"New Release Friday - 2020-11-13"

Aesop Rock is on the agenda for sure, what else is everyone checking for?

Valerie June has a new three-song release, "Stay/Stay Meditation/You And I," that is short but amazing (already listened three times through, lol, and will probably go back for more later -- just perfect for right now, both the times and the seasonal shift to cold).

Jamael Dean has a new solo piano set, Ished Tree.

Salaam Remi's "Black on Purpose" is out today, too...

I saw a lot more but what are you excited about?

Happy listening.

Other than a few too many skits, really good project. Always got love for lofi samples/ loops.

checked it out earlier and really enjoyed it. There is a nice contrast between their rapping styles and all of the beats are dope.

If I can dig to find one positive about the pandemic, it’s that I’ve listened to a lot more new music. And I’ve been buying a lot more of it too.

5. "Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings - Lost Songs vol 3"
In response to Reply # 0

This is the last volume of a three-part set totaling 48 previously unreleased songs (!) written between her debut and the Soul Journey lp.

I know that there aren't as many Gillian or singer-songwriter fans around here these days but for some perspective, prior to this year Gillian and Dave had only released one studio lp since 2003 (Harrow and the Harvest, 2011).

This year they dropped an album of covers (All the Good Times are Past and Gone) and this 48 song set with virtually no notice. Even when the first volume of this set dropped, it was unclear how big the final set would be. That's virtually the *total* amount of material we got out of them before they sort of went dark in 2003, lol. So for fans, this year has been an amazing treat (maybe the only blessing amidst this dumpster fire).

And it's all really good, the only downside being that it isn't very shaped in terms of sequencing -- it's very much, here's 60 songs, enjoy. But there's something fitting about that and I've already found so many favorites and look forward to finding more as I feast on this for a long time to come.

This NYTimes article (super long, really good) talks a bit about their abundant output this year and how it has come about:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/03/magazine/gillian-welch-david-rawlings.html

Even if you're not an americana/folk person, if you haven't heard them before you should at least listen to her voice. (But if you're coming to her for the first time, start with the first record, Revival)

Black Thought on 5 songs.
Cee-Lo
Common
Nas
Teedra Moses
Doug E. Fresh
....somehow Case is on here?!?

Remi be putting out really good stuff that I wouldn't even knew existed if it wasn't for Spotify.

Gonna check out the latest Goodie Mob LP tomorrow....they even got a 3000 verse which is pretty rare these days.

Favorite New Joint: Berhana Feat. Meraba - Golden Pt.2 (an R&B song that's far too short)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I68UDgWkiAA

2 Chainz album is alright, tho it's kinda dumbed down compared to the last one....which means it will be better received I bet.

Is there a reason that corporations keep running to Run The Jewels for their soundtracks (they have a new song for Cyberpunk 2077)?

I don't even mean that in a negative way....I'm genuinely curious.

....plus new Nicolay & Von Pea *CRACK* equals a really nice week IMO.

I listened to Goodie Mob. Really liked the track "Me Tyme"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOh0A4rvqLI&ab_channel=GoodieMob-Topic

It has that soulful Organized Noize sound that I love. "Back2Back" also has that same sound that I think suits Dungeon Family the best and was perfected on ATLiens

I was surprised to not see more press for this. It was pretty good, not stellar but I'll probably go back to it and throw a few cuts on a playlist. One or two tracks bordered on some cringe but they seemed easy enough to ignore.

It's hard to explain but it makes perfect sense to me for some reason, lol. That's a pretty good catch on their part, too, and probably the best fit as far as a video game goes (cyberpunk 2077 seems right in their zone thematically).

The Nicolay was great! Just too short, lol, but will definitely get some listens for a while.

Am I nuts or is this record amazingly solid? 60 minute runtime, I'm just ending my first listen, and I don't know that I'd cut anything. One or two songs ramble a bit too long, second half might droop a bit compared to the first, but there's such a diversity in sound, great features, and really high musical value throughout. Nothing feels throwaway either; hard to say what will standout after a few listens but I can see this getting steady play for a while.

I'm super impressed.

This was a great week for singles. Already noted Valerie June (amazing!) but also:

Kokoroko - Baba Ayoola (afrobeat-ish outfit from the UK -- hopefully this means a full album is in the works?) https://kokoroko.bandcamp.com/album/baba-ayoola

Nick Hakim - Qadir (extended) - an extended (12 minutes!) version of the best track off of his "Will this make me good" lp earlier this year. It's a slow burn sort of track that just gets richer and richer as it goes on and on -- beautiful enough that you can *almost* forget the fact that its about a friend lost to suicide (I think)... https://youtu.be/N8KFQ3oyvGc
