"What kind of fitness/health goals you have for 2018?"

trying to run a marathon?
bench press 300 lbs (is that a lot? idk)?
lose 20 lbs?

i'm kind of burnt out on just pure weightlifting so lately i've been obsessed w/ all these handstand and balancing tricks i've been seeing on IG and in my yoga classes.

being the competitive person i am that's my goal for the year. learn to do handstands and planche variations with full control

the reason I say out perform Jimmy is because we work out with the same exact amount of w8 and it bothers me because i'm 2yrs younger and bigger...I think I got him on a few things and he has me on some

but yeah...I sorta 'compete' with him

4 plates has been my goal for like 2 years but I had a few setbacks...I think I can make this happen by March

Body fat.
I’m at about 14 now. Coming from 17 earlier this year.

I want to be doing 2-3 HIIT sessions a week. Doing one a week if I’m lucky now.

Also want to learn to cook some healthier quick meals.

You can find online. All you need is a tape measure. It’s less accurate than calipers though.

You can also google percentage body fat. You’ll find a few images that will give you a rough idea of what the different percentages look like.

was already somewhat questionable in the pre-Trump years, especially when it comes to dairy/cow related foods. At least that's what I remember reading long before Trump was a serious contender for the presidency. I didn't really think about it, but I suppose things in that area would get worse under his presidency since his cabinet will make standards easier for large agribusiness industries.

I'm essentially a pescatarian Mon-Fri, and even then have fish maybe once. It's proven much easier than I expected. Will never swear off meat because I enjoy certain items too much, but I will have a week or two without eating any and it doesn't seem weird anymore. Roasted veggies are the truth

22. "Mostly diet and exercise"
In response to Reply # 0

My diet is okay. I have a standard Western diet but I don't eat red meat and don't eat fried foods. My portion control is good. And my junk food is pretty low, mostly just the occasional handful of tortilla chips or Cheeze-Its.

Thankfully, I've been able to lose a little over 30 pounds the last couple of years. (I went into a deep depression about four years ago and put on 50 lbs. It felt worse because I was in good shape at the time which came after a period of losing nearly 60 pounds.)

I've noticed that my mood has been a lot better since my diet has been clean and I stumbled on a couple of books that offers suggestions on tailoring a diet which may help stabilize mental illness so I want to clean up my diet a bit more by incorporating more vegetable based meals.

I also want to get to the gym more often. Up until this year, I was good for at least two trips to the gym if not three or more. But I hit a wall in February, probably related to pushing myself into anxiety with concern over my body's health. It also didn't help that the web design projects that happened to fall in my lap seemed to be in a perpetual state of deadline. I didn't feel I had the 3 hours a day to commit to the hour of travel to get to the gym (I take the bus.) 45 or 60 minutes of exercise and then 25 minutes to shower.

I find that I always enjoy working out but sometimes talk myself out of getting prepared and taking the trip. But my main resolution is to keep a sense of personal accountability.

I plan to do this by keeping my thoughts focused on my current task rather than letting float around. If I think about the actual decision rather than get involved with the future, my decision making seems to improve.

Also, I want to further my meditation practice as well. It helps with my discipline which can help me decide to go to the gym when the day comes or to actually make the vegetarian meals during the week.

I have like 60 lbs to go and I solely want it to entail a 305 lb bench and a 400+ lb squat, but it's realistic to accomplish this in the first half of the year. After that, I just wanna get below 200 again and lean out

need to get to 205. problem is I suck at eating well consistently and doing cardio.

other goals include getting to 300 on bench and 350 on squat. got a while to go on both. most I've done on bench I think is 245 and 275 on squats.

I don't think I look strong, but I've gotten stronger over the last couple of years, so I'm happy about that.

Whoever said meditation is practice for death wasn't lying. It's hard to be consistent because it's as if I'm subconsciously afraid of the "emptiness".

I also want to get into yoga, fasting, and maybe a martial art. There is a new 10th planet jiu-jitsu studio next to my place and its calling me.

And this isn't the usual fitness/healthy topic but I'm about due for a "trip". It's been over 3 years since my last one and I need some mental/spiritual spring cleaning.

Don't psyche yourself out, man. haha

I've been meditating daily for the better part of two years now. I still ain't no Doctor Strange, but the brief moments of awareness I've experienced from not chasing my thoughts is like the opposite of death.

