12710929, What's going on at Hot 97 in NYC?
Posted by Kira, Tue Jan-27-15 07:29 PM
Let's discuss their somewhat recent roster moves because this is relevant to hip-hop:

Left Hot 97:

Cipha Sounds fired, allegedly (RIP to Juan Ep podcast?)
Angie left
Mister Cee left
Ebro left as PD

Joined Hot 97:

Nessa from Cali to take Angie's spot (relevant due to work on Girl Code and radio)
Pio Ferro the new Program Director

What is going on up there?
12710932, i was just reading an article that says cipha sounds resigned.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Tue Jan-27-15 07:32 PM
whatever the case is radio in ny been shitty for at least 15 years now.
hope he's able to continue a successful career in whatever he chooses to do
i always liked dude.
12710933, i said it once and I'll say it again...

Cipha Sounds is a TERRIBLE on air personality
12710936, He's got his lane. He was brilliant on Saturday afternoons.
Posted by Teknontheou, Tue Jan-27-15 07:38 PM
He could be quirky funny without the pressure of being outrageous, which is what they want on a morning show.

But he's not an interviewer, which hurt him, and he got left in the cold when Ebro came back to being an on-air personality.
12710934, I didn't realize that about Miss Jones. What time is she on?
Posted by Teknontheou, Tue Jan-27-15 07:34 PM
12710941, That was an allegedly real rumor courtesy of allhiphop.com
Posted by Kira, Tue Jan-27-15 07:42 PM
Apparently, that was an untrue statement so I edited it out of the post.
12711004, NESSA COMIN

bout to be watching the shit out of H97 youtube channel
12711006, Atlanta currently has three "old school" hip hop stations
Posted by Overqualified, Tue Jan-27-15 10:50 PM
If NY decides to add any, I could see some of these personalities getting new life there, since they align pretty well with that lane having been there the first time around.
12711019, I had no idea.

I haven't listened to the radio since Laffy Taffy came out. The most current thing I know is that a dude I went to HS with works for that Streetz 94 station.
12711207, 102.9, 97.9, and 99.3
Posted by Overqualified, Wed Jan-28-15 10:07 AM
I happened to stumble across them while looking for sports, but I think of the three the better is 99.3 since it's privately owned - and are a little more daring with their playlist. The other two which are Radio One and Cumulus, pretty much play the 80s, 90s, 00's hip-pop standards.

12711041, I Don't Think They Have a Dedicated Station

Chubb Rock has Old School Flavaz on Saturdays from 7-9 on WBLS
12711013, RE: power105 kicking that ass, that's what's happening
Posted by bucknchange, Tue Jan-27-15 10:58 PM
hot 97 got 'legacy' & summerjam
they never tried to groom anyone, like same said flex 3 years away from being on wbls
they should be paying someone like melo-x or va$htie to takeover
they all washed except ebro
12711034, i like to listen to ciph talk about improv and comedy stuff
Posted by shamus, Wed Jan-28-15 12:26 AM

12711045, juan ep is not a hot 97 property. thus, it will continue.
Posted by PROMO, Wed Jan-28-15 01:35 AM
12711057, Rosenberg tweeted Juan Ep is going to continue.

12711076, How about a lack of BLACK FACES at a NYC hiphop station?
Posted by KingMonte, Wed Jan-28-15 07:17 AM
Fuck them on that level alone.
Then, it's radio.
12711126, Oh damn. Who are the black people at Hot97 now?

12711245, Everything I've read about her says she's Kuwaiti
Posted by Teknontheou, Wed Jan-28-15 10:31 AM
(I thought she was Latina, but apparents not.)
12711085, most of these stations need to realize they don't break artists anymore.
Posted by Heinz, Wed Jan-28-15 08:17 AM
I would rather get play on Ryan Seacrest show than HOT97 for that mainstream push If i had to pick between the two. HOT97 is very niche and just too NY focused its really no different than most local stations at this point. Its def not the make or break for an artists career its just more about being on a station that has the type of legacy in the culture type thing now.

12711288, yeah that's why I cringe when Rosenberg goes on and on about what..
Posted by daryloneal, Wed Jan-28-15 10:49 AM
they do for artists.

I mean, granted, the station is most def a platform, but they give themselves WAY too much credit in this day and age.
12711101, Has radio gone past its relevancy?
Posted by flionel, Wed Jan-28-15 08:43 AM
Honestly is anyone checking radio for new artists or tracks? Online is pretty much were new tracks are being discovered. Most of the new hit songs have become hits from youtube/vine/instagram
12711140, Yeah they dont break the artists anymore
Posted by Heinz, Wed Jan-28-15 09:23 AM
since theres so many other ways to first hear an artist those ALWAYS ALWAYS will be the first place to hear them before radio. If its really good tho and the label or artist are making that mainstream push radio is where that helps take it to that next level of just a core audience to being pushed in everyone else's face.

12711323, radio still has a place. not as much tho.
Posted by tariqhu, Wed Jan-28-15 11:04 AM
the people listening aren't looking for new shit. they typically want to hear the dirt and laff while hearing a 5 song rotation.

radio folks know they're not breaking artist anymore, which is why the have Ebro type folks.
12711164, *FUNK FLEX BOMB*

I'm tryna be better off, not better than...
12712107, LOL @ him staying out of loyalty
Posted by j., Wed Jan-28-15 07:37 PM
Power made him a better offer and he's on some company man bullshit
for his loyalty, he got an "effective immediately"
FOH, I wish him the best, no ill will at all, but how stupid is that?

Now watch him blow up on the comedy scene while 47 year old still wearing fitteds Flex gets canned when they switch to straight up pop format
12712116, Cipha didn't get fired. if you listen to Juan EP which is not Hot97....
Posted by Benji, Wed Jan-28-15 08:01 PM
he had been mulling it over for a little while after the multiple changes at the station, from on-air personalities & execs/mgmt

someone must have tipped Angie off, cuz she was ghost

I think Cipha alluded to this the last time he saw Jay-Z (me speculating) but he said Jay-Z was asking him real darted/focused questions about radio & programming etc.

Juan EP is still alive & well as it's not directly connected to Hot97, they just used Hot97 to connect with artists going/coming through the station

or they scheduled certain celebs who aren't on Hot 97 to come to the studio to do interviews.

Ciph was loyal & took some time to think it over after talking to Rosenberg on air.
