First of all, Pence. True believer he can say that he looked Presidential while he was presidential when he was VP.

The usual crew of leftover idiots who've ran before: Cruz, Rubio, Romney, and maybe guys like Paul and Huckabee. Certainly Kasich, who will make his appeal to the middle.

In terms of new deplorables, people like Cotton and Hawley. And Sasse. Possibly Mike Lee.

Any Republican governor from a battleground state that gets re-elected in 2022. Or just re-elected period.

And there will be some women who just got elected, who'll run in hopes of ending up a VP candidate.

It's going to be ridiculously dumb.

We'll have to see if Trump stench is a thing, and if so how much she still has on her.

Pre-existing support base who don't demand policy action because they're fans, not constituents. He's been dabbling* with a rightwing anti-capitalist critique for awhile now, and Hawley et al. are signaling that's the new hustle for the party. He's ideologically malleable but rhetorically straight-forward. And he came up in conventional media so he may get more leeway initially from his gutless former colleagues.

Though that obviously depends on whether the GOP discards Trump as a model. A bigger, wider Dem win would have convinced me they'd maybe play it straight next time with a conventional politician like Cotton or Hawley. Somebody with a shot but who won't scandalize the donor class. Maybe Dan Crenshaw splits the difference? But I doubt their conclusion from 2020 will be that Trump failed, so Carlson seems like the best bet if they go looking for the next Trump. Though I guess "the field" is an equally good guess if I believe this. After all, if we did this in November 2012 I doubt anybody would have named Trump.

*struggling with verb choice there because it's not been consistent. that's partly because there's no such thing as a coherent rightwing anti-capitalism and partly because he's just trying on hats. so... dabbling.

i don't know much about him beyond his some of his background.

I watched him run circles around Maher in defending Trump. Not that Maher is any kind of heavyweight, but Crenshaw did it with such ease and intellectual dishonesty while *appearing* reasonable, it made me think he might have a future.

Plus, you know. Eye patch.

I think he is going to be a problem in 2024.

His style has ability to straddle a fine line with respect to Trump.

He is brash, direct, populist America First, "anti-establishment" politician that is deep in the culture wars. Just like Trump was.

But unlike Trump, he is not a clownish buffoon. He's well spoken and sharp. He's good at controlling the press.

He made a big bet with his Covid response and I think it's going to pay off big time for him.

My prediction: he is going to easily win re-election in 2022. And, assuming Trump doesn't run, he'll lock up the Republican nomination by around the third debate.

I'm already seeing Desantis 2024 flags & signs around town ("Make America Florida" - I kid you not).

He & Rick Scott don't get along and I think Scott has his eyes on the presidency too. I'd love to see those 2 go at each others throats. Rubio will also stick his nose in the mix, but I don't think he has what it takes.
