They've dropped five albums this year that have ranged from "damn good" to "potentially great." Last year they had the combo of the two Has-Lo albums, the Hasaan Mackey and Apollo Brown joint, "Rock Creek Park," "The Earn," and the D.T.M.D. album. The Diamond District album is on the short list of best albums released in last five years. Throw in "The Left," "Brown Study," and the various other Oddisee and Apollo Brown instrumentals albums, and it's a wonder that they've found a way to balance quality and quantity. This may be a run that, for me, rivals Def Jux from '01 to '05. That's pretty incredible.
- I did something I hadn't done in a long time on Monday: threw on some jazz, set on my couch, and just listened. The fact that I was doing it while drinking mimosas while sitting next to my fiance and my dog made it even better.
- Man, this coulda been the year of Hiero too, but they're sort of under-performing. I like the Opio album quite a bit, and Phesto's solo joint is cool, but Pep Love's and Casual's are not really moving me. -----------------
