"so many wasted opportunities for interviews. "

if we think about the geniuses in the arts that have been interviewed...
and all of the things we could have learned from them,

it's pretty fucking sad how many of the questions entertainment reporters
are completely asinine.

John Mayer is a genius guitar player
and a damn good song writer.

he get interviewed and ppl ask who he's dating.

Oprah Winfrey asked Michael Jackson if he was a virgin.

i mean... you get to sit down with a genius,
and THESE are your questions?

when they do ask about the actual art,
they never do research.

They ask superficial questions that have been answered before on previous interviews.
they never go deeper.
"what's your favorite song?"
"what inspires you to make music?"
"do you write the music first or the lyrics?"

is that really what the ppl want to know?

is that the best question you have when in the presence of greatness?

did you think about these questions for longer than 5 min before the interview?

there are geniuses now dead that may have had insights that we'll now never know.
it's a shame.

a minority of people wanted the deeper stuff.

besides, most probably dont have a great enough knowledge to get deep with questions. You think if oprah sat down with phil she gonna ask about the intricacies of the triangle? no, she gonna ask which chip year was the most special and where does he wear his 11th ring.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

In response to Reply # 0

So Grohl decides to make a doc about a legendary studio that's closing down because he's going to buy the legendary board to preserve history and such. Everyone and their mother talk about how the studio and this board were magical. So he gets a segment where he's interviewing the designer of the board Rupert Neve and what does he do? Roll his eyes and do a voice over talking about he has no idea what Neve is talking about.

The fuck!!

I'm probably the one person trying to listen over Grohl's voice over to hear what Neve is saying because that's my shit. But it just pissed me off because everyone in the movie is talking about how magical that shit is but when they get a chance to find out how the magic was made... psh.

Whole segment has really kept me from watching that new shit he's got, cause i'm like fuck that shit. I want to know the details not just the myth and magic.

i think prince was less defensive because rock is an artist,
and he approached him that way.

rock said: "I was looking at some mike tyson footage. Tyson was looking
at old clips of himself and said, "i can't beat that guy." When you see clips of
your old performances, do you think you can beat that guy?

Do you WANT to beat that guy?"

i mean that's not the most mind blowing question on earth,
but it's closer to something someone would want to ask prince.
I heard the question, and i cared about the answer.

And prince gave the question some thought, and gave a cool answer.

That's a good interview.

To your point about the documentary, i agree.
One of the reasons i like the "classic album" series
is that they ask musicians questions that pertain to music.

I don't know if they get into engineering the way
and engineer would want to hear something unpacked...
but if an engineer started talking about something deep, they'd let him talk at least.

when he gives interviews to Berkeley's school of music,
the questions and answers are great.

he did a good interview with Oxford recently.

this post was me being snobbish about entertainment gossip, generally.

Oprah's fans don't give a shit about how MJ writes songs or see's the world.

If you wanted a John Mayer interview to talk about his skill I wouldn't read RS to find that out.

and the staff are often listening in on the interview and will terminate the whole interview or insist on a new line of questions should the interviewer ask a question that's beyond the bounds.

if they were asked intelligent questions about their art,
i am sure they'd answer.

this post is about judging the demographic of ppl that
eat up these awful interviews.

the interviews are awful because i, personally,
find it impossible to care about who Michael Jackson was dating.

i would have loved to hear how sitting in the studio
while stevie was making his run of classics, though.

i suppose MJ could have just said he wanted to talk about that stuff.
and yes, Oprah did her job by asking what the ppl wanted to hear.

i regret that ppl want to know that stuff.
because the interview would be better (to me)
if Oprah went deeper.
