in some ways, because you don’t know who’s telling the truth or who to believe. There’s a lot of, who’s manipulating who, and all of that. Tonally, it’s very different, but it has some of those same themes.”

Now that we know the title of the film, this “post-apocalyptic” setting appears to make much more sense, but how exactly it ties to Cloverfield remains unknown. Abrams tells us it’s a “blood relative”, which seems to suggest that the movie isn’t a direct sequel to Cloverfield but instead takes place within the same universe. Clearly it’s not found footage so it’s taking a different visual style than the Matt Reeves-directed original, but is it set within the New York City area? And how long after the events of Cloverfield does it pick up? That’s all unclear, but seeing as how the first trailer is set to arrive imminently, I’m sure we’ll have plenty more questions once that’s officially released.

Luckily, we don’t have to wait long at all to see the film. 10 Cloverfield Lane is set to hit theaters on March 11th.

What do you think, folks? 8 years later, are you still eager for another Cloverfield story? Sound off in the comments below.

and this was just a recording of the events showing what went down during the event.

I thought it was dope but the shaky cam was a bit much. As has already been said, a lot of people didn't care for it. IMO i just watched it from the standpoint of, if some giant monster showed up and started wrecking shit, this is what it would look and feel like were I in the immediate vicinity of such a remarkable event.

I liked the concept of watching a monster movie from the people's perspective, even if they were all dumb as a bag of hammers and their motives were idiotic. Still, the camera work physically made me nauseous at the theatre, which made it hard to watch.

This Unbreakable-at-the-end-of-the-world setup does have some potential. Plus Goodman

I'm glad to read that as that's exactly what I want from a "sequel" to Cloverfield. What's it like elsewhere in a world where such creatures exist as opposed to "look, we found another camera." I hope they have this showing in D-Box.

And would like to see more of these kinds of films. Marvel is starting to branch out a little bit with the latest pilot that got greenlight about the people who have to kind of deal with the fallout of the superhero fights (or, at least, I think that's what it is about.)

It was two original concepts that Abrams couldn't finish so he combined them.

The original wasn't that well-liked (I was a fan, though) and there's really nowhere for a direct sequel to go, unless you just have the monster go and wreck another city.

But as bwood said, JJ has been saying this is a "blood relative" of Cloverfield more than a direct sequel. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't even touch upon the same incident.

Nobody was clamoring for a sequel to that movie. That movie was all hype and left a lot of people disappointed. It wasn't a "bad" movie, but it certainly wasn't good and nobody I know was hoping for a sequel.

When it was still called The Cellar.

They should've left it alone as it was. A dope psychological thriller with a sci-fi twist in a contained location.

Fastest I've ever read a script honestly.

The trailer gives away nothing.

I agree that the "Cloverfield" elements didn't add as much to the story, but it wasn't enough to tarnish the rest of the film for me. And if the franchise association puts more people in seats to see the brilliance of the actual story, that can't be a bad thing, right?

Full disclosure: I haven't read the script you read so maybe it was a lot better than what ended up on screen?

After reading the script I can see why they did it. You get to see what caused the destruction vs leaving the ending open.

Open meaning you didn't know who/what the threat was. The film just tagged on the aliens due to the Cloverfield connection. I can understand if you wanted The Cellar but once JJ took over and the film got the Cloverfield tag you knew some type of creature/s would be present and the cause of the destruction.

really liked the psychological thriller part of the movie, and ideally for me it would've ended when she climbs on the roof of that truck and sees the big spaceship. Everything after that felt disjointed, like a short movie tacked on to the main event.

Goodman did his thing, he needs to be in more stuff

exactly.. leaving a cliffhanger of michelle looking at the spaceship woulda been so much better. like "oh fuck me, i finally escaped and now i gotta deal with aliens?" ...roll credits.

then she decides to oblige the distress call and hits the gas to houston? alrighty then. no sequel needed.

the film felt like a mashup of Misery and War of the Worlds.

The aliens stuff was still exciting and fun, it just felt like a sharp tonal shift. Not quite sure how to feel about a shift that sharp.

Still an enjoyable flick.

>really liked the psychological thriller part of the movie,
>and ideally for me it would've ended when she climbs on the
>roof of that truck and sees the big spaceship.>

thats EXACTLY what i said to my wife after this one. If it would have ended right there ...as she climbs on the roof and realizes...'oh. ohhh. ohhhh shit'..and credits? BAM! that would have been a nice 'punch in the gut' ending that would have MADE you want more! and probably would have bumped the movie into the 'GREAT' status for me. (right now its in the 'really good' status, which is still in the 'definitely worth seeing' realm, but damn...if they'd have gone for the gut punch ending instead, THAT would have pushed this one into a MUST see for me.

