(i.e. the side that faces the mall)

what's really going to be interesting logistically, is how the march crowd will converge with the taste of dc. both are happening just a few blocks away from each other.

Metro and downtown DC is going to be crazy hectic tomorrow!

82 y/o Farrakhan--his speech was excellent.

Second most memorable speaker, was some NOI Lieutenant, who was shilling for gifts of $20 or more, "and if you give a $100 bill, we won't have change for you" to be done at the giving stations located approx every 1000' on the Mall.

Trying to figure out what exactly the fundraising was for, someone informed me that the NOI is currently deeply indebted to Scientology, and that NOI members have been having to volunteer at Scientologist bookstores and events for quite some time, to settle the debt.
Though I haven't been able to substantiate the info, I don't remember the strong fundraising effort at the original event 20 years ago.

Also, at least one in ten NOI guards I saw, patrolling and standing sentry, had their hair processed and parted.

I thought the COS gave them money to increase their profile in the Black community. I read that the auditing sessions for NOI members were suppose to be free.

Farrakhan of all people trusted the "white devils." Amazing.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/12/opinion/million-man-march-20-years-on.html?_r=0

I'd just add that what people saw at the march wasn't unity. It was fear. Black folks don't know how to get free, so we continue to cling to symbolic marches and false prophets. There was nothing revolutionary about that event, and I doubt it will lead to organizing in our communities. Farrakhan's remarks about Black women and our Black LBGTQ brothers and sisters were embarrassing. Puritanical moralism and respectability politics have never saved us. Once again, Farrakhan and the Nation simply demonstrated their ability to draw a crowd and collect money from poor people. We need to stop falling for it.

Most of the black activists and intellectuals I know didn't attend for that reason.

I'm so glad that the ways in which we constructed black manhood 20 years ago are being dismantled. Instead of clinging to antiquated notions of black masculinity and respectable behavior, we should expedite their demise.

It shouldnt matter who organized it.

There were a lot of people at the million man march who didnt follow or care for the NOI.

Its a shame that some people feel the need to discredit or pick apart a march because of patriarchy or Farrakhans beliefs.

We need a perfect promotor now for marches?

We already know that Black folks can go to marches and listen to charismatic religious leaders. The real question is what can Black people after the symbolic moment ends. How deep is our commitment to each other? What are we willing to do once we get home?

>It shouldnt matter who organized it.
It does matter. The NOI is a violent, corrupt patriarchal organization that should not be calling for marches. They have harmed our people in many ways and never atoned for it.

No, what's a shame is your (and other Black men's) continued belief that Black women and Black LBGTQ folks should silently accept patriarchy and heterosexism, or be accused of disunity. That's the false unity that continues to undermine our freedom struggle. Do you think sisters and LBGTQ people are leading the BLM movement so only yall can get free? Wth?

And let's be clear that the only reason Farrakhan called this march was so the NOI would have some relevancy in the BLM movement. He failed miserably because Black Nationalists refuse to acknowledge intersectionality.

that is up to US... the March is the March. Not sure how you can get upset at a March because the people didn't follow through the way you hoped. I'm sure some people made a commitment and folowed through. its foolish to think all need to step up or its a failure.

If an organization called a March for a million people, they should have also had some post-March organizing opportunities in place. The NOI has that capacity but failed in that regard.

>>>It shouldnt matter who organized it.
>>It does matter. The NOI is a violent, corrupt patriarchal
>>organization that should not be calling for marches. They
>have
>>harmed our people in many ways and never atoned for it.
>
>they have also helped a ton of Men in many ways. No
>organization is perfect.

I'm not expecting perfection, but I don't expect people claiming to love Black people to sexually exploit Black women. Nor is it ok that Nation leaders steal economic resources from their membership.

>>>There were a lot of people at the million man march who
>>didnt
>>>follow or care for the NOI.
>>>
>>>Its a shame that some people feel the need to discredit or
>>>pick apart a march because of patriarchy or Farrakhans
>>>beliefs.
>>>
>>>We need a perfect promotor now for marches?
>>
>>No, what's a shame is your (and other Black men's) continued
>>belief that Black women and Black LBGTQ folks should
>silently
>>accept patriarchy and heterosexism, or be accused of
>disunity.
>>That's the false unity that continues to undermine our
>freedom
>>struggle. Do you think sisters and LBGTQ people are leading
>>the BLM movement so only yall can get free? Wth?
>>
>>And let's be clear that the only reason Farrakhan called
>this
>>march was so the NOI would have some relevancy in the BLM
>>movement. He failed miserably because Black Nationalists
>>refuse to acknowledge intersectionality.
>
>huh? so the NOI timed the 20 year anniversary just to jump on
>the BLM wagon? OK, if you say so...

