"How Many Of Yall Grew Up Around Black People?"

this is literally the only community where a loud minority accuse me of being paid to have mainstream views in line with the majority of black adults in america.

meanwhile the same folks have views in line with vex id (sorry for the stray shot fam).

what was your childhood experience like to make you feel like theres an elaborate conspiracy to make me think like yall aunties and uncles?

and how is that conspiratorial mindset any different from idiot trump voters who believe anyone who thinks differently than them is paid by george soros?

i joke about it a lot but it really is kinda wacky fam.

underfunded, suspicious of ANYTHING that is different then the norm (until white people cosign it and then its ok) and the norm in this country has been designed expressly to keep them as ignorant, and underfunded as possible

so being in line with what the "majority" of Black folks think isnt that good

so why do you think people (of all demos) who attain higher levels of education are more likely to vote the same way that the majority of black folks do?

The country was designed this way.
Anti-communist efforts in the country HEAVILY targeted Black folks. And Black leftists, whose ideas were undoubtedly gaining ground, were wiped out by the the FBI and CIA. The "mainstream" views of Black folks were much safer for them to publicly hold, and in this country, safety has been the most important thing for most Black folks. You start talking socialism and they're coming through busting heads.
But you love to leave that part out of your "historical analysis" of our aunties and uncles and the conditions that influenced their behavior.

Look little further than the ghettos and housing projects for socialism in practice although its residents do have it better than the average Cuban, Venezuelan and North Korean.

Because they generally have a low opinion of black voters and the history of black politics.

I grew up in a rural black community that has always been politically active.

In fact, a dude wrote his thesis about how the local black folks in my community overthrew white rule.

https://go.gale.com/ps/i.do?id=GALE%7CA15028469&sid=googleScholar&v=2.1&it=r&linkaccess=abs&issn=01465945&p=AONE&sw=w&userGroupName=nysl_oweb&isGeoAuthType=true

Anyway, the reason I fuzz with Dems isn't out of any black blind loyalty but because the political apparatus that I have always worked with, that has rewarded my family and my community, has been democrats. So many of my family members have run for office as democrats or have had appointments to positions have come through Dems. The Dem party is where the established network of black political people are. If I needed some political help or help with government, its the black dems in government I will call.

These days I keep running into these Black Bernie Bros who are new to politics who complain that the Dems do anything for black people. To me it's a tell that you really aren't that involved in politics because I would almost guarantee that the highest ranking person in your local, state or federal government, that you can get access to, is probably a black democrat. We were not as well represented in Bernie's campaign. We are not as well represented in the Green Party.

But its a general contempt for black people in politics that leads black new comers to go seek out those parties for change.

I too question a lot of people's views, but on the internet at large, not just here. Bernie, the right wing media, and tbh Russian disinformation have really poisoned a lot of people's minds.

and spent virtually all of my post-college life in a plurality (45%) black city.

i really do wonder if lack of exposure or shared experience with members of their own race is the cause of people being so bewildered by members of their own race having common views with members of their own race lol.

using their line of thinking...wouldnt it be much more affordable to pay off the slim minority of black people who apparently think these common views are so outrageous? lol.

The vast majority of our parents and elders grew up in the church, so is the selfishness a pushback against the church? To be frank the black church for all the good it's done has a *lot* of issues, so it's not unexpected for there to be resentment.

Overall I honestly don't know, and all I can do is continue to believe what I believe and support the issues/politicians that are important to me.

the number one thing is, just like it is for white people, that there is a massive conspiracy at play to disenfranchise and disempower you!

the thing is it's not um, secret.

and people are like "I found the secret conspiracy" while standing on the obvious one.

the part where the church especially comes in is because it's all Main Character Syndrome.

of COURSE someone is being paid to come talk to them personally

because they want to believe their opinion matters that much, when really it doesn't.

Your views aren't what people have beef with. Hell I'd guess that most folks in here agree on 70-90% of it. You don't get clowned because of that.

You get clowned because of how you go about it.

Its been a good couple weeks for Democrats, and I'd guess you have easily over 60-70 posts in a handful of threads.

You not only have mainstream views, but you make the same corny jokes that certain twitter accounts use (dark brandon, email lady)

Your point/links/flavor of the week often line up with exactly with the same type of twitter accounts are pushing...like the few weeks there ya'll had a crush on Eric fucking Adams.

Your relentless bashing of M4A and Bernie (which I honestly don't disagree with, but you work into any discussion you can)

Your refusal to give the left/progressive wing any credit for anything.

Often blaming the media if you do happen to stumble in here after a democrat fuckup. It never ends and it is legit like you all get the same memo/marching orders each week.

That is, unless it is a bad few months for Dems then you are nowhere to be found. Nowhere to take your L. Just MIA.

Nah, it isn't your views. There are dudes in here well to the right of you who don't get clowned nearly as much or really at all. Ever wonder why?

You straight up act like you are getting paid. At the end of the day, you are just as much of a stan as your boy Vex. Two sides of the same coin and when you entrench yourself so much into one side you inevitably look like a corny hypocrite.

So would you rather be "wack" for getting paid to be a shill for Democrats, or would you rather be a full-fledged stan who runs in here parroting his echo chamber for free...all while accusing dudes of being Bernie bros, etc?

Just as committed to your agenda/team. Just as unwilling to let go of old shit. Just as unwilling to take an L or unable to admit a fault of your team. Very little nuance. Shit that was bad under Trump isn't bad anymore. Etc. I'll say this about Vex though...at least he never started a whole ass thread to defend his honor lol

Church folk were conservative
Most of the Black men were laid off Steel workers who ended up alcoholics
Most of our Black women were single trying to hold the family down

and I didn’t even give a damn about national politics until I was in my early to mid 20’s.

