"Are you a completionist of any music artist?"
Sat Sep-08-12 12:31 AM by The DC Sniper

I'm talking about you owning EVERYTHING they've ever produced. All the LPs, EPs, singles, remixes, alternate artwork, foreign editions, etc. I want to do so with a lot of artists but I'm very obsessive so I know that I'll probably end up selling my car if I do. It's very informative, however. For those of you who only buy the main albums in stores or on iTunes, you'd be surprised how much music you haven't heard from a lot of your favorite artists. I tried to be a Bjork completionist but it got to the point where I'd have to file for Chapter 11 just to get all her Japanese releases on eBay. Then there's also the realization that no matter how hard you try, you won't be able to own everything an artist has made because two new things pop up for every one that you buy. It's a very Quixotic or Sisyphean task. I doubt even ?uestlove owns every Prince release.

even when i knew they werent that great

now im not fussed about that

i dont need every primo beat ever made

i dont even need every prince thing out there

every p-funk thing isnt necessary

but then thats also cos i dont have the time/inclination to rummage through every release in search of gems anymore, which maybe just makes me less of a hardcore music head these days, but im fine with only having the best stuff

I don't really bother with bonus tracks, or b-sides/singles, or foreign tracks. Just LPs, EPs and tapes. There are some exceptions, but I'm not a fiend about it for anyone. The closest is probably Lil' Wayne and Gucci Mane, but even then I'm not hunting down albums he has a guest feature on if I have no interest in them. And those two are nowhere near my favorite artists, I just sort of latched onto knowing what they're up to.

It helps that a lot of the other artists he's worked with(Copywrite, Tame One, Cage, etc) were on Eastern Conference or Fondle Em but he's still got some stuff that's pretty hard to find.

"Root For The Villain" http://www.amazon.com/Root-Villain-Bull-Celebration-Failure/dp/0615532276 came out probably 6months ago but I heard it's pretty good with a lot of information on how the rap industry is; plus I heard that it was a limited audio-cassette version of this book, you might want to start tracking that down if you are a die-hard fan of J-Zone.

i don't need every 12" single and remix.
i don't need every guest appearance and side project.

my favorite artists are MJ, prince, marvin gaye, and stevie wonder.

3 of those four artists started at motown. which means
they all have a boat load of filler that's not worth hearing once,
nevermind owning.

the fourth is so prolificly inconsistent that makes
efforts to own his entire discography futile and unrewarding.

that being said, there are artists that i own all of the albums
from their golden eras.

but there's no artist that i own ALL of their material.

I did recently order that bjork disc of remixes from debut, incl. black dog, sabres of paradise, etc. - haven't gotten it yet, but was curious given the 'remixers' involved and I had never heard of it. Two dollars, seemed worth it, but curious on your take, if familiar.