No, BLM has been in the streets organizing. The anniversary was coming up and Farrakhan tried to jump on the bandwagon. The problem is that his message doesn't reflect the ideals of the current movement. BLM has already moved passed the limits of Black Nationalism.

Black male atonement

This march was all inclusive and was a demand for Justice.

And, not for nothing, there was a huge contingent from the BLM movement. Not to mention family members from each of the recent high profile law enforcement deaths were in attendance, they also and had moments to speak to the 100's of thousands in attendance.

I bet that a Million Woman March today would be do a better job of pushing back against sexism and including LGBT perspectives. And if it didn't, I wouldn't attend that either.

I'm sure some women put each other up on pedestals in their speech.

Were Black men bitching about facetime or recognition at the milion woman march?

and if some did I bet yall told them to sit their ass own somewhere.

How the fuck is it a negative for Black men to tell other Black men to be the breadwinners in their household.

Yall really need to be the focus at every gathering? Really?

There would not have been a need for a Million Woman March if all Black people were asked to come to DC in 1995. Also, no one from the MWM asked Black men to "stay home" like the MMM. It was sexist and just bad organizing.

You said the MWM was an awesome experience. I bet it wouldn't have been as awesome if men tried to get up in the mix or if gay men write articles about being excluded and failing to include them in the planning and execution

The MMM was for men... sorry if it hurt your feelings but it wasn't about yall. It's like a guys night out and that one dudes wife insisting on going because guys just can't do shit by themselves.

I'm not even a farrakhan supporter and there were a lot of Men AND women AND gays there who weren't NOI supporters...

not sure why people are in here arguing about what the March didn't do. The March was a symbol and some of us went home and made things happen in our communities and some didn't do a damn thing.

..and that happens with all movements. BLM is popular now but 10 years from now someone will write an article asking what impact BLM had long term and the cycle will continue.

yall can try all day long but you can't take away what we experienced in DC 20 years ago.

but an event calling for all Black folks to organize together would have been more powerful and sustainable. The rejection of patriarchy and heterosexism back in 1995 would've led to real unity and pushed our freedom struggle further along. I'm not sure why that's so difficult for you to understand.

We needed more than just a symbol back in 1995, and even more so today. I don't care about your feelings or memories. I care about organizing our people towards real freedom, rather than constantly recalling some moment from history when we "felt" unified.

You said the MWM was an awesome experience. I bet it wouldn't

Whether or not women are present at a march for men, a discussion of ways to eradicate misogyny should be on the agenda. A discussion of ways to liberate ALL men, not just the heterosexual, cis-gender and God-fearing ones, should be on the agenda.

There's no excuse for not doing better in 2015. Any effort to create gender-based unity by marginalizing already suffering populations can go to hell.

>How the fuck is it a negative for Black men to tell other
>Black men to be the breadwinners in their household.

Because it reinforces sexist gender norms that hurt lots of people.

In response to Reply # 0

and this was before social media. I couldn't go anywhere without seeing the poster or hearing people talking about it. My dad took me to a couple organizing meetings for people trying to get there from around the country and discussing platform and there seemed to be a huge groundswell of support for the concept - from just getting to DC to not spending any money and staying home from work. There were women who greeted us at the train station with breakfast and words of encouragement. Although I was just 15, it seemed like something everyone was behind.

This time around, I didn't hear anything about it until this week. Granted, 20 years ago, I was in Baltimore, and now I'm in Atlanta - but it seemed to have just popped up with no word and become more of a wedge for those who felt they weren't properly addressed than anything. I'm scratching my head as to what happened....

Streets won't let me chill.

And saying he was only complicit is likely giving him too much benefit of the doubt.

Now add on that he's a homophobe and an anti-semite and a mysogonist.

now add on the fact that he's not apologized or backed away from any of yhat shit i mentioned above.

now add on the fact that...

oh my god, how is it even a debate that this guy has done more to hurt black ppl than most ppl walking the earth today.

He's a piece of shit. Fuck him and his march.

It's not like folks "hate" on him for trivial reasons.

He has set us as a ppl back at least 50 years.