Yo if you live near a school close enough to where you could never make an excuse about travel time, I would try it out immediately. Like don't think about it, weigh pros and cons, just get up and go and sign up. BJJ is super strenuous but it can do wonders for you mentally and physically.... maybe spiritually? It's made my life more positive, and most guys I train with say the same thing.

Been several years since my last shroom trip myself. My last one at Kenneth Hahn with the homie while we were visiting Cali was solid.

I guess i don't really understand what it means.

i started doing it this year, i def noticed a difference in how i reacted to thoughts and situations. i improved slightly at being 'in the moment' or present or whatever, but I'm still pretty awful at that. i didn't really notice how much of a difference it made until this month when i fell off pretty hard. i was skipping days, and when i did meditate, i couldn't focus... and the less i did it, the more i found myself flying off the handle at everything. i didn't even put it together why. I'm just now getting back on track

Same. I didn't realize how easily irritated I used to get. Circa 2002, I had severe "monkey mind." I was in deep despair about my trouble focusing lol. Luckily, a friend of mine at the time was a couple of months into regularly going to a sangha and was persistent in getting me interested in the benefits of zazen.

What you feel is common and in fact many experienced monks and nuns actually struggle to meditate for that same reason. One priest I respect said she sometimes has to fight through personal resistance meditate at times because she knows she's going to have to come in contact with that fear as she meditates. Even the Dalai Lama experiences anxiety as he meditates from what I've heard.

But if you're pressing yourself to meditate, that isn't healthy as well. You're going to hear enough criticism from other people during the day so there's no reason to pile that on top of yourself as well. Meditation is difficult and if you're pressing that's added pressure that also isn't going to allow you to fully benefit from your practice.

I asked a woman who is an experienced meditator once about how to improve my consistency and she replied that when I was *ready* to meditate more, that I simply would.

Whether because of the accumulation of heartbreak and trauma (both big and small) or because it's simply part of being human, there's a part of everyone that is in some form of existential crisis. But the fact that you notice that block to your sense of emotional rest is a good thing, in fact. Your awareness of the source of insecurity will become clearer and as a result insights will come to mind which will lead you to take action to further alleviate that anxiety. Whether its simply emoting that anxiety in some way or consciously shifting your attitude about obstacles in your life.

Hope this helps some.

Up my current 3x for brazilian jiujitsu a week to 4 sessions if time and energy allows
Continue with my 1x a week for JKD
Continue with my 1x a week full weight training day

It's not scientific / formula based but it's been having noticeable effects on my health and agility. Before my injury a couple weeks ago I was steady between 202 - 205 lbs. Guy that does cross-fit at my bjj academy was like 'bro what are you on' in the locker room so I guess the regimen and better diet is working. You know when you cut up some people say you actually look BIGGER but that's only when you wear tight shit. In the street maybe I'm looking mad frail lol.

In response to Reply # 0

I fractured a metatarsal the first day of moving by stepping on a tree root in the backyard and proceeded to keep doing physical labor for 21 days in a row(had no idea, just thought it was a sprain/strain). The last day of moving I fell off the back of a U-Haul truck and landed on my left hip and ribs. We were taking trips from DC to the Poconos with a truck and trailer for 4 weeks straight. I didn't get at the time how wrecked my body was.

For the last 2 years, I've been mainly doing yoga, with some occasional bouts of heavy lifting but I could tell my body just wasn't ready for it. I'm still a not fat 6'2" 240(I'd be a ripped AF 220). My squats and swings suck right now, but I will get them back by the end of 2018, I'm still able to press the 88lb Kettlebell for 5 reps per side, so at least I'm not a complete wussy right now.

On the positive side, I've been working the hell out of my shooting and knife fighting skills. Probably incredibly hard to fuck with right now on any level.

I'm sure some of you are in the same boat, but getting old sucks. I can work my ass off, but my body just can't recover like it could even 10 years ago (I'm 46 now). Lifting hard 2 times a week is the most my body can handle, and that's ok with me.

TLDR: Goals: Squat back up to 315 x 10 paused ATG or more, lots of one arm swings with a 48kg bell

a little of both, but let me state that I'm primarily concerned with using a knife for self-defense against multiple attackers, a gunman, etc. as opposed to being the world's best knife on knife fighter. I apply a lot of the SPEAR System defense techniques, ie shit that works in real life, no frills, etc. A lot of techniques that emphasize that a knife should be felt and not seen, at least until it's too late.

