New 'Battlestar Galactica' movie will completely reimagine the sci-fi tale By Rich McCormick on April 7, 2014 08:20 pm
Universal is preparing to start work on a Battlestar Galactica movie. Variety says the studio is planning to completely reimagine the sci-fi story — in which space-bound humans fend off the attacks of nefarious cybernetic Cylons as they try to find a new home — just five years after the four-season Syfy TV show set in the same universe drew to a close. The planned film would mark the second time Battlestar Galactica has been rebooted after the original show aired in 1978.
Jack Paglen, the writer of the upcoming Transcendence, has agreed to write the reboot's screenplay. Paglen is hot property for studios wanting to create sci-fi at the moment: he's also slated to write Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel. Glen Larson, who worked on the 1970s TV series, will produce the film, but there's no confirmation yet on who'll take on the role of director. Bryan Singer was originally attached to a Battlestar Galactica movie project in 2011, but the production was put on hold in 2013 after the director committed to working on new X-Men movies. Having agreed to direct 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, Singer is unlikely to have time to work on developing a new Battlestar.

i'm just now getting around to watching BSG (EXTREMELY LATE, i know), and a season and a half in, this is amazing.
there's no need to "re-imagine" it, certainly not for the blockbuster movie treatment.
i'm afraid to read the archived posts because i don't want any spoilers, but i do have one question -- is it generally agreed that BSG sons babylon 5 and DS9? do they really keep up this level of writing for 4 full seasons?

I never watched Babylon 5, but I can tell you that DS9 is a much different show than BSG. The tone is very different and "quality" is subjective. It really depends on what you like. I loved DS9 and BSG. It's tough for me to say one is better than the other because they were attempting to accomplish different things with their story. I would probably say that DS9 came closer to accomplishing what it set out to do than BSG. That doesn't diminish BSG in my eyes at all. I just think BSG was a little more ambitious and didn't quite get to what they aspired to.

just by the way they were written and produced bsg over all is the tightest series, but ds9 probably ends the most appropriately given people's expectations.

certainly not less than 10 years after it went off the air. and not as a blockbuster.
i guess i can see why it's attractive as a blockbuster with good sequels easily doable. just seems like overkill.
i think doing a big budget movie now after a pretty successful run is quite a bit different from taking a 25-year old, widely derided, kitschy cult tv show and re-formatting it as something interesting and meaningful. after typing that last sentence, i realize that updating BSG was actually not that different from creating star trek: the next generation -- and it would've made as little sense 5 years after TNG went off the air to make the equivalent of today's schlocky new star trek movie franchise.
and i guess *that* is my nagging fear. could be decent, i guess. but it just seems too soon and it could be weak.

You pretty much nailed it. My thoughts precisely. BSG went off the air in 2009. Let's give it some time before we start thinking about re-booting it once again. I'm not against reboots or remakes, but I think studios and networks should do them when it makes sense. Where our views as a society or cultural or television tastes have changed enough since the original that a re-boot would feel fresh and new.

hoping this isn't spoiling but Season 4 of BSG sucked.
Are you watching the BSG with the movies? I watched the BSG series in the timeline order: Caprica > BSG's Blood and chrome > then the series with the movies in between episodes/seasons where it fit along the timeline.
If not, it's still not too late. there are some good viewing guides you can follow.
As far as Babylon 5, that shit is horrible. But I don't like my sci-fi with that silly humor ( I much rather the SG1/SGU humor over Babylon or Firefly). So to level set my taste's I hate Firefly and Baylon 5 but love Sci-fi like SGU, SG11 BSG, and Continuum.

I loved Space: Above and Beyond. I was so pissed when Fox canceled that. Another one, in a long line of FOX Sci Fi shows getting the boot in their first season, except I think this one was really good.
