i'm not quest but that's what he said:1. making stale beats taste fresh (intro-uses tired "god made me funky" break. but here it sounds great)

2. rarely hear 16 bar hi-hat patterns

3. i don't know...nuff said

4. the latin percussion that sounds like spoons (i forget) as hi hat in "jealousy".

5. the use of "is the word" (grease) in "hold tight"

6. making my drums sound like "big beat" (reverb ass break) by looping my drums from 40 feet away (you hear it in beginning)....

7. not to mention totaly reconstructing d's lazy ad-libs into sounding like a full fledge song. (d sang as he played but it wasn't official. and what he sang wasn't the form of how you hear it now.

8. the pattented voice as muffled instrument in "what's it all about" "don't....stop!" love it.

9. forth and back may sound like regular fodder, but somehow jay turned 2 songs into a whole new song. and making kurupt's vocal fit the song.

10. gaps in "untitled"

11. chopping "space" by steve miller to smithereens. turning it into something new.

12. reversing the rhythm on "get this money" from how herbie hooked it up. using filter for words as melody again

13. nothing new about sampling ill shit, so "raise it up" isn't a revelation. but FUCK IT when's the last time and 808 snare sounded that dope behind news cast music?

14. player. is "clair" song by jazz quartet unlimited voices

15. duct taped cymbal on "cb4". gave me idea to do the same on "chicken grease".

16. taking pete rock's track and redoing it, and taking average words "hey!" "world" and stretching them out (and "surprise! filtering) so that explodes like a fourth of july shower (heeeey)

17. 2u4u lyrical innovation (reapetiton/call and response)

18. jacking my drums from "she's always in my hair" (how did he find an open spot?) and then jacking d's "jonze in my bonze" (??!?!) for the music in 1/2 second spurts

19. "go ladies" forget song but jay butchered it lovely

20. don't know 20

Ok, so I'm old as hell on this, but I listened again and I HEAR it....Jay Dee DID jack ?uest's drums from that D'Angelo track...

The funny thing is after I heard that song a few times ("She's Always.." - back when I first heard the track when the came out), I thought about jacking the drums myself, but never got to it.

Once again, PROOF that Jay Dee is one of the illest producers doin' it.

check it, on some real shit, for hip-hop production as we know it, everybody samples, but damn, for cats who sample, Jay-Dee is THE #1 reason why I spend an extra THIRTY MINUTES on drum selection after the sample is done. I learned chops from Preem, basslines anmd filters from Pete, voice sample usage from the RZA, but that drum shit and bringing the sample, bass, and voices to life, ALL JAY. Oh yeah, all these cats with offbeat drums, and crazy filters, Jay is the pioneer of that shit. While we were saying "damn, and "shit" and "what the fuck" to Pete and Preems beats in amazement, Jay's production is the first shit I've ever said "ooooooh" to.

The second is the mighty Nicolay. This muthafucka is dope as fuck, best believe it. His beats will really put you in place.

So, we can safely say that Jay is on the Mount Olympus of beatmakers with Pete, Preem, Rza, and Dre.

Don't be fooled by the so-called "new jay". That fucka probably still got oohgobs of "old jay" beats just chillin in the cut, waitin for a muthafucka to slip.

Like it or don't like.

It's the damn truth.

Shit, I bumped Fantastic vol. 2 like it was Midnight Marauders reincarnated, and that album is over 90% DILLA lets not forget.

Nuff Said

fantastic 2 didnt redefine any sound. it exists as a great album in its own space meanwhile when tribe was out they had pretty fierce competition for the abstract or jazz sound(de la, gang starr, digable later on)

there is no "butter" on fantastic
climax doesnt even come close to electric relaxation

most of the people who fell in love with tribe arent even overly ecstatic about slum.

vol. 1 and vol. 2 are classics, trinity is good but not close enough to great for me

how can u say that with all of the discussion that goes on here about Jay Dee influencing so many other producers and their styles?

it exists as a great
>album in its own space meanwhile when tribe was out they had

>la, gang starr, digable later on)---u forgot pete and cl

i think Black Star, Mos & Kweli as solo artists, Common and the Roots make some purdy good competition..they are pretty much lumped in the same category...and i think Slum is just as innovative as Outkast just without the commercial success.

