Thoughts? I have an old ass (7 years) HP 17 inch and have a chance to get that Mac. Never had a mac, always a PC/Windows. And 17' always. Anyone go from a regular size to that portable size? Ive always wanted a Mac and Ive had the iphones for years.

I have the 15" and even though it's nice and slim.....I hesitate to take it on trips unless I absolutely NEED to have it.

If you have great eyesight, the resolution is high enough that you can simply gain "more" screen real estate by running it in the highest resolution.
My eyesight is too shitty to run at the highest resolution on my 15", so I usually run it in the Best For Retina resolution setting....

its still only 13"...I tried it at the store and feels kind of weird to type on a smaller device. And Im not really taking it anywhere but that lightness is amazing, as Im used to these ten pound or more comuters. All I plan on doing is web surfing and maybe getting back into writing. Thing that is killin me is they have a 17" HP with the same stats or better for $600. But I am jonsin' for a mac

count on a $600 computer holding up for 5+ years.
But I switched to Macbook in 2012 and only JUST replaced it last summer. It's still going too...but my wife's Macbook Air from 2011 finally died from water damage so I used that as an opportunity to upgrade myself.

The only downside to Mac you might face is having to buy MS Office
If you're getting back into writing.
Apple does have it's own software for that...but it's trash IMO so I just eat the cost of MS Office myself....

Yeah, Im going to have to purhase MS Ofice for all the docs etc I already have and I dont mind that. Thats good advice on the 600 computer lasting, thanks. Any issues with the size of your 15" regarding comfort typing? Seeing mine will be even smaller. But that screen is gorgeous.

these new butterfly joints are kinda weird with the low travel...
but at the same token, if i'm doing some serious typing, I usually doc the Mac and use a external wireless keyboard, mouse and big monitor....

Id also have to get another LD dapter to use disc drive as they (and most laps ow) dont have them. I still buy discs, dl, and save the discs. And gnna need that large adapter for regular usb's. I guess these type of issues are where the Apple comlaints come from lol.

if you're just writing you can get a regular macbook. Pros are for people that need the power for creating content or what have you.

I made the switch...
(Mind you..I STILL require Windows to run my drafting software of choice which is AutoDesk Revit...but I just run it on Parallels Virtual Machine and it's smooth as can be.....)

*Sturdiness: They simply feel solid and never exhibit the creaks and "flimsiness" of your standard mid-range to low end PC...You pick any MacBook and the build quality is just very reassuring....this comes into play for the next point...

*Portability: It's more than just size....it's the way they're construction with a slim profile that slots easily into most backpacks with ease. And if you don't have a backpack, they're sturdy and compact enough to just grab and go same as you would with a thick folder or portfolio or hardback book....they aren't so light as to feel flimsy, and aren't so heavy as to be cumbersome...even though you WOULD notice the weight of the 16" joint after carrrying it around for 1/2hr or more...

*BATTERY LIFE: I can go DAYS without plugging this thing in and no matter what, whenever I open it up, there's juice as long as I wasn't going all in on a power working session or something...so say on the weekends....this also leads to another bonus....

*INSTANT ON: you open up the lid on MacBook and it's ready to use within seconds...no waiting on a windows splash screen, pending updates that have to be installed, background processes that have to warm up...no staring at a black screen for what feels like hours... Open the top, Apple Logo flashes for a split second and then you're either typing your password, swiping your fingerprint or just going to work if you're feeling froggy and don't bother with security at all.... This to me is money. Open laptop, and get to work..no BS.

*Solid State drives: I think all Macbooks have SSD now....so off jump the OS is just gonna fly for you compared to Windows on a regular spinning hard drive...

*Updates: MacOS updates are free and infrequent enough that it's not a big hassle, but frequent enough so that your investment feels worthwhile. The regular security updates generally happen in the background and are unobtrusive compared to Windows. I feel like I waste SOOOOO much time with security updates and patches on my Windows PC at work (Surface Pro) that it completely kills the positives of this machine. The BIGGEST beef is when it's time to go home and I go to shut down or log off and I gotta wait for an update to install BEFORE it will shut down...infuriating...

*Support: I mentioned my old 15" MBP from 2012...well...around 2017 I decided to cheap out and replace the battery myself...I botched the shit out of it...I mean it worked...but I didn't do a quality job putting the new battery in so you could feel it shifting and creaking a little inside there whenever you picked it up...When I handed it down to my wife, I took it to Apple store for a checkup and OEM battery replacement. They did it and it only cost me like $180 or so I believe....kicking myself because it was cheaper than I thought it'd be and they ended up replacing the batter and the entire bottom chassis in that price! Felt like a brand new laptop! I feel like any other PC manufacturer woulda told me to kick rocks...

The OS and your Apps are going to take AT LEAST 40GB.

I install Windows on the machine too - that takes another 20GB.

Install a few games.

Add some movies, a small music library and you're spending time worrying how to manage your space and not enough time using the computer.

It's like built in anxiety for me.

And frankly Windows 10 is good enough for me now. (My younger self would have RAGED against this statement, but it's true.)

Apple should be ASHAMED they released a $1299 computer with only 128GB of ram. Phones have more ram by default 9sometimes.)

and that bumps the price up to $2500, which makes me pause. i have to check to

with the touchbar. I like it.

- Touchbar turned out to be suprisingly more useful than I thought -- I use it mainly to quickly play/pause music apps, change volume, change brightness -- things you could use function keys for on most laptops. But it's also context specific so e.g. if calculator app is open you get the calculator operator keys on the bar. Little stuff like that turns out to be nice.

- Mac display in general are usually great (this one included).

- Battery life is good

- USB-C ports aren't that big a deal. You can buy usb-a to usb-c adapters pretty cheap for older peripherals. I also have a really nice all-in-1 usb-c adapter that gives you power, HDMI and USB-A, so I can hook up power, monitor and keyboard + mouse on 1 adapter.

- The main irritant and thing that drives me nuts is the keyboard. Mine is several years old when the touchbars first came out and I think there have been a number of lawsuits about that keyboard -- it's very loud and hard to press the keys. I type pretty fast and the keyboard actually does slow me down sometimes. Not enough to make me hate the computer but it is annoying enought that I notice it fairly regularly. If the keyboard was slightly less annoying I'd love (vs. like) the laptop. I am not sure if they made the keyboard better on more recent models.

peace

HHGreg had it for $1980 last week.

Wait for it to go on sale again then have BB price match it.

I use this site for deals: https://slickdeals.net/
