count on a $600 computer holding up for 5+ years.
But I switched to Macbook in 2012 and only JUST replaced it last summer. It's still going too...but my wife's Macbook Air from 2011 finally died from water damage so I used that as an opportunity to upgrade myself.

The only downside to Mac you might face is having to buy MS Office
If you're getting back into writing.
Apple does have it's own software for that...but it's trash IMO so I just eat the cost of MS Office myself....