>
>there is no "butter" on fantastic
>climax doesnt even come close to electric relaxation

there is plenty of "butter" on fantastic...how is an album gonna be classic without the "butter"? although i wont compare anything to electric relaxation...u trying to set a trap...no way dunny

>
>most of the people who fell in love with tribe arent even
>overly ecstatic about slum.

i think most people have a problem with Slum lyrics and how can a tribe fan speak on lyrics and Phife was a part of Tribe...pot calling the kettle black? i rather listen to T3 anyday over Phife.

>
>vol. 1 and vol. 2 are classics,

true, true

trinity is good but not
>close enough to great for me

thats kool, but i for one love the album...its volumes above good to my ears...and in the end all that really matters are my ears

he meant the song "butter" off of low end theory, not butter meaning dope shit.

SV came when we had absolutly nothing to hold on to. And you're right, they didn't do anything "new" but they did show us where hip hop should be, and where it's heading.

I honestly dont think anyone has changed music since Ced Gee and Marley Mar started flipping samples back in the 80's, but that just my opinion.

but fantastic vol 2 is just an extended fist of fantastic vol 1.

sorta the dywm from organix.

which singlehandedly (fantastic) ushered in the blueprint of what we now know as the new soul movement.

of course you wern't privy to this because distribution was low. but for most of us, this shit was the cliff notes to getting our masters.

drum programming.

i really believe that if jay dee got proper credit for "got til it's gone" this woulda been a whole new game.

thus dre and vidal are reaping the endless cash benefits of the soul movement.

it's all a domino theory.

someone heard "otherside of the game" and james and i got mad work. wasn't a hit song. but enough to get work off the ground. problem was i have another career, and james and i couldn't be the soul jam and lewis because of my work schedule. so as a result, lots of folks called but we only tapped 20 percent of the well.

someone heard the "otherside of the game" ALBUM--jill's record-- and the same thing happened. except, dre and vidal have a more concentrated system because all they do is create songs and ideas everyday. non stop. then the offers pour in. like a slot machine. now that fire for jill's record expired, "butterflies" replaced it. and that was an act of god in itself. so thus more people are coming to them. and as i suspect from the traffic i see at the studio: mariah, j lo, joe, carl thomas, and justin, they will refuel the gas tank. and more people, and more, and more and so on and so on.

poor jay dee got no buzz than from the folks close to him.

i doubt j lo and sony will run to him because, there is no knowledge of him in their circle.

justin has personally at one point called me and jay to work on new shit, but i suspect that smart money is to go with the sound, but from the team that has a proven record.

but don't sleep.

it might sound regular and normal to you. but keep in mind fantastic vol 2 was completed a full year and a half before it came out (done in fall of 98).

and for those in the know,

when we heard it while it was being created (1997)

that was the most awe inspiring shit we ever heard.

--dont sleep. just relax.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened with Jay not getting full credit for Got Til Its Gone?? I remember I was in the parking lot of this grocery store, going in to buy me some eats, and I couldn't leave until it finished. It was just, one of the songs. Anyway, when I went and looked and saw Jam and Lewis had the credits, I couldn't believe it (and this was way before I even knew who Jay was). So, can somebody hook me up with what happened with this?

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

I ain't mad as Ques for holdin Jay's back...but that statement was slightly overboard. Production wise they might be able to go toe-to-toe, but you can't just leave out the Q-Tip/Phife equation. Tip laid the golden verse on that joint...

-i never said BETTER

but cmon now.
we have more emotional connection to tribe cause we grew up on em. so it's an unfair advantage. and relaxation has a 9 year lead.

but both have great hypnotic loops that start off side 2.

the chorus? hey, we are stuck with "relax yourself girl please settle down" like a tattoo. so i know im gonna lose this challenge. but i always argued that tribe was the last great group to get away with murder.

funny that the last week of october in 93 gave us two crucial offerings.

midnite and 36.

when i say getting away with murder i mean, chorus power.

the magic of wu was all in the chorus: dollar dollar bill y'all, m-e-t-h-o-d man, clan in the front let cha feet stomp, shame on a nuh...

you get the point. sure they were on point with lyrics and style. but at the end? great friggin chorus.

now tribe?

the music was so magical. but on none of low end theory, and midnight lies a great chorus.

think i'm crazy?

