simply by virtue of not being stuck under a 2" layer of dust.

anyway i simply find cole mediocre and boring. thats the worst thing you can be to me as an entertainer. C- bars. C- beats on a good day. creatively stagnant. i don't fuck w/ him musically. as a person more power to him tho.

not that i wouldn't enjoy it. if i do hear something i like then i like it. i just don't have the time or luxury to listen and download etc nearly as much as i used to, so i'll give you that.

i rarely hate on new music because i haven't listened to it to even really have an opinion.

i still don't get the Cole hate, but do ya thing playboy.

Maybe because early on coles steez waaaay
To much like his the whole left home
To make beats for Hov Shit it felt like college dropout
Or maybe because coles first single was
Based off a song on college dropout
that album inspired a bunch of niggas

I like this song

Cole is cool with me. Sometimes he gets
Stagnant but he's not over the top with all of the
Silly ass voice inflections and all of the
Extracurriculars.

I just don't think it's a diss per se. he's expressing how he feels, which is how a lot of people feel. the whole "I miss the old Ye" is a common thought that we've all said. it's not like he's saying something groundbreaking. it's just that he put it in a song.

And I reached that conclusion independently. I assume many others did too, then it became internet fodder because people wanted to express the widely-held opinion that his music is boring.

The dude can rap his ASS off. Mega talented. But his music is sleepy as fuck and always has been.

Theres tons of artists selling more than people in the past, doing more shows, making more money, etc but in the bigger picture of industry impact they don't mean shit. Look at Logic. Dude has a solid solid following. Sells out shows. Sometimes does back to back shows in cities when he sells out. The impact on the music industry he has is minor.

Canibus and Cole comparsion based on stricly skills Cole is just the better artist. Canibus' got in his own way trying to be too complex and lyrical. Didn't really learn how to write songs just bars. So yea give that to Cole because he was more of an artist.

It has nothing to do with era's.

Some rappers are dope as shit live and grind it out with tours. Others sell records but have shitty live shows.

but to be able to have bars, craft songs, produce and go play without a guest artsist? Man... that's rare as hell.

Wonder if the production on the rest of the album will be in this vein. I think it's cool that J Cole is at a place where he can release music without much advance notice, or concern with radio/club play. Regardless of how folks may feel about his product, that's a pretty noteworthy position to be in for a major label rap artist.

This is why I wish I liked his music more. He's releasing music he wants to release on his terms, with no features. He writes and produces all his own shit. He can rap his ass off. But goddamn is he boring, and I can't get past it no matter how hard I try. I do not get excited *at all* at any of his tracks.

In response to Reply # 0

It actually can be about any artist who had an amazing 3 or 4 album run then cooled/fell off. It happens to many artists in all genres of music.

With that said, Ye is the only current 'genius' in the collective minds that has been doing questionable shit and putting out questionable music....so yeah, verse 1 is definitely about Ye.

Cole doing what he do best, spittin' real shit.

In response to Reply # 0

both kanye (verse 1) and wale (verse 2) have publicly admitted they have mental illness problems, multiple times in interviews and through their music. cole's "can't you guys see how great and famous you are? get it together!" take misses the point and comes off as callous. anxiety and depression don't care about how many fans you have or how many racks you can blow. they're with you for life and affect you no matter what frame of mind you're in

and of course the 3rd verse is about cole being better than them because he somehow rose above it all even though he's not afflicted with the same things as his targets in the previous verses. i can't stand this guy

I'm a Ye fan but nah... you don't get to treat people like shit and then hide behind mental illness.

I remember a dude on here telling us how he was so happy to open for Wale and when he went on Wale's tour bus Wale treated him like shit. Treated him so bad he said he gave up on music or lost hope in music.

These niggas aren't too far gone to treat people with decency.