But anyone yapping about politics nonstop growing up was viewed as insufferable

hell, even now.. nonstop political talk is suspect af.

...government overall. Like *all* the political parties, the politicians, etc.

Maybe it's because Philly has been a Democrat-run city for like 60+ years, so criticizing democrats as a black person wasn't abnormal here. I swear, once Obama ran, black people here became Nu-Black in a hurry. Even old people.

fuck was i thinking.

so, if this is a demographic and ethographic political survey / what set you claim kinda deal, ok...

background: majority Black town / city. northeast. the white ppl i went to school with were the ones that couldn't get out. surrounded by more white towns, cities. (nj is wild segregated).

political affiliation: dem. but i don't love these hoes.

political philosophy: pragmatic progressivism.

- voted for hillary but can't really stand her ass. she was eminently qualified, and easily the better choice. and yes, i itoldyouso anybody who says both parties are the same any chance i can get.

- speaking of clintons, i voted for bill, second time. (first time i wrote in ron daniels or some shit, but i was in MD so it didn't make a difference). i'm in a purple state now, so i gotta bang blue unless someone is actively murdering kids

- don't fuck with bernie at all. every now and then he says some good shit. but he had no chance in the general and couldn't even win the primary. my main beef w/ the lefty left is that they think class trumps everything, which is 180 away from the entirety of US history and pre-history. i agree with a lot of lefty left shit, but anyone out here thinking that economic populism is really gonna get the ear of PWTs and drown out their ingrained racism is living in a different reality.

- biden is... eh. infinitely better than the alternative. it was an old ass whiteman pokemon battle. he was the best play. he getting some shots up now, and good for him. fuck bipartisanship. there is no good faith to be found on the other side. put a nice face on it, if you must. but fuck republicans. that said, realpolitik means we have to work around assholes like manchin and sinema (and as much as you/we hate them, lemme tell you about what joe lieberman was to obama's agenda). kick them in the balls behind closed doors (to the extent possible). and try to get more dems in office to make them irrelevant.

somebody came up to me at an event and asked me to sign a green party petition.

me: sure. for what race?
them: senate
me: the SENATE senate? in NORTH CAROLINA??? lol. thanks, but get the entire fuck outta here.

local elections? shit. mayor? county commissioners? go for yours. i'll sign and might vote. but the senate, as much of a razor's edge we're on and this is a purple state? that's asinine.

i'm fully aware of malcolm's philosopy, vis a vis registering as independent. but those were dramatically different times. i register dem and try to push candidates to the left as much as possible. but sitting out, or voting red on some protest shit is directly empowering people who are actively trying to dehumanize me.

peace & blessings,

x.

I kinda grew up around black folk in politics being in my house discussing things with my father when I was kid. The first black on the Boston school committee (John O'Bryant) was a good friend of the family and was always at our house. Next door neighbor was a dean at Northeastern University and campaign manager for many.

My father was a good friend of JFK Jr while running the health department at Brown U in the 70s.

My grandfather on my mother's side was a good older friend of Malcolm X and helped him with the occasional speaking venue of the basement of our church back in the day when he came to town. I saw a lot and heard a lot of stories.

Odd for many reasons, but namely:

(1) you're positing "Black adults in America" as a monolith that all essentially think one way about government/Dem party politics; and
(2) the notion that healthy skepticism of government (government that has innumerably demonstrated its corruption of power/abuse - particularly towards certain communities) as "conspiratorial" and in-line with views only a crazy uncle would hold.

Even when you look at the 2020 primary polling data, you'll notice a diversity of views across a vast spectrum among Black voters. There are *significant* generational and geographic differences that debunk any notion of a monolith. Black voters under 40 hold decisively more progressive views than older Black voters, typified by the voting breakdown of those who voted for Sanders/Warren (Sanders decisively won the under 40 Black vote) versus the older Black voting community which came out in droves for Biden - and indeed - he wouldn't have won without their support (buoyed by Clyburn in SC). Also, Black voters in the South vote differently than Black voters in Nevada, or California, or Michigan.

The idea that those voters who opted for more progressive candidates (or hold more skeptical views of government) didn't grow up around Black people is a weird take, with no evidence to support it.

There is absolutely a strong tradition of the evangelical left and the Black church in the south fusing with Democratic party politics, and that's one of the reasons Black voters (particularly in the South) tend to vote more conservatively and have become a stalwart for moderate/conservative Democratic politics. There's also a significant elite that has developed within that circle (something Cornel West often refers to as the CBC gravy train) - but that trend is being disrupted among younger generations. The electorate of 2030 will look quite different than the electorate of 2010.

Incidentally, I grew up around a lot of Black people. I moved a lot as a kid, and two of the communities I lived in and went to school in were predominately Black. In some instances, I was the only non-Black in some of my classes. I'm even a member of a historically Black legal fraternity. I've lived in many different countries and have also spent considerable time living in predominately Indigenous/Latino communities.

What I can say - for sure - is that never once in my life did I witness wholly monolithic thinking of any group, maybe except for a certain contingent of conservative whites who demonstrated far more groupthink than many other communities often cited as being purportedly monolithic in philosophy.

Another example of this fundamental misunderstanding is in the view that an influx of immigration from Mexico and Central/South America will ultimately lead to a massive infusion of Democratic voters, but that's not what's actually happening. Republicans are actually getting larger portions of that electorate than most realize.

But yea fam - flex away if you want - but maybe people just actually have honest disagreements with your unconditional cheerleading of Establishment Democrats. Maybe it has nothing to do with where they grew up. Maybe they aren't being "conspiratorial" and are just assessing the institutional rot for what it is.
