that had so much potential and would have made Prometheus more meaningful. People are loving this though, so I guess I'm happy that it's at least a really good movie.

Story was kinda wack.

Action was good.

I think these movies are doing a terrible job of explaining the yackub theory.

Made humans.

Humans are out of order

Engineers design black substance to wipe out humans.

Simple.

I also dont like the roman albino beings being represented as engineers along with the Elephant mask which are distinctly represented in Hindu and Ancient African cultures.

Where did all the Engineers go?

Surely they all didn't die when the AI killed them with their own weapon?

How did the AI return with their ship to kill them with their own weapon?

The question that was asked in Prometheus....'why do the engineers want to kill humanity' is answered. Kinda spoilers here:

Engineers create humanity. Humans build AI to find their creators. Ironically, human built AI is what threatens to kill our creators. So our creators create a pathogen to destroy us in order to protect themselves from our AI. But our AI gets ahold of their pathogen and uses it against them...and then develops it to be even more effective (the creation of the Alien) in order to kill off humanity. It's kinda poetic that the AI we made to find our creators ends up killing them. And it's a cycle because the AI we make, in turn, make the Alien which is destined to kill us. The engineers are to us as we are to AI as AI is to the Alien.

I 'think' I'm getting that right. In anycase....I thought it was great.

I'm pretty sure the engineers are trying to kill humanity because they realize our AI is destined to kill them. In the same way we should kill David so he doesn't create the Alien. Of note: Humans stopped making AI like David and this 'doesn't surprise him'. So David needs to stop humanity )his creator) in the same way we need to stop the engineers (our creators).

Maybe David's intent is more a result of self determination whereas the alien AI is simply following orders?

Between these films and blade runner I wonder if the theme of AI is really the central focus of both films?

everyone is out to preserve their life form in some way...

but then again, is David working for a corporation or did he go rogue? I haven't seen this one yet but it's my understanding all these AI's are working for the company who wants this Alien as a weapon.

I also have to remind myself this is BEFORE Alien and Aliens.

also there's something about his time alone on the journey in Prometheus as well as his fascination with at least one of the characters dreams in that movie which seem to suggest he's motivated by isolation, curiosity, and a general disdain for humanity as a result to being superior to humans but made subserviant.

Maybe Scott is trying to address the albino and African aspects of the creation story?

If they were hybridized or not doesn't escape the Roman looking pale beings being represented as the mothers and fathers of humanity.

While the black substance(carbon or melanin) which spawned humanity is seen as a biological weapon.

People will say I'm reading too deep but I'm just explaining the symbolism as I see it.

I hear you on the "black is bad" motif, but in reading Scotts commentary on Noah I get a feeling he's well versed with the older versions of the stories and at the same time has to make movies that will sell to white people. I guess my hope is that he tries to sneak in "authenticity" when possible -- at least when it comes to bible related material

If you just think the concept is cool I can understand why some people wouldn't. Some folks just wanted a repeat of Alien and Aliens, some wanted another Prometheus. If you didn't mind a combination of the two then the movie wasn't that bad.

Honestly its the third best movie with Alien in the title. No way you would put Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection ahead of this. As far as ranking for me it would go.

Alien (Aliens)
Aliens (Alien)
*seriously those two switch up so much for me*
Alien: Covenant
Alien 3
Prometheus
Alien Resurrection
AvP: Requiem
AvP: Steaming pile of shit (the first one)

I really wish they would have gone with the Steve Parry novels from back in the day as a follow up to Aliens. Those were pretty damn good and followed up 10 years after. Hicks, a grown up Newt, and an Ellen Riply who has seen some shit! After Alien 3 was released they had to change the names of Hicks and Newt in the books to Wilks and Billie.

My personal timeline goes like this
Alien
Alien: Isolation (video game)
Aliens
Alien Book 1: Earth Hive
Alien Book 2: Nightmare Asylum
Alien Book 2: Female War

If you're a big fan give those a shot and if you're not a gamer then you can follow the cut scenes on youtube. It follows Riplys daughter who is mentioned in the film, she tries to find her mother and shit hits the fan, there is one Alien like in the first movie and its her trying to survive.

TL;DR: Covenant was good.

I liked Prometheus but man -- so many head scratching actions by the characters in that movie

Let's just take our helmets off 3 hours into being on this new planet

Let's just touch this alien life form and see what happens

Let's not foray a short distance out then repot back and plan our next steps

Her husband was a dick too. David never really liked either of them. I think prometheus implied that blade runner takes place in the same universe so if they don't make synthetics like David anymore it would likely be due to what they are concerned about in blade runner; synthetics like David who can form responses based on emotions -- like don't like etc

I don't think the characters are aware that David is actually AI. They think he's just a robot like the one they have. Incapable of wanting something for themselves or doing anything that they're not programmed to do.

At the end of Prometheus when David told Shaw 'there are other ships', I was talking to the screen again. Like 'bxtch he has hidden everything from you and Weyland Jr. (Vickers) the WHOLE MOVIE and given you both the finger. Why would you trust him? Go back to Earth and be famous.'

First movie should have been it.

2nd movie was excusable because although the tone was much different it was good enough to stand on it's own.

Everything else is garbage - 100% trash.

See also Terminator movies and Predator movies. (Predator 2 being the only good one.)

Predator 2 has the predator hunting gang members, and a showdown where Danny Glover kills one with a Frisbee shaped like Krull.

there's a couple of deleted segments that put the claustrophobia/fear factor on par with alien, namely the sentry gun/corridor stuff.

dawg, there was still a derelict ship with "thousands of eggs" left behind from when the nostromo bounced with john hurt all facehugged. ash told the company about the organism, so it makes sense that the company (weyland-yutani... carter burke) would surreptitiously send people there as "terraformers" years later to unknowingly investigate the ship...

peep the aliens special edition ---

ripley finds out her daughter had died while she was in hypersleep for those 50+ years. this arc lends so much to ripley's catharsis/redemption as a mother figure with newt. then she fights another "mother" protecting her own. film was ahead of its time in terms of feminism.

c'mon @ completely unnecessary.

I'm kinda surprised there isn't a clear consensus on that. I LOVE Aliens 3. David Fincher's first movie. Nuff said.

Way better than Star Wars. Alien might be the best set design of all time. Perhaps 2001 might have a word. But like 2001...I could watch Alien on mute and just look at it and be entertained.

I was watching the 1978 version of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' recently and it occurred to me....The first 90 seconds of that movie is better special effects and more beautiful to look at than every comic book movie ever made combined. I have to go see comic book movies to spend time with my family. It's worth it...but comic book movies are a modern cultural plague of our time lol. They have essentially destroyed filmmaking and I'm bitter as hell.

i cannot believe the studio fox cut the scenes where they *spoiler* actually caught and trapped the alien for a bit, before the one prisoner started basically devil-worshipping it and ultimately let it loose again. added so much more to the story.

i ain't mad at fincher. he took over for a fired director, admist an already-underway production on its 20 millionth script re-write that wasn't even finished. hicks and newt were supposed to have survived, with hicks becoming the main character over ripley. i think sigourney weaver politicking didn't help either. and wtf was fincher gonna do and say to anyone as a rookie film director?
