"The East Coast sound is slowly making a comeback into the club/radio"
Tue Sep-22-15 11:46 AM by -DJ R-Tistic-

It's been a while since the East had a sound that was dominant on radio or in the club. Even with Jay and several other East Coast artists having some hits the last few years, it wasn't the same way that you can identify a L.A. (Mustard on the) beat, or a South/Trap beat. Sure, some folks say "Rap isn't Regional anymore" but this isn't the case at alllll in the clubs, especially the more hood spots.

But yeah...I feel like this new sound started with a few songs from around 2011, such as French Montana "Shot caller" and Meek Mill's hits, which had a darker and faster feel than a lot of the South's songs, although it was 808 heavy. I think Shmurda "Hot nigga" last year was really what got things in motion, along with tracks like Troy Ave. "All about the money."

A lot of East Coast sounding club songs right now are in that 85 BPM range...which is faster than all the Trap, but slower than the L.A. songs. A lot of them have dark piano loops, heavy 808/Bass vs a Bassline, and the snares hit hard. And surprisingly, some of the songs aren't even coming from East Coast artists....I'll argue that Rico Richie "Poppin" and "Back n forth" - carry this sound, along with Ray Jr. "Biggie."

French Montana "Off the rip" is another one that fits the sound, just as "I'm a coke boy" did a few years ago. Also Chinx ft. Jadakiss "Dope house." I would even say that Drake's "Energy" and "10 bands" fit this same sound. Some of these tracks aren't too far off from Future's faster songs like "Trap niggas" and "Stick talk."

It sounds different, and it's a retro re-make, but I'm also digging this Baltimore remake of their classic called "Bank rolls." It sounds like 2007 "Toe wop" Harlem, but that beat still goes.

I actually think it's great that we might finally have three completely different sounds in the club at once again...most of the decade has basically been slower Trap and L.A./Mustard, with not much other variety. I want to see what Jay, Nas, and even some of the lyrical/non-commericial NY heads can come up with. It is probably the closest commercial descendant to Boom Bap I've heard since the Kanye/Just Blaze/Dipset chipmunk soul era.

L.A.

It's 2015. L.A. songs shouldn't sound like Ain't no fun, G'd up, or Black Superman. And NY songs shouldn't sound like Who got da props, Scenario, or even Flipside.

The South completely changed the game up, and the West, East, AND Midwest had to adjust their sound, just like the West's run in the 90's influenced the other regions. So with that...this sound here is an evolution of the gritty, darkness of NY, but it takes that bass heaviness from Toomp/The South and speeds it up. Same way that for L.A., Mustard's sound has the speed of the West Coast, the Bass sound of the Bay, but the 808s and other elements of the South (Collipark Snap, Lil Jon "Hey!" adlib, Quarter note clap from New Orleans).

I could have even titled it saying that the East Coast has evolved into a new sound that is starting to become dominant, but that's too long. It's no way to say the Ray Jr. song or Troy Ave sound like Toomp and them, though.

I remember "Run Ricky Run" which was basically "OG Bobby Johnson"

*Listens to the track*

Yeah, this track here definitely sounds more Trap/South, tempo, drumwise and his flow. I wonder if it'll cross over, is it getting play in the South?

best direction to go in finding a new sound. Some of those songs do sound more South, such as Meek "Burn" and "Hot nigga," but to me, the speed of the songs is the main thing that makes them different. It doesn't have that 50-75 BPM Bounce, and the tempo itself is more native to the East Coast. The overall atmosphere and sounds used tend to be more traditional to the East as well.

As said before, I doubt any "TRUE" East Coast sound will return. Same way that I don't even see the UGK/Outkast more Soulful, Bassline style sound making a dominant return anytime soon, although it can be incorporated with this modern Trap sound.

I think Drake's producers Vinylz, Boi 1da and Jahlil Beats are ushering in a new 'east coast' sound.

0-100 is still biggest but and Energy follows in the paradigm (start with "Started from the bottom") as well as Hot Nigga..

They are 83-92 BPM songs with short (sometimes 1 bar) loops and slight more distorted drums. The drums arent as round as the southern 808s and snares crack more.

decade to me.

Started from the bottom has that same vibe and feel too. I figured you would get what I meant since you're a producer/artist too...I know I look at a lotta shit technically more so than the surface of it. Same way people will say "Mustard stole the Bay sound!!!" but if I break it down, they don't wanna hear it.

Funny thing is...

People FULLY gloss over the Jerk era when they say that. Like Mustard was a high school kid when jerkin was poppin. That is 100% a direct influence and part of the evolution to the "Mustard" sound.

People don't realize that L.A. kids who were in HS anywhere like 04-09 were into Hyphy WAAAAY way way more than G-Funk. Mustard didn't even start producing until 2009, so of course his sound is more Hyphy influenced, yet...it still doesn't sound like Hyphy. They are really pointing out those Bass sounds he uses, and maybe the samples like "Burn rubber" and "This D," but his sound is way calmer and a bit slower than what Hyphy was.

when did the synth basses start heavy for him though?

Listening back it seems like a lot of the early stuff was more bell "Centric" (Tyga - Pop It)

Ionno maybe the addition of Mike Free changed the sound a bit too..

"I'm a boss" and "Dreams and nightmares" which definitely feel more Southern than the others, but the others definitely get club play, especially on the East and at Trendy spots everywhere else.