-excursions?
-rap promoter?
-vibes and stuff?
-date rape?
-what?
-steve biko?

i mean ok, so "stir it up" is a chorus. but is it engaging as say...."FUCK THE WORLD DON'T ASK ME FOR SHIT!"

my point is.

classic as it is. electric relax was more about hearing the classic tribe 3 bar loop patten.

i love the fall in love chorus and i love the rhymes.

i'd get deeper into it but i got a record to finish.

ok smartass you said look for the post hi-tek "vs." jay dee. I was around when the hi-tek "or" jay dee post originated. I thought you were putting me on to an archived post I might have missed. You know how people have been comparing pete, jay,& tek for years on these boards (meaning multiple posts on the same topic). I guess I am stupid for listening 2 u and searching for a post that doesn't exist (in da archives anyways).

I'm not sure I follow you.

I think One and Hoe are ridiculous btw...I actually have another version of Hoes that's different from the one on Trinity. I like that one more. The part that T3 comes into when the beat switches is much nicer than the Trinity version.

Let's is a little boring at times but Jay did alot of little things with that cut. With all of the songs there is alot of detail to them. Is is just the whole keyboard thing your not into? Although, I wouldn't think so coming from you. What is it that you don't feel?

there. As far as raw feel and knock me down and kick me in the a$$. Yeah, I can't deny the Vol2/W2D/LWFC production was the ish.

I guess I'm looking at it from a personal point of view as well. I like Jays versatility alot and I wouldn't want to be in a position as an artist where people expect me to deliver a certain sound every time.

Hell, I made a house track the other night. So for a person that likes my hip-hop stuff it might piss them off to hear my "club-friendly" stuff. I'm just not one for "pigeon-holding" an artist and not letting them grow.

I think it's a growth/opportunity thing. If you look at Jay for instance you will see that he's all over the place in terms of his ability. From SV to Tribe to Com to QTip to Busta etc...he's real diverse. I think for him he's at a point where he's messing with a different sound. Personally, I like that he's willing to experiment with different stuff. If he just kept delivering the same Vol2 and Tribe sound then cats would say that he's not versatile.

From what I can see of Hi-Tek is that he's gotten the opportunity to work on bigger projects with more sales potential. In that case the artist that he's working with will want a certain sound that you or me may not necessarily like. Or a cat might make strategic cuts specifically geared towards a certain market. To me there is nothing wrong with that as long as you as the artist loves the outcome.

Basically, every track a cat makes doesn't have to be for me. I think both of them probably got volumes of the early stuff that we will never get to hear. Stuff that was made before they even got big. Now they are just on to new things. I ain't mad....

Word, like the Mood album (Hi-Tek's production). Just heard that yesterday. Real nice.

I ain't mad either when producer takes it one step further. In the case of Jay though, his newer work hasn't grabbed me by the throat as some of the "older" work still does to this day.

But I'm ready to say "YET". I'm 100% positive that it eventually will again.

i reckon. how many times do you have to do that thing before you want to stretch out? about the amount of times he did the jay style on vol 1, 2, lwfc, and the countless remixes.

take dem clothes off is the $$ style.

'hoes' is fffffffffffffuckin brilliant to me. 'one' is more subtle on the album than on the first 12". i like the end a lot.

you know what i'm saying though? rhodes, sub bass, simple 3-element loping jaydee beat... he's done it a million times.

now hi-tek.... the beat he did on trinity is AWFUL.

one innovation of essvee is taking the syncopated 'uh' 'ah' 'wha' 'cha' vocal business to a ridiculous level. so far it eclipses the lyrics. that's the root of that 'flow' business everyone praises them for.

Let's talk about biting...step out side your body, then go back inside your brain through your EARHOLE (pick one). Rewind back over everything on the radio that was "hot" since Fantastic 2 dropped. Especially the 'The Wash' sndtrk. Ni99as in the industry (esp. newcomers looking for a name) have RAPED Dilla's style to death. That's why SV be soundin' so bitter (peep La La on Trinity...'niggas came in this came and they stole our style/now look at these niggas claim they so hostile) in they rhymes and talkin about bein hated on/backstabbed, etc. IMHO..

