(and congrats?)

*DJ Premier Censoring Noises*

- man. brief rant on vinyl rippers. granted, this is #EntitledAssBullshit, but really -- I am blown by how many folks rip from vinyl and don't listen to what the fuck they ripped. skips/glitches all over the shit. extra BS left behind. encoding in 128kbps (this is 2012, there is NO NEED for that; even the stream sites don't do that).

everything I've ever ripped, I sit down, remove pops where I can, and make sure there is NO skips.

- my new thing is stock/production music. I just got another goodie sent to homebase. It'll be up on the blog soon. Hopefully before the road trip.

- AB, you fucked up bringing our gripes to GD homie. Jabronis swear they hate snobs but get they nose all in the sky when the subject is brought up.

- I've always felt like I've been in a "bubble", but the Internet really makes it possible for EVERYONE to be there. I wonder if people gonna be getting all "OHHHHHH SHIT!!" in a club to some dubstep in 2022.

- the past 5 years have been GOD on the reissue front. if they get Switch's 4th album someway, somehow... I'll be a happy man. I'm glad Funkytowngrooves kept "In The Heat of the Night" on their Ray Parker Jr. reissue. I didn't wanna cop that CD w/o that song. That was the best one on Woman Out Of Control, IMO.

- these has been some of the best times of hip-hop music in years. I don't even listen like that anymore. but... I've heard a lot less weak stuff, less conciliatory crap than I did a decade ago, from the artists that really matter. THAT is all I have ever asked for. R.A.P. Music made me smile wide. I could listen to "Don't Die" and the opening track over and over. The only thing that makes it suck, is that thanks to Clear Channel and Friends bugging up terrestrial radio, and TV not really giving a fuck about music anymore... everything is left to the Internet. And that's about as attention deficient as it gets.

and old Jeezy (circa "Trap or Die"). It's basically the "mainstream" rap beat of today for the most part.

replace the "soul samples" with 1000 hi-hats a minute. It started with ATL street rappers mostly.

Yyyyep. Snare rolling while pitching it high to low is a dead giveaway. Kick drum usually accompanied by an 808-imitation bass. Etc, you get the idea.

And at times, it's comically terrible. Or unintentionally hilarious.

I threw in Bobby Digital on the ride to work today and my oh my lol. Dude sounds ridiculous on this 87% of the time....and not in a good way.

It's still Wu-Tang forever with me and RZA does have some dope verses over the years, but him as an MC, in general, I find unappealing right now May 30, 2012.

That's a good one.

It's primarily the Bob Digi and after-era. It's like he decided to amplify his speech impediment and speak as sloppy as possible, drenching the mic in alcohol-induced sweat and b.o.

yeah. RZA was my favorite rapper in the Wu, he wasn't at the beginning.. but from '95-97 he definitely was. many parts of Bob Digi kind of made me squint, like "what is this dude on"? There were tracks I liked but after all this time waiting for that RZA solo, I wanted to hear a TICAL-like album, with him rapping like he did on Gambinos.

Yeah, stuff like "Domestic Violence" is completely ridiculous, but then you've got his verse of "Airwaves," and stuff like "Lab Drunk" ("MCing to me is easier than breathing"), "Fuck What You Think," "Daily Routine," just to name a few, and I'm good. Plus, he's got some fire verses on Bob Digi 2 as well.

I don't know if it's just a today thing lol, but it seems doper than I recall!

The extra-shrill strings remind me of Chrono Trigger and that bassline is smooth. Underrated RZA beat and one of the less digi one's on the album.

Plus, no RZA on it! (j/k.......but not really)

What I suspect a Wu fan in the mid-90's was imagining what a RZA solo album would sound like (lyrically and beat-wise).

I'm a LITTLE more open to the production on it now that a decade-plus has went by since it dropped, but RZA as Bob Digital on the mic is a rough listen.

...agreed, though I understand what happened in his career (the Hollywood ish, and just not being focussed on Hip Hip), it's still sad to me....I wonder what his opinion would be of EL-P and his projects from the Can OX solo through the new EL joint...would be interesting...

...just decent to me, I mean it's a great concept, but not executed well...the cadence/flow just doesn't work, he sounds on top of the beat instead of in it,....just kind of forced and un-natural sounding imo, and I'm a fan of most of dukes work....

And why I always hear it on the most random songs. Is it supposed to be the best beat ever or something? I like it, but it's not my favorite Pete joint by any means.

I love his music, but I just cannot comprehend what he's talking about 90% of the time. This goes all the way back to Cuban Linx and is most apparent on Nutmeg and the rest of Supreme Clientele. I like the voice and flow, I just don't follow him... like... ever.

(in a logical way, since it seems like after 2011's initial flourish it doesn't seem to be having a lasting large-scale impact... I assume that's just bc most people weren't in it for the right reasons)

wrt AB's post and related post in GD.

I know turntable.fm and its catsuits seems to be going the way of myspace, if not TLR, but... When I have the time/energy, hanging in the mumu rumu with the gang is what gets me excited about music... it's a great way to be exposed to stuff outside my comfort zone (and expose others to stuff outside their own), but in a relaxed atmosphere, and from guys whose tastes & opinions I trust and respect. And even when the chat veers off into other territory, it's still all about the music and the camaraderie it engenders.

In short, it's doing what the Lesson did for me a decade ago and I still highly recommend it, especially for a few of you guys I'd love to hang with and trade tunes.

And I can't upload anything while I'm at work, so I don't feel like I can contribute. I enjoyed TLR experience while it lasted, and I miss it. I still bum around turntable.fm, believe or not. Perfectly fine way to spend the day, even if the rest of the TLR refugees don't dig it.

we're all still getting the 'connection lost' schpiel a few times a day, and there are little glitches here & there. Still we all felt it was preferable in format & function to outloud.fm (though we haven't visited that in a while). TLR was clearly the best combination of assets, and it's too bad no one's taken note of that in launching a new service.

Not being able to upload isn't a problem... some days there'll only be two of us uploading anything. If you ever get it working...

They've dropped five albums this year that have ranged from "damn good" to "potentially great." Last year they had the combo of the two Has-Lo albums, the Hasaan Mackey and Apollo Brown joint, "Rock Creek Park," "The Earn," and the D.T.M.D. album. The Diamond District album is on the short list of best albums released in last five years. Throw in "The Left," "Brown Study," and the various other Oddisee and Apollo Brown instrumentals albums, and it's a wonder that they've found a way to balance quality and quantity. This may be a run that, for me, rivals Def Jux from '01 to '05. That's pretty incredible.

- I did something I hadn't done in a long time on Monday: threw on some jazz, set on my couch, and just listened. The fact that I was doing it while drinking mimosas while sitting next to my fiance and my dog made it even better.

- Man, this coulda been the year of Hiero too, but they're sort of under-performing. I like the Opio album quite a bit, and Phesto's solo joint is cool, but Pep Love's and Casual's are not really moving me.

Killer Mike and EL-P put out a great record. Easily better than any of the Pledge albums.

Robert Glasper 'Black Radio' is still in rotation for me.

Finally got around to spinning Melanie Fiona's last album 'The MF Life". Its pretty good.

so they did a Stanley Clarke box set... with the REAL version of I WANNA PLAY FOR YOU on it, not that wack-ass "edited CD" version. From Popmarket.com (which has a number of others like this).

since I don't have copies of the two albums predating SCHOOL DAYS on CD myself, I had to go and cop.

dammit, and someone reissued his '78-86 albums on a number of compilation sets. Including I WANNA PLAY FOR YOU in its original form.

This is some bullshit. LOL!
