"What are the best white artist covers of black artist tracks"

We all know the story of the white artists absconding with soulful black music, white washing it and making it palatable for white audiences (and getting rich in the process).

But are there any istances where you have to admit that the white artist improved on the work of the black artist?

For example, I offer The Beatles cover of Twist and Shout:

The Isley Brothers Version

its gotten a semi hood pass, however ain't nobody ever gushed over it.

the reaction ain't ever been nearly the same.

no white act has ever made a cover that equals the power and soul that Whitney houston used on covering dolly parton's " i'll always love you"

and black folks covering the beatles took them joints to church. ray charles, aretha franklin and earth, wind and fire

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

Miami Heat, New York Yankees, buffalo bills

Originally Motown artist Brenda Holloway did it (Berry Gordy was one of the songwriters of that song).

Listening to the Brenda version now, it's pretty good. But the BS&T version is pretty dominant.

The ones that work, work. (Some of the good ones may have been Legion of Mary, but that's close enough to the JGB to count.)

Those are more interesting to me at this point than re-listening to the sub-3-minute Motown version that Marvin did.

James Taylor's version, on the other hand, does not qualify for this post.

Sinead murked that shit. However...the original is by The Family, a group with 2 white leads but Prince wrote, produced, arranged and performed all but the lead vox and the horns. So it may or may not count.

Note: Prince and Rosie G remade it after Sinead but hers > theirs.

fuck you.