That's why Dilla's moving awaaaaay from that shit. 'Me and my Man' and 'Love (A Thing of The Past)' were both bangin' to me, but I'm diggin the Hoes/One/Genesis/Make it Hurt/ shit, too. He's hot to me for the simple fact that if you know a li'l bit about producing, you can hear him DOING THINGS...ya know? He don't just make beats to me. There's thought behind it, MATH behind it, and creativity behind it...not just the desire to get $$$...'when you see me do it/ I do it to DO IT'

thass my dickrider post 4 the day and I'm out.....

Jay got frustrated from making all that heat with minimal recognition from people outside the industry...then other people capitalizing on it...like Touch Of Jazz now known as the Mama's Boys and countless others.

and to make matters worst, SV is semi-blowing up and Kariem Wiggins looks like he bout to make some noise(picture in the source) as the "new old jay".

thats purdi fucked up, how i see it because "Got Til Its Gone" is great and that shoulda been a calling card for him.

now he got the new style, which i like...not as much as Vol 1, 2 and LWFC...and once again i think his genesis will be passed over. i hadnt heard the new FnD stuff so i cant say...but Jay is too far ahead of niggas...only Outkast is allowed to do that

On the real, I'm a huuuuuuge beat-head. Huge. And to me, Hi-tek's beats all sound THE SAME.
I mean everyone has had their signature - ?uest with his ride-crash on the seven-count (in an 8-count) (peep "Hurricane"), Jay with his hi-hat on the 2,4,6,8 beat ("2u4u"), Pete with that 'pete rock instrument' on the 6-count ("Rock Steady 2").
But cats progressed, Hi-Tek is still stuck doing that annoying-ass hi-hat thing - jawn is boring as hell. I always say if you've heard "On Mission" offa Soundbombing 2, then you've heard every Hi-Tek beat.
But Jay has seriously been moving forward. Y'all notice how his beats change now - i mean in "One", check what the beat becomes when Baatin comes in. The transition is ridiculous... And im not gonna even talk about that last piece of the song in "hoes"...

too many imitators

the reason i don't like his newer stuff as much is because of the drums......he does that shit where he skips a snare in the 2nd bar of his loop, and replaces it with either a kick or a lower sounding snare....it gives the beat a boring feel and takes away from the fluidity of the beat.

yo jay, BRING BACK the headphone cracking snares and beats that have some flow to them!!

In response to Reply # 21

That track right there is quarternote-to-quarternote one of the most complex and sickest tracks jay did after the LWFC period.

I'm curious to know what you think about that track.

His mic skills were extremely impressive. Very unique style and you have to rewind it 2 or 3 times to get what he's actually sayin'.

Beat-wise it's very reminiscent of J-Live's 'them that's not' (who knows, he may have been inspired by that track for move), but he took that concept of a perceived slowtempo loop and expanded on it making the whole song, at least to me, seem very complex.

In response to Reply # 72

I have to agree that's one of my fav Dilla tracks. It's hard as hell. Very intricate....I felt the change coming on when I heard that track. So I guess I was completely suprised when I hear Let's and Hoes.

To me the illest thing about that 12" is that one side you got that old sloppy/nasty joint F the Police. It's just completey raw and dirty. Then you flip to a joint that is completely different altogether. That's why I got love for Jay. Move is dope.

Nic - if you ain't heard Move man you HAVE to hear it. It's essential Dilla material.

the 3 songs that jay made from minnie riperton's "inside my love"
ATCQ - lyrics to go
Nine Yards - always find a way (jay dee remix)
SV - look of love remix from vol. 1
- (on this one, he used Trina Broussard's remake of the song, off the love jones soundtrack) *prolly my favorite Jay beat ever too*

In response to Reply # 100

it has some classic songs but to be it on the level of any of tribes first three albums i think is pushing it. for one thing, tracks like the busta collabo and climax arent very good at all which break up the flow and some of the beats sound like they have yet to be finished (and not neces in a good way).

id actually say that jay dees BBE album was better and much more consistent.

Everyone has their own opinion I guess. Midnight was my favorite album of all time (brings back some of my happiest memories) but vol 2. is starting to push Midnight to 2nd place. Try this.......get yourself some good headphones, if you smoke or drink get a little of both, close your eyes and enjoy the ride. For the record I Love this album just as much when I'm sober.

"vibrant thing"? q-tip is listed everywhere EXCEPT on his on album which has him and jay-dee as the produce for the track. is that a typo? cause "breathe and stop" is mos def a jay dee track.
