i went there as Stanley K though i had no interest in my scene partner.
the same thing happens w/str8 actors playing str8 characters - they have to play convincingly even when they have no attraction to their partner. like in the Notebook - McAdams and Gosling HATED each other. but you can't see it on the screen. they have love scenes - hated each other. played it convincingly.

I doubt sowhat has experienced feelings that you have not. and as for the feelings of isolation that come from the isolation of being gay...
you could find a way to relate because your black. or you could draw on how it feels having a kid with special needs. or being in the military and feeling weird about how you left.
you could take some experience in your life and take the dna of that emotional experience and put it into your role.
and you could also do research by studying other gay ppl.
if you could act, you could do it just fine.

I'm not gay. I knew this character was gay and it would be a reach for me but I wanted to challenge myself. Same way he tried to learn a Baltimore accent, is the same way he studied to be a gay "thug."
I guess I could list other ways many of know he's not gay but it doesn't matter. But I guess you'd only accept this as an answer if you speak to him personally.
if you are...lets say a dog person. hate cats. & youre called upon to REALLY love a cat for a scene...that will be hella hard. you'll have to pet the cat, scratch the cat....get covered in cat hair, etc. you prolly wont be believable.

We arent there 5 minutes before this MFer finds a lounge chair and starts unbuttoning his early 90's short sleeve Single Dad Shirt talking about "i think im gonna take some sun"
WTF
I looked down at him over my sunglasses, made eye contact, and just shook my head.
Then he starts spitting Dad game to the cocktail waitress who was pretty close to his age.
And then he TOTALLY REDEEMED HIMSELF by striking up a conversation with Daniel Bell, a musical icon to me, based on being old me and he hung for a while. I even got a pic to commemorate the occasion.
