"10 Simple Questions About Hitchcock (A survey of sorts)"
Fri Nov-28-08 02:24 AM by DubSpt

Brought on by all the Hitchcock watching and re-watching I've done in the past two weeks, including a viewing of "The Birds" with a bird that made me very happy.

So heeeeeere we go....

1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen?

2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie?

3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?

4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the article, which movie do you hope it is?

9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they have never seen a Hitchcock movie before. After slapping them in the face, what do you recommend as their first exposure to Hitchcock, and why?

- Dub

I give rappers the biz for being m-izza-a-archaic.

cause I'm good like that.

>1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen?
23 and counting.

>2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie?
Strangers On A Train.

>3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?
Psycho. And sometimes I wish it hadn't been, cause it colored my view of what a Hitchcock movie was supposed to be for the next several that I saw. First time I saw Rear Window I was disappointed in the "twist." Stupid me.

>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?
Marnie or Foreign Correspondent. At least those are two that I think get talked about half as much as they should.

>5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?
Vertigo. Now I am not saying its a bad movie, not in the least, BUT I do know that I have to be in a very specific mood to love it. I've seen it close to 10 times, and about half of those times I have been bored to tears. But I keep watching cause I know when I am in the mood I love it. So I guess my issue with it is the extremely high praise it gets. I mean, Favre is good, but he isn't the best quarterback ever. I'd be alot happier if "Rear Window" was regarded as the GOAT Hitchcock film.

>6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.
True. Duh.

>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?
As usual, I'm going with Cary on this one.

>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock
>movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the
>article, which movie do you hope it is?
Frenzy. Two reasons: a) Because I know it will never happen, and b) because I think it would be conducive to a gritty, "realistic" retelling.

>9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?
I have about three on my DVR, but I think I may go rent "Lifeboat" instead.

>10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they
>have never seen a Hitchcock movie before. After slapping them
>in the face, what do you recommend as their first exposure to
>Hitchcock, and why?
Suspicion. For starters, the name basically sums up everything you need to know about Hitchcock. Secondly, you've got one of the iconic Hitchcock leading men in Cary Grant. It also has several memorable scenes, a relatively short running time, some humor, some romance, and a little bit of action. In short, its everything Hitchcock has to offer, and it whets your appetite for bigger and better things.

Can't believe I didn't think about it, but my actual answer for this is "The Lady Vanishes." Marnie and Foreign Correspondent are cool, but they can't touch The Lady Vanishes. Easily in my top 5 Hitchcock flicks.

None of 'em.

These are the ones from my instant queue to watch:

Saboteur
Marnie
Torn Curtain
Family Plot
Topaz
The Trouble With Harry
Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Notorious. It's got it all. Leading man, beautiful lady in distress, and their romance. Lot of suspense. Great sets and cinematography.

If not that one, North by Northwest. To me, that one is the most "fun." It's almost like a James Bond movie.

not funny
very predictable
very unimpressive visually given it's hitchcock
i don't feel any involvement with the characters

...most of all, it's boring

it's probably the only hitchcock movie i've seen so far that i flat out don't like on some level

1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen?

About 13 (I'm getting a couple of them confused in my head).

>2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie?

Cousin, we'll be here all day. Let's see, depending on the day...Psycho, Vertigo, The Birds, I really love Rope.

>3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?

Psycho, or To Catch A Thief. AMC used to have Hitchcock Sundays, and the first one was one or the other. The first one I saw on the big screen was Psycho.

>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

He did an excellent job with The Lodger. Seriously. The number of times that movie's been made, how well it works on page, I was actually impressed with what he did with it. Rope is another good example. It's not just an "experiment" movie. It works very well. Oh, and The Lady Vanishes - great movie!

>5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

Is there such a thing? Well, I can tell you the two films of his I'm not overly hype about are Foreign Correspondant and The Trouble With Harry. Maybe the "not funny" humor of Harry is what bugs me.

>6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

Close but no cuban. Grace Kelly in "Rear Window".

>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

Jimmy Stewart, all the way.

>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock
>movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the
>article, which movie do you hope it is?

NONE OF THEM. Read this next part very closely, because one day someone may ask you (and you want to have the right answer). THERE IS NO DIRECTOR WORKING TODAY WHO DOES IT AS WELL AS HITCHCOCK.

>9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

You know, I've never seen Notorious or North By Northwest.

>10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they
>have never seen a Hitchcock movie before. After slapping them
>in the face, what do you recommend as their first exposure to
>Hitchcock, and why?

Psycho. I think it is the best example of his work. Plus, if you're gonna start them on something, start them on the one one Hitchcock film EVERYBODY should have seen, regardless of how much/little of a cinephile they are.
I will say this, his movies are some of the better date movies. I mean, is there a director with such a breadth that any two people can agree on?

fun post, good work.

His movies work extraordinarily well with a date. See also: The Birds.

