"Behind the wheels" - djrtistic.tumblr.com

But I'd say start with DJ Blogs. DJ City, iDJ Pool. And then....fuck legally, bc it would cost too much.

Honestly, depending on what you're going to DJ, its going to be very hard to keep it 'legal' in the purest sense since some mixes, etc...are hard to find

not everything can even be gotten legally

at one point i had a great trove of blogs and google had that blog search so i was finding good quality albums for the free

not as easy now. but at this point i just use itunes. i spend maybe 10 minutes trying to find it for free then just do itunes. i don't have the time to be hunting for hours.

and pool sites work for new stuff. i like 1200 squad

and depending on what you play, soundcloud. i get a lot of my new music off there for free. i don't rip off soundcloud though. i only use songs that have downloads b/c they are better quality. please be mindful of your quality. some folks won't do anything less than FLAC or wavs. i aim for 320 but for me, it was really hard to get older dancehall of that quality so the lowest i'll go is 192 but i don't like to

but someone will likely tell me to get with the times, mp3's/muh Serato/CDJ/etc.

Personally, I'd say get a pair of cheap DD decks, a mixer and a lil vinyl to get the fundamentals down WITHOUT automated beat matching and shit like that going on. Learn to do it by ear and your journey will be a much better one.

Plenty of us still use turntables and Serato, that's the standard. But only turntables and vinyls, yeah that would be backwards at this point. Barely anything new is even released on vinyl

as far as DJing out yeah serato w/ 1200s is what i use and what i'm working on getting her to

but learning on vinyl to me is the best way for me to get her there and for her to fully understand. she has access to a crazy record collection already so it makes sense in this case.

you can definitely always resell the serato equipment but before even making that investment i think going the vinyl route can work if you're really serious. you learn the mechanics that way. moving to serato after that is easy peasy.

as far as being ready to spin out ASAP, then that's another story. one i wouldn't advise lol. it's just too much money to put out but that's just me.

lol meanwhile i do bring one to one of my gigs
but in general a spot has them

but honestly everything else is easier once you've learned on turntables

not every spot even has gone the CD route. most clubs in NYC have both.

if he's trying to spin out ASAP then he may just want to get a good portable controller and go from there

'cause any time I've played out there was always decks set up and ready to go. I just bring flight case, crates, headphones, and my own pair of carts and I'm good to go.

what clubs/venues have NOTHING so I know to avoid them shits.

it's a waste of money and the resale sucks
at least w/ 1200s you can probably sell them for the same amount you bought them (or more)

i am teaching someone and i'm making her learn on vinyl. i keep telling her it will be much easier when we move onto digital but i can tell she's frustrated lol

When i sold 'em I got about half what I paid for the whole setup (also sold my mixer).

I don't know about cheap decks these days, but I think that was a pretty good investment on my part.

Back in the day I had several DJ homies and they regularly hooked me up with unreleased promo shit. I have several unreleased hot remixes of __ from back then. We all became friends naturally - I wasn't leeching. If you have DJ homies who know you dig music they might hook you up.

fuck you.

MP3s and the internet mean barely anything is ever rare for real. At best, it might only be a low quality YouTube version.

It's still a few vinyls I have that have songs I've never seen online, but not many at all.

i do some gigs where i bring my own stuff which is usually a turntable and i use instant doubles in serato

i like it but i only do it if the $ is right because cab fare eats into my rate

i rent equipment from him so he thinks this may be the move for me
but honestly im trying to move away from those sort of gigs. mainly b/c i don't have the PA (which i usually rent from him) so why invest in a mobile rig? i'd rather use that money for a new serato box and mixer for the crib.