I'm in NYC, holla at my inbox if you want to shoot the shit or build.

Everything will go but eggs (for baking... I can't eat them) which I
can now get from a local farm whose chickens are happy and healthy.

I'd like to get as (if not more) active as I was before the knee surgery also.

My main goal is mental health though. I am still struggling with depression
on a daily basis and mostly don't want to be here anymore.

Do you supplement Vitamin D3 and magnesium? They're 2 of the top deficiencies in the U.S., and low levels have been linked with depression. Omega-3 fats has been shown to help with major depression in multiple studies, but a recent Cochrane review raised skepticism in regards to its efficacy.

Even if they don't help with depression, they have so many other benefits (vit D: immunity, energy, bone health, insulin metabolism; magnesium: converts previtamin D into active Vitamin D and is also involved in 300+ biochemical reactions in the body; omega-3: blood triglyceride reduction, metabolic flexibility).

Zinc alone might provide minor benefits but seems to be real good alongside meds (e.g. SSRIs).

The human gut bacteria has profound, wide-reaching effects. A few studies have looked at probiotics and depression. The particular strains used in the studies aren't commercially available, I think. Yakult (those little fermented milk drinks) is available in the U.S., but Yakult and fermented foods seem to be efficacious for anxiety. So maybe try some if depression is anxiety-related.

Other things to look into, but be careful with these (i.e. talk with your doctor about them) because of contraindications or toxicity: SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine), St. John's Wort, creatine, saffron, rhodiola rosea.

Be cautious:
https://examine.com/nutrition/an-update-on-kombucha-understanding-risk-and-evaluating-toxicity/

As for magnesium, it depends on the diet. I do think it's hard to get too much dietary magnesium, but it's far easier to not get enough:

https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Magnesium-HealthProfessional/#h3

Keep in mind, we lose magnesium and electrolytes when we sweat. Low-carb intakes also cause low magnesium and electrolyte levels.

If you think your dietary intake is low, try 1 or 2 tabs of magnesium citrate, diglycinate, or tartate. Oxide is poorly absorbed; don't take that one.

Zinc and Vitamin D deficiencies are strongly correlated with lower testosterone in men. Magnesium less so, but given its importance in the metabolism of Vitamin D into its active form, I'd make it a priority.

A lot of people don't know this but exercise - because of the heat production - increases intestinal permeability ("leaky gut") which would exacerbate the damage done by antibiotics. Several supplements can strengthen/tighten the junctions in the gut lining and increase mucus production to provide the necessary barrier: zinc-carnosine complex (a specific zinc formulation), glutamine, phosphatidyl choline, colostrum, gingko biloba.

NSAIds (eg. ibuprofen) also increases leaky gut. Lots of trainees take that, but the heat-stress from training and the NSAIds is a double whammy.

I highly recommend 2 books - Sonnenburg's The Good Gut and Dietert's The Human Superorganism: How the Microbiome Is Revolutionizing the Pursuit of a Healthy Life - for practical advice on how to repopulate the gut with healthy bacteria.

Another great book is Alanna Collen's 10% Human: How Your Body's Microbes Hold the Key to Health and Happiness. She, too, got wrecked by antiobiotics after getting an infection from ticks. That's actually the first book on the human microbiome that I read. Life-channging read, for me.

Haha. It's amazing, tho: how much we weigh, how hungry we are, what foods we crave, what decisions we make, what we feel, etc. can be impacted by what kind of bacteria inhabit our bodies. Lean people got different bacteria than obese people. Asthmatics, diabetics, gout patients, etc. have different microbes than people who don't have those conditions. There's so much for researchers to discover and we don't know if the microbiome is a symptom or cause but choices for a healthier microbiome (probiotics, prebiotic fiber intake) may reduce symptoms.