I agree 100%. Thank God for TCM for letting me see this one, even without sound I was enrapt the entire time. Actually, I saw this several years ago, I really want to watch it again.

I've never met anybody that likes The Trouble With Harry. Just sayin.

*blank stare*
Two excellent date pictures. Notorious if you already have a steady girl, North By Northwest if she's a new girl.

>1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen?

i counted 15.

>2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie?

Rear Window

>3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?

Psycho, i think.

>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

To Catch a Thief. I guess it's not really underrated but it never gets mentioned among his greats. It's such a lightweight film in comparison to his other stuff, but damn if it's not perfect.

>5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

Psycho. I guess i should see it again. I get why it's considered great but it feels like one of those "had to be there" movies to truly appreciate (see: easy rider).

>6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

Ava Gardner in The Killers is my choice, but yeah Grace looks amazing in it. Random fact: My gradma told me that Jimmy Stewart is the only lead Grace worked with that she didn't sleep with.

>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

no man. just no.

>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock
>movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the
>article, which movie do you hope it is?

The Birds i guess. manily because i still haven't seen it so i have no real reason to be outraged

>9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

Torn Curtain

>10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they

Notorious ese. Notorious.

>1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen?

I'm pretty sure it's somewhere around ten.

>2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie?

North By Northwest

>3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?

Psycho

>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

I've yet to see any that aren't incredibly high rated.

>5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

Out of what I've seen, Strangers on A Train. That's not to say that it's bad, it just didn't do anything for me.

>6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

Haven't seen that one.

>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

Cary Grant.

>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock

I hope it's a misprint.

>9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

Well, To Catch a Thief, to peep miss Kelly. I think Dial M for Murder and Rope are still on my DVR, so I should watch those.

>10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they

Easily North By Northwest. If you don't like that film, you clearly just don't like movies and should go read a book.

1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen? All of the Hollywood productions except Topaz. He already had an extensive filmography in Britain.

2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie? Shadow of a Doubt

3) What was your first Hitchcock movie? Suspicion

4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie? Marnie

5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie? Psycho

6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

False. Look up Rita Hayworth or Dorothy Dandridge.

7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart? Cary Grant

8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock
movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the
article, which movie do you hope it is? I hope that none of them are ever remade again.

9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list? Whatever shows up on TCM.

10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they
have never seen a Hitchcock movie before. After slapping them
in the face, what do you recommend as their first exposure to
Hitchcock, and why?

Shadow of a Doubt. It's a relatively straight-forward thriller.

And I'm not going any further with this. Do your own homework.:0)

Probably Psycho. Seems to be his signature work.

Most deft, I Confess. But first i'de point out that Hitchcock didnt makes movies...he made FILMS........cinematography in his films are great! His subject matter appeals to the logos, ethos and the pathos! i havent met anyone who really appreciates shit like me....so i'de expect that i lost them somewhere between movies and pathos.......

I usually see films by myself.....

Vertigo

3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?

Psycho

>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

Shadow of a Doubt...I mean, I think everyone knows it's great but I put it in Hitch's top 3, and I don't think most people do that

5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

Psycho I guess

6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

Falso...Faye Dunaway in Bonnie & Clyde, Bibi Andersson in Wild Strawberries, Claudia Cardinale in anything come to mind right away

>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

Jimmy

>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock

NA

9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

Rebecca! Where the F is a DVD??!

10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they

North By Northwest maybe....why? I dunno...it's easy to enjoy, and would instantly put a positive impression of Hitchcock in this friend's brain

>1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen?

I honestly don't know. Mainly the mid 50s-early 60s films.

>2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie?

North By Northwest, no contest.

>3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?

Psycho

>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

Of the ones I've seen, Rope.

>5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

Hmm. I don't think I've seen enough yet.

>6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

False as hell.

>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

That's tough. I'm gonna go with Cary Grant.

>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock
>movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the
>article, which movie do you hope it is?

Rear Window, just because I could see it working in a modern setting without grossly disappointing those who love the original.

>9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

Strangers on a Train

>10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they

I'd recommend Vertigo or NXNW just because those are two great ones and I think they're accessible.
I'm not writing a short essay, lol. I'm still a Hitchcock baby.

I saw that - I remember the crazy Dali scenes vaguely. I have to look at that again. Me and the wife always argue about who's the best "Grant or Peck". But Ingrid sure was a looker as well as her daughter Issie.

>1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen?

