"cwta lost/wasted talent: Lauryn"

cwta (can we talk about)

On xm they were talking that Lauryn Hill was recently late for a show (again). Three hours late.

We all know has issues going on and decades later they still exist

the unplugged release was actually a brilliant move, her Around The World In A Day, if you will. Even Kanye had his first hit off of sampling a song from it.

But thinking all what could have been. That voice. That skill.

But now its only missed dates, late arrivals, touring on the same album decades after (talk about great mileage) isn't a good look.

Its a musical tragedy.

Folks been holding on, but you could see what time it was when she came out with that bad unplugged album, and that there would probably be no coming back from that artistically. The lyrics in all of her songs had spiraled down into self-pity by that point, it seems.

i'm no longer willing to give Lauryn benefit of doubt.

i don't think she's got anything else in her.

i think if she had more to give that was in the vein of Miseducation or could approach that quality she'd have done so by now.

she's been performing the same 10 songs for almost TWENTY YEARS.

go on and marinate on that for a minute (c) Big Boi.

That's the thing, back then, she seemed to have more in her to give and create. I know some may have given all they had, may have mental issues, may not have the same aid they had in creating what got them to that mtn top, but it seems wasted to not have continued for at least a lil bit albeit the unplugged album (which I think was a bold and okay move. I mean how do you follow Miseducation).

i think she gave us all she had to give and that's it.

b/c if she had more she could've been performing THOSE songs over the last 17 yrs or so.

D'Angelo was out on the road performing Black Messiah songs as early as 2010.

Prince was out on the road performing new-as-yet-unreleased songs throughout his career.

i just used them as examples b/c they're the first that came to mind - if she had new amazing songs in her then she could've given them to us on stage by now. she hasn't. instead she performs the same set over and over and over.

i think her tank is empty.

and after Unplugged...she hasn't performed new songs over these last 17 years. she just keeps revisiting/reworking Miseducation and her verses from The Score.

if she had other stuff to give us she could've done so.

Maybe she feels corny for playing the same 12 songs for 20 years and has to drag herself on stage each night. That's the only explanation that makes sense, to me.

If she would have humbled herself enough to work with other people (again, and openly, rather than fronting, like with the NewArk dudes) she could easily have had a fuller career.

on one hand, you never know what's going on in her head.

on the OTHER hand, if she's got a lot of personal shit goin' on, she needs to stop accepting bookings. It never ends well, and it makes more and more people dislike her.

personally, I was never a huge fan. She made some great music, but not enough for me to want to go out of my way see her ( although I have, courtesy of a free ticket). So when she cancels, it really doesn't affect me one way or the other.

I'll close with this: anybody who still buys a ticket to see her is basically throwing money away.

I don't know...she foretold where she was headed in her unplugged album. It was honest, confessional...her testimony to the world. With this in mind, I don't understand why folks want her to go back to being her fake self. Hell, she even talked about being stuck between something she loved (music) and hated it too..

Adam lives in theory tho....

Her big album was pretty much a manufactured, session player/team effort. But that's the thing about artists who are defined by their voice. Their music is only gonna be as good as the team behind her.

I saw her during the Roots/Fugees tour way back when....and it was CRAZY how clear her impending stardom was. Noone could take their eyes off her. I was pissed because I bought the ticket RIGHT before 'Killing em softly' came out so the Roots were supposed to be headlining....but it got switched. In anycase...as soon as she hit the stage it was just pure star-power at work.

The only way her career can be saved is if she agrees to hitch onto a shit hot producer and does EXACTLY what they tell her to. But she won't. Someone made a post about how the word 'artist' is used and I think it applies to Lauryn. She's not an artist...she's a vocalist. Her producer needs to be the artist and she needs to be the singer and it could work.

If she was a vocalist she would do wtf producers and bean counters told her and drop albums...

But since she is an artiste... 3 hours late, no albums, crazy rants on why babylon cant control her, etc...

If they onoy released one album and did the same shit as Hill we would all give them the same treatment.