New era though, I feel a lot of the slow Trap shit is dull and has no energy compared to the Crunk era. No way that I understand how "March madness" is one of the biggest songs of the year.

it sounds like all the lights and fanfare of the club put in musical form. so when you get in the club and all the lights start hitting and they blowing smoke and shit in the air, the song just goes up to 11.

I first heard Bugatti??? I knew that shit was a hitter. Even "Commas" just has energy. "March Madness" is slow, so syzurrpy, and just doesn't have an instant club appeal to me at all. It's always a few songs I just don't understand that blow up over others.

They dance moreso to the 808 heavy bass drops than anything else....so whenever I'm going through songs, they will dance to anything that has a familiar sounding modern 808 drum track, and they don't really dance to the 80's and 90's Boom Bap or L.A. sounding drums.

It's even songs that are complete remakes of 90's songs, except they have modern drums, and they only dance to the modern versions. So yeah, I feel like all the young producers who may grow up in whatever Region still have a sense for what's traditional for their area, but they almost all use those heavy 808 drums underneath.

but "Hot nigga" was bigger than everything Meek had, including "I'm a boss," yet it didn't elevate him.

And maaan I forgot about Monster and B-Boy, mainly because they're faster than everything I mentioned, but they surely fit this new East sound for sure. They were better than most of the album to me..."Check" was a banger too, though. And yep, I wish Kendrick rocked over these type beats.

>I get what you mean re: the East Coast. The energy and
>aggression in these beats is an East Coast thing

Yep for sure. The South's overall mood has changed several times since the late 90's, but it's never had this much of an aggression, especially at this speed.

The sound you describe is actually what happens when East Coast raised producers try to mimic that southern sound. Especially producers who learn how to produce from sampling. The bpm is what gives them away.

Like you said. Mustard is the sound of LA but he sounds nothing like Dre.
Dre himself was reacting to East Coast hip-hop when he started.

Drake deserves to be credited for giving this sound a home on his records.

Point of clarification: It's not just 808s that make the kids dance. After all there are 808s on Tribe's first album from 25 years ago. I think its CLEAN 808s that resonates with the youngings. Due to recording technology (12-bit samplers), 808 kicks sounds a bit dull in early rap when its played next to these 64-bit records. Its just a brighter and deeper sound now than back in the day.

you don't need to be a producer to hear it. I also don't think the OP needed to point out that today's East Coast sound doesn't sound exactly like the beats from 20+ years ago.

Drake is definitely doing this whether he realizes it or not...it's dope that a song like 0-100 can be a hit. It actually goes against the formula that everybody has claimed to understand is needed for a hit...so does "Hot Nigga" which was originally a Lloyd Banks record. Nobody would be saying it sounds like a Southern record if the Lloyd version popped instead of Shmurda.

I know a lot of young producers trying to make it and they all use 808s on all their beats...whether they're making trap beats or more traditional soul sample loops the 808s are the common sound.

I definitely think what jahlil and vinylz and boi1da etc.. are doing is connected to the 90s

Jahlil is very "swizz beatz-ish" with better VSTS and better drum kits

Vinylz is channeling a lot of premo and rza with his piano chopped 1 bar loops.

Stuff is simply being re-imagined. We have countless YouTube videos that can tell you How to make a rza "type" beat. Then you can click on the video for "download lex luger" drums. One day ya mans gives you the "Young Chop Snare" and you are off!

what the hell is this???? It sounded like Wu-Tang 2015 to me...something I woulda never expected to hear at a club, or even from Drake at this point.

As far as Lloyd having "Hot nigga," what's even wilder is that I feel Shmurda made a much, much, much better song for that beat. Lloyd's a better rapper without question, but his version of the song woulda never made it big, even if people did the Shmurda dance in Vine's to it. It's just not nearly as catchy.

Yep, and it's good because a lot of East Coast rappers in the last decade have been trying to Rap over beats that were truly Southern, and it just didn't work. Same way L.A. rappers did the same last decade, and NEVER, ever made a hit from it.

>Like you said. Mustard is the sound of LA but he sounds

Exactly what it is. Mustard doesn't sound like any L.A. producer from the 90's, yet when you hear his beats right now, you KNOW it's a L.A. track.

Yeah, it does sound different from the 808's Tribe used...it's really more similar to the Boyz n da hood, Posse's on Broadway, Everlasting bass type of long holding 808's to me, just cleaner and more flexible.

1 bar loops - a la Rza

Hard drums (not all 808 kit either)

80-92 bpms

Most of the producers doing this are east coast cats.. Vinylz, jahlil, even if boi-1da takes credit on some..

Seems pretty east coast to me

Thats fair... I mean there are surely producers outside NYC that can boom bap better than most...

I only used their origin because environment influences sound imo

I think Montana and Chinx are the ones really fit into your idea. Montana's songs because they use recognizable samples and added that popular trap low-end. the Chinx songs is just raw in a very mid-late 90s type of way. had never heard it BTW

Meek's songs just sound like the trap sound on meth. Nothing east coast boom-bappy IMO

Drake's Energy is that Toronto sound, which is a blend of various regions, maybe, but not necessarily east coast

that Tate Kobang song is dope as hell, never heard it. def sounds like, ioneno. shit is just dope. def doesn't fall into the trap sound tho, which is refreshing. and he does that singy-yet lyrical style very well

lastly, "Hot Nigga" is the only song that is a hit from the ones you listed, but it fits too IMO