Isn't know how Cole been treated by these dudes. Maybe Cole had mental illness as well so it's all fair game. I hate how some rappers get to be assholes and hide behind some label while treating everyone like shit.

i do agree that people shouldn't be terrible and then hide behind mental illness but i never got that vibe from ye or wale. imo wale always came across as not fully understanding his depression (even though he talks about it a lot), e.g. he doesn't realize that he's unhappy because he has depression, not because he's not as famous as he thinks he should be. but i don't know him so i can't say definitively what his mindset is. and ye always appeared to be barely holding it together, under stress that can't be comprehended by anyone but him. he's world famous, hugely influential, constantly attacked by fans, critics, and pundits, and still has to deal with anxiety and depression (which has to be exponentially worse when constantly in the spotlight)

maybe i'm being a little too empathetic towards their mental illnesses. all of the above doesn't excuse being an asshole but i think there's some middle ground to be reached there and they both definitely deserve some sympathy. and j cole is an opportunistic jerk for attacking them publicly

A large majority of his contemporaries rap in ways that are extremely "tone deaf and insensitive" to poverty/low income, misogyny, the impact of drug usage and gun violence on families and communities, etc. Do you hold those rappers in contempt as strongly as you are Cole over this song? Do you judge him differently because you feel he's condescending or preachy in a way that those other rappers aren't? Your critique feels somewhat pitchfork-y, and I type that as someone who isn't a J Cole fan, and owns none of his music.

because it's shallow while claiming to be deep. i respect him greatly from a business perspective because he reached a point where he can basically do whatever he wants and still be wildly successful without being beholden to his label. his fans seem to love him and he seems to really appreciate that. that's awesome

>A large majority of his contemporaries rap in ways that are

i don't. but they don't claim to be positive (or at least not negative) and don't have songs comparing themselves to nas. you can be a jerk in one song while having really uplifting and incisive things to say in another song. i think cole is off base with this song

>Do you judge him differently because you feel he's condescending or
>preachy in a way that those other rappers aren't?

this is it exactly. maybe i'm expecting more of him since he projects this "everyman with everyman problems" image. but i'm not super familiar with his music beyond friday night lights and his singles. this could be a case of a small sample size skewing my perspective. my responses in this post are a reaction to what cole is presenting in this song. i don't like what he's presenting in this song

i'm also very sensitive to mental illness issues (maybe overly sensitive) so when i hear someone attacking someone else with mental illness i get a little defensive for the person being attacked and that sometimes manifests itself as aggression towards the attacker. the reality of this whole situation is that there is a grey area between "targets of cole's verses deserve it" and "the targets of cole's verses are being unfairly attacked" and i'm leaning towards the latter when the real truth of what's happening is more towards the middle

As a college promoter it always seemed like the roughest infant rappers were the most down to earth and the pro black positive rappers were assholes. (Talib and his pink ass manager Corey)

These fools ain't mentally ill... they just entitled assholes who always got money and fame and are more of what they already were.

Only reason these fools depressed is because they think they should be more famous.

That's not tone deaf, that's personal

The ultimate message of the song is

Word. It's a kind of realness and
vulnerability that some people don't really
wanna hear in a rap song despite feeling
the same way.
Bblock said it best in The Lesson once
when he said he wants rap to talk about
a life he doesn't live. It was a veiled
big-up to Rick Ross' kingpin BS, but it
spoke for alotta people. It doesn't speak
for me, but alotta people want fantasy
even if the rapper is pretending it's not
fantasy.

Solo is years old now, as stated in interviews.
So it's not about Drake.
Every mention of ghostwriters is not about Drake.

Look at the proceeding bars even

"So he grows out of control
Into the person that he truly was all along, it's startin' to show
Damn, wonder what happened
Maybe it's my fault for idolizing niggas
Based off the words they be rappin'
But come to find out, these niggas don't even write they shit
Hear some new style bubblin' up, then they bite the shit
Damn, that's what I get for lyin' to myself"

Is Drake accused of "changing"? Not from what I hear... the opposite actually in his music. One of the biggest criticisms of Views is that his content hasn't changed on bit and he's recycling the same shit. You think Cole (31 years old) "idolized" Drake (30 years old)? Highly doubtful. Kanye is widely known to run the same kinda writing camps as Drake (and others -- Beyonce). Folks who are into Death Grips (iirc) called out Kanye for biting that Yeezus' style from those kinds of groups. Took Keef's "Don't Like," used Chance's gospel feel for TLOP. Made Panda into Father Stretch My Hands.
And Drake brought out Cole and vice-versa on each of their last tour runs (this year)... That shit ain't about the Canadian.

it's not even close, and J Cole is really cool. but he's not even remotely in Kendrick's league. J Cole is essentially the MVP of the D League, and Kendrick is the MVP of the NBA.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