Hey, if you got 17 minutes to spare, watch this (I don't remember if I ever posted this link before) -

Ive also cut back a lot on eating out this past couple of months (especially fast food). Id like to keep this going and continue cooking more healthy meals at home.

always been the big kid, big teen, big man.

i've had different times where i dropped lots of lbs but keeping them off eventually became less important as life got more complicated, busy, etc. sadly, i'm in the worst shape of my life right now. it's not a good feeling.

now, i'm 41 (damn, been on OKP for 20 years) and i have a kid and my wife and i think we want another kid. my son is 2 and so right now everything is doable, but when he's 4, 5, 6 years old? if i'm where i'm at now i won't be able to keep up with him, play sports w/ him and whatnot. 2 kids? out of the realm of possibility w/out change.

i don't wanna be that guy. it's not gonna be an easy journey. i'm sure there will be many valleys along with the peaks. i just know i have to stay at it.

gained the most weight i ever had over a 2 year span...then got down to my college weight in less than a year.

my normal walkaround weight was usually in the 200-210 range, even during fluctuating periods of physical activity. then i stopped working out, became a hermit, and stayed tied to a desk eating (self employed grind). ordering out 2-3 times a day some days because i didnt feel like cooking. woke up one day at 230. said i was gonna get things back on track. woke up another day at 270 lol.

had joint issues, sleep apnea issues, heartburn issues...all typsa shit.

literally saved up money to live off of for a while and cut my work load so i could get my health back on track and rejoin life as a fully functioning member of society lol.

if you need any tips/motivation, holla @ me.

but focused more on full body and core exercises instead of the 2 muscle groups/day hypertrophy meathead routines i was used to. included cardio/conditioning as part of the weight training as much as possible (circuits, supersets, etc). so i didnt just rely on 'normal' cardio at the end of the workout or on alternative days. and of course cleaned up my diet.

all of that was for fairly drastic results in a relatively short amount of time tho. you could easily get solid results from less taxing workouts (and a clean diet) to steadily get that 30 lbs off.

at my known highest i was at 325 earlier in the year. but in June i started paying attention after physical exam, weighed in at 309 and now i'm hovering at 260. haven't been keeping up with my diet like i should, but i did drop 7lbs over the holidays, so that's good. i'm fitting into clothes that i couldn't fit into before, and some of them are even too baggy. I'm trying to hold out through the winter and spring with sweaters and jackets before i buy new clothes so i can try and drop more weight before then.

any plans/ideas on how you're going to shed the weight? I pretty much cut carbs out (not completely), no sugary drinks, etc... started walking ~3 miles a day (6k steps). tried interval running but it killed my knees so i need to start training them up. also copped a bicycle and added that to the rotation. Thinking of joining a gym but my heart's not in it, looking at some home gym equipment next.

good luck.

i couldnt start running regularly til around 230...and i used to always run/sprint/jumprope with no problem. had knee issues like you...along with arch and back issues. bike is def a good move. you can cop a good deal on a stepper too. once you get enough weight off, youll be able to run with no problem. constantly work legs and stretch aggressively in the meantime too.

im not sure what type of workouts you plan on doing...but you can get a cage, barbell, plates, dumbbells, kettlebells for pretty cheap from craigslist, offerup, etc.

im fortunate enough to be able to work out from home. if i wasnt, i coulda seen myself being too self conscious to go to the gym and never getting the ball rolling. shit i didnt even wanna be seen outside cutting grass in the summer lol.

thanks. good info, not sure if i was more discouraged that i got injured just trying to run, or that i could barely jog for more than a minute before getting winded. I lasted 4 or 5 outings of interval running (walk 1.5min, run 1min for 25 mins). I'm not sure if it's the weight, the shoes, my form or all of the above that injured my knees . I hit up my doctor on what kind of specialist i should talk to, waiting for response.

These past 6 months have been all cardio, mainly walking, biking once or twice a week for the last couple months and also a little bit of weight lifting using resistance bands. I live in a small apartment so i'm considering getting rid of my kitchen table that i never use and putting in a piece of equipment. I just ordered a Totalgym from Costco i can put in that spot depending on how much space it requires when in use and when folded up. i definitely lean towards doing this solo and a bit shy/embarrassed in public settings. might feel different as the weight hopefully keeps coming off.

I got positive reactions and compliments from people before i even noticed the changes myself. a few "i never thought you'd get it together" made me cringe a bit, but forget them this is for me.

w/out straight up joining a yoga class (which i wouldn't be opposed to once i dropped some lbs) does anyone have any links to any good stretching routines.

man, stretching is killing me. now that i'm old and really out of shape i swear to god all my ligaments are gonna snap as soon as i do anything physical. i REALLY wanna get more flexible.

so, if anyone has any links to stretches or just tips in general, post 'em up here please.

