And a shit load of other clearly better films. Box office sales don't equal a great film, otheriwse u'd think that those new Star Wars films are actually the best of the bunch and that Michael Bay is a better filmmaker than Scorsese.

If you seriously think Tyler Perry is anywhere close to a good a filmmaker as QT than u need to get a hold of your pharmacist to get your meds refilled. Terry Perry is a couple notches below a tv movie writer and yet ppl get caught up in some bs hype that is created.

The trailers weren't filled w/buffoonery for once, and the plot looks interesting.

Plus I'm intrested to see how TP works white characters into his story.

It's his best movie, the only one that comes close is Why Did I Get Married

Free of buffoonery, great performances by Sanaa and Robin Givens, though because a lot of the movie's plot is tied into a workplace environment, I kept picturing Robin as Jacqueline from Boomerang, lol

I enjoyed the chemistry between Alfre Woodard and Cathy Bates as well.

Great movie, I'll be buying the dvd when it comes out.

probably TP's best work yet. Very melodramatic, but that's his thing. Great performances from everybody, except Rockmund Dunbar, who TP wrote as the most clueless man to ever exist. Also, Cole Hauser turned in a very wooden performance, but I think that's the type of person he was supposed to be playing, a very stiff and wooden man with little personality.

It was nice seeing Sanaa play a villain, as opposed to her good girl/woman-who's-always-hurt roles she usually plays. And although I don't condone domestic violence, Rockmund backhanding her across her mother's diner counter was a great scene. I don't agree with it, but I understand (c) Chris Rock.

TP left out a lot of the clowning that's done in his other movies, since this was a straight drama as opposed to the drama/comedy he usually does. A pretty good movie, but I know that most all of you will hate it, and probably never see it until it comes on TBS or TNT......

I felt...weird when that scene happened. Mainly because I was with a lady and in a theatre filled largely with women. They're going nuts and I'm like "Why?"

I guess she deserved but she didn't, youknow? And nobody slapped the men (well except for that punch, but still)

anyone who's watched enough TP knew that slap was coming, I telegraphed it from a mile away. I didn't think he'd knock her over the counter though. And at the theater where I saw it, most of the women (and the 5 gay dudes sitting next to me*) all hooped and hollered as well.....

*I don't know for certain if they were gay, but 5 guys coming to see a TP movie in midtown ATL, while sharing 2 large buckets of popcorn between them seems really gay to me......

You'd think they'd try giving Tyler some more screens. Disaster Movie gets 600 more screens? So does Bangkok Dangerous? Shit like The Condemned and Delta Farce get similar releases to Tyler.

The studio gives the Saw movies 3000 screens. Why not give Tyler a shot?

1.) as said upthread, probably his best movie. acting was good, the tone was a nice balance between comedy and melodrama, the message was good, it was funny and kept me engaged.

2.) if there is a nitpick, its that the SANAA LATHAN/ROCKMON DUNBAR relationship is SOOOO unbelievable that it becomes hard to watch.

3.) Also agree upthread with the 'mixed feelings' at the rockman/sanaa climax...Woman CHEERED at that part! I cheered on the inside, but thought it was wrong to be happy that dude pimpsmacked ol' girl.

4.) All the women looked BANGING

5.) Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard did there thing, and managed to do a black/white buddy movie that - unlike most hollywood outings - left both on equal footing when it was all over.

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.

Would mos def recommend ...

Because I can see that he is getting out there and doing the shit. He's just doing it. And he's not worried about his brand or level of success dictating what level he starts out on at each project.

He just gets it done. Which is half of what creating is at the end of the day.

The best part is that his shit is getting better.

This looks promising. I know folk are going to hate, but I'm actually interested in seeing this one.

The movie with Jill scott and the cheating husband wasn't bad. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad at all.

he knows what he is doing.

The fact that he came within one million of the Coens, whose box office may have been boosted by the Oscar win, shows that TP isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Also, this wasn't even a Madea movie.

And I don't understand that snobby dislike of melodrama as a genre. So the over-the-top nature of melodrama was cool in the 50s and 60s but it can't be now? GTFOHWTBS.

I bet bignick's stabbing the hell out of that TP voodoo doll.

I think he's on that "hopefully my audience will go and grow with me" type vibe. I think as long as he doesn't go too far left or right from his core audience, he will do just fine.

*from a filmmaking standpoint, not a Tyler Perry standpoint.

Henceforth, jonz'll just wait for family to get & play his movies or plays on dvd.

It was good filmmaking because it delivered a clever,
entertaining story, with good acting, that was paced
very well. The camera work was clean, there were few
if any plot holes, botched characters or concepts.

That's called good filmmaking.

Taylor Perry is a good filmmaker.

In response to Reply # 64

i did.

why?

~ the movie was funny.

~ the acting was good.

~ the women were hot

~ the characters were pretty well drawn out (except sanaa and rockmond) and were very relatable to me.

~ it was a black theater. folks clapped, gasped, sucked teeth, and laughed at the appropriate moment, which lent a party like atmosphere to things.

~ i dug the story.

all that equals =

it was a good movie.

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.

Reminded me of DOMBW which was a horrendous film that would have been a complete disaster w/o K. Elise. The family that preys has several great performances but the plot is totally unbelievable. Lathan's relationship with both the husband and her lover were both so unbelievable. WDIGM is still his best film to date

If you can forgive the Deus ex Machina, its a pretty good movie. TP made the first movie in which I loved Robin Givens. The scene between Robin Givens and S. Latham was as good as a show down between any two black woman I have ever scene on screen.

I liked that scene too. I always thought Robin was a decent actress. That Tyson affair gave her such a bad reputation. She might have been a golddigger then but Tyson smacked her around and got a pass for it. After her fall Halle got more popular IMO a real shame because she just ain't that talented.

She plays the vamp so well though. Weren't you just waiting for Robin Givens to do something real F'd up the entire movie? Turns out she was one of the good guys. Strong smart sister, married to a brother, looking out for the younger sisters in the office.