10

the 39 steps, the lady vanishes, suspicion, notorious, strangers on a train, dial m for murder, rear window, to catch a thief, vertigo, north by northwest

>2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie?

probably north by northwest, but it is tough to choose

>3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?

hmm...i saw dial m for murder, vertigo, and north by northwest in my teenage years...i can't really remember which first

>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

of those that i've seen, probably the 39 steps...that ending is so damn exciting

>5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

i would have said rear window a couple months ago, but then i saw it again...probably strangers on a train

>6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

you know?...i think so

>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

cary grant for sure...i'm not a huge fan of stewart

>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock
>movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the
>article, which movie do you hope it is?

hmm...probably vertigo...i think that type of story could survive a remake

>9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

checking my netflix...i've got rope, psycho, and both versions of the man who knew too much (i kinda think i've seen one of them when i was about 10, but i didn't count it) all in a row

>10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you they
>have never seen a Hitchcock movie before. After slapping them
>in the face, what do you recommend as their first exposure to
>Hitchcock, and why?

i would go with north by northwest, for sure...it seems to me that it is the most like a modern film of anything hitchcock did...is it his best?...maybe not...but there is a lot of action and suspense, and the most likely to be "enjoyed" by an average 2008 moviegoer

oh wow. honestly "north by northwest" is probably my favorite movie EVER, so i'd likely go with that. barring that, it'd undoubtedly be "dial m for murder." NBNW because of the pacing, the plot, the performances, and the plane scene. DM4M because of the plot.

Vertigo

>3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?

The Birds

>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

The Lady Vanishes

>5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

Rope. It's a gimmick film.

>6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

Top ten, for sure.

>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

Jimmy. The Hitchcock leading man needs to, at some point in the film, feel totally out of control. Cary Grant is just too smooth, even when things are going bad.

>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock
>movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the

Just not necessary.

>9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

Shadow of a Doubt

North by Northwest. It's fun, quick, in color (if this film has never seen Hitchock, this will actually matter), and relatively light on dialogue. If you don't like this movie, you'll never like anything Hitch made.

I have no issue with it being studied in film schools because of its gimmick, but other than that I'd put it closer to the bottom of my list than the top.

This also has me wondering which other of Hitchcock's films could really be called gimmicky?
He tries doing the color thing in Marnie, "realism" in The Wrong Man, and comedy in Mr & Mrs Smith and The Trouble With Harry, but I don't know if I would call any of them gimmicky per se.

Lifeboat is kind of a gimmick. Or at least a theatrical contrivance.

Sometimes gimmicks work, if they are made to serve a larger goal. I don't feel like it happened with Rope. Impressive technical and logistical feat, yes. Successful film, no. Just like Russian Ark.

On the gimmick front, anybody seen Dial M for Murder in actual 3D?

I'd prolly say Psycho, it was my first exposure to his work and I think it would draw someone in easier than his other work, esp. folks that aren't into older movies.

>>1) How many Hitchcock movies have you seen?

Nine.

>>2) What is your favorite Hitchcock movie?

North by Northwest but I think Notorious could displace it when I've seen it again.

>>3) What was your first Hitchcock movie?
North by North West kind of by accident but I enjoyed it so much that it got me into Hitchcock in a big way.

>>4) What is the most underrated Hitchcock movie?

Maybe the 39 Steps because it was pre-hollywood but without the 39 steps there would be no North by Northwest.

>>5) Conversely, what is the most overrated Hitchcock movie?

Vertigo - its very good but it is often talked about as his best and in my opinion its not top three.

>>6) True or False: Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief" is the
>>most beautiful any woman has ever appeared in film.

I believe this to be true.

>>7) Better Hitchcock leading man: Cary Grant or Jimmy
>Stewart?

Cary Grant all day every day.

>>8) You've just read a movie studio is remaking a Hitchcock
movie (No Van Sant-o). Before reading the rest of the
article, which movie do you hope it is?

To Catch a Thief (would be the one most likely to be re-made which could be improved upon and which would do well at the box office. Despite playing a similar character in the re-make of Oceans 11 and its follow ups I could see George Clooney doing the Cary Grant role in a remake of TCaT. Who would they get to be the modern day Grace Kelly? For box office appeal I guess Angelina but I could see Catherine Zeta Jones play the part well.

>>9) What is next on your "Hitchcock To See" list?

I've now seen all the best known films made by him but I've got another 20 or so in various Hitchcock box sets to enjoy. I don't know where to start, any suggestions greatly appreciated. Actually I'm yet to see Spellbound so i guess that will be next.

>>10) And now, the short essay portion - A friend tells you
they have never seen a Hitchcock movie before. After slapping
them in the face, what do you recommend as their first exposure
to Hitchcock, and why?

Very difficult choice. A lot of people I know find it difficult to sit through "classics" (read: old films) but I would suggest Notorious or Psycho. But i think both films should be enjoyed after having seen a few Hitchcock films as I believe those two to be near/at the top of his best film list.

though the fact that you've seen 9 still leaves a lot. I've seen 30+ and there's STILL Hitch movies I need to see.

Though knowing how much you like The 39 Steps and North By Northwest I'd recommend these to start:
Foreign Correspondent
Saboteur (not the same as Sabotage)
The Lady Vanishes
Young & Innocent

oh yeah, and Spellbound is incredible if you have that handy.
