Props to, Marvel for taking risks.
Peter, was ill BUT you can only do so much with a fictional character. LOL at fans sending death threats.
This should be a rad story, as it unfolds.

i own detective comics #'s 5-10 (1938). i own over 400 detective comics issues, every single walking dead book ever made, almost every EC Comic ever made, every issue of planet hulk, every fabulous furry freak brothers book. once owned ASM 1-350, AF #15. and about 3,000 others.

i also remember when ASM was excellently written and drawn every single issue. since mcfarlane left, there's only a handful of great issues, and lately it's been deplorable. anything to sell copies tho, and of course it's predicted to sell about 250,000 copies, up from 59,000.

do you remember when bane broke batman's back and azrael took over the cowl?

do you remember when superman died and four supermen rose to take his place?

do you remember when captain america became nomad? do you remember when captain america died?

do you remember when batman died and nightwing took on the mantle?

do you really think that peter parker is gone forever?

amazing spider-man #700 was possibly the best ever love letter to peter parker written. dan slott is pretty much the best writer on spider-man for the longest of times. his love for spidey is fucking obvious.

do you really think he doesn't have a plan for all this?

the story opportunity this twist opens up is enormous - and it's gonna be a fun ride.

but i take it you don't want stuff to happen. comics fans don't want change to happen, you want everything to stay the same. who needs plot or story? everything should be resolved immediately.

fuck the internet, man.

His constant addressing of MJ as 'woman', the fact that JJJ is *finally* giving Spider-Man his props for being a 'hero'... That's some fun shit right there.

And of course the deeper questions about what makes us who we are and whether or not people can truly change.

NOPE, not no event shit. This here is thought out and character driven.

Nrama: With the first issue of Superior Spider-Man due out in just a couple weeks, you've obviously started writing Doc Ock in the costume at this point. What are the similarities and differences between the mindset of the two characters?

Slott: When you look at Peter Parker, and the kid he was before he got bit by that radioactive spider, he was an outcast, he was a nerd, he was resentful of all his peers. One of the first things he says is, "Someday, I'll show them all. They'll be sorry they laughed at me." That's one of the first things Peter Parker ever says, when you read Amazing Fantasy #15.

Peter Parker, at that point, is a guy who could have really easily become a supervillain. We're just all lucky he was raised by Aunt May and Uncle Ben, and even being raised by them, he still went on to become a complete jerk until the moment he learned that lesson of "great power" and "great responsibility."

And then you look at Doc Ock. He's the adult that Peter Parker would have become. He's this spectacled nerd. And his first appearance is him saying, "They're all just jealous of my genius." This is what Peter could have become. Doc Ock had an accident with a radioactive experiment, and he became the eight legged, super-powered being. He's almost a shadow version of Peter.

When we first meet Doctor Octopus in the comics, he's already an old guy. We've never seen Doc Ock as a young guy.

is Doc Ock getting a second chance at life, and not just any kind of second chance: He gets to be this young, athletic, handsome superhero with a great job and respect, who is a member of the superhero community. He gets to be accepted in ways that Otto Octavius never was.

And in a weird way, the final gift that Peter Parker gives him is the lesson of great power and great responsibility.

So now he's been sent on the right path.

But we all know he is that arrogant, egotistical Doctor Otto Octavius. What's going to happen now?

He's going to try to be a superhero. He's going to try to take this new lease on life and use it for good. But he's Doc Ock, so of course he's going to do it through his own lens.

That's going to be an interesting journey.

To me, the fun of this is, for years, thanks to J. Jonah Jameson, everyone thought Spider-Man was a menace and the readers knew the whole story. The readers knew this was a good guy, this was a hero who's not getting any breaks. They were rooting for him.

Now we've flipped that. It's the Marvel Universe that doesn't have the whole story, and they think he's a hero. And it's the readers who are going, "No! No! No! No! He's a menace! I don't like him!" The readers have become J. Jonah Jameson.

To me, that's the greatest challenge of all. This character of Superior Spider-Man is the most "meta" Spider-Man you can get.

This Spider-Man is going to have to prove to the readers that he's a hero. That's an exciting journey.

from a story standpoint EVERYTHING he's talking about was done in 699 700 and 15. None of what he's talking about is new ground and I can't see him pulling more than a few stories from this. Now if the arc lasts about as long as the Alpha arc lasted....(and even THAT was too long.) MAYBE - BUT I have a sneaking suspicion that this bullshit is going to last about as long as the 'brand new day' nonsense. It's too much too soon.

...examples. Considering that two of the four are regarded as the biggest missteps, story-wise, in their respective characters' history.

Okay, (well-meaning) snarkiness on my part aside, full-disclosure: While I'm well on the record for believing the entire Spider-Man story line from One More Day and beyond has been a five-year stream of 156 tons of bullshit, I'm not averse to the IDEA of comic book characters getting "new" identities. If done right, they can be highly entertaining, story-wise (see: Winter Soldier becoming Captain America and Nightwing becoming Batman, the other two examples that you listed). I was even okay with Super Patriot becoming Captain America back in the late '80s.

