DOMI is 19 J.D. Beck is 16. They played with Thundercat. They caught the attention of Skrillex and will.i.am. Anderson Paak is producing their debut album.
...and the writer describes their music like this:
"It’s sparkly, relentlessly melodic, infused with familiar reference points from funk, neo-soul, the left-field hip-hop of J. Dilla and Madlib, the electronic breaks of Aphex Twin and the loading-screen jingles of Nintendo — like playing Mario Kart while your roommate chops up Pharoah Sanders samples on his laptop."

Based on this vid, I see their skilled at playing but it says nothing about their ability to create. And I’m not feeling dudes double timing on the drums for no good reason.
I’m only getting bedroom music nerd vibes from these kids. Would love to hear more and be proven wrong tho.
I'm curious to hear what they make too. The platform and names surrounding them is there. Part of me wanted to add to the original post something about the opportunity for young Black kids getting into jazz, but I was tired...ha.

To be fair to Anderson, I have to think the somewhat odd time signature for the main part of the song gave him some trouble in regards to his flow. At the end of the day, this was Domi & JD Beck's song, and they did more than delivery, so I'm not upset with the song overall.
On a positive note, the extra bit of bass from the Kimmel performance melds with Domi & JD Beck's harmonizing in the chorus so perfectly. I wonder if they'll do a proper US tour for this album. I'd love to hear this song live. I never thought they'd have such great vocals based on all those prior Youtube clips with their drumming and keyboard skills.

I'm feeling it, but I wish there weren't rappers on it; that's not what I'm here for. as a matter of fact, toss Thundercat's vocals in there, too (I've never been a big fan of him on the mic). Herbie and the other guy are cool, tho. the instrumental joints are great.
I was looking forward to grabbing this on vinyl, but as it stands, I'll probably just pick out a few of my favorite joints to get digitally.

IS THE SUPPORT THAT BLACK MALE ARTISTS ARE giving these artists I have a friend who is a dope jazz artist and musician who named her album Ya'll Don't (Really) Care About Black Women (Verve)
and she talks about the sort of sexism that happens in this world still. and I have heard stories about some of your favorite contemporary black jazz cats
so it's kind of ironic to see these young white girls get so much love.
