"What's going on at Hot 97 in NYC?"
Tue Jan-27-15 07:41 PM by Kira

Let's discuss their somewhat recent roster moves because this is relevant to hip-hop:

Left Hot 97:

Cipha Sounds fired, allegedly (RIP to Juan Ep podcast?)
Angie left
Mister Cee left
Ebro left as PD

Joined Hot 97:

Nessa from Cali to take Angie's spot (relevant due to work on Girl Code and radio)
Pio Ferro the new Program Director

What is going on up there?

He could be quirky funny without the pressure of being outrageous, which is what they want on a morning show.

But he's not an interviewer, which hurt him, and he got left in the cold when Ebro came back to being an on-air personality.

If NY decides to add any, I could see some of these personalities getting new life there, since they align pretty well with that lane having been there the first time around.

I happened to stumble across them while looking for sports, but I think of the three the better is 99.3 since it's privately owned - and are a little more daring with their playlist. The other two which are Radio One and Cumulus, pretty much play the 80s, 90s, 00's hip-pop standards.

I would rather get play on Ryan Seacrest show than HOT97 for that mainstream push If i had to pick between the two. HOT97 is very niche and just too NY focused its really no different than most local stations at this point. Its def not the make or break for an artists career its just more about being on a station that has the type of legacy in the culture type thing now.

I mean, granted, the station is most def a platform, but they give themselves WAY too much credit in this day and age.

Honestly is anyone checking radio for new artists or tracks? Online is pretty much were new tracks are being discovered. Most of the new hit songs have become hits from youtube/vine/instagram

since theres so many other ways to first hear an artist those ALWAYS ALWAYS will be the first place to hear them before radio. If its really good tho and the label or artist are making that mainstream push radio is where that helps take it to that next level of just a core audience to being pushed in everyone else's face.

the people listening aren't looking for new shit. they typically want to hear the dirt and laff while hearing a 5 song rotation.

radio folks know they're not breaking artist anymore, which is why the have Ebro type folks.

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

for his loyalty, he got an "effective immediately"
FOH, I wish him the best, no ill will at all, but how stupid is that?

Now watch him blow up on the comedy scene while 47 year old still wearing fitteds Flex gets canned when they switch to straight up pop format

he had been mulling it over for a little while after the multiple changes at the station, from on-air personalities & execs/mgmt

someone must have tipped Angie off, cuz she was ghost

I think Cipha alluded to this the last time he saw Jay-Z (me speculating) but he said Jay-Z was asking him real darted/focused questions about radio & programming etc.

Juan EP is still alive & well as it's not directly connected to Hot97, they just used Hot97 to connect with artists going/coming through the station

or they scheduled certain celebs who aren't on Hot 97 to come to the studio to do interviews.

Ciph was loyal & took some time to think it over after talking to Rosenberg on air.
