This is like asking why a jazz saxophone player from the fifties and sixties resented new wavers. They spent 20 to 30 years honing a craft that was once their claim to hipster greatness that noone cares about or values anymore.

How many hours does one need to invest to rap like Joe Budden? How many hours does one need to invest to rap like Yachty? I'd be disillusioned and bitter too. Fact is...the effort he assumed would reward him with critical respect ended up backfiring and making him look like an overwrought nerd. Not to me and I'm not insulting him. I respect Budden. Kids don't.

In Miles Davis book he talks about a festival he played and meeting The Steve Miller band. Same shit.

I think that they need to talk more because they both have very valid stances. I lean more towards the young folks' push for eliminating the whole competition aspect of hip hop. There's enough money and fans to go around that the whole "Who's the best?" question IS kinda silly in 2017.

"who's the best?" doesn't matter in 2017. everyone can get money. joe seemed to not understand why millennial rappers feel that way. i think it's a function of how music was distributed then and is distributed now. back in joe's day you had to prove yourself in order to get on. you had to be the best rapper in your immediate vicinity or musical "lane" in order to get your music recorded and heard because the ability to disseminate music was in the hands of a select few. now all you have to do is steal pro tools and upload recordings to soundcloud. not having to compete to get your music heard does a lot to reduce the competitive aspect of making music

Nigga is mad because yachty a 19 yr old is happy
Reminds me of some of the posts I see on
Here. But I love y'all still. Joe brings up
Valid points on the show tho I like hearing his perspective
So it doesn't bother me too much

I don't care for yachty either
Not disdain but he isn't my lane.

platform that Complex has given him and Akademics. Look, Joe will say himself that he's a huge fan of self-deprecation. Joe IS all things "Old Man Get Off My Lawn", but he also has fair points about the youth, who are perceived carriers of the torch. I think he makes valid points, and I appreciate them for the most part. I think he's hella articulate, and yes he does come from a wounded place, which probably translates as such. However, what he said about artists needing to hear the stance of someone who has been in their space, is crucial. This is a dog-eat-dog industry, and everyone likes to play, "I gotta secret." He isn't a crusader, but.....I get it!!

Joe is playing a character... and the "Old Man Yelling At The Clouds" character is currently profitable for him...

Note: ES is hosted by Joe.. Co-hosted by Akademiks....

ES is dope its an ESPN style show for music.

IMO he explained the hate/issue pretty succinctly... Boat's 1st interview with Ebro painted him as a certain type of person that he wasn't. He immediately made himself an adversary to the culture that was making him successful.

In a sea of change within the genre he became the poster boy for hate from anyone who opposed it..

To add for people who watched it. It is HIGHLY likely he is in a 360 Deal... When you are signed to a label that ALSO manages you it means they get a % of everything regardless..

a la a 360 deal... doesn't matter what Capital gets tbh QC is making bread

Facts..

He needs to also be mindful of the fact that every kid under the age of 25 is a brand. They have only existed in a world where cultivating an online visual identity was part of adolescence. They are inherently more marketing savvy than previous generations and it can't always be assumed that they arent in control of that identity.

and often its because of his own, often incorrect, interpretation.

Yatchy said "I'm happy everyday"
Which Joe interpreted as "Happiness is the only emotion I experience"
And then he kept coming back to that, over and over again.

One can be happy everyday and still experience other emotions on those same days, Joe.

Sidenote: Akademiks doesn't really know a fucking thing. He shouldn't have this platform. I don't always agree with Budden, but he at least has some basis for most of the things he says. Akademics is a moron.

He wants to put the lil boat up on game so that he does not make the same mistakes that Joe did during his youth.

Yachty is having the time of his life but for fuck's sake focus on your business. It is in his best long-term interests to be aware of the nature of his record deal and aware of everything that relates to future longevity in this game. Like it or not but lil boat is a representative of the younger generation of hip-hop. He's technically Generation Y but speaking to Generation Z as well. Like it or not but he's the future so Joe's concerns are very valid.