In response to Reply # 97

i dont have a link to a set routine. most of the stuff i do is based off memory from years of trial/error. theres plenty of stuff out there tho.

but that stuff is more about increasing/maintaining mobility and preventing injury in the context of more strenuous workouts.

and (imo) another one of the best ways to increase mobility during your workouts is to actually increase mobility during your workouts, like while youre working out lol. really taking time to perfect your form and get that stretch/deep range of motion on your reps/exercises. real steady deep movement during the negative/eccentric parts of your reps.

yoga is more ideal for overall flexibility but i dont have much experience there (i want to tho).

but honestly in your position...i would start off with something minimally challenging like a warmup and static stretching once or twice a day. there are some disadvantages compared to something like yoga but you can pretty much do the same routine pre/post workout or any time of day, adjust the deepness of the stretches according to your discomfort/pain level, and then move on to more moderate/advanced stuff once your body gets accustomed to the stress/tension without discomfort/pain.

I really just started working out, consistently, in October 2016. Worked out consistently all throughout 2017 and made it part of my lifestyle.
When I first started fucking with the bench press, shit, I could only comfortably press 95 lbs. I just wanted to be able to put the 45 plates on the bar. Now, I can't get pass 185. My goal is 225 by June.

I just about hit all of my fitness goals from last year. Although I've burned some fat and gained muscle, I still don't look how I want to completely.

~3 months later and i can at least get into a handstand even if i cant hold it for too long yet. surprisingly by not practicing them much specifically. had to work on my core more than i ever imagined and practice a few other holds and alter how i do pushups to build up the strength to support. the progress has been encouraging and motivation.

overall i feel stronger and more "body aware" than ever because of it and its helped my workouts overall. a lot of the lower backpain i used to get sitting in my office all day is gone now too

>talking to some folks at the gym and they go 3 days a week for
>about 2 hrs each day.

I've been on a full body plan for 7 weeks now. First two weeks it was taking me about 90 mins to get through my workout, mainly bc some exercises were challenging, my endurance was lagging, equipment wasn't readily available, resting too long, trying to find the appropriate warm up and rep weights, etc.

Now I can get it done in about 45 mins.

I went to the gym yesterday and had finished my routine and just went to the bench to do some singles.

I'm going to stick with this plan for another 5 weeks then switch it up.
I'm definitely getting stronger though.

I didn't start bench pressing until last June. I was intimidated. My goal then was to be able to press 2 plates (135 lbs) for 3 sets of 12. Now, that shit is a breeze. Yesterday I bench pressed 215.
Trying to work my way up to 225 for 5 sets of 5.

squat is at 195x3 lbs for 5 working sets
dead lift I just hit a PR 250x 2 but Working sets are at 240x5 for 3 sets

I'd say I'm on track esp since I'm cutting while also attempting to gain strength. smh silly me. I'm bound to hit a wall eventually.

While I've lost only 8 lbs since the start of the year, I can admit I've been fucking around sometimes. I'm not pressed to hit come in lean. If I can weigh 158 and wear a size 4 at 5'7 I'd say everything is where its supposed to be, and it will get tighter as long as I stay in a deficit. currently consuming 1600 calories.

I do some weird shit though...as a matter of fact i might change up now that I'm typing this lol...but anyways...i do a sort of mini crossfit rotation type deal...I walk in cold...i don't run before lifting or nothing...but walk in cold off the street, and throw 1 plate on as a warm up...my warm up is literally 2 reps to just 'crack' my joints...prolly not good but hey..it works for me....
then i'll throw the rest of the weight on there and do a set...after that set, instead of doing another set right then and there, i go immediately to my curls and bang out a set....after my curls, i hit the squat rack for a set....then right back to the bench....

