"i have lost a good friend."

this weekend we lost one of the most talented producers in music. i cant explain how monumental a blow we in the hip hop community have just taken. I met James Yancey, or JayDee as we affectionately referred to him, in 1994 at battery studios nyc. From that day, hes never ceased to amaze me with his vast knowledge of good music and his nack for manipulating sounds and making them his own. i am an mc. ive been doing what i do for a long time. ive sat in many a basement, studio, tourbus, and livingroom watching and waiting as beats were being conceived for me to rock and i can honestly say, ive never seen anyone with a better understanding of sampling and re inventing sound. ive never seen anyone w a tighter grip on technology and how to use it to broaden ones perspective without losing site of the original essence...hip hop. Jay Dee was a true hip hop "Artist". The vinyl of the world served as his colors. the sp1200, mpc60, keybords and computer programs were the brushes he used to apply his gift to the canvas that is this world. ive never been a dickrider. i only give credit where credit is due and the genius of James Yancey is most definitely due credit. i cant begin to explain the influence his mind and ear has had on my band, myself, and the careers of so many other artists. The most humble, modest, worthy and gifted beatmaker ive known...and definitely the best producer on a mic. as i write these words, my tears splashing the keyboard, i reminisce on the times ive shared w Dilla, never without that signature smile and head bouncing to the beat, and finally understand the true meaning of passion. Jay Dee had a passion for life and music and will never be forgotten. i loved this brother. i love what hes done for us all.and though im happy hes no longer in the pain he had been recently feeling, im crushed by the pain of his absence. " The name is Dilla dog and i can only rep the real and the raw."

my nigga Dilla.... rest in peace man.

Are you serious? damn.

If one could love the true art form of hip hop and guitar equally, that would be me. I'm a modern white Prince with the heart of John Legend and the soul of Maxwell. Mix in some rock and a little MJ, and here I am.

LOL @ the subject line....but on the real, RIP Jay Dilla. You'll be missed...especially because of your work on Common's LWFC - I love all your tracks on that one.

Stay strong brother thought, I know the feeling of losing somebody inspirational and irreplaceable to illness (my father). Rest assured, I took everything that he should have been before he died and vowed to accomplish those great feats through my own life skills and abilities. As an atheist who doesn't believe in God, the supernatural, heavan or hell, I have had to evaluate what the death of somebody important means to us in the greater scheme of things. Through deep reflection it hit me that every single one of us carries a piece of one another inside us as a result of our interactions (whether personally or through a medium like music, or litterature). These pieces of each other that we all hold inside ourselves give us purpose by allowing us to work towards a common goal for the betterment of all humanity. These traumatic events that we experience also help us understand how none of us are merely the isolated individuals that this society sometime teaches us to, but that we are truly social creatures -each one of us composed of many interconnected fragments of one another. Let us use those fragments to keep the legacy of our fallen heroes alive!

Thank you for that Thought. The majority of here that post on OKP can't really phathom what it is to actually know the "stars" we hold in such high regards; however, we do know what it is to lose someone close to us whom we love. The death of Dilla goes way beyond his fame and the everlasting beats he left us. He was a brother, son, best friend and human like everyone else and he will forever live on in our ears, hearts and souls.

If anything, we can all take his example and live every day to the fullest. The only thing we are promised in life is death. Everything beyond is up to us to figure out.

Respect.

yo thought, i can definitely say that you are one of my biggest inspirations. and to see you post something like that about someone you hold in high regard is why i respect you so much.

my prayers, as are everyone else's, are with all you fam/friends of JAY DEE (it should be all caps from now on) and hope that you keep on doing whatever it is you love to do to the fullest because in his absense (dunno if i spelled that right) that is definitely one of the things that JAY DEE would want you to do. much love, strength and peace thru this time to all ya'll.

and to the cat who kept heads noddin' all around the world.

Rest In Peace Brother

yo, I never even knew that this cat produced all the shit he did. When I saw a list of tracks he produced, I saw a list of some of my favorite songs ever. It's sad that it took his passing to make me realize how great he was. I know you've been through some TERRIBLE situations in your life. Stay strong. You'll see him again.