The problem is, of course, almost none of them are done well. They boost sales in the short term, but there's about a 95% chance that they end up a huge bucket of FAIL when it comes to the actual story.

At first blush, this one sounds like it would fall below the right-wing demagogue becoming Captain America and slightly above Vengeance becoming Ghost Rider (it's certainly got a leg up on Az-Bats tho...). Seriously, what exactly about this story-line should get me excited as a comic-book reader? A villain seeks redemption? Not exactly ground-breaking stuff. Slott can natter on all he wants about Doc Ock becoming an alternative Peter Parker all grown up or the readers becoming JJJ, but why should I be excited a 50/60 year old super-villain becoming Spider-Man?

Also, I probably also wouldn't be as skeptical if this didn't come off as part of Marvel's "Let's kill a different super-hero every year to help our marketing! We'll get coverage on MTV!" plan.

Look, I know it's not what you do, but how you do it, but given the history, this shit is "Clone Saga" status until they prove otherwise.

...doesn't make it a good idea to do so, whether you've been planning it for 100 issues or not.

>just that the status quo before long was restored.
>
>this is comics.

Which is why lots of long-time comic book fans see this and roll their eyes. C'mon dude, you know that comic book fans aren't complaining on the Internet just because Doc Ock is now Spider-Man; it's because they've seen this movie 20,000 times and 19,990 times it has blown goats. If you follow history, despite any strong opening issues, the vast majority of these things start to suck rather quickly. So people can't exactly say, "Well, give it a chance!" without acknowledging that there isn't exactly a good track record for this type of thing.

>and, with all due respect, mrhood
>
>have you been reading dan slott's spider-man?

I leaf throguh it on the stands. I still stand by my "I'm not buying Spider-Man post BND" pledge, but I occasionally look through the issues while I'm in the store. I'll say the same thing I always have, best BND, nothing's been done that's exactly blowing the doors off the hinges.

Was Spider Island that good?

I disagree, but I understand.

Not to ride the fence here but I do think it's possible to hate on a premise rationally... just so long as you're not jumping to conclusions about the execution.

So 'this idea is wack to me' is perfectly valid and impossible to argue with in its subjectivity. But 'they should've wrapped it up in 2 issues', is mind boggling to me. The bullshit wheel-spinning our comics get away with these days, and you want THIS to be a 2-issue arc. It's taken the Fantastic Four 4 issues and 2 titles just to get into a spaceship and leave the Baxter Building.

I mean, mind-swapping and supervillain redemption are nothing new, but the specifics of this particular set-up has loads of potential. I have trouble seeing how people can't see that this could easily propel a book for a year or two - even if it's a book they themselves wouldn't want to read.

I get what you’re trying to say, but just because other comics draw shit out for dubious reasons doesn’t mean that this one has to be, or that people have to like it.
That said, I think the familiarity with the idea is why a lot of people think it could/should be 2-3 issues since that’s the typical length of a mind-swap superhero story. My honest reaction to the “twist” in 698 was that, if Marvel didn’t announce it as a big thing, no one would have treated it was supposed to be one. It’s such a standard plotline that the elevation to Big New Thing makes it feel more artificial than it really needs to.

I don’t necessarily think that the book’s detractors are saying that it can’t run for X amount of years (or whenever the next new Spidey movie comes out), just that they’re not feeling the idea. Shit, Cap-Wolf could have run for at least 10.

It's built off such a familiar story trope, but they're going all in with it and (hopefully) really exploring the full story potential.

Yes, 2 issues would be plenty if it was that kinda story. I've watched 22 minute cartoons that covered the basics. BUT... that's boring at this point. To launch a whole new title off of something like this? Maybe I'm a sucker but they've got my attention. It's a plot we've learned to take for granted but based on what's gone down in the past 2 issues this story has already surprised me a couple times with the beats it's hitting and the way it's paced.

Look, there's no reason 'zombie attack' should necessitate 100+ issues and a tv series but it's surprising what happens when the right guy gets his hands on a familiar idea. And I don't even like that shit! But not because it's too long.

>I get what you’re trying to say, but just because other comics

Never said anyone had to like it, but you're right. No point in bringing up wacker shit as some kind of defense. But I am kinda annoyed at this new F4 direction so if anyone wants to talk about that, my office hours are posted.

See, I'm not getting the artificial thing at all, either. I thought the last couple issues had a lot of heart. Slott has his flaws but I've never found a lack of sincerity to be one of them.

Hating on the premise + lack of faith in the creative team = Basically why I'm not reading All-New X-Men. So I can relate.

But some of y'all about to be on the wrong side of history in regards to this whole Superior Spider-Man thing.

Eh, my problem is that nothing that happened has came close to surprising me. Even the way this will all be undone is telegraphed. Which is also why I can't understand the uproar.

