"My dad's friend's son is about to spend 827,328 years in jail"

Ok, maybe only 239,283 since the officer didn't die. But WTF....

http://wreg.com/2015/05/27/memphis-police-officer-shot-2/

Three charged in shooting of Memphis Police officer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. β€” Three people have been charged in the shooting of a Memphis Police officer.

The officer, who was shot Wednesday night has been released from the hospital.

Dennis Murphy, 39, has been charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, using a gun during a felony and being a felon in possession of a handgun.

Alan Sullivan, 40, and Gwendoly Gordon, 32, have both been charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault.

The Organized Crime Unit officer was shot in the chest while serving a warrant at an apartment in the 4100 block of Eastwind.

The officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest.

The three people charged were arrested at the Hillcrest Apartments on Eastwind Dr. after an hours-long barricade situation after the shooting.

--------------------------------------------------------

He's the main one they speak about, Dennis. And I'll tell you, dude came from an extremely good home. No matter how hard his parents tried with him, he still kept acting up and wanting to be a dope boy, going back to the days after he dropped out of college. On the surface, some people have said "they must not have done something right" but from the various times I was around them, I just feel he was the type that just didn't get it, period.

I still remember when I went to Memphis back in 93, and he put me up on Arrested Development...he played Tennessee the entire day that he drove me around.

and it's to the point that they've finally given up...no bailing him out this time. They bailed him out basically every time he was in trouble, and he's the type to put on such a good face around them. "Oh the wrong crowd has got me again, I am gonna make a difference now" "I promise I'll never sell drugs again, I love you all too much to do that" and they knew it was all fake, but being their only son (they have a daughter), they still kept up hope.

But it's hurting them BAD....like, the mom already has some health issues, but she hasn't slept in a good 2-3 days at ALL. And the way Memphis is, the ENTIRE city knows and will find out about it. The dad is well respected in the Black community there, so it's such a bad look overall.

your point is for the person to die in jail. i get that. sentence any human being old enough to get charged with a crime serious enough to warrant being locked up forever and giving them that buck guarantees they'll die in prison.

but they be doin the most with those sentences...

*edit*

this post reminded me of guys getting sentenced to 200 or 300 years in prison.

here's a list of a few:

Because frankly while most people can go either way depending on upbringing and environment. I believe there are some people who are bad seeds and no matter what will always find a way to fuck up. I'm not sure I could handle it.

men are so simple, and so subject to present necessities, that he who seeks to deceive will always find someone who will allow himself to be deceived. (c)Niccolς Machiavelli

He 40 years old. At dang near 40 if he still trying to sell drugs it's a career choice. He knows what type of retirement options he has.

That's too bad for his parents.

I've known many parents who will do everything in their power to save their kids except say no. I don't know those people to say that's them. The story you told reminds me of that type of a situation.

to jail for 9 months a few years ago, and they just "KNEW" that would be his rock bottom and turning point.

But I'm sure that being a parent, you always see things a whole lot different. Some parents have that "no, not my son! The cop must have broken in and didn't identify himself, and then shot himself!" while some never realize that continuously paying for their bailouts is enabling them. In this case, I think it took something this extreme for them to finally give up hope, which is an almost impossible thing for parents to do, especially those who've been close and involved their whole life.

There are just some life lessons I am not willing to get in the way of. It seems like you've alluded to him being in trouble early, prior to needing to be bailed out.

Those early/teen years are when I've seen parents covering the most. By the time they need to be bailed out it's just something else on the list of parental interference in the consequences of their child's choices.

IMO after someone's been bailed out once, any return trips are because they are ok with jail/prison being an option. Therefore it is not my place to interfere with their choices because I think it is a horrible place. Doesn't mean it's not painful to witness. It's painful anytime a child makes a choice that differs from their parent and suffers because of it. It hurts to watch but it's their choice.

Quite frankly I'd rather see someone do a year or less on a minor charge than be looking at 20 to life with muliple charges or special circumstances. I have people I knew as kids who went in at 17/18 and are just getting out now, 20+ years later. Just like you said, they started early and in some cases their parents were their biggest defenders. Either throwing money at the problem or stepping in to talk to someone on their behalf.

somewhere in that home there was probably dysfunction. bailing him out every time wasn't good, imo.

In response to Reply # 30

the bailouts were just them being optimistic that he would change.

His sister is completely normal and has had no issues. He's just been a bad seed, as others mentioned. I didn't grow up in there every day, but my dad is super close with them, and has always talked about them and how supportive they've been for the two kids, along with relatives and anyone else they've known. They were always good financially, but weren't on that rich spoiled side either...I know some kids come from rich homes where the parents don't pay much attention to them, or either give them everything that's wanted.

It's just an example that it's not always about what goes on in the home, at all. I'm sure others here have seen kids turn out to be like this, regardless of what their family background was.

lives in Jacksonville, Fl. Police came to my sister's home with a team of cops and pulled him out. Right in front of her, my niece and my two younger nephews. Dude is 26. Joined the Army...quit, sis brought him down from St. Louis (she moved back to Jville some years ago...he stayed), put him through heating and cooling school (this was 2 years ago). He finished, got a job making cool money, got fired (said the owner of the company was racist...turns out he was fucking the dudes daughter) He hit the streets, not keeping a job, living in a house with bunch of other 20 something dudes with nothing going on. I talked to him...a lot, sent him money sometimes. Fast forward to about 2 months ago...him and the bums get kicked out of the house, he's got nowhere to go. My sister to the rescues. Gets him and brings him back to her house. My sister has a very good job, but she travels ALOT. Deal was, since he wasn't working, he would look out for his sister and brothers while she was away. In charge of the house, keep her car, give him money to hold, etc. She had pics on Facebook of all of them at the beach on Mother's Day...she looked so happy. They all did. Now he's sitting in jail. Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon...in FLORIDA. We don't know a lot. Apparently back in January there was an altercation...some weed was stolen...a dude was shot...the dude who got shot said my nephew was the shooter. The lawyer says it doesn't look good. Told her 20-30 is real. I used to change his diapers and feed him bottles. Shit is so bugged. My family is hurt. My sister is CRUSHED.

I never understood the appeal to living life like that...I guess some dudes just don't have it all in the head.

when he was about to get on the road and leave the Lou 2 years ago to head down there, he stopped by my job and we talked for an hour. I begged him to take this opportunity to do something with his life. His mom was giving him a shot...again. Told him one day he was gonna wake up and be 30...with nothing. He was 24, then. 26, now. Shit looking bleek.