That is deep right there

>this weekend we lost one of the most talented producers in
>music. i cant explain how monumental a blow we in the hip hop
>community have just taken. I met James Yancey, or JayDee as we
>affectionately referred to him, in 1994 at battery studios
>nyc. From that day, hes never ceased to amaze me with his vast
>knowledge of good music and his nack for manipulating sounds
>and making them his own. i am an mc. ive been doing what i do
>for a long time. ive sat in many a basement, studio, tourbus,
>and livingroom watching and waiting as beats were being
>conceived for me to rock and i can honestly say, ive never
>seen anyone with a better understanding of sampling and re
>inventing sound. ive never seen anyone w a tighter grip on
>technology and how to use it to broaden ones perspective
>without losing site of the original essence...hip hop. Jay Dee
>was a true hip hop "Artist". The vinyl of the world served as
>his colors. the sp1200, mpc60, keybords and computer programs
>were the brushes he used to apply his gift to the canvas that
>is this world. ive never been a dickrider. i only give credit
>where credit is due and the genius of James Yancey is most
>definitely due credit. i cant begin to explain the influence
>his mind and ear has had on my band, myself, and the careers of
>so many other artists. The most humble, modest, worthy and
>gifted beatmaker ive known...and definitely the best producer
>on a mic. as i write these words, my tears splashing the
>keyboard, i reminisce on the times ive shared w Dilla, never
>without that signature smile and head bouncing to the beat,
>and finally understand the true meaning of passion. Jay Dee
>had a passion for life and music and will never be forgotten.
>i loved this brother. i love what hes done for us all.and
>though im happy hes no longer in the pain he had been recently
>feeling, im crushed by the pain of his absence. " The name is
>Dilla dog and i can only rep the real and the raw."
>
>my nigga Dilla.... rest in peace man.

also...

I consistently get into the "best producer on the mic" debate and always end up with Dilla in the #1 spot. now I'll add your endorsement whenever I make my argument.

dude had such great timing and style with his rhymes. he arranged his words and INTONATION the same way he'd arrange a bass line.

alot of people don't realize this. this is what comes off as natural swagger, but it actually translates as careful planning of rhythm displacement and cadence structuring... how his words might fall a bit before or after the beat, and like you mentioned, his intonation was great.

he wasn't the best mc ever, but he was really slept on. see Ruff Draft for proof, this dude could spit.

I learned of jay dee’s death in a very weird way. I made a review of jd’s project on amazon.com on feb.8 and I came to work on feb. 11 to see if it had posted yet. So by that time, there were other reviews submitted and when I read the first one, it read something to the effect of “rest in peace j dilla…” and I was like what “f” are they talking about by rest in peace?!!! I scrolled down the page to read another review, and it read something to the effect of, “jay dee’s legacy will live on forever…” but still, I was like these people must be on crack or something cause jay dee isn’t dead - he may be a little ill, but he isn’t dead! So then I went to allhiphop.com, then to stonesthrow.com, and lastly to okayplayer.com and only then was I convinced that his death did occur. I was in total shock - I couldn’t accept the instant pain that it brought to my heart. I thought of the vast library that he erected and then thought of all the artist that will be affected by his death – the d’angelo’s, the common’s, the badu’s, roots, slum, phat kat, spacek, de la, frank n dank, kweli’s, poyser’s, and many others. I couldn’t believe that there would be no more boom bap percussion and click clack hi-hats. And I don’t care what anybody says, ELECTRIC CIRCUS WAS AND IS A CLASSIC. NOBODY CAME OUT WITH A SOUND LIKE THAT BEFORE THAT PROJECT. NO ONE HAD THE GUTS OR THE VISION TO CREATE THAT SOUND. LIKE MILES DAVIS WITH HIS JAZZ FUSION SOUND IN THE EARLY 70’S WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME, SO IS ELECTRIC CIRCUS. JUST STAY AROUND 15 TO 20 MORE YEARS AND SEE…