Isn't that Fraction's typical MO? I haven't read his Fantastic Four, precisely because I haven't read a Fraction comic that I've actually liked, but 2 issues of nothing happening seems typical.

Well, I'm talking about the marketing more than the writing in that instance. You market something as an event and people are going to treat it as such. I think that Marvel's marketing of it is actually coloring the response to it in a way that the story doesn't deserve (positively and negatively), but it'll get a temporary sales bump which is all that matters to the bean counters.

>Hating on the premise + lack of faith in the creative team =

Honestly, I don't even hate the premise, I just find it pretty meh. I'm far from a Spider-Man fan so that may be coloring my non-reaction to it all.

As for All-New X-Men - I think Bendis' writing is about as enjoyable as Loeb's, however, I read the first couple issues on a whim, and really liked them. Bendis seemed like he was fighting against all his traditional annoying habits. I was about to make a post about it, then the most recent one dropped, and his typical BS started seeping back in. Bastard almost got me!

But I do agree that the hype factor is skewing things on both sides. It's ridiculous.

Also, you might wanna check out Fraction's Hawkeye? That joint's the outlier right there.

I actually may break and try to check that out. I haven't heard one negative thing about that book yet...besides Fraction's name attached. I'll probably give it a go.

In response to Reply # 57

With Doom forcing Reed Richards to switch bodies with him. He set it up, hit all the right notes, and resolved it. Granted, the dynamic between the character is slightly different, but the underlying foundation was strikingly similar. And I'm not even really a Millar fan.

Side note: Bendis also did a two-part "Freaky Friday" arc is Ultimate Spider-Man, where Spidey and Wolverine switched bodies. He prefaced the second issue with, "Even **I** can't stretch this beyond two issues." Those two issues were obviously written with tongue firmly in cheek.

Anywho, again, I'm not against switching hero identities, but this one REALLY does nothing to excite me. If they want to do this (which they certainly do), I could indeed seeing them stretching it out for a year, year and a half. I think anything beyond that would get tiresome. I could have done with MORE of the Winter Soldier as Captain America (and bear in mind, Steve Rogers is one of my favorite characters ever), Doc Ock playing the Spidey role does nothing for me.

A few years ago I was reading the letters pages from some old Lee/Ditko ASM's and noticed that even when the book was less than a year old, fan mail was coming in asking them to give Pete a break.

Big Time was fun and I genuinely enjoyed seeing Pete succeed on so many fronts... but deep down I knew the other shoe had to drop. And I don't know that he even has it worse than any other superheroes, I think he's just likable and relatable in a way that makes his hard knocks resonate more.

You're responses have shown that you are, indeed, the cool kid, and not an evil, basement dwelling comic nerd. I get it, ok?

I now recognize that Dan Slott secretly ghostwrote Maus, Watchmen, All-Star Superman, and Blankets. It was foolish of me to think that the new and original idea of a body switch, tacted onto the new and original idea or a villain's redemtion, by such a giant of the industry, would be anything less than orgasm inducing. I apologize to my PTP brethren for my sin.

In order to course correct and be sure that the coolest cool no longer thinks that I'm just like those other ugly, smelly, co-splaying, angry comic strawmen, I'll go out and buy every issue of Superior, and eagerly await the sensitivity and nuance that I'm sure Doc Ock impending rape of Mary Jane will have.

Better now?

And I got a bunch of good brews for Christmas - threw a Saison Dupont in the fridge this morning. I've recently, for some reason or another, become interested in reading some Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and/or Heroes for Hire stories, either the old ones, or the new ones, doesn't matter.

What do you guys recommend? Is the MAX series, Cage, any good? Immortal Iron Fist? The original Heroes for Hire books?

MP is def the best 'Big Idea' comic I've ever read.

Fatale is definitely the best horror comic I've ever read (or horror anything I've ever been entertained by, I think), and the noirish elements only make it better.

I think I find Fatale more visceral - I feel it in the gut when I read it. And MP just makes me laugh.

I just dunno, not that it matters. They probably have an equal OH SHIT factor to them, and I can't see myself ever getting tired of either (though at issue 10 or so for each, that's a prediction I've made before only to drop the book later).

This being a sequel to DKR, and a Frank Miller Batman comic, I understand there must've been a lot of expectations for readers going into this. Coupled with the fact that this book is crazier than a shithouse rat, I can see why it was so disappointing to fans.

Buuuuuut so far I'm kind of loving it in a weird way? Reserving final judgement until I finish it of course, but there are some really ridiculous/ill visuals (also: some very ugly ones), and the storytelling is so gleefully absurd yet still so Millery in that noirish beat poet kind of way that I honestly can't tell whether or not he's taking the piss. Is it meta commentary? Comic book shock jocking? Is it just kind of bad, maybe?

Your thoughts, PTP? I'm gonna need some analysis on this one.
