3028385, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings - Lost Songs vol 3

This is the last volume of a three-part set totaling 48 previously unreleased songs (!) written between her debut and the Soul Journey lp.

I know that there aren't as many Gillian or singer-songwriter fans around here these days but for some perspective, prior to this year Gillian and Dave had only released one studio lp since 2003 (Harrow and the Harvest, 2011).

This year they dropped an album of covers (All the Good Times are Past and Gone) and this 48 song set with virtually no notice. Even when the first volume of this set dropped, it was unclear how big the final set would be. That's virtually the *total* amount of material we got out of them before they sort of went dark in 2003, lol. So for fans, this year has been an amazing treat (maybe the only blessing amidst this dumpster fire).

And it's all really good, the only downside being that it isn't very shaped in terms of sequencing -- it's very much, here's 60 songs, enjoy. But there's something fitting about that and I've already found so many favorites and look forward to finding more as I feast on this for a long time to come.

This NYTimes article (super long, really good) talks a bit about their abundant output this year and how it has come about:

Even if you're not an americana/folk person, if you haven't heard them before you should at least listen to her voice. (But if you're coming to her for the first time, start with the first record, Revival)
