3030691, Thundercat protégés: DOMi and J.D. Beck Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Thu Mar-11-21 11:14 AM
These kids are jazz musicians.
DOMI is 19 J.D. Beck is 16. They played with Thundercat. They caught the attention of Skrillex and will.i.am. Anderson Paak is producing their debut album.
Here's the NYT article. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/03/10/magazine/jd-beck-domi.html
...and the writer describes their music like this:
"It’s sparkly, relentlessly melodic, infused with familiar reference points from funk, neo-soul, the left-field hip-hop of J. Dilla and Madlib, the electronic breaks of Aphex Twin and the loading-screen jingles of Nintendo — like playing Mario Kart while your roommate chops up Pharoah Sanders samples on his laptop."
Here's their MF DOOM tribute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYKwotHRdHo
Now you know what I know.

they're incredibly skilled and incredibly dope

3030773, I need to hear original work from them before I pass judgement Posted by sersey, Tue Mar-16-21 10:09 PM
Based on this vid, I see their skilled at playing but it says nothing about their ability to create. And I’m not feeling dudes double timing on the drums for no good reason.
I’m only getting bedroom music nerd vibes from these kids. Would love to hear more and be proven wrong tho.

I'm curious to hear what they make too. The platform and names surrounding them is there. Part of me wanted to add to the original post something about the opportunity for young Black kids getting into jazz, but I was tired...ha.

All, or almost all, original music from what I remember.
Along with the Zildjian performance linked below, you gotta be some kinda jaded to not be prety excited about these two.
Had a lot of fun following their Youtube page over the summer last year too, just two kids locked up in a house making two minute clips, having fun.

3037626, Based on something I just saw on instagram Posted by Numba_33, Mon Apr-25-22 12:25 PM
They are signed as a duo to Anderson Paak's imprint label. That is stellar news in an artistic sense.
I hope Paak and his label will guide them in a business sense so that their projects will see the light of day.

A bit more subdue than that I expected, but this isn't too bad.
Judging by the cameos, I'm hoping those folks will appear in collaborative efforts on the new album.

3038435, Their debut album will drop July 29th. Posted by Numba_33, Thu Jun-23-22 12:17 PM
They also dropped what appears to be cover art along with track listing.
I hope that album captures the frenetic playing the majority of their youtube live clips seemed to convey.

I'm impressed/surprised how great their voices sound on the chorus.

3038853, chorus is hard Posted by grey, Sat Jul-23-22 08:53 PM
the harmonies are incredible. like their voices a lot.
pretty lackluster bars from paak tho and i generally like his raps. wish he was singing on this one throughout.
(edit: fucked their names up ha)

To be fair to Anderson, I have to think the somewhat odd time signature for the main part of the song gave him some trouble in regards to his flow. At the end of the day, this was Domi & JD Beck's song, and they did more than delivery, so I'm not upset with the song overall.
On a positive note, the extra bit of bass from the Kimmel performance melds with Domi & JD Beck's harmonizing in the chorus so perfectly. I wonder if they'll do a proper US tour for this album. I'd love to hear this song live. I never thought they'd have such great vocals based on all those prior Youtube clips with their drumming and keyboard skills.

3038887, yea its a tough track to rap over Posted by grey, Mon Jul-25-22 11:35 AM
which is why i think singing would have served him a lil better. agree with you though, wasnt mad at it. looking forward to more from them.

I'm still listening. I dig it so far.

3038982, off a casual listen Posted by Options, Sun Jul-31-22 07:03 PM
I'm feeling it, but I wish there weren't rappers on it; that's not what I'm here for. as a matter of fact, toss Thundercat's vocals in there, too (I've never been a big fan of him on the mic). Herbie and the other guy are cool, tho. the instrumental joints are great.
I was looking forward to grabbing this on vinyl, but as it stands, I'll probably just pick out a few of my favorite joints to get digitally.

3038983, WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS ALBUM Posted by madwriter, Sun Jul-31-22 08:12 PM
IS THE SUPPORT THAT BLACK MALE ARTISTS ARE giving these artists I have a friend who is a dope jazz artist and musician who named her album Ya'll Don't (Really) Care About Black Women (Verve)
and she talks about the sort of sexism that happens in this world still. and I have heard stories about some of your favorite contemporary black jazz cats
so it's kind of ironic to see these young white girls get so much love.

3052987, Saw them live recently Posted by Numba_33, Sat Sep-26-26 11:20 AM
Was very glad I did as they definitely have chops in a live setting.
The crux of the show was stuff from the second album. I was somewhat disappointed they didn't sing, but I understand given how much energy JD Beck puts into his drumming while live.
What did folks here think of the second album? Have to admit the singing took a second for me to get accustomed to, but I like the harmonized vocals for the most part. I also think the second album is miles ahead of the first album as the first album almost feels like a series of compromises with all the collaborations on it.
Definitely interesting in seeing how the two will progress going forward given how they are still relatively young.
