life is meaningless, purposeless and random. Certain things happen because of hive mentality but I don't think there are a few hands putting things in motion. In fact, I think we all have a hand in putting whatever big trends we see happening.
For example, the militarization of the police, we play a part in that asking for a stronger police presence to combat crime in the 80s and 90s, fears after 9/11 and our hero worship of cops.

Stop and frisk hundreds of thousands of people a year without provocation. Hundreds of extra judicial killings, anytime, any place with no consequences. The police are heavily militarized for this very purpose. You could argue that the courts have stopped working for us in various ways... They can't prosecute police of murders. They force the poor, black and innocent into plea deals leading to mass incarceration. Some states are prosecuting poor and blacks folks without lawyers, court appointed or not.
