Where I think it gets difficult is for people who may be too busy for one relationship and then take on two, or for people whose sidepiece does get with the program. Having a sidepiece who is overly emotionally invested is trouble, will start eating into your time, getting jealous, doing stuff that jeopardizes the whole precarious balance. She doesn't have to be a straight pay-for-play type, but she has to have an interest in having some distance and no interest in usurping the main chick's position. Sometimes it's better if the sidepiece is also attached for that reason, though that's no guarantee.

But in no case did I let *no* emotion creep in or leak out. That just seems fucked up.

for the independent man/woman or the man-whore/ho alike, this is a delicate art. the best ones know how and where to parse it out to obviate the moments of tension where you have to say *too* much. probably some people are disgusted by that statement but hey, one person always wants the other person more and these sorts of relationships are often based in some part on a fantasy.
otherwise it's gonna come to a head and you may have to say something or allude to something that you'll really regret, especially if you dont have an exit strategy.