See, there are those that loved tupac and biggie, but those guys aren’t on my top 5 list of emcees. Their deaths puzzled me rather than caused me a lot of pain. JAY DEE’S DEATH TOOK MY BREATH AWAY LITERALLY!!! I cherished this guy as a producer and his mic skills weren’t lacking either. He was by far the dopest emcee on “fantastic”. He could definitely spit! There is only one producer out there that can “come close” to j dilla, and that’s madlib. Everybody else, don’t even think about it. See, jay dee could do what primo could do, but primo can’t do what j dilla did. The same with pete rock, dr. dre, pharrell, and kanye. As a matter of fact, madlib can’t flip a track like j dilla did even though madlib is the most talented producer out there overall. Jay dee was way special. I mean, I was like, why couldn’t some other garbage rapper or producer passed away??!!! Why jay dee? Then it thought about it. Jay dee made heavenly tracks, so why wouldn’t god go ahead and claim him for good? If I was god, I would have jay dee up several tracks and years ago. I can only hope that there are others that were students of jay dee’s approach, sound, and modus operandi. We can only wish for the best of imitators as I would never call it biting, I would call it inspiration. I will miss jay dee’s sound. DAMN. HE WAS THE BEST – PERIOD. Hearing a jay dee track was like being introduced to hip hop for the very first time all over again. His tracks brought tears to my eyes as I would sit and think, “how in the hell did he come up with that? This jd cat can’t be human!”

Since jd posed the question himself in the linear notes of his cd, what is the sample he used for “it’s like that” on his “Welcome to Detroit project”? PLEASE POST IF YOU KNOW WHAT HE SAMPLED FOR THAT TRACK.

As with all great artists, let's remember his great spirit through the works he has left us. He will always live through his art, as long as we don't let anyone forget.

He had hip hop going in the right direction, hopefully his inspiration will lead to many carrying on his legacy.

Tribute to Jay Dee

Sev'ral days later - in my mind it's still a fog
The music universe lost the legend Dilla Dog
The time was perfect cause you're practiced up
4 God to revel in your tracks and cuts like Jack McDuff's "Oblighetto"
It's fitting that you passed with Lupus
When you flipped a sample I wondered what the jazz loop was
A portion of the whole variance
We're gonna miss 25% of Soulquarians
But now my trunk is tilted
February 7th - I had "DONUTS" dunked in milk kid
In one word Jay Dee was "Fantastic"
No other producer made what the man crafted
He repped the D - the streets of the loaded glock
What's next - collabos wit' Pac?
Death at an early age - heaven's game advance see
An angel went home - Rest In Peace James Yancey

-STONY FACADE

he was definately loved by those he met and affected the lives of people he never knew and those who never knew him.

Him passing is like starting a sentence and being cut off from talking. You're not done talking but what's more important? your sentence or the entire conversation.

I feel you G.

just read the article on his last days and its fresh all over

didnt see this new board for dilla until now - such a great idea.

it would be so hard to overstate how much influence dilla has had on all of us here. he was my favorite producer, one of my favorite emcees, and inspired the bulk of my other favorite producers and artists. that's an impact crater - the man's legacy is giant-type heavy.

i hope we continue to celebrate the music and spread it wide

thank you dilla and after reading that article, thank you Maureen Yancey

I feel so sad right now. I think my reason may be a little different from everyone else's. See, where I live, there is no underground radio, and all the stations played top 40 songs. For me, the first time I heard of SV was when they put their album out about 2-3yrs ago, "Trinity". At that time I thought they were a new group, and I had liked the music. I wanted the album, but never got the money to get it. I never forgot about them, but It made me want to hear all of their work. I just hate that I never got to meet this man because he sounds like he was just the best person to know. It seems like you would just get hyped up off of his energy alone.

My sincere thoughts and prayers are with all his friends, family, and the rest of the fans. It really and truely is sad and hurtful when we lose our legends that we know still had a lot of work to do.

I have never meet Jay Dee but I must say that he has been the most influential hiphop producer to me. His music remained raw yet was dripping of pure soul and had a way of touching the human spirit. His production to me is the bar for not only hiphop music but for modern production in general. His example shall forever be an inspiration for me.

RIP Jay. May The God give you peace and blessings.

I've cooked for some of you guys for years now, and I'm hoping to see you this weekend in Boulder. I've been in physical and emotional pain lately, and I was trying to cook at midnight for Tre Hardson, in a lot of pain, and I threw on the Black Thought/Dilla piece "Comin to Break You Off" and I can't even figure out how it eased my pain, but it really did, especially the physical pain. It's something about Dilla's grasp of harmony, I think, and my bones are now 40% air (I'm evaporating), and so maybe the harmony has room to knock around...? And that seems to work in so many of Dilla's gifts to us. Love, Shep
