"Where the heck is Raphael Saadiq?"

I think I might have forgotten about him entirely if it weren't for those BET commercials.

I really thought this dude was the most talented thing going for a long while but dude hasn't dropped anything in what feels lie eons.

He did it well with Sons of Soul but his most recent run seemed like he was just chasing trends and not breaking new grounds.

It really is fantastic, and songs in the second half are more Saadiq-esque than the first half would imply.

...but i know the man is grinding.
i will say over and over again that because of his work ethic (and sic basslines) he's probably my biggest modern-day (like at least the last 20 years) inspiration in music right about now, i gotta say.
People really don't know just how many songs & albums for people he's produced.

Raphael Saadiq would have.

Not to diminish Saadiq's career. He has had, and is having (I guess), a good to great career, but I thought Saadiq would be constantly visibly doing projects and have his name talked about constantly as a legend for his time.

I get it, Saadiq is doing all sorts of cool stuff behind the scenes, but I thought he would be talked about in the same way we talk about D'Angelo.

Great artist...but one too many albums that the public barely likes means the public won't view Saadiq like D'Angelo (because the public likes ALL of D'Angelo's albums).

Why wouldn't have Buddy or anyone else who replied in this post in these past days brought it up as "something"

Why hasn't anyone brought up the quality or staying power of "Jimmy Lee"?

"Black messiah" was released before it and there's no doubt THAT album speaks for D'Angelo.

"A seat at the table" rather than "Jimmy Lee" is what has staying power?

Edit: there are several posts about "Black messiah"

There was one post about "Jimmy Lee" and...it didn't generate much of a response at all.

Considering that that's 2019, when the amount of traffic to the Lesson had slowed DRAMATICALLY... that's pretty good. (When was the big outage that caused the first major exodus?)

But more to the point, their careers are incredibly different, and that trajectory was marked from an early date, imo. I don't know why anyone would have thought, past TTT, that Saadiq would be a superstar superstar. His solo lps varied in quality, in particular, almost always very good but i'm not sure he dropped a solo classic full-length.

But as an overall writer and musician and performer, he's top tier status, and I think his work as a collaborator is what really sets him apart. His legacy is much bigger than the output under his solo name or his specific bands.

A Seat at the Table was an event. He practically heralded the thing and wrote the song that the album in everyone's heads (Cranes). And that's not the only collab of that level?

It's foolishness at this point to question his career. What hasn't he done? Certified hits, both singles and records, as both writer for others and performer. Stellar live show.

He doesn't have a Black Messiah, but he doesn't need one.

34. "He said Saadiq's albums don't compare to D'Angelo's album"
In response to Reply # 33

Which is what Buddy said he hoped for Saadiq (to be up there with D'Angelo as far as how we talk about D'Angelo) and what I said won't happen because of Saadiq's albums' quality.

If he said Saadiq doesn't have a classic album and everybody thinks ALL of D'Angelo's albums are classic, how was he not saying what I was saying?

I wasn't saying Saadiq wasn't a great artist, just Saadiq has a track record of albums that don't compare to D'Angelo's, Maxwell's, Badu's - that's several Saadiq couldn't rise up to their level for some reason (as far as albums)

Don't know why Saadiq couldn't, but Saadiq probably didn't get the help he needed and thought that he didn't need for his albums. On him for not assessing what he needed to make a classic album.

In response to Reply # 34

with the implication being he aint as talented as he thought cuz he hadnt heard from him in a minute.

you started talkin about albums, fine (irony not lost on you here 10 yrs later hopefully). saadiq prolly don’t have a classic album but hes certainly on the same level as d because of all the other shit he’s done over the course of 40 years. hard to discount that type of relevance.

"Ask of You" is otherworldly I thought he would have been a bigger solo star. "Instant Vintage" could have been a hands down classic if had someone to help him tweak and rewrite some things.

He put out Jane Handcock's first project several years before she got on Death Row.2

He dropped Jimmy Lee about 4 years ago. It was okay. He finally took some musical risks and made more modern sounding music after the last 2 retro soul albums. It was about his addict brother. It had some cool songs and some forgettable ones.

Last I saw.. he's doing television scores and soundtracks, namely producing the soundtrack to Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur on Disney+.

Did the tour actually happen? It was being promoted pretty heavily for a while.

They were supposed to drop a new album or live album or something I recall too?