i also wish they would have named the movie something else, ANYthing else OTHER than something with 'Cloverfield' in the title. Having Cloverfield in the title kinda spoils it for me. if they hadn't forced that Cloverfield association up front, had i NOT known that this was loosey linked to that....man, that would have made the gut punch ending above even MORE gut punchier. and heck, NOT linking the two via "clover field' reference up front MIGHT have even made the actual EXISTING ending a bit more powerful as well you know?
i get the feeling that that (using 'Cloverfield' in the title to this one) was a 'suit' decision....i don't know for sure, but i'd lay my money on it...guessing it was some suit who said...'how we gonna market it f we don't use 'Cloverfield'?' or something. Maybe, maybe not....but i swear, it kinda pisses me off the more that i think about it....

all this needed to be COMPLETELY great was a non-Cloverfield title and to roll credits RIGHT at that top of the car "oh shit!' moment. then BLAM this one would have easily gone to my instant unexpected classics list.

> Everything after that felt disjointed, like a short movie tacked on to
>the main event.
>

>Goodman did his thing, he needs to be in more stuff

yeah i agree. Goodman was really really great in this....fantastic performance.

and just so i'm clear i DID REALLy like the REST of the movie...EVERYTHING up to 'on the car' had me completely invested and interested and intrigued....so its definitely worth seeing for sure because all of that is very very well done and taught.

but ahhhhh...what coulda' been...

like i knew emmett was gonna get it the moment i first saw him on screen. you got your protagonist and your antagonist and then a bonus dude? yeah bonus dudes a goner. so that "shocking" moment was kinda bland for me

and the whole little anecdote about using the spray to knock off doorknobs in the military - pretty obvious that was gonna come back into play for michelle

one thing i'm curious about is if yall think the way the brittany/megan storyline wasn't ever really explicitly resolved was poor storytelling or a bold move? i think most audiences will notice that as a flaw or something that's missing from the movie, but i kinda think the way it was left as a little unresolved is a more interesting way to illustrate that while michelle and emmett work to discover whether howard is right, or crazy, he is in fact right AND crazy

anyway, i liked it. never saw cloverfield, still don't think i will

Brittany was the (attempted) surrogate. And Michelle was supposed to be the next one. There were hints of it throughout (he's not a perv, Emmitt had to fight to get in, etc.), but the obvious tell was during the word game when he couldn't picture her as anything else but a "little princess".

Would have been good without the Cloverfield shit, was just fine with it included as well, did not take anything away.

John Goodman was fantastic.

I hope they keep up with these releases where we don't see or hear anything until a couple months out, and then everyone is talking about how dope this movie looks, AND it delivers.

Great build up of tension throughout and I actually enjoyed the extended alien sequence at the end. Right from the beginning she showed she was capable and creative, and that extended into her fight with the aliens (shout out to Glenvagulin and all the scotch drinkers out there, lol).

If that sequence ends up booting up a more prolific JJ Abrams alien franchise, then I'm all for it.

The "Room" stuff was great. I felt like it started to slip once the woman showed up and you knew it was an alien attack. The stuff with the suit and wanting to make a run for it seemed less sensible. I was hoping for more twists - maybe the younger guy wasn't what he appeared to be either - but I still really enjoyed what was there.

The last act was stupid. It didn't kill the movie for me but it went from an interesting film to a film I'd only recommend as a rental. Also, Explosions in the Sky >>>>> CGI explosions in the sky and aliens and what not. Hollywood should take a look at how a kid lying in the back of a truck is more thrilling and nerve racking than the millions of dollars of CGI they threw in at the end of this flick.

Still, the stuff in the bunker was strong enough to overcome the nonsense at the end. Like with most of stuff Abrams is involved in, I think it's a passable movie but not all that great.

didn't like the first part, when the paradox trailer came on during the super bowl my brother asked me if i saw this one. i was like yeah......oh nah just the first one haha.

will check out paradox soon. kind of want to watch it without reading about it.

would be kind of cool if they managed to actually build a coherent franchise out seemingly loosely connected movies.

Ok so they are clearly from scripts that originally had nothing to do with Cloverfield. Sure.

But here's the thing. When they shoehorned in the Cloverfield connection...why didn't they just show the monster from the first? Or monsters like it? That at least would have made it more clear to the audience that it is in fact related.

But nope. The aliens in this look nothing like the ones from the first movie.

And people keep saying how the one at the end of Paradox is the 'adult' version of the one in the first movie. But if you go back and look at the first movie, that monster looks NOTHING like the one in Paradox. Shit is totally different.

I'm no Hollywood writer but it seems like for all the secrecy and viral marketing and what not, they aren't really thinking this through.

work make IMO

in that the tonal shift is not as sharp because I "knew" it was coming...

well paced, good acting, especially Goodman, and it felt tense.

I didn't buy how those Aliens don't kill her between either of her trying to get to the cars or her murking the king/queen whatever, but I wasn't mad at it either...

gunna watch Paradox tomorrow
