"why you think King of New York didn't hit like New Jack city?"

i dig both films and maybe King of New York felt more Chic Gangster or something or maybe Christopher walken felt more cold than Wesley Snipes.

however sorta like how goodfellas birthed the SOrpanos. well King of New York Birthed New Jack City. and yet King of New York felt more east coast and feels more cult there whereas we know how influential the Carter is.

Thats probably my only gripe. It could've been dope if the acting was a bit more convincing.

It's pacing was also a bit better, it had Ice T in his first real movie role, AND it had "New Jack Hustler"... A single I played until the shit sounded muffled, then I went and bought another copy (along with the soundtrack)

it had a slew of black artists in it(keith sweat, CW, Ice-T, Troop(cameo)) that were popular at the time and it hit because it showcased the drug problem at the height of the crack epidemic which made it more compelling to watch.

NJC was a flashy, MTV derived, action-flick. Actually, in spite of the presence of Walken, KONY is pretty much a b-movie in terms of acting, environment etc.

That said, *I* prefer KONY but I'm a fan of Ferrara's work in general, from "Driller Killer" and "Ms. 45" to "bad lieutenant" and even "the addiction" which I think is a really cool vampire movie. Haven't seen his later stuff but I'm not up on this shit like I used to be...

New Jack City meanwhile just isn't my thing, NOT because it's a "black" movie but rather because it represents a certain flashy 90's aesthetic I don't find appealing neither visually nor in terms of story; everything just feels so self-consciously "cool"... and it suddenly doesn't feel that cool decades down the line whereas I actually think KONY has both more charisma, character and athmosphere while simultaneously capturing something time-typical. It's not really an amazing movie like, say, Goodfellas though; it's a cool b-movie, nothing else...