For whatever reason I am stronger when i do it this way as opposed to finishing all my sets in one wop...maybe i should switch to doin that as it definitely fatigues my arms more which = stronger

sounds like a tri-set with the bench-curls-squats

I can see that working considering you giving your tris/chest ample amount of time to rest before banging another set out.

yesterday I started my chest with dumb bell bench press. was tired as shit afterwards. Waited til the end of my workout to hit some endurance reps on the barbell. I had rested long enough to throw up mad reps. I was trying to pump out 20 reps of 135 but fell short. Then I started adding weight on the bar to see if I could hit 225. Got close. Got tired at 205. May try next week to get to 225 for a couple reps

you got it...give it time...
mixing in dumbells and rows will get you those gains
but don't over do it...i've noticed that if i take a few days off from the bench(like 2-3), i come back noticeably stronger

I am heavier than I ever been (5'11, 215) but stronger than I ever been. I'm still in pretty good shape ... played 4 pick-up games back to back the other day

I lift twice a week and hoop once on average, but wanna get up to lifting 3x and hooping (or some other form of cardio) twice

In terms of my strength goals, I wanna add at least another 30 lbs to my bench by June and the start cutting. My body fat is sitting around 17.5% and I wanna have it down to 14 by August

118. "Staying plant-based"
In response to Reply # 0

Been plant-based for about 5 months now and have only cheated about 4 times. Broaden/expand my menu options and get to a point where I can even ween myself off of fake meat (i.e. 'Beyond' products, Impossible Burger, etc.) just in case it's discovered that even that shit causes cancer/chronic disease 40 years down the line. Lol. Going great and the support I receive at home, as well as work, has been amazing.

Right now with a lot of celebrities trying to go vegan, I feel it is a trend. But I tend to remain for the long haul because the science makes sense and even after a short while, you notice a small difference. Get colds/flu less (actually haven't gotten sick at all and this season is prime time for me coming down with something), even while those around you stay and remain sick weeks longer than they'd expected. When you work out/exercise, you are not sore afterwards.....or if it all less sore. Movements are better and less moody.

But the biggest surprise is still the support. I was prepared to go at it alone, but many are supportive, even when I backpedal. And I think I am actually influencing others when I least expected.

That's a myth no? Don't you have a much less sodium diet?

Well, they say meat can raise levels of acid in the body (....as well as other things but meat most definitely). The high concentration of acid leads to all sorts of problems and inflammation. All I know is, I feel a lot better after my workouts. I haven't been monitoring my sodium intake but by leaving out meat, the action itself, should guarantee a reduction in sodium.
The good thing about living plant-based is that you really don't have to monitor how much intake of 'most' things. Your body can easily eliminate your daily diet and it doesn't sit with you and cause problems down the line. Cannot say the same for meat. I mean, no matter whether it is blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, GERD, etc.....for most chronic conditions, at some extent they recommend you change your diet. Well, if certain 'foods' can be 'agitators' after you are diagnosed with whatever chronic condition, then it is not too far off to think those foods could be the cause as well, especially being a repeat offender after many years.

I can't say that I've made much progress towards vegetarianism or veganism, but his commitment to his diet has at the least made me more aware of my eating habits.

Your conversion to a vegan diet is probably doing the same for your close ones.

137. "reduced sugar and caffeine intake + yoga"
In response to Reply # 0

trying to stay under ~35g of sugar/day. it's not easy but cutting sugary drinks to 1 or fewer/day helps tremendously. caffeine isn't too difficult to cut further as i already developed the habit of drinking 1 to 1.5 cups/day of low caffeine/sugar cold brew with almond milk in my "morning" (i work second shift), over the course of several hours, and cutting all caffeine ~12 hours before i go to bed. the above changes have the added benefit of forcing me to drink way more water

about to get back into yoga now that my work schedule has become a little more normalized. previously (and it will happen again) i was working 9-12 hours/day and i had no idea how many hours i was working when i arrived at work. it's tough to set and stick to a post-work routine when you don't know when you're getting home from work on any given night. i told myself i had to at least be able to touch my toes standing up and sitting down before i started yoga again and i just reached that point a few nights ago. now it's simply a matter of making time every night for a quick 30-45 minute yoga session

threw my heavy lifting regimen off track. I just finished setting up my new program based around 20 rep squats. Lower weight/higher volume on my legs. It's almost time to be on the bike and I'm aiming to put in at least a hundred miles a week. I put lots of pullups in with different grips and some farmer's walks. Should be fun.

I was reading about that program as I was looking for a new routine. I gotta work my way up to that one. Squats are the most taxing exercise for me right now.
